Iris didn't go out as much as she used to. For one, all of the changes that came with President Shaw's "office term" (which was really just a polite term for facist regime) meant that it was difficult to carry on any sort business, if not nigh impossible. Many humans had gone into hiding if they hadn't been outright captured. In fact, that was what had necessitated Iris being out on her own to stock up on food supplies, transacting at downright exorbitant prices with individuals of questionable character.
In a civilized world, she'd be able to send hired help to the grocery store to run these kinds of errands without concern that they would be accosted, or worse, abducted. Unfortunately, the world wasn't a very civilized place of late. In fact, she already knew she was going to run into trouble. Right on time, a pair of scruffy men who were obviously down on their luck and willing to fight tooth and nail to take what they needed approached.
"All right lady," they said, brandishing large knives. "Hand over all your money, and don't even try telling us you don't have any."
"Hand over your jewelry, too. And those shoes. They look expensive."
If it wasn't for the fact that Iris knew this would turn out fine for her in the end, she would have been terrified. As it was, she was tightly controlled, and just had to stall for just a little bit longer.
"Gentlemen...you're making a big mistake," she said, speaking loudly and clearly to draw attention to them. "Let's talk this over. I'm sure you're both very nice people who wouldn't want to hurt someone who's done nothing to you."
"Maybe before, but thanks to Shaw..." the first man spat. "Hand over the goods, lady, or we'll carve you up like a pumpkin! Do not test me!" he warned.
"Very well," replied Iris, knowing that her rescuer was nearby. "But I did tell you that you were making a big mistake, yes?"
