Cleaning up a mess
Caitlin wriggled under the machine and looked up. "How in the bloody hell did she get dirt in here? Did she take it out on a mission?" she asked before she peeked out at Doctor McLaclan.
The other scientist muttered under his breath and tugged at his lab coat. "I believe she did, Doctor Beckett," he quietly murmured before taking a step back.
With a long sigh, Caitlin stared at all the mud jammed into the DNA tester. If she ever saw Jennifer Keller again, she was going to punch her in the face. Maybe she was a good medical doctor but she didn't know the first thing about medical research and had left a lot of the equipment in poor condition. And ever since Atlantis came back to Earth, Caitlin had been working to get the equipment in her lab running again. She didn't care if she had been sent back to Earth a year before Atlantis returned. She had worked hard on getting that lab running so in her mind it would always be hers.
"Here goes nothing," she said to herself.
She knocked on the side of the small compartment and quickly covered her eyes and mouth as dirt and gunk poured out. Coughing a little, she opened her eyes to see if it had worked. Luckily, it looked like it had. She pushed herself from under the machine and stood up. After giving the other scientist a look, Caitlin pressed the button and let out a sigh of relief when the machine came to life. "That's it. The medical lab is finally running again," she said.
"Doctor Beckett? You have dirt on your--."
"Really? Imagine that! I just had dirt pour out on me and I have dirt on me! Wow," Caitlin said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. She didn't mean to be cranky but McLachlan had a lot of stupid moments. "Clean up the dirt and move the machine. I'll tell Doctor Carter and Colonel Sheppard the lab is ready."
Going to her office, Caitlin sat down at her desk and started to root around for a towel or something. When she couldn't find one, she sighed in frustration before looking down at her desk. Her frustrations seemed to melt away when she saw the picture of her and her husband, Carson. Caitlin knew all she had to do was go down the hall to see him but both of them had been so busy getting the city ready to take back to Pegasus that seeing each other came second.
But Caitlin knew neither of them would trade it for the world. When the IOA had sent them back to the SGC to work, it had been hard on the both of them. Atlantis had been their home for over four years and they had done so many amazing things there - including falling in love with each other. To have that stripped away was difficult so when Carson was asked to come back after Atlantis' return, Caitlin was overjoyed when she was asked to help, too.
"Screw this," she said to herself as she stood from her desk. She was finished with the lab and she wanted to spend a quiet evening with her husband. Even if it meant sitting in medical and watching him work.
Going down the hall, Caitlin stepped into medical and saw Carson was in his office. She walked in and held out her arms. "I had to remove dirt from the DNA machine, which made me really cranky. Think I may need a hug from my favorite guy," she said.
