[voice of mod] Plotting!
Hello, delightful heathens, and a happy new year to you all. With the holidays officially behind us, we're looking to roll out some plot and shake a few trees in order to get things rolling again. Part of our unofficial new year's mod resolution is to not just throw more crazy happenings into the fray, but also to encourage everybody to step in and get up to their own no-good. We want to ensure that everybody is comfortable here, and especially comfortable enough to strike out with their own plots and storylines -- this game is as much yours as ours, so remember that it is completely okay to throw things out there at your leisure... at least provided that you don't blow up all of London without warning us first. (Such as: Demons doing what they do best. Occultists' spells going wrong. Market Vendors feeling suffocated by their agreement with the Merchants, and subsequently taking a stand.)

To start it all off, we wanted to put this post up with intent of open plotting. Comment with your character(s), and tell us what you want for them. Not just unfilled roles like 'I'd really like to see my characters's x relative here', but your goals for them, the storylets you'd love to write, but perhaps aren't yet sure how to put in play. People can then respond with ideas, or volunteer their own characters, and perhaps along the way we'll stumble across a few new dynamics which can be built out.

Starting things off with an example!
  • Traditionally Emily has worn a different face for the people she interacts with -- her father gets daughter-playfulness, Nives & Ophelia get the good cop/early-20-something, Sully gets caretaker, etc. That's stopping. She's had a lot of fairly awful things happen in the immediate past, and it's made Em finally step up to the plate re: acting like the adult she prefers to be treated as. The mask-wearing is going, and from hereon in most people are going to get a consistent this-is-Em. (Unless, you know, she loathes you. Hi, Nic.) Her very small support network has mostly unraveled, and it got me thinking that Em doesn't really have any truly close friends; the Havenites receive a slight detachment due to that resident/staff disconnect, and most people are kept at some sort of distance. I would really like to fix that. It'd be great to work on the existing relationships, but also to find new people whom Em can interact with and actually find trustworthy; she's sort of queen of the casual acquaintance. This is made particularly awkward by the fact that she's waaaay more comfortable with people who are older than she is (ex: the two people she's closest to are her father and Gryff, both in their 50s), so it'd be interesting to poke at people also in their 20s and see what happens.
  • People who need things translated. And obviously, by that I mean the really archaic stuff, languages which are long dead or perhaps generally unknown to the human tongue if magic hasn't turned you into a human Rosetta Stone. There is so much potential for terrible, terrible consequences for all and sundry if Em is tasked with translating Things Man Should Not Know.

Elder Young is 20 and unaffiliated with Haven, though I think he'd be sympathetic to her if he knew about it! The problem is that he's not allowed to be alone with any women until he breaks away from his mission.

Other things I think of and promptly forget: I'd really like for Em to eventually be approached by the Library. It's a bit of a shoe-in since her father already works for them, and while she'd, y'know, make a shitty Praetorian, the girl's magic makes her cut out for Information or even certain types of Monitoring. (Plus it would be a twist of the knife for Gryff, and I'm pretty sure 90% of Gates enjoys fucking with him.)

Sure, she's tainted goods thanks to association with Haven, but that's the sort of thing Library training could potentially scrub away.

Nives & Ophelia get the good cop/early-20-something... That's stopping.

I would like very much to see that stopping in such a way that pretending-to-be-tough-but-actually-really-over-sensitive!Nives can be all kicked puppy about it, if that could be arranged.

Well, he's been at the game for three months, and he still doesn't know magic exists, let alone that he's got some. So I'd like to fix that asap.

After that, I imagine he might run into a crisis of faith and probably run away from the Missionary Pad. Maybe he'll even start using his first name. Where does he go? I'm open to anything!

Vaughn Wagner

2012-01-03 04:51 pm UTC (link)
Who is, hopefully, going to be edging toward the Streitenfeld Group (thanks, Mark!), but nevertheless.
  • So the dilemma of Vaughn is that he can't turn the magic off, can't stop using it due to the way Market-magic interacted with Natural ability. This means that he heals himself constantly (which could be worse), but also that physical contact with other people does the same -- Vaughn touches you, and despite himself the magic reaches out to try and fix whatever may be wrong, whether it's a paper-cut or asthma or that heart defect which has never troubled you but is waiting for the opportune moment. Side effects of the healing include Vaughn's 'patient' experiencing a high best recreated in the bedroom with liberal use of needles and opiates, and Vaughn himself receiving an echo of whatever's gone wrong -- not a 1-to-1 match of what may be felt, but close enough where it's made him gun-shy about physical contact. I'd like to a) find reasons to make Vaughn suck it up and heal people regardless, and b) find a way to skirt around his dislike of contact. Candy at The Gem seems like a fairly obvious choice (hi, RM!), but is there anyone else?
  • Which kind of segways into just branching out Vaughn's social network in general. He's an unrepentant asshole, and I understand most people don't want to deal with that. Still, it'd be amazing to see someone edge in under the armor and help remind him that he is, in fact, still a human being. It tends to take either someone who is just as willing to hand out verbal abuse as he is, or to a lesser degree, those who have it considerably worse than him. (Jacinta with her past springs to mind.)

