In the fair and prosperous nation of Genosha, the kingdom has come together to celebrate the birth of the Princess Lorna, youngest daughter to his majesty, King Magnus. [Hail to the infant princess] But all is not as joyous as it seems, for the Queen has died in childbirth. The King calls his children, the Crown Prince Pietro and his twin sister, the Princess Wanda to the throne room to tell them their mother is dead. [Joyful Misery]
The King exits to make arrangements, and the young royals are left together. They try to comfort one another, both distraught by the loss of their mother and unable to reconcile the connection with the happiness of having a newborn sister. [I’m Scared] Eventually they decide that no matter what, they will always have one another. They swear to be together always no matter the circumstance. [Bound to you]
Years later, the kingdom is flourishing and King Magnus is seeking the perfect mates for his oldest children. [The way it begins] The Princess Wanda’s beauty is well renowned and many suitors come in the hopes of winning her hand. But the Princess wishes to fall in love and refuses them. [Oh fair one/Maiden for love] King Magnus looks to the Prince for help, but the Crown Prince sides with his sister. [Assist Me/Her heart is wise] Enraged, King Magnus orders that they will both marry whomever he chooses. [You shall]
In the garden, Princess Lorna peers over the balcony railing and tells her sister of all the new suitors arriving. The Princess Wanda does not wish to talk of marriage and instead tells her sister a story of a Princess who fell in love with her bodyguard. The pair of lovers know they cannot be and so they run away together. [In the stories of old] Princess Lorna disagrees with the story’s ending and asks her brother his opinion as he arrives. Prince Pietro, in continued defiance of his father, tells the young Princess that all that should matter is love. He makes her promise that she will remember what he says and do as they hope to be able to. [Love with your heart]
Princess Lorna hurries off, leaving the twins alone to speak in the garden, where Prince Pietro informs Princess Wanda of their father’s decision. The Princess fears a future without love but her brother promises her she will have what she desires, if he alone must fight for it. [My Beloved] Believing in her brother, the Princess is calmed and the pair make their way to prepare for the ball being held to welcome the Princess’ suitors.
At the ball, the atmosphere is rocky, but the royal family present a united front. [Always Dignity] The people of Genosha are excited at the prospect of a royal wedding, and King Magnus announces at dinner that the Princess Wanda will marry the Wakandan Prince whom she has never met. [Royal Wedding/For Genosha] Furious, Prince Pietro confronts his father, and King Magnus orders him away on pain of banishment. [No more, yet no less] Princess Wanda meets the Wakandan Prince as her brother leaves. [Fair Beauty/This I know]
Later that evening, the Prince steals into the Princess’ bedroom and convinces her to run away with him. [Come away/Anywhere you Lead] While the Prince is arranging the getaway, the Princess hastens to their sister’s room and wakes her. Princess Lorna is shocked to find that her siblings are running away, but doesn’t want to go with them. [Who will care for Papa] She stays but wishes them well and promises never to tell their father what she knows. The Princesses embrace and say goodbye. [I wish you well] Prince Pietro comes for his twin and taking his hand, the twins disappear into the night.
Act 2
Functionally exiled, the royal twins know there are very few places they can go to disappear. Prince Pietro suggests they go South, while Princess Wanda believes they should go West. They decide to go Southwest and as they travel, they meet a variety of people they otherwise never would have known. [The World is so vast]
In Genosha, King Magnus is informed of the twins’ departure and sends guards after them to retrieve them. [Defiance] Princess Lorna attempts to intercede but the King believes she has chosen the path of her siblings and punishes her. [So alike] The Princess Lorna decides that if she is to be a prisoner, made guilty by association, then she will just have to commit the crime. [So shall it be] She begins a secret correspondence with her siblings.
