Entry tags:character: parvati patil, character: seamus finnigan, etc: complete

Who: Seamus Finnigan, Parvati Patil
What: Seamus alllllmost missed celebrating Parvati's birthday. What's she going to do with such a naughty boyfriend?
When: BACKDATED Wednesday, March 23, 1998 (evening)
Where: Gryffindor Common Room and then one of the courtyards.
Rating: PG to start

Seamus paced nervously in front of the common room fireplace, kicking himself mentally for his mistake. He kept telling himself that it wasn't so much a mistake as it was a lack of having the proper information to start with - he hadn't known that today was Parvati and Padma's birthday until Lav had mentioned it to him at lunch. Well. Hissed it at him when Parvati had gone to speak to Padma at the Ravenclaw table was more like it. How was he to know? Before they'd been dating, he'd never really known when her birthday was, and she hadn't made any fuss about anything at all this morning.

But he still felt like a bad boyfriend. He should have known...he should have at some point asked when her birthday was so it wouldn't have snuck up on him like this. He paced slightly faster as he chewed on his thumbnail. What if she were really hacked off with him? What if she wanted to chuck him? The rational part of his brain knew that he was overreacting, but he was having trouble listening to it right now. He could only hope that the plan he'd concocted could salvage things. He continued to pace until he heard the portrait hole opening, his head turning towards the sound, simultaneously hoping and fearing it might be her.

Parvati's birthday had been a rather good one, and though she'd already been of age for a year, there was something exciting about being eighteen. It was an exciting year, the one where everyone left Hogwarts and started their real adult life. And though she still had a few months, and she had no idea what her post-Hogwarts life would be like, with the world a bit topsy-turvy, it was still exciting.

It wasn't until about halfway through the day that she realized that Seamus didn't know it was her birthday. She felt a little bit awkward about it, as she didn't exactly want to tell him, because then it would sound like she expected something. And it wasn't like he was really obligated to know, since they'd only been dating for just over a month. But if the roles had been reversed she wouldn't have wanted to miss it. Regardless, she'd decided the easiest thing would be to just sidestep the issue completely.

That evening she'd run into an IS member in the hallway, which had left her frazzled after a number of questions about prefect rounds the week before. Stepping through the portrait hole she spotted Seamus and headed over to him. "Evening," she said with a weak smile, trying to wipe the interaction she had out of her mind. "How are you?"

It was her. Seamus forced himself to stop fidgeting and smile warmly at her. She looked a bit troubled about something, he noticed as she came closer to him. He wondered if it was his lack of birthday attention that was bothering her. "I'm alright love," he reached out and pulled her into a hug before leaning back to look in her eyes. "You look a bit like somethin's botherin' you, though."

He gently slid one hand up from her back and wove his fingers into her hair, watching her carefully all the while in the event she was going to get upset with him. "Did y'have a rough day?" Hopefully, her answer would help him figure out how much trouble he might or might not be in.

Parvati returned the hug, keeping her arms around him once he pulled back a bit. "It was actually a pretty good day," she said with a bit of a smile and a nod. "Spent some time with Padma, and got some things done and all. But it's just the IS. Can one of us polyjuice Snape and disband them or something?" she asked, the last sentence taking on a bit of a whining quality.

"How was your day? Don't feel like I've seen you all that much, well, since lunch at least. Did you have a good one?" she asked with a warm grin.

"Mmm?" his eyebrows quirked up when she said it had been a good day. He was glad of that, and as she went on to describe what was the root of her discontent, he said a silent thank you that she wasn't upset with him. He chuckled at her suggestion. "Y'know, lass, if the thought - and the potion - weren't so repulsive, I think you'd probably have a fair number of people itchin' t'try."

He shrugged slightly. "My day was alright. I seem t'have more classes on Wednesdays than almost any other day...and windin' up with DADA is not high on my list of favorite things, but..." he smiled at her, "...it's taken a turn for the better in the last five minutes." He leaned back in and pressed a kiss against her temple. Taking a chance that she wouldn't hex him for appearing to forget it, he murmured "happy birthday, love."

Parvati broke into a grin when he said that the day had improved, pulling him closer. But when he wished her a happy birthday, she pulled away to look at him, grin widening. "You did know!" she said brightly. "When you didn't say anything earlier I didn't know if you did or not, and then I didn't want to say anything so I didn't know what to do, but you knew!"

