Marlene McKinnon ([info]pureclover) wrote in [info]asphodel,

Who: Marlene and Benjy
Where: Saint Mungos
When: Wednesday afternoon
Status: Incomplete
Rating: TBD

Marlene hated hospitals. It was not just the hospital atmosphere either, but the fact that she was not allowed to do anything herself, at all. In recent years she had become fiercely independent and being doted upon by healers specifically threatened to do so by her ever loving family grated on her nerves. She was fine, she had not been hit by anything as nasty as Fenwick had been. Still Nadine had been there almost every day to dote on her and just chat about whatever came into her mind. Really, she loved her sister, she was her idol in every way, but Marlene wanted out of the room.

They had started letting her roam around the hospital about, though she was not formally released yet. She used this to be able to visit Fenwick in his ward. While the woman at front, she could not be bothered with remembering her name, had originally not wanted to let her in, no one told a McKinnon no. So soon enough she had been let in to visit him and check up on how he was doing. More than anything she felt obligated. He had taken a hit for her, a possibly deadly one. That was something no one had ever done for her and not something she would have ever expected anyone to do, ever, for anyone.

It was an action that left her more confused than anything and she was really not sure what to do about that. He had effectually saved her life, what did one do with something like that? One could not just say thank you and be done with it. She owed him and she was not sure what. It was not exactly something she could pay back really. Plus, he was pretty cute. Not that she would admit that aloud, but he was. Nadine would have probably thought the same thing, and her sister was as shallow as it got when it came to looks.

She was going to be released soon, she knew that, but not today. So she wandered down to his ward and went up to the woman, who knew better than to argue with her by now. The woman mentioned something about him sleeping, but she waved her off and simply walked past to the room she knew he was tucked away in. Though the girl was right, he was sleeping. That meant there really was not a point for her to be visiting, but it did beat just sitting around in her room and doing nothing. So she walked over and sat next to his bed, twiddling her thumbs there instead of back at her wing.

He really was cute when he slept, especially since he wasn’t talking. Talking was not his strong suit really, he was a bit of a moron. But he was a moron who saved her life, so that put him in a slightly different light. And really she should not stay all that long. Sighing softly she got up and looked back at him. Biting her lip slightly, she leaned over and kissed him softly on the forehead before straightening up and starting to head for the door.

After Alice had visited him earlier in the day, he was admittedly tired, something that puzzled and baffled him completely since it took a helluva lot to make him sleep in the middle of the day. Of course, the potions the Healers were giving him were probably also helping the exhaustion alone, but sleeping was definitely better than counting the bricks around the perimeter of his room and it was better than reading the charm book Alice had brought him. So, several hours before, with the insistence of one of the Healers, he let himself just fall asleep.

He didn't hear her come in and he wasn't even aware that she had sat next to his bed when she did. But he felt the pressure against his forehead and stirred as she backed away, his brow frowning and his eyes opening. "Mum?" he called groggily as his eyes slowly focused themselves. "Oh - McKinnon, what're you doing here?" he asked rather stupidly as the realisation that she had been the one in there and that she had kissed him. The hell?

As soon as she heard his voice she froze. Oh shite, this wasn't good at all. He was messing with her exit plan, the inconsiderate idiot. Brushing a bit of hair behind her shoulder, she turned around and looked at him, trying very hard and for the most part succeeding in keeping her cheeks from flushing red. "What else would I be doing here, I was making sure you hadn't off and died on me. Cause you would be that inconsiderate, you know."

Folding her arms she tilted her head back and looked at him oddly. "And did you just call me Mum? I've seen your mother, I don't look anything like her at all." Damnit, he was supposed to be still sleeping. Why did have have to go and wake up when she did something stupid? That was the last time she listened to that annoying little voice in the back of her head.

Giving a yawn and pushing himself up so that he could see her, he groaned. Her voice was not a voice he wanted to hear first thing after waking up - she always seemed to nag him and after Alice had nagged his ears off enough earlier, he wasn't in the mood to hear it from someone else. "You can't get rid of me that easily," he muttered, reaching up and rubbing at his left eye.

