Who: George Weasley (and puppet!Fred), Lee Jordan, Alicia Spinnet, Oliver Wood, Charlie Weasley, Bill Weasley, Fleur Weasley, Remus, Tonks, and anyone else who would reasonably be dropping by the Twins' flat for their birthday bash.
What: The Weasley Twins turn 20!
When: BACKDATED Friday, April 1, 1998
Where: The flat above the WWW, 93 Diagon Alley.
Rating: PG-13 in case....

George surveyed the kitchen counter critically, wondering if there was enough Firewhiskey. They didn't have much, for some reason, and he could only hope that one of the guests would arrive with a bottle or two. Although, he thought briefly, given the grim atmosphere hovering over all of them most of the time now, he wasn't sure how many people would actually feel safe enough to venture out and attend their little shindig. Fred was downstairs, warding the shop and the street entrance to the flat, in fact. All the guests had been told to arrive via Floo, as it was marginally safer than walking through the Alley late at night now.

Shaking his head to clear it of the gathering - and uncharacteristic - negative thoughts, he set about finishing the food preparations, such as they were. A few bags of crisps were shaken out into bowls, some pretzels and popcorn likewise, and that, as they say, was that. Just as he finished, he heard Fred's footsteps pounding up the stairs and his voice calling out that he was heading to his bedroom to change. Immediately after, he heard the whoosh of the Floo. Calling over his shoulder as he fished around in a cabinet for some clean glasses, "Welcome, whoever you are, to the birthday party of the year - presents on the table! Alcohol in the kitchen!"

Despite the last party the Weasley family hosted getting crashed by Death Eaters, nothing was going to stop Charlie from stopping in for the twins' birthday party. It was nice to relax and not focus on the grim cloud that hovered over the country. Sometimes, a break from it all was needed and his brothers knew how to distract people.

The whoosh was followed by the man stumbling out of the fireplace and shaking the soot from his jacket. A flick of the wand cleaned up the dust on the floor and he followed the sound of George's voice.

"Who said I got you anything," he asked. Of course, he did. He dropped the package on the table.

Alicia already knew she was going to be early at the party. The twins’ request that everybody showed up via Floo meant that she had to Floo in from work. Either that or Apparate home, shower, get dressed, Apparate to the Leaky and from there Floo to the twins’ flat. No, it was easier for her to just get ready at work, and then Floo from there. Briefly she had considered the option of borrowing the twins’ bathroom and simply get ready there, but just as quickly as that idea had appeared she had banished it, not really trusting that full privacy could be ensured while in there for a bit longer than usual.

So once work was done, she had spent the time she could – without drawing too much attention – in the locker room, showering, dressing and even putting on a bit of make-up, before she had covered the dress up with her Healer robe and then Floo’ed to the flat in Diagon Alley.

“S’just me!” She called out, surprised to see that she wasn’t the first one to arrive. Once she had found her footing and cleaned off the soot, she shrugged off the Healer robe, and headed to the table she figured was for the presents.

“So, what is it?” she asked Charlie as she put her own present on the table. “Something lacy, I bet.”

George poked his head out of the kitchen after putting the glasses on the counter near the alcohol array. Hearing the tail end of Charlie and Alicia's comments, he couldn't help but make a bit of good-natured protest. "Oi, Charlie...you owe me after knocking me arse-over-tip in the shop yesterday." He smirked cheekily at his older brother. "Now, Fred, on the other hand, you don't owe a thing."

Turning to Alicia, he waggled his finger admonishingly at her. "Lacy? Don't go giving Charlie such ideas, Miss Spinnet." He leaned in and pulled her into an impromptu hug before stepping back and looking at her again. "You know that Fred and I can't wear lace...at least not the way Ronnie can."

"Oh, good. I can return his then." Charlie replied, laughing. He heard the other twin object from the bedroom and the man kicked the door lightly as the fireplace lit up again and Alicia stepped out. He smiled at the witch, fondly remembering their last encounter. She looked pretty, but before he could bring that up George pulled her into a hug.

"I don't want to know why he was wearing lace or why you want me to have bought these two prats anything of the sort," Charlie told her with a hint of over-the-top disgust in his voice. "You look great, by the way."

Chuckling Alicia stepped into George’s hug, giving him a quick peck on the cheek. “Happy birthday, old man,” she teased him, before he released her, and she found herself looking up at two Weasley brothers.

“Thank you, you too,” she smiled back at Charlie, before she looked to each of them in turn, as if she wasn’t understanding where they were coming from. “Yes, Ron can wear lace like nobody’s business,” she agreed with George, remembering the horror that the youngest Weasley brother had shown up in for the Yule Ball, “but don’t think he’s the only one. Seriously, you and Fred would look absolutely adorable in lace, and personally I think it’s a fabric that is entirely too often overlooked when it comes to men’s clothes. Not unlike tulle.”

“So, do you need any help or is everything ready?”

"Why thank you, Charlie, I didn't know you'd noticed," George quipped, purposely intercepting the compliment his brother had intended for Alicia. "I think twenty agrees with me."

He turned to Alicia, "although it hardly makes me an old man, Spinnet." He winked at her. "Besides, Fred was the one who was born first, so if anyone's an old man, it's him." There was more muffled cursing from the bedroom, and George shouted at the door. "Oi! You know it's true! And what is taking you so long? Even Ginny doesn't take that long to change."

Purposely ignoring Alicia's comments on lace and tulle, he answered her question instead. "Nah, everything's set up in the kitchen, just go on and grab a drink."

Alicia cast a worried glance towards the bedroom door. “Is he trying to dress himself in there?” Waving off that notion she looked back to George. “You’ll always be older than me, and just be glad you’ve graduated from boy to man, yeah?” Patting his chest she smirked up at him. “And for that, I’ll let you keep my compliment. Happy Birthday, dear.”