Leaning up, she rewarded him with a kiss. "What a good boyfriend, knowing my birthday after only a month. I knew I picked well."

Seamus involuntarily stiffened a bit in her embrace, panicking just a little. What did he do? Ascribe to honesty being the best policy and tell her he hadn't originally known? That might earn him the hacked off reaction he'd been afraid of. But lying and saying he had known somehow didn't seem right to him either.

He sighed lightly. Maybe there was a compromise. Pulling back to look at her, he smiled gently. "Well, a little bird might've helped me out," he leaned in and kissed her softly, "but I do have somethin' planned now that I hope you'll like."

"Well, remind me to thank the bird, then," she said with a grin, accepting his kiss eagerly. She supposed it didn't really matter how he knew, but that he did, and he'd done something, was rather brilliant in and of itself.

"So what'd you do?" she asked excitedly, pulling back so that they were at arm's length their hands were clasped. Swinging his hands she batted her eyes at him playfully. "Where's my gift?"

Seamus silently reminded himself that he owed Lav a huge thank you the next time he saw her. It seemed that she'd helped him to avert a potential crisis. "Will do," he murmured with a smile as their kiss finally ended.

"Ah, well, for that bit we'll need t'venture outside for just a little while," he looked at her, affecting his best serious look though inside he was beginning to feel a bit giddy at the thought of sharing his surprise with her. "I think we have enough time before curfew t'get t'where we need t'go." He gestured to the couch across from where they stood. "I've got your cloak, thanks t'Lav, if you're ready?"

"We're going somewhere?" Parvati asked, curiosity peaked. Nodding, she pulled on her cloak, watching him closely for any clues. He wasn't giving away much, though, and she gave him an inquisitive look. "I'm ready," she said, taking his hand again. "Where to? Well, outside. But where outside?"

He smirked at her and waggled an admonishing finger in her direction. "Uh uh, not so fast, lass. Y'won't get round me that easily. It's a surprise." He took her arm and turned her gently toward the portrait hole. "You'll just have t'trust me for a bit."

He led them out into the corridor and started walking at a slightly quicker-than-average speed. Though they did have time before curfew, he didn't want to chance an encounter with the IS or the Carrows. He was still a bit nervous about the surprise, as it was the best he'd been able to do on short notice, but he was markedly more cheery than he'd been earlier in the evening.

"Fine!" she said in a playful tone, pretending to be mad that he was keeping her in the dark, though not really. Letting him lead her out the common room she matched his pace as they went through the corridors.

"So do I get a clue, at least?" she asked, watching for people as they walked through the castle, but at the same time hoping not to run in to anyone, as the last thing she wanted was to be sidetracked.

"Hmmm," he mulled it over, trying to decide what he could safely reveal to her. "Well, there's a bit of sparkle, somethin' bright, and somethin' sweet," he winked at her, "and I'm afraid that's all you're goin' t'get me t'confess, love."

They descended the many winding staircases in the castle, until they reached the main entry hall. He steered them towards one of the more secluded side courtyards, not going too far outside. He didn't want to tempt fate and have them get caught. "Stand here," he said to Parvati, "and close you're eyes until I tell you t'open them, yeah?"

"Well I love sparkly things, and sweet things, and I don't know that I've come across a bright thing I don't like, either." Parvati said with a laugh. "So it sounds like you're on the right track, at least. Though I won't know for sure until I see it, of course."

When they reached the hall Parvati stilled and gave him a playful look. "You're lucky I trust you," she said with a playful grin, but did as she was told. This was Seamus, after all - if she couldn't trust him she was probably in a bit of trouble. Covering her eyes with her hands, she strained her ears for any hint of noise. "How long?"

"Patience, love," he said as she closed her eyes, "this shouldn't take more'n a minute." After waving his hand in front of her face to make sure she wasn't peeking, he sprang into action. He dug around in his robes finding a small parcel that he'd made even smaller with a shrinking spell. Taking it out and enlarging it, he started removing items from it.

He set a chocolate cupcake on a nearby bench and then pulled out a handful of miniature fireworks he'd purchased last summer from the Wheezes. They were supposed to pack all the punch of normal fireworks but in an unobtrusive size - for "special celebrations in crowded places" the box had said - and he hoped they lived up to that promise. They'd come so far, he didn't want to be interrupted now. He placed a candle on the cupcake, lit it, and patted his pocket in search of the one remaining element of his surprise, wanting to make sure it was still there.