"Mum's the only one who does that," he said simply and with a shrug of the shoulders. "And I don't think the healers in this ward are brazen enough to kiss a patient." He kept his eyes level with hers, trying to figure out just what the hell she had been doing by doing -- that. They hated each other, or at least that's what he thought and her actions seemed to validate that. He didn't hate her nearly as much when he met her and he would admit that she was attractive enough, but she drove him bloody insane.

"If I was trying to get rid of you, you'd already be gotten rid of." she said petulantly. This worked so much better off in those shows she watched on the telly at Harry's house. Leave it to Fenwick to not listen to what the telly said would happen. Had to go waking up and bloody things like that. And saving her life, and looking rather cute when he rubbed his eyes.

In a moment her eyes went wide and her cheeks flushed as red as was possible as a look of horror spread over her face. "I don't know what you're talking about." she said quickly, turning around. "You're probably delusional, head trauma or something like that. Probably going to end up dead from it, making up things like that!"

He figured she would say something along those lines. Always the petulant one and pretending she was bigger and badder than everyone else. He let it slip though, noting that she had said if she wanted to get rid of him, she would have already done it. "If, eh?" he quipped with a chuckle to himself. "I feel special."

And then he laughed, holding onto his stomach as she blushed profusely. "I was hit in the stomach, woman, not the bloody head," he corrected with a roll of his eyes. This was priceless. He wished he had a way of recoding this so that he could play the moment back again and again in the future.

The laughing just caused her to turn even more red. But it also caused her to turn around and go back over to him. "Stop that! Stop laughing at me!" she scolded, hitting his chest lightly. "I said stop it!" she managed to keep her voice from getting to loud or shrill, but it was still upsetting. She was not used to people laughing anymore really, let alone laughing at her, that was just unheard of.

"You don't need to be hit in the head, it's already scrambled up enough." she said with a grumble. "And don't woman me, I have a bloody name you know. And my parents were more creative than to just call me 'woman', thank you very much."

Benjy honestly couldn't help but laugh, especially since she was getting so flustered over something so small. He loved it, he bloody well loved it and couldn't wait to tell someone that he had embarrassed the shite out of Marlene McKinnon. Too bad he didn't have pictures, no one else would probably believe him.

"Ow fuck!" he hissed when she hit him dangerously close to where he was hurt (the laughing hadn't helped either, but it was easier to ignore than someone trying to kill him). He rubbed his chest and his stomach, the latter throbbing slightly from all the excitement, and huffed at her. "Now you're trying to bloody kill me, woman. That fucking hurt hurt."

If she ever heard of him telling anyone, she might just have to kill him. In fact she was pretty sure that it was grounds for killing him if she ever got caught, which she wouldn't. No one would ever find him, the cheeky bastard. She could probably just smother him right now, but then that annoying bint at the front of the wing knew she was in here.

"That's what you get for being an arse!" she snapped, still flushed but slightly less so from embarrassment and more from anger at being embarrassed. "Why'd I have to get stuck being saved by the moron. Could have been protected by someone who wasn't trying to make me miserable."

Leaning back against the pillows, Benjy eyed her carefully. She was incensed and he was ready to fight back if she started hitting at him or throwing hexes his way. He didn't doubt that she would, especially with him embarrassing her as much as he did by taking the mickey.

"Next time I'll leave you to someone like Pettigrew to save your arse then and we'll see how grateful you are then," he muttered, rubbing his forehead. Sure, he saved her, but he didn't see it as a big deal. While she probably wouldn't lay her life on the line for him, training to be an auror was teaching him to do that for everyone he went on missions with. "What was I supposed to do, let the bastard throw the fucking hex at you and leave you for dead?" he asked finally, giving her a serious look.

"No one's sending me on a mission with Pettigrew, I'd refuse to go!" she said, wrinkling her face up in disgust. Honesty, she could handle a lot of things, but not that. He was so... just ugh. Plus he probably wouldn't be any use at all in a fight, which would be stupid, really, because she was not the strongest fighter around either. At least she knew that.

Of course he wouldn't see it as a big idea. Where she came from people did not do things like that. It was everyone out for themselves, and she was really rather good at that. In fact she was exemplary at it. Biting her lip, she sat down and shook her head. "I don't know, that's what a lot of people would have done, really. It's stupid to take a hex for someone else, you could have gotten your stupid self killed."

