Who: Susan and Regan
What: Prefect-y duties
When: (backdated) October 1996, just after curfew
Where: various hallways
Rating: Low

The whole prefect thing was still very new for Susan. She had only been wearing the badge for a few weeks now, ever since Hannah had to leave because of her mum. She missed her best friend, now that she was staying home and didn't seem to know quite when she would be ready to come back. They had been writing letters back and forth and, of course, Susan's mum was trying her best to help the Abbotts through all of this, but Susan felt pretty useless being here at Hogwarts. It seemed like the most she could do was try and keep Hannah up to date in the classes they had together and taking over her position as a prefect.

So, now Susan stood in the middle of the Great Hall, waiting for her partner for rounds. So far, she had only done rounds a few times and they always seemed to be fairly boring, unless she was doing them with a good friend. But, tonight she was stuck with Regan Avery, a Slytherin fifth year and she was not looking forward to it. She didn't know Regan well, but the two had butted heads in the past and she didn't have high hopes for tonight.

While she waited, she was reading a letter from her mum that had arrived during dinner. It was just the usual update from home; talking about her dad's business, about things at the WWN, Quidditch updates, as if Susan didn't listen to her mum's show... Nothing terribly exciting.

Four months. It had been over four months since her father had been taken to prison. She wasn't home but she could tell her brother and mother were fighting. Their letters did little to hide the tension. She knew people questioned her being a Prefect, especially since her father had attacked their precious Potter but she didn't care. She knew she wasn't easy to work with lately but she was on edge. They had no idea who her family was and she was tired of being judged.

"Susan," she said, arriving behind the girl as she read her letter. "I'm sure that's terribly exciting but we really should be getting started. I'd hate to miss something because we were dawdling."

Susan heard Regan's footsteps drawing closer as she tried to quickly finish the letter. The Slytherin comment on her letter, making it sound as though Susan was being slow. But, of course, she had been waiting for a few minutes now, Regan was the one who was dawdling.

"Of course," she replied. "I was just waiting." She folded the letter and tucked it into the pocket of her robes. Straightening herself up she looked over at Regan.

"Where do you suppose we should start?"

"Might as well start here. The corridors should be clear but if they're not we can quickly correct that." Regan wished you could choose your partner. She saw little sense in having to play nice with someone. It hardly encouraged quality work. If they felt the need to make sure the prefects were balanced and objective then they should find better people to be prefects. "Unless there was something else you had in mind?"