Stepping up behind her, he turned her in the direction of the bench, so that she'd see the cupcake when she opened her eyes. "Alright lass," he leaned in and whispered in her ear, "y'can look now."

"Patience hasn't ever been my strong suit," Parvati said with a good-natured grin, but did her best to avoid the urge to peek. She hear some undefined rustling, as well as a couple of quiet spells, though she couldn't pinpoint what they were.

When Seamus repositioned her she turned her head in the direction of his voice, and the first thing she did upon uncovering her eyes was give him a quick kiss. Then she turned to the bench and broke into a grin, dropping her to knees in front of it and giving Seamus' hand a tug so that he would join her. "Oh, a cupcake! How cute! And... fireworks? Oh, from the Weasleys! I saw them in their shop last time I was there." Giving his hand a squeeze, she turned to him with a mischievous look. "So are you going to sing so that I can blow out my candle?"

"I'll have t'remember that in the future," he murmured. Taken by surprise when she kissed him, Seamus was nevertheless quite pleased, and spent a moment just letting himself get lost in her. He pulled back with a smile. "That's right distractin', that is."

He knelt next to her at her urging, enjoying the look of pleasure on her face when she saw the cupcake. He whispered the incantation to light the fireworks and, true to the package's promise, small, sparkly lights danced and zoomed just above the grass and around the bench, illuminating the pair of them where they knelt. The flickering light they created made everything feel somehow more intimate.

As she turned to him and asked him to sing, he couldn't resist surprising her this time and leaned for a quick but intense kiss. "Y'might just convince me t'sing...if y'promise t'make your wish a really good one," he said softly, smiling at her.

Seamus succeeded in surprising her with the kiss and she gave a pleased sigh, toying with the idea of forgoing the singing and anything else that might be planned and instead just doing that for the rest of the night. It was her birthday, after all, and she ought to be able to do whatever she wanted. She also doubted that Seamus would have any objections, as he seemed to enjoy it as much as she did.

But they were in the middle of a courtyard, and she didn't know when else she'd get a chance to hear Seamus sing, so with effort she pulled away, nodding as she hugged her knees to her chest. "I promise to make it a brilliant one," she said, nodding eagerly.

Seamus swallowed slowly, part of him not believing that he'd just agreed to do this. There were very few people - practically none outside of his family - who knew that he had a bit of a talent for singing. Lav knew, because she'd known him so long, and Dean, though he'd never sang in front of his best mate. It wasn't exactly the sort of thing that went on in the boys' dorms.

He took a deep breath and looked into her dark eyes, which were shining at him in anticipation. Very softly, he began singing happy birthday to her, but he chose to sing it in Gaelic, he felt a bit less embarrassed that way.

"Lá Breithe Sona dhuit, Lá Breithe Sona dhuit, Lá Breithe Sona a Parvati, Lá Breithe Sona dhuit." He smiled at her before nodding in the direction of the cupcake. "Better make your wish before the candle's gone," he murmured. He ducked his head, feeling himself blush a bit and hoping she couldn't see.

"Oh, Shay!" she said, grin broadening even more. "That was... well, brilliant doesn't even begin to cover it! I didn't know you were proper good at singing!" She saw him duck his head and ducked her own to try to catch his eye, noticing his blush and thinking him even more attractive with it, though she could tell he was a little self-conscious. Parvati wasn't sure why, since he'd been so good, but thought it best to divert her attention elsewhere momentarily.

Focusing on the cupcake she closed her eyes to make her wish, and then opened them to blow the candle out. Then she decided it really was up to her to make her wish come true, and promptly crawled into his lap and wrapped her arms around his neck, giving him a proper kiss.

He looked back up at her, glad to see she was smiling. When she called his singing brilliant, he couldn't help but blush in earnest. "Thanks," he mumbled, "I don't...often." He thought of singing for his Mam, and a pang of homesickness suddenly shot through him before he shook it off and focused on Parvati again. "Really, lass, thanks."

He watched her as she closed her eyes and blew out the candle, admiring the way the fireworks played over her face and hair. He said yet another silent thanks that they'd somehow found their way to this place together, marveling at the one truly good thing this horrible year had brought him. He moved to find the little pouch with her present in it, which was still in his pocket, but before he knew it he had a lapful of extremely enthusiastic girlfriend.

Not that he was in any way complaining.