Benjy didn't like the idea of her or anyone else going out on missions with Peter Pettigrew either. Sure, Pettigrew had his own merits, slim as they may be, but he wasn't exactly the best fighter around and didn't have much of a backbone either. "I was being sarcastic about Pettigrew?"

The truth of the matter was that not many people would have done what he did. It was just instinct. His dad had brought him up to believe that the man always protected the woman, regardless if they hated each other, loved each other, or whatever; it was their responsibility to make sure nothing happened to them. "I'd apologise, but I'm not really sorry for doing it." The threat of dying never occurred to him and it still didn't faze him. "I couldn't just leave you there."

"You better have been." she grumbled under her breath. She did not like Pettigrew. He was slimy and just generally gross. And honestly in general she really did not like Gryffindors, it was just she did not have much of a choice nowadays given her choice of alliances. It sort of cut out everyone that she had liked previously. Though Pettigrew did not even really seem much like the other Gryffindors anyway.

Sighing, she sat down in the seat next to his bed, looking at her hands. She fiddled with her fingers as something to do. "I don't think you should feel sorry, unless you hate me that much." she said softly, still a bit petulantly. Really she was not sure what to do now, this all made her feel very unsure of herself and that was not something that she liked feeling.

"You better have been," he mocked, sending his voice up an octave. "Of course I bloody was. Pettigrew can't even hold a wand steady when someone's throwing hexes at him." Merlin she was touchy sometimes. Annoying, too. But that didn't mean he wasn't intrigued by the small amount of vulnerability she was showing. Intrigued, but also confused. Furrowing his brows, he watched her fiddle with her fingers, having never actually seen her so unsure of herself; she always had an aura of confidence and a trace of arrogance surrounding her.

"I never said I hated you," he repeated from a journal conversation that had had a few weeks ago. "And is it safe to say I'm not hated earlier or was that kiss of yours poisonous and I just haven't felt the effects yet?

"Which is exactly why you better have been joking. Stressful situations are bad enough without having to worry that you might get hexed by a jumpy teammate." The idea of premature spells struck her as a bit funny, but she was not exactly in a funny mood right now. It was all his fault too, the bastard.

"Would you stop bringing that up!" she almost squeaked. "You were supposed to be asleep! But nooo, had to go and wake up. No consideration for others, none at all. Horrible manners."

Forgetting about the whole conversation about Pettigrew, Benjy gave Marlene a look, one that showed just how batty and ridiculous he thought she was being. "What the hell else was I supposed to do when someone's macking on me? Lay there and pretend it's not happening, that it's all just a wet dream?" he asked incredulously. Were her potions too strong for her or was she the one that had been knocked in the head a few times too many? "Now that's horrible manners right there and would likely get the shite smacked out of me were it anyone but you," he said, waving his hand at her.

"I was not macking on you!" she said incredulously, looking at him, rather offended in fact. "It wasn't anything of the sort. It was innocent and all that and I don't know why I did it, but since you obviously got the wrong idea in your bloody head, I'll be glad to not do in again." She folded her arms and sulked a bit petulantly. Honestly, she'd never heard a complaint from boys she had actually 'macked' on.

Frowning, she refused to look at him, instead looking over towards the doorway. "And you should stop getting so upset, or they'll decide you're hysterical and dope you up with potions and keep you here even longer."

Okay, so perhaps she wasn't macking, that much he was willing to admit. It still didn't answer just exactly why she had done it in the first place, and claiming that she didn't even know herself wasn't a good enough reason for him. So he still gave her a disbelieving look, but did calm down as she suggested. The Healers really would start doping him up if he started acting too excited for his own good.

"I'm calm," he muttered, glancing out the door to make sure they weren't scoping his room out and waiting for the opportune moment to issue new potions to him.