  • Words cannot accurately express how much I'd like to add on to the rotating crew of thieves. Without making suggestions which are probably better left to new characters built specifically for the task, I'd just like a show of hands for those who deal in less-than-legal areas. We have a few conmen right now, but even contacts would be great -- a fence, for example, Liam can take stolen goods to.
  • Targets. The crew needs more jobs, should cause more upheaval in-game than it currently does. I have my own little list of people I'd like to hit with the conmen, but volunteers would be grand.
  • Liam himself is on a downward spiral and has been for quite some time. My secret heart's desire is to find someone he'd recognize as having potential enough to eventually take over the crew, someone he can effectively take on as a protege. Morals need to be there, but elastic. Empathy is a must, and the qualifications list is fairly sizable but sort of boils down to 'chaotic good Robin Hood'.

  • I would love for someone to mess him up. He's twitchy and paranoid about Merchants but so far he's only gotten the snot beaten out every now and then by the thugs he would have fought without magic. The sort of blokes who went down to the pub after and told the story of what a strange night they just had. Avoiding Market attention doesn't make any sense. He wants to be a superhero. I want the world to squish him and reshape him a little. A lot.

  • At the same time I would also adore someone to maybe try and explain why he is an idiot. Squishing out of empathy if such a thing is possible. We all have to grow up sometime.

I would like more people for Candy to take her guard down around. In an optimal world that place would be filled with more folks from the Gem but since a certain someone had to go and find Jesus even they have likely been getting more "stuck" smiley faces. People she wouldn't feel the need to perform at in quite the same capacity. She is a women of grins that imply secrets and the demands of a job that defines her identity. For the sake of keeping her from imitating the inhuman she could use an ally or two she can dress down around. A person there is no need to impress.

Gryff
[info]immoveable
2012-01-04 12:39 am UTC (link)
  • So I would really really (as in, like burning) like to give him a protege. Whilst emphasis in latest writing has been 'Gryff is not the nice, broken-down white knight everyone thinks he is' he is also (and was) an exceptionally good and patient teacher. He's also going to be hunting out who he can train up as next head of Haven potentially -- and I confess, I sorta really want that dynamic that is someone young that Gryff does not despise/is not that poor old dog with the puppy perpetually trying to lure him into PLAYTIME NOW. This is restricted to male candidates, unfortunately -- he has women in his life, tyvm -- but could be interesting. Likely to be a new-character-only idea, but one I very much want to play with. Just putting it out there.

  • Having done the damned thing and broken with the Andleys (for which all the world winces) I really want to find new connections to establish for the man. Drinking partners and small social outlets -- he's going to be trying out this new thing where he's not repressing rage all the time, so giving him company to try it with is an excellent plan.

  • And then I, like the rest of Gates, really enjoy poking a stick at him. So I would like baiting. Once I had an excellent line with he and a demon he'd encountered in Monitoring -- giving Gryff something to go up against would be all my dreams come true and wide-eyed Christmases. He's Jegudiel's Champion right now, and he's not being very Champion-ly.

    Toby
    [info]eyesopened
    2012-01-04 12:47 am UTC (link)
  • The woman needs friends. Actual ones, not the demon babysitter or the not-quite-love-interest who spends half his time out of town. I would really like the equivalent of someone dragging her back into what it feels like to be twenty-something and not the tired-thirty-seven something she appears to be. Conversely, I would really like someone to call her on her 'wiser than thou' shit. Because it is shit, and it would be most excellent to have a line in which Toby got told so.

  • This is one that may wind up added to the 'wanted characters' list: I really, really want her ex to show up back in game. There's a very basic bare-bones idea behind what's been given a little ideation in writing, but comes down to: he had magic, he got into that magical card-game-for-souls shit that needs to show up also and he lost big -- big enough that he ran and that the creditors are still coming after the woman that was his live-in-girlfriend back then and wound up pregnant, alone and scared out of her wits. Considering he has a two year old he's never met and an ex who blames him largely for the entire world getting fucked up on her behalf, it could be amazing, it could be interesting, it could be glorious disaster.

