Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Seamus Finnigan & Neville Longbottom
What: BAMFs, that's what.
When: Friday, 15 April
Where: Hogwarts
Rating: PG-13

The last thing Neville had expected when he'd ducked into the Room of Requirement, dodging an Inquisitorial Squad patrol, was to find himself in a cozy space that resembled not at all the training room he had become so familiar with. Plain hammocks were strung up between the walls with warm blankets, and there were sturdy jugs and cups on low tables. He thought he recognized some of the books on the shelves on the near wall, tomes on Defense Against the Dark Arts and countercurses he was sure he and Ginny had been using only a few weeks ago.

Of course he wanted to show Seamus and straightaway, the IS be damned. The pair were hurrying from the common room now, and Neville flashed his housemate an excited grin.

"You won't believe it, Shay. It was like the Room of Requirement was inviting us in."

Seamus hurried to keep up with Nev, feeling a surge of hope for the first time since he'd returned from Easter hols. As upset as he was at what he'd found out at home, he'd realized once he'd come back that things at school really were infinitely worse. Over the past week, he'd made a habit of testing the Carrows - finding that he was no longer able to stand their "lessons" for even a moment - and had borne the brunt of their wrath.

He'd served two detentions this week. The first, with Amycus, had taken the pain of the blood quills to a new level. He'd been made to draw straight lines on long pieces of parchment over and over, until his back was a mess of bleeding lines. His second, with Alecto, had been even more direct. Cruciatus, straight out. His writhing had, of course, opened up the wounds on his back. It was putting it mildly to say that he could do with some good news.

"That's brilliant, Nev," he said, flashing a grin at his friend. "Did y'have t'ask it for anythin' in particular?"

Neville shook his head, not even bothering to lower his voice.

"It just seemed to know what I needed. It's like Hogwarts wants us to fight back, just like Harry said," he continued, heart swelling at the thought of Harry, wondering what he was doing now. Things had certainly gotten worse within the past few weeks, and much though he was heartened by news of his Gran outwitting the clumsy Death Eaters the Dark Lord had sent after her, it was a sign that things would grow even worse, still.

"If the Carrows start going after kids, we'll hide them."

Seamus looked at Nev appraisingly. "That's some connection you've got there, Nev...sounds almost instinctive...like you're plugged into the room, or somethin'."

He was truly impressed that his friend seemed to have found a safe haven for them. The world around them was quickly and surely going mad, but Nev had found them a spot of peace, it seemed. "I can't wait t'see what's in there." He nodded at Nev's last statement. "Absolutely," he sucked in a pained breath as they moved a bit faster. "They've definitely been gettin' worse lately, and unfortunately, I can imagine we're goin' t'need t'use it soon."

He thought he heard footfalls in the distance but when he looked over his shoulder, the corridor was empty. Deciding he was just being paranoid, he followed Nev more quickly.

Neville blushed at Seamus' pronouncement, but his pride was curbed by his mate's labored breath. He knew that Seamus had been giving it as well as he was getting it lately, but that didn't make it any easier on Neville to know that his friends were hurting.

"Sooner than I thought," he observed quietly, a touch of nerve in his voice as two figures proceeded purposefully around the corner in the corridor ahead of them, making straight for the pair of Gryffindors.

This could be bad.

Seamus' head whipped around at the tone in Neville's voice, and he spotted the pair up ahead a moment after his friend did. "Fuck," he muttered under his breath. As the others drew closer it was evident that one was tall and gangly, the other short and lumpy. Both were habitually unkempt; Seamus thought he caught the odor of garlic off them even from halfway down the hall.

He tensed, prepared to fight or flee, whichever option proved best. "Nev, how d'you want t'play it?" They were just far enough away from the Room of Requirement that getting there was possible, but not without a bit of fancy footwork.

"Can't risk them knowing what we're up to," he whispered, the last word hardly more than a breath as the pair drew near. Inquisitorial Squad, surely, but Neville didn't recognize them, which meant they were at least in younger years.

And that much less prepared for how much practice he and Seamus had had.

"Out of bed for a snog, are we?"

But that hadn't come from one of the boys in front of them. Neville whipped around, not at all happy to see Draco Malfoy, flanked as per usual by Crabbe and Goyle.

Well, this just got more complicated.

Malfoy. Bloody, sodding, effing, hell. Seamus mentally ran through a catalogue of every curse word he knew as he turned around to face the three Slytherins behind them. Realizing it'd been a mistake to turn his back on the first pair, he could only hope that Nev was keeping an eye on them.

"I think you've got us confused with you lot," he smirked at the trio in front of him. "Pity you're stuck with those two, Malfoy. What's the matter, Travers not available?" Undoubtedly, Malfoy would be the only one of them who'd even understand that insult. "I'm on rounds t'night." He wasn't, but he hoped Malfoy wouldn't know that. Or ask what Neville was up to. He doubted that he'd be that lucky though.

Neville wasn't sure Malfoy would believe Seamus, or if it even mattered. As it happened, all the Slytherin did was smirk, eyes blank as iron as he observed the pair. Taunts might have worked on him in the past, but he was as changed as Neville was in their last year at school.

"I was under the impression that you and Travers had a special relationship," Malfoy observed, Crabbe and Goyle sniggering oafishly from behind. Neville cast his eyes back to the pair they'd first encountered, who looked neither pleased nor particularly interested in anything Seamus had to say.

They were clearly waiting for orders.

Jaw clenched, Neville planted both of his feet firmly against the stone floor of the corridor.

"I suppose we don't have to ask what you're doing out at this hour, Malfoy. Your dad's made sure you can do whatever you want at Hogwarts this year."

Seamus couldn't help but snort and roll his eyes a bit at Malfoy's taunt. He decided not to even dignify it with a response, choosing instead to mimic Neville's stance. He stood back to back with his friend, darting a look at the younger Slytherins before turning back to Malfoy in time to hear his answer to Nev's comment.

"Well, my father has always made sure I have the best, Longbottom," Malfoy looked down his pointy nose at them both, a sneer curling his pale, thin lips. "I don't suppose either of you can say the same about yours, though."

Seamus had had enough. He could barely focus as he heard Malfoy mutter something to his cohorts about 'what could you expect when one was sired by a nutter and the other by a Muggle.' Malfoy's voice seemed to come from a long distance away; the haze of anger that had settled over him seemed to muffle everything else. He was too angry to even remember to use his wand, and before he truly knew what was happening, his fist was connecting with Malfoy's jaw. The crunch brought sound rushing back in full volume and he realized that he'd pretty much blown any chance of them getting out of here easily.