Innocent was one to describe the kiss and accepted that for what it was, but there had to have been an underlying reason for it. Perhaps she was just trying to thank him for taking the hex for her while she was down? Looking at her profile, he considered that possibility. He was plausible and it did kind of make sense, but if she hated him then why even bother. "You don't hate me as much as you used to, do you?" he asked in a moment of clarity, sounding much more mature than he usually did and marginally shocking himself because of it. Since when was he the perceptive one? "Hell if I knew that all I had to do was take a few hexes for you to get off my arse about things and calling me names all the time, I would have done it sooner."

Marlene sat in the chair, sulking. This had gotten a bit out of hand and her leg was starting to hurt a bit. She had been hoping that her leg had been done and over with, but it seemed like it was not quite done yet. Though at the moment she was not sure if she was going to tell the healers or not. Her urge to get out of the hospital was almost strong enough to ignore pain if it meant getting out of this place faster.

"Just because I don't hate you doesn't mean I don't still think you're an idiot." she grumbled, not about to give up her sulk. He had embarrassed her and she did not take kindly to that. Really she was not even sure how to deal with it. She glared at him at the second part. "Don't say things like that!"

"And just because I don't hate you doesn't mean you don't drive me fucking insane with all your nagging," he grumbled right back at her, in the exact same tone she had said it to him. So she didn't hate him - surprise there. Actually, a really big surprise since she had never given any indication that she could stand him just a bit.

Rolling his eyes when she hissed at him not to say thanks, he waved a dismissive hand in front of him. "I was just making a bloody joke," he said, shaking his head. "No need to get even more uptight about everything."

"You only say it's nagging because you know I'm right." she replied, huffing slightly. Merlin more than anything she wanted a cigarette right now. She was barely allowed to have them since she had gotten here, since either her sister or the healers prevented her from being able to. The forced separation was causing her to get just a little irritable. Just a tiny bit, really.

Marlene shook her head at that. "It wasn't funny. And I'm not uptight." she grumbled, chewing her lip as she felt the intense craving for a cigarette.

Benjy didn't smoke, but dealing with Marlene McKinnon could almost bring him to having one or five. Sure, he didn't hate her and was a bit attracted to her (not that he would ever admit that aloud), but sometimes she grated on his nerves more than anyone he had ever know. And he had known a lot of people in his lifetime who drove him up a bloody wall. "That's what all you women say when we say you're nagging," he mused.

This time, he resisted the urge to roll her eyes and rolled on his side to reach onto the table next to his bed for a piece of the chocolate Alice had brought him earlier that day. "Want one?" he asked and threw one onto her lap anyway. "You are uptight," he observed. "Very uptight. Don't you ever just have fun and do anything but snap at us poor blokes all the time about being morons?"

"No wonder you don't have a girlfriend, talking about 'all you women' like that." she muttered under her breath. Flipping her hair a bit to keep it out of her eyes her foot began to twitch a little. Merlin, she really needed a cigarette, this was not fair at all. He was the most insufferable person she had ever met, and she grew up with purebloods that possibly were considered the most annoying people on the planet.

She jumped when something hit her. "You're chucking chocolate at me now?" she huffed, but still picked it up and broke a bit off, popping it into her mouth. Not a cigarette, but it would do. "I'm plenty of fun. You just don't get to see how much fun I am cause you'd rather make fun of me instead of having fun with me."

"Ever think I didn't want a girlfriend?" he countered with a challenging look. "It's much easier having no strings attached so that she's not attached to my hip all the bloody time. And one's too complicated and would interfere with everything." His philosophy was that he had to finish training to be an Auror and actually be awarded the certificate before he would settle with a steady girlfriend. He also wanted to make sure the war was over too before even thinking about those sorts of things.

"You're welcome," he said, gesturing towards the chocolate he had given her. At least she didn't toss it back, that would have been insulting. "I didn't know having fun with you was an option for me. What with me being a moron and all. And I don't make fun of you."

"Right, right." she said in a very dis interested manner. "Or maybe you like boys instead. That's always possible." She was yanking his chain right now, but she was fairly sure it would piss him off and for some reason, she felt the urge to do that right now. Not that pissing him off was all that hard for her, it seemed easier than breathing some days.

Ignoring the 'you're welcome', she popped another bit of it into her mouth. It improved her mood a little bit. She was probably hungry actually. "Well you never bothered to find out, then, did you? And you do too, you were just doing it a second ago."