  • She also needs candidates for that suspiciously sympathetic streak that runs core deep. The woman is not a natural parent but she's taken to mothering, and it works for her in a 'eat your greens or I'll ram them down your throat' kind of a way. She is very good at being highly unsympathetic and telling you to suck it up -- takers?

  • I desperately want to involve her in magic. It scares her shitless, it is largely the reason why she keeps multiple locks on the door, rotates phone numbers and barricades herself in mundane protection measures but it is also now the realm of her daughter and her ex. I have no idea how to go about it, but I'd like her to be dragged in. Takers?

    * Probably not quite what modlies meant with this post, but Nives does have an open, untagged mini-thread in the the Ball that I'd love to see tagged by anyone at all. Because later I could see it driving her absolutely cuckoo bananas if she didn't even know who she talked to and that would be fun to play.

    * Do more magic in general. I'm planning on a solo narrative + triumphant journal post about it sometime in the very near future for her but I do want to get her more actively tinkering around with the occult with other people. Coven? Occult Young Avengers? Any proper Occultists accepting an apprentice? Whatever. I'm down.

    * Maaaaaaybe getting booted from Haven? I imagine it would take A Lot for her to earn it. And I'm open to suggestions as to what sort of tomfoolery Nives could get up to to warrant getting the boot. But it'd be fun to play a frantic Nives trying to find a place to live and learn how to really be responsible for herself for the first time ever.

    * And in the far flung fantasies that probably aren't even possible category: I'd really, really, really LOVE to see a Baddie discover what Nives' Natural ability once was (touched based disintegration) and possibly try to break the Library binding on it to wreak havoc. Whether or not this baddie would be successful at this would, of course, be entirely up to mod discretion.

*First, shameless begging! I think I need to log with her, so if anyone would be open for literally any kind of interaction please let me know..

*And that being said, I would love people she is but has to act not-violently opposed to. As a Librarian she obviously has to maintain neutrality, but she's a very passionate person, sadly. Really this could be anyone, but they would probably skew corrupt (vendors, maybe?) and/or fairly religious, since the former atheist kinks in her psyche are still being worked out.

    * Really, religious people to banter with in general would be nice because she still doesn't see how there can be a God. And why did it have to be THAT God? These are the things she doesn't understand. It would be very nice to have her actually reluctantly befriend one of these, too.

    • Someone to save, or at least guide, or act as confessor for.
    • Someone to not save. Owen knows this isn't Pokemon; you can't really get them all. I'd like a friend who can be respectful of his faith, and he can be respectful that they aren't yet ready to accept God into their heart (though hopeful that one day this may change, of course).
    • Someone to teach. Must be a person with faith in their life, and a goal they have yet to reach.
    • Someone to tempt him. The usual sorts won't actually work, in this case - he isn't attracted to vice so much as humanity. This might ordinarily wind up as a ship sort of line, but I should say upfront that it won't get to that level - he might like it to, but with his history in mind, Owen would make the conscious choice to walk away instead of ruining her life and damning himself for eternity.
    • Someone to butt heads with. This might be Tel (Julie?), but that doesn't mean it couldn't be others as well.

    • An owner for Alice's talisman! It's been floating around between NPCs, but Laura and I would love to have an actual in-game keeper to bounce off.
    • I know how to make this happen character-wise, but I'm lodging it as a suggestion -- I'm envisioning a small arc involving Dominic's health taking a turn for the worse (possibly through an accident with Arazia's powers), which leads to needing healing from Vaughn? Because that bodes for all sorts of interesting IMO, and I want more Vaughn. 8)
    • ‘The Transporter’! A really awful magical item (one that makes others violent/angry? a One Ring effect?) falls into the hands of mortal police. Other magical people are also Very Interested in obtaining this artifact, but Dominic's sent by Market to bail it out of police custody. And while it's being transported, it has a collateral effect on all the mundanes in his vicinity as he moves. LOTS OF MESS. LOTS OF ACTION. And cleanup for the Librarians!
    • Alice's talisman getting stolen, perhaps; either by an insidious party or a sympathetic party which then allows the Munroes to be together moar?
    • Experts in magical artifacts! I'm always in need of more people Dom can talk to for advice, consultation, etc.