The Royal Guard track down the Prince and Princess and try to return them to Genosha. [Duty bound in blood] But the twin royals have taken a liking to their new life and refuse to leave the town in which they have been assisting. [Servitude is of the heart] The guards differ in their opinions on what to do and there is a fight. [By the King’s command/Treason] When the victors - who feel they should simply remain with the Prince and Princess - run off the others, they rush to secure the Prince and Princess. But it is too late. [To their side]
The King has been made aware and decrees that the Prince and Princess have five years of freedom in which to do as they choose before they must return and submit to his will. Surprised, the twins are reinstated and once again in their father’s good graces. [For all the world] As they travel the world, assisting those in need, the rift with their father slowly mends. [Love is not always beautiful, but it is always true] The years go by, but they are always in constant contact with their family. [Brother Dear, Darling Sister/Father though we leave you]
As their time draws to a close, the Prince and Princess make ready to return home. As they board their ship, however, there is an urgent message. Their homeland has come under attack by a strange illness. Many are sick and dying. [Your highness, please, a moment] The Prince and Princess decide they will return home regardless, but are once again interrupted. [This just in] They are needed elsewhere. The royal twins discuss what to do. [If Mama were here] They decide there is plenty of time and divert their ship to assist, before making way to Genosha. They board in a hurry and promise to return one day, sailing off into the sunrise. [No time to lose/We are with you/Genosha]
Act 3
As the plague continues to ravage the Genoshan people King Magneto chooses to close the borders to protect the world’s mutant population. [The hardest things in life/What we must do] In an act of solidarity, the United Nations sends a fleet to barricade Genosha. [We will go.] Its sole purpose to keep anyone from entering or exiting the quarantined country. As the blockade finalizes, the ships crews bear witness to the mourning of a nation as Princess Lorna dies. [All hail the infant princess reprise.]
Across the sea, the Twin royals learn of their sister’s death and decide if they are to die, they will return home and all die together; even if it means breaking their father’s law. [Another Day/We Three/Homeward Bound Am I] As the ship grows nearer, members of the crew clash with the royal guard over whether going home is wise. [To the end/Majesty and Duty] In an effort to calm them, the Crown Prince orders the captain to anchor and informs everyone they will not travel further until all are agreed. [Together, Genoshans]
After a rousing speech, the Prince selflessly jumps from the deck and runs ahead to see if there is anything that can be done. Princess Wanda wakes from a haunting dream and is informed of her brother’s departure. [But a Dream/Out of Reach] Devastated, the Princess sends her attendents away and locks herself up in her room, refusing any rest, food or company until her brother is returned. Alone, she begins to fear for his life and as time goes by, works herself into a hysterical breakdown. [Pietro] Fearing for her brother, the Princess teleports away to Genosha, where she is confronted by the horrifying realization that everyone is dead. She rushes to the throne room where she finds her father. King Magneto is dressed in his best, and seated upon his throne, awaiting death. The Princess begs her father to come away with her, where he can be nursed back to health, but he refuses to leave. [My People/A King must always be a King].
King Magneto urges his daughter to return to her brother and reminisces about the days when they were young and life was promising. [In Springtime] He dies with one final decree: That none shall ever set foot upon Genosha’s shores lest they be mutant and free.
Distraught, the Princess abides by her father’s last wish and returns to her ship, knowing she can no longer have contact with another soul, for she is most likely contaminated. [Yes, Papa/Alone I go] Upon arrival, she is faced with her brother who has returned to find her missing and demands she open the door. Princess Wanda refuses, terrified of infecting him. The twin royals argue through the door, both agonized by the separation and the situation they now find themselves in. [Let me in] Frustrated, the Prince orders everyone away and breaks down the door. The Princess runs to the corner weeping and begs him to go. He refuses, instead, crossing the room and embracing her. He reminds her that they were meant to be together and they reconcile, accepting their fate. [Where you go, so I go/Together Forever]
Against the Prince’s orders, some attendants, guards and crewmen return to the ship to continue their service of the royal house. [The chosen few, proud are we] The ship sails on, sworn not to stop at any port so that no more will be infected. [To serve, to serve/On we go]
As the weeks pass, people begin to grow ill and die. Aboard the ship, the united group care for one another regardless of station. [United] Eventually, the Princess falls ill. The Prince cares for her, but soon she lays dying. She pleads with him not to be foolish as she was, and remain on the ship. He promises he will never leave her side. The sun set finds the twins saying goodbye. The Princess Wanda thanks her brother for all he has done for her and apologizes for all she has done to wrong him. The Prince struggles with accepting her goodbye, informing her that she has always been the reason he lived. [The Twins’ Farewell] Absolving one another of all their sins and recognizing the strength of their love for one another, the Princess Wanda passes away in the arms of her brother.
Crown Prince Pietro finds he is the King of a nation of dead, adrift at sea on a dying ship without the comfort of his beloved sister. He laments the choices that have lead him to where he is. [A moonless night, a sunless day] In the world beyond, the plague has taken countless lives, decimating the mutant population. Alone, with his sister’s body, King Pietro despairs; calling after her. He promises her that she may go ahead, but she will not be alone. [How I loved you/Await me now] With a kiss, he gathers his sister’s body and exits; intent to finally give her all that he had promised.