"Trust me, I prefer tits and a girl's arse over everything else," he countered, glaring at her for implying that he was a poof and liked men better than women. "Maybe your problem is that you're the one who prefers the same sex instead - I haven't ever seen you take any interest in men before." He knew that that was a low shot and regretted saying it the instant it was out of his mouth. "Sorry," he muttered, hating apologising, but he was definitely in the wrong there.

"I was mocking you, not making fun of you." There was a difference after all. "Though I never bothered to find out if you were fun or not because you always seem like you've got a big stick up your arse and you always let it known that you would rather be off with someone else than stuck in my company for longer than you have to."

While it was probably not the expected reaction, Marlene shook her head and laughed aloud at that. "Really? Well, you honestly never listened to anything coming out of Slytherin then, did you." Honestly, she had never had someone accuse her of that before. He obviously did not listen to anything that was said about her really. Not that it all was true, but there was a bit of it that was. The rest was just exaggerations and rumors.

"Ooo, now maybe think there was a reason for that?" she said, looking over at him. "Maybe think I would rather be with someone else. Unfortunately, someone else doesn't exist. Now those who didn't know I was with you lot probably do."

He gave her a dubious look. "Why would I ever listen to something coming out of Slytherin? Most of it was either about how much better you lot thought you were from the rest of the school or some ridiculous rumour or other. Neither of which I gave a shite about." And he didn't. There originally were rumours about a club forming itself under Dumbledore's nose who wanted to rid the school of muggleborns, but he, like many (Dumbledore included) had left it at that: rumours. Unfortunately, it had turned out to be anything but a rumour in the end.

"A reason for what?" he asked, a bit confused. "The only reason you give someone the time of day is because you want something out of them. The same goes with this." He gestured between the two of them. "You're only giving a rat's ass about me because there's no one else here to amuse yourself with. I'm just the, what is it - a consolation prize, right? Or maybe you're just being nice to me for a few days since I saved your arse back there." He wasn't sure why he was angry, but her last comment actually hit hard. No one else existed who she would rather be with so she was just settling for him.

Marlene looked at her nails for a moment. "Which is why you lot recruited me. I don't mind sifting through all the bullshit in that to find out what is actually happening." Gossip was important. Not because it was gossip, but because of the nugget of truth that it would hold. most of them refused to look for that, but Marlene was good at it. It was why she was going into law in the first place.

"Isn't that what everyone wants?" she asked, looking at him a bit annoyed. "You don't talk to anyone just to talk, it's to get something. You're no different from me. Just I admit it. And I talked to you before I landed you in the bloody hospital, so don't give me that crap." Her fingers twitched and she brought an air cigarette to her lips in irritation.

"I wasn't the one to recruit you," he pointed out, sitting up more to change positions. He was starting to get sore from sitting for too long and grimaced slightly as he moved, but that was the only indication he gave that he was hurting. "Dumbledore did, we weren't sure of your allegiance at first, remember? Guess you feel happy about proving us all wrong."

Frowning slightly, he shook his head. "I talk to people just to bloody talk. I don't have some kind of... hidden agenda or whatever the hell you want to call it. You, even from the first time you talked to me, all you wanted to figure out was just how many of us thought you were going to turn spy for the other team. You want something out of the conversation, maybe even this one for all I bloody know, but fucking hell, woman -" He gave an agitated huff. "You annoy the shite out of me, all right? The pure living shite, but it's fucking better than the shite I get out of most everyone else. At least it's a bloody challenge and I don't get bored easily."

"I didn't mean you by you." she said with a roll of her eyes. "I meant you as in the Order. And why do you think I'm happy about it? None of the rest of you ever had to prove anything." Sure she was from Slytherin, from one of the privileged families, but it took all types really. No one was going to win a war with a bunch of Gryffindors. They never thought things out properly, put themselves in risky situations that they ought not to.

Marlene shrugged and leaned back in her chair. He would not understand. Just talking to people was a way of seeking out connections, that was what he wanted, even if he did not know it. Nothing was ever done unless there was something to gain from it, not in her eyes. "And I had good reason to want to find that out too, didn't I?" she asked. "But thanks oh so much for not thinking I'm boring."