    • More people to get involved with & help wrap up the Collector storyline!
    • People who can help with permanently inducing or amplifying magical abilities -- in particular, he desperately wants to 1) regain his teleportation, 2) open a proper portal back to hell.
    • As a corollary to above, maybe he does open a portal to go back home, but it backfires horridly and unleashes awful creatures into the mundane plane?
    • I would kill for a hell-based demon with a massive hate-on for Temeluchus. Possibly they were neck-to-neck rivals before the Tartaruch fell, or perhaps they were an inferior ground under Temeluchus' heel who now ranks above him in the pecking order, and is delighting in it. I have a plotline in mind in which a demonic rival starts hunting down & killing off Temeluchus' charges/wards -- ideally, the smackdown for doing this would be hardcore, so I'm leaning towards willingness to fuck up your character, but I'm open to negotation tbh.
    • Considering he's got degrees of mutual understanding with both of the angels in-game so far, I'd love to see a bigger enemy in the form of an angel. I describe it in his storylines post like so: "Incompatible and unsympathetic, a soldier staring across the party line at Temeluchus as a sort of Benedict Arnold or Quisling. God, how they hate each other. Temeluchus hates them so much it gives him energy. They has to get up early in the morning to hate each other because there isn't time enough in the day."

    • THE LIBRARY:
      • I want more Library bonding! Perhaps a work party of some sort, just to get all of them socialising in the same spot and so we can see how they function as a group?
      • The Pied Piper storyline still needs to be wrapped up, correct? Moar work for our folk to do!
      • Also, I desperately do want Catherine to graduate to full Librarian status eventually as Market-monitor. Things I want to see before that point: her shadowing a member from each Library department and learning from them in turn; a combat/ability practice log with a trainer; participation in some sort of successful mission, which would feed directly into her finally passing to full status.

    • Market work: I have this idea of her using her powers and spotting some smuggling~~ going on and thus unravelling a (small!) operation with some help. Maybe this could be the graduation proof, idk. Things I need for this: shady vendors, Merchants to be annoyed or grudgingly grateful as to the Library's involvement?
    • I want to see a big-ass electrical storm (Furtur?) overcharging her powers, leading to Catherine blasting and breaking things, and then her abilities going on fritz after that -- shorting out electronics and blowing up powerlines wherever she goes. Which will lead to some time in seclusion out in the countryside to train herself & get her abilities back under control.
    • Iiiii am sadistic and also kind of want someone to find out about her Market talisman and surgically remove it, thus temporarily rendering her Mundane for a while (her latent abilities depend upon the Market magic propping the metaphorical door open), before she's able to have a new one installed.

HELLO I AM HERE. Horrendously belated, kill me now, but yes. I'm going to post here before I scamper off to catch up with the solstice thread.

  • An oracle/seer/something similar for him to latch on to as a precaution against being caught with his dick in hand when the prophetic dreams the Nephilim are so good at having (less so at understanding) start rolling in across the collective Neph mindscape.
  • Julie and I have said this before, but it bears repeating: if anyone wants to stumble across his (or his brother's?) REAL NAME~*~ and use it for Nefarious Purposes, THAT WOULD BE GREAT. Like, really really great. I'd love to see how he/they would handle such a situation, whether they'd turn to the angels for help... &c
  • Also I would love to have him trampling all across the Library for whatever reason and ruffling their feathers (heh), whether intentionally or not.

I think I shot myself in the foot because a great deal of Rainer's current drive involves his brother, but as the sweet lady who was meant to pick him up probably can't commit to a game of this scale right now, I am going to have to break him out of that mindset -- or, at the very least, get myself to move past it and get him latched onto other things!
  • I would love if another Occultist who practices magic that is, uhm, less than socially acceptable (on par with his necromancy, let's say) and is way more into using it for their own gain/others' detriment is chummy with Rainer, which would eventually lead to this person influencing him to use his own abilities more for the Greater Evil than he normally would.
  • Lis, I must ping you about Magic Box Plot.
  • I kind of want the Library to become a bit more aware of him, but of course that requires him to do something that is majorly balance-shifting. OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS, &c.

    Wants a female bestie.

Seriously, that's all I want. Someone with a heart to help melt this flinty djinni! A FEMALE FRIEND WITH WHOM SHE CAN TRY TO BE NORMAL AND LEARN HOW NORMAL WOMEN ARE SUPPOSED TO BEHAVE. She can teach Marion about pop culture and favourite TV shows! Must have a healthy appreciation of schadenfreude & a rather robust exterior, though, because playful Marion is cruel and would probably get along best with someone possessing similar/familiar traits in that regard.
