Tiny living

For several years my late husband, Ray, and I lived in studio apartment that was just a bit larger than 200 square feet. It had a real, if teeny, bathroom, and there was a kitchenette in one corner. Things were tightly crammed in, but we managed. For a couple years after that, we lived in a place a bit more than twice as big, which was a less cramped—but still tiny enough that it was an uncomfortable chore to have more than one or two friends visit...

Doctor Who Watch List

Thanks to all who replied to my last post, both on DW and LJ, I have a list-in-progress of must-see episodes that fall after The Armageddon Factor. Plus I've added a couple based on things I've seen/heard or because they're the first/last story for a Doctor, because it only makes sense to me to see their first and last stories if nothing else. Plus I threw in The Two Doctors just in the interest of seeing all the multi-Doctor episodes. Here's where it stands now:

Fourth Doctor
  • Destiny of the Daleks

  • City of Death

  • Warrior's Gate

  • The Keeper of Traken

  • Logopolis

Fifth Doctor
  • Castrovalva

  • Black Orchid

  • Time-Flight

  • Mawdryn Undead

  • Terminus

  • Enlightenment

  • The Five Doctors

  • Warriors of the Deep

  • The Caves of Androzani

Sixth Doctor
  • The Twin Dilemma

  • Attack of the Cybermen

  • The Mark of the Rani

  • The Two Doctors

  • The Trial of a Time Lord (which is apparently 14 episodes!)

Seventh Doctor
  • Time and the Rani

  • Dragonfire

  • Remembrance of the Daleks

  • The Greatest Show in the Galaxy

  • Battlefield

  • Ghost Light

  • The Curse of Fenric

  • Survival

Eighth Doctor
  • The Movie which seems to be universally regarded as craptastic, but doesn't really seem skippable

  • books/audio of some kind

Um, yeah, considering most of those are at least 4 episodes and one story is an entire 14-ep season, that's quite enough of a list to try and get through by November! :-D

Thanks, all, for the suggestions!

Time-Lapse of OK Tornado

To all my peeps in and around Oklahoma City, I hope you're safe in the wake of yesterday's vicious tornado that ripped through Moore.

This time-lapse footage of that tornado is just...it's stunning.

I live in a part of the U.S. where tornadoes are honestly not that common (although when they do come, they come in clusters as what happened in Western Massachusetts a couple of years ago). Microbursts, yeah. But monsters like this?

Dear God. That footage is pure nightmare fuel.

(Did I mention that my second-worst fear after heights is tornadoes? I'm really, really scared of tornadoes. I do not know how people in the U.S. Midwest/Southeast/Southwest can live with the constant threat of tornadoes over their heads. I really, and truly, do not. I will take the most violent of nor'easters — aka, a hurricane with snow — over a tornado any day.)

In the meantime, to help the Moore tornado victims, I'll be texting money via 90999 REDCROSS.

Mundanity and a slice of key lime pie

The pollen count as been up, and up, and up, and down, then up, then, not-quite-so up (but not enough of a drop to count as down), and so on for the last few weeks. So most days I have fairly bad hay fever. Couple that with some big deadlines at work, and my productivity on home projects, including my own writing, has not been great...

He Sneezed

Well, here it is, my first NCIS story. It's one of those shorts that authors have to write or they make us nuts. (more nuts?) I also really need a 'header list for NCIS'.

posting question

I just finished my first NCIS long story and a short. I'm going to post the long story in short chapters, one a day. But do you want the short first or what? I actually wrote the longer story in a notebook (while my computer was FUBAR) then typed it up on this one. I divided the 50K+ story into chapters after the fact.

So I'm going to post the long story, one chapter a day, then the short. Or short first?

Write it or lose it

My writing goal for this last weekend was to complete the cleanup on a novel so I can send it to some people who have volunteered to copy edit it. This goal was set before the really bad hay fever I’d had all week turned into a cold Friday. By the end of my work day Friday the sore throat, low grade fever, and rundown feeling required a short nap before I could even discuss dinner with my hubby...

Yes! Finally, another chapter. You wouldn't believe the problems ... oh, yeah, you would. I whined about them enough. *g*

So, enjoy.

Douche-dar

You know how sometimes the moment you meet some one you just know, before they say a single word, that you’re just not going to get along? Usually you can’t put your finger on it. It’s just a gut feeling. Something about the other person just puts you off right away...

Book Review: The Last Policeman

This book came out last year, but I just finished it recently. The Last Policeman, by Ben H. Winters, poses the question: what’s the point of solving a murder when the world is about to end?

knitting

A lady on my knitting guild bought a Vogue book. Now, I hate Vogue with a passion. I tried a couple of their patterns and they were riddled with errors. Not good. The one sweater that I actually finished doesn't fit right. I'm not sure why. Probably (just guessing) because it had 18 errors in the pattern, which I found out about when I went to the web site looking for errata. It looks ok, but it's too large in the arms and fits oddly across the waist.

So, anyway, she bought very nice and expensive silk yarn and started knitting. She was soon in the weeds. Nothing 'stacked' properly. We tried to figure out what she'd done wrong and spent over an hour counting stitches and reading the pattern. Then, one of the other ladies looked the pattern up on Vogue errata. Holy hell! It wouldn't stack properly because there was an error in the first stitch pattern that didn't show up until the fade into the next pattern. She had to either rip out everything or do something else. She decided to rip it out, abandon the Vogue pattern and use a different one. But that was still hours of time, hundreds of stitches, wasted.

I know many knitters that call it Vague knitting. So sad for my friend and fellow knitter.

Car show

I love my husband, I really do, but ....

Sometimes I wonder if he's all there. He loves car shows; me, not so much. I usually drive my truck so I can go home when I want.

Now. This is the first show we've had a vehicle in. The '55 Ford is finished and he wanted to show it. Ok. Good idea.

The bad part? He, unlike usual, made absolutely no plans for comfort. I suggested bringing chairs, cleaning kit and a cooler. He blew it off. So, he's still at the show, I'm home. I've had tea, a sandwich, salad and ice cream. He's got nothing, not even a place to sit. (Not allowed to sit in show car, insurance or something) I offered to get him a chair, cooler and Hardee's. He didn't want it. I think he got a hotdog from a vendor. I know he had a soda. I got it.

Now, why the heck did a man who carefully plans the weekly trip to the grocery store not plan an all day excursion to a car show?

Anyone?

Ye gods

The next chapter of 893 is finished, finally. I've never gone so long between chapters before. Getting the flu was bad enough, meds make my writing stream of consciousness babbly crap. Then my computer screen started blanking out. It's not possible to write when you can't open the thing more than 20 degrees or so.

So, off to beta it went. Haven't heard back from her yet. But tis done.

That isn't what wrong means

During my lunch break at work I use a news reader to browse articles, and I regularly tweet links to the more interesting ones. One such article I tweeted recently explained how a formerly notorious Holocaust denier had changed his name and hid out in California for about twenty years, being very active in a group called the Republican Party Animals...