Sliding his arms around her waist, he returned the kiss. He pulled her closer, and proceeded to lose himself in her. They'd snogged often over the last couple of months, but her being in his lap was new.

And bleedin' amazin', he thought, before promptly losing touch with whatever bit of coherence he had left.

Pulling back eventually, he imagined that if he looked like he felt, his expression would be rather dazed. He cleared his throat and smiled at her, "well," he murmured, "if that was your birthday wish, y'definitely don't have t'wait another year t'do it again."

He was definitely cuter when he blushed, she decided, though she wasn't sure why. And she didn't really feel like analyzing the whys at the moment, since she was thoroughly distracted elsewhere. Parvati was generally fond of kissing Seamus, and this was no exception, with the darkened courtyard and fireworks and recently snuffed out candle only adding to the whole effect. This really was a brilliant way to spend her eighteenth birthday, she thought, and then stopped thinking, since Seamus tended to have that effect on her.

When they finally broke apart he looked as dazed as she felt, and she grinned softly as he talked, brushing the hair off his forehead gently. "I had this feeling you wouldn't mind," she said with a quiet laugh. "Glad my sixth sense about you was right."

Parvati gave him one more quick kiss, then turned so that her back was to him and she was leaning against him, wrapping his arms securely around her. She watched as the last of the fireworks petered out, and then she turned her attention to the cupcake, pulling back the liner and taking a bite. After a second bite she silently offered the cake to him, attending to some frosting that had ended up on the thumb of her free hand.

He chuckled at that. "Me too, love, me too."

Wrapping his arms around her as she settled back against him, his gaze followed hers to the dying of the fireworks. Luckily, after they faded, the moonlight was bright enough that they could still see each other dimly. He gladly took a bite of the cupcake when she offered it to him, suppressing a whimper at the sight of her licking the frosting off her thumb. "S'good," he managed after swallowing the bite of cake. "I asked them for somethin' special in the kitchens, and they definitely came through."

Remembering he had one more element to this birthday surprise, he reached into his pocket with his free hand, finding the little drawstring pouch that was there. Pulling it out, he brought it around and held it in front of her, leaning in to whisper in her ear, "now that we've had cake and singin', would y'like t'open your present?"

Parvati was generally a talker, but occasionally she found herself in the presence of people that she could have a comfortable silence with. Seamus was one of those people and she quite enjoyed sitting in the cool night air with him. "They did. You did too," she said, pleased, and shifted to plant a quick kiss on his cheek before returning to her previous position.

When she felt him move Parvati wasn't sure if he was doing so in order to get up, but then he showed her the gift, and she broke into a small laugh. "There's more?" She covered his hands with hers and nodded. "I would love to open my present. You did quite well for someone who didn't know it was my birthday until today," she teased lightly.

"Thanks," he murmured, resting his cheek against her hair as she took the gift from him. He laughed slightly. "Well, I move pretty quick when I've got the proper motivation, y'know." He hugged her gently.

Thinking of the necklace he'd fashioned from a coin he'd had in his trunk, he became slightly nervous again. Maybe she'd think it was a bit cheap. "I had t'make do with what I had on hand, so I hope y'like it." He'd used a spell to carve out little bits of the metal, making a pattern he hoped she'd like.

Parvati opened up the pouch and pulled out the necklace, breaking into a grin as she carefully examined it. "Oh, Shay!" she said again, turning to give him a proper kiss. "I love it!" She focused on it again, turning the pendant around in her hands. "Is it a coin? It is, isn't. How clever."

Moving to give him a hug, Parvati held him for a long moment before pulling. "I really do love it, Shay, it's brill. Help me put it on?" she asked, turning her back to him and pulling her hair off her neck so that he could fasten it without the intrusion.

He breathed a sigh of relief when it became apparent that she liked her present. "Yeah, 'tis...made it usin' a charm my Da showed me. I'm glad y'like it, love."

Seamus held on to her, squeezing her tight when she hugged him before releasing her so she could turn around. "Of course," he murmured, fumbling briefly with the clasp before getting it open. He lifted the necklace over her head and brought the ends around behind her, closing the clasp and letting the weight of the coin settle around her neck. Before she could release her hair though, he ducked in close to her and pressed a kiss to her nape.

Reveling in the scent of her hair and the wondrous aura that had settled over them, he wrapped his arms around her waist from behind. Hugging her gently, he whispered in her ear. "Happy Birthday, love."
