Who: Sarah Fawcett
What: Sarah, inspired enraged by the Essential Guide to Your Defense Against Muggles, once again puts quill to parchment.
When: Tuesday, March 22, 1998
Where: Owl Post in Diagon Alley.
Rating: Moderate for strong political rhetoric
Sarah slipped into the Diagon Alley Owl Post Office, clutching a small envelope in her hand. She'd spent a fair bit of time laboring over its contents the previous evening after having come across a copy of An Essential Guide to Your Defense Against Muggles that one of her fellow Healers had left in the staff lounge during one of her breaks yesterday. She moved to the counter, paid for postage, and selected an owl as calmly as possible, not wishing to be seen as nervous in any way, though she certainly was.
As she left the post office and continued down the Alley, heading to the Leaky in order to Floo in to the hospital and start her shift, she mentally reviewed the contents of her latest rebellious effort. Chewing her lip in thought, she hoped that this time she hadn't pushed things too far.
Madam Editor-
I have perused the Ministry's recently published 'Essential Guide,' which purports to describe the best methods for defending Magical citizens against their Muggle brethren. I am extremely disheartened, to say the least, that our government is continuing to put forth that which can be described at best as purposefully ignorant misinformation, and at worst as pure unadulterated rubbish.
The hypocritical pamphlet asserts that if large numbers of Muggles are aware of magic, it will heighten the likelihood of persecutions such as the Spanish Inquisition and the Salem Witch Trials. While these two events are indeed examples of one small sect of power hungry officials effectively persecuting a segment of society based solely on who they are, I ask only that we examine the Ministry's own recent policies in the same light. How are the activities of the Muggleborn Registration Commission any different than those of the Inquisition? Is the Commission not comprised of a small group of people who have taken control and are using - likely abusing - their power to oppress another group? And what is worse, this is the oppression of witches and wizards BY witches and wizards.
The 'Essential Guide' would have us believe that the only possible way Magical people could come under attack would be at the hands of Muggles. But I have proof of wizards I have recently met who were attacked by other wizards, simply for promoting what they believe in. That the 'Essential Guide' directs our attention to an as-yet-unrealized Muggle threat (and one which likely will never be realized), while ignoring the violence within our own society is hypocrisy in its worst form.
Furthermore, in addition to the already stated issues with the 'Essential Guide,' how can we overlook the abhorrent nature of a publication that advocates the "capture" and forceful obliviation of unsuspecting human beings? Our Ministry is openly suggesting that we actually attack other people as a means of preventing an imagined attack that might never materialize. If we follow this course, it is clear - Magical ability and blood status will no longer hold any sway, for we will all be no better than animals.