She looked in the direction of the kitchen. “How much of what’s on that table is safe to drink without risking my memory of tonight?” Alicia had never been one to drink a lot, for the very simple reason that it only took a couple of whiffs of alcohol for her to be very drunk. Even at nineteen, she had learned her lesson.

"You know, he is. I tried to talk him out of it, but he insisted." He shot a cheeky grin at Alicia. "He can get into a right strop if he doesn't get his way, y'know." Nodding, he accepted her compliment with a wink. "I'll gladly accept any compliments you want to give me."

He laughed when she asked about the drinks. "Well, that depends on your definition of 'safe'. I would say definitely steer clear of anything green or...um...purple. Other than that, you should be fine. I think there's some Butterbeer in there, but we're a bit low on Firewhiskey tonight. Sorry."

“Oof, no, please, no stroppy Fred,” Alicia’s face scrunched up just at the thought of that, though soon after it settled on a teasing smirk as she leaned closer to George, looking ready to share a secret with him. “You know,” she started, her voice lowered for dramatic effect, “it was actually Charlie who said you looked great tonight. I’m just letting you keep it.” With a wink to match his, she sauntered off towards the kitchen.

Out there, she considered the selection of bottles. “Keep away from the green and the purple...” she muttered to herself, not really fancying Butterbeer, but still not certain what to get. “Oi! George!? You have anything sparkly?” Sparkly seemed like a good place to start, and whether it was glittery sparkly or bubbly sparkly didn’t really matter.

George snorted out a laugh. "Well, between the two of us he did end up with the terrible temper." This was a lie, and all their friends knew it. While the twins occasionally had their moods, neither of them was what one would call ill-tempered. He smiled and leaned in when she lowered her voice. "Aww, Alicia that is very kind...but it would be kinder if you didn't bring up my brother," he winked at her before stepping back and pointing the way to the kitchen with a flourish.

"Sparkly? Hmm...we've got some mead, and elderflower wine...not sure either of those qualifies," he mused as he followed her into the kitchen. He rummaged through the woefully small supply of bottles, coming up with one he'd forgotten about. "Or, there's this...red currant rum. It might or might not be sparkly, but it does pack a punch."

Given she couldn't drink, had trouble dancing, and had already received a raised eyebrow from Remus for yawning, Tonks wasn't sure she could technically call herself "partying," but it was the spirit of the thing, wasn't it?

Lingering near the table of presents and peeping where the corners of wild wrappings had come undone, Tonks' stifled her curiosity. It wouldn't do to go opening someone else's presents, even if they were Fred and George's.

But there was one with the bow askew and nothing but a bit of tissue...

"Can't blame rudeness on the hormones," she muttered, though her expression immediately after suggested she was considering it.

George made a tsking noise as he crept up on where Tonks was sitting, observing the intense curiosity in her gaze as she fixated on the table piled with presents. "Now Tonks," he began, "you wouldn't by any chance be contemplating peeking at presents that don't belong to you, would you?"

He crossed his arms and shook his head disapprovingly. Sighing, he moved to sit next to her. "And here I had a present that was all for you, but I'm not sure I should give it to you now."

Grinning, Tonks lifted her glass of punch in George's direction, sloshing the tiniest bit over the rim onto the rug.

"I wouldn't keep what's inside!" She insisted with a laugh. "I just can't help myself. Maybe... you give me my present and open one of yours?"

Being pregnant did have its benefits, like foot rubs from Remus and gifts from friends. Her favorite so far was a little knitted hat with fuzzy wool ears from Molly, which perhaps hit too close to home for Remus but was positively adorable as far as Tonks was concerned.

"Hmmm," George pretended to consider her deal, stretching his legs in front of him and tilting his head to the side slightly. "I don't know about that. Fred might get jealous that I didn't wait for him." He was teasing, mostly, especially seeing as Fred had practically glued himself to Angelina since she'd arrived and he'd only seen him across the room for the better part of the last hour.

He looked at Tonks with mock seriousness. "Besides, who'd want to see our presents when they could be opening this," he pulled a small, brightly-wrapped package from his pocket and waved it in front of her. "This is a really good present - one of our best new products, even if I do say so myself. You're the first to have one." He put the package on the couch near where she was sitting and gestured for her to open it.

George smiled at her enthusiasm, watching eagerly as the toy within the package was revealed. He was almost as curious as Tonks, interested in seeing what she thought of it. It was a soft, plush yellow duck with bright eyes and an orange bill and feet. Or at least, it was at the moment.

"Animare," George whispered, pointing his wand at the toy, watching as it started to quack softly, before shifting shape, eventually transitioning into a bleating sheep, then a croaking frog, and a purring kitten. He looked away as it continued to transform, watching Tonks' face to see her reaction.

"Ohhhh, George!" Tonks squeaked with pleasure, both transforming toy and her overlarge belly keeping her from leaning over to give George a well-earned hug. "Since when did you start giving presents meant for Remus to me?"

Though she teased him, Tonks was truly delighted. The nearer she grew - literally - to her due date, the more excited Tonks was to meet the little person who seemed just as eager to meet her, if his moving around were any indication.

"I don't know that I can picture the professor with one of these," George chuckled. He was pleased that she seemed to like the toy, and he glanced at it again to see if it were still working properly. It was still transforming - now it was a barking puppy and he could see it starting to become a clucking chick. He knew there were only a couple more animals left in the toy's cycle before it turned back into a duck and started over. "You inspired it, you know," he said quietly, looking at her out of the corner of his eye, hoping she wouldn't mistake his meaning.
