From her seat behind her desk, Fleur could see a Death Eater. They had penetrated her workplace now and were making no attempt to hide. She knew from Bill that the Death Eaters were raiding the accounts of Muggleborn Wizards. It sickened her that she couldn't come out and defend those people who were being robbed, because to save a person a few precious items would be to sacrifice herself for something worth less than her life. Fleur had to be callous, and very, very careful. As much as she could help it, Fleur kept her eyes away from the commotion caused by the Death Eaters. If she paid attention to it, they might notice her. Fleur was kicking herself for not quitting sooner, but she had not envisioned this outcome. Her motivation for quitting used to be pre-emptive: she would leave before they figured out she was in the Order. Now, she wished she had left before they figured something more obvious out: that she was part-Veela. There would be two possible outcomes to her predicament. One; they could be attracted to her, hit on her, and when she refused their advances, they would get ugly. They would make things difficult for her and her husband. Or, they could simply not accept her refusal. Two; they could realise that she was a Half-breed and either try to recruit or destroy her. Fleur's palms were slick with sweat as she sat behind her desk, hoping that the Death Eaters would find no reason to question the Foreign Exchange desk. Given the large amounts of Muggle money at their disposal, Fleur doubted she would go unnoticed. Pretending to be very interested in her paperwork, Fleur made a snap decision. She would quit. She would fake an illness and leave. Almost as quickly as this thought popped into her head, she thought of Bill. Though he was perfectly capable of taking care of himself, Fleur immediately felt protective of him. If she left Gringotts and something happened to him, she would never forgive herself. Calmly, Fleur got up from her desk and wrote an inter-office memo asking Bill to come see her. She didn't know what she wanted from him, just that she needed to see him. |
