Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Betty Braithwaite and Sirius Black
What: The Daily Prophet's office party, delight
When: 26 may
Where: The Daily Prophet
Rating: TBD

Parties had never been much of her kind of thing, really. The entire reason she was here is because she was dying to know if her date was going to stir up anything interesting with her coworkers. If what he said was to be believed he knew an awful lot about what was going on, things that most reporters would salivate over if they could actually get in deep enough for the information. On the other hand he knew things that would get a lot of people in a tizzy if he brought them up.

While in her normal state she might find this fact to be worrisome, but as it happened the punch was especially well made tonight and Betty was in a rather tipsy mood. Which roughly translated to she could not really be bothered if someone got a little tiffed at her choice in date. In fact it was a pleasant way to stay distracted while someone from some department rambled on about how great the editor was for some award thing. "It's not like you guys have any competition." she thought a bit sardonically.

Filling her cup back up, she looked around to see where her date was exactly. He was not anywhere near Rita Skeeter, which was good. If he managed to get her angry then Betty could kiss her job goodbye. Hopefully they would not have to stay too much longer. An office party was hardly the most riveting event in the world to be at. Though if Hodgens drunk anymore there might be some pretty interesting pictures to be taken.

Sirius had wandered off to the loo several minutes before hand, not really because he needed it, but because it gave him a good chance to check out some of the people milling around without looking entirely suspicious. He knew that when they'd first arrived, several people stared openly, as if to silently disapprove of him. He was dressed like them, he was acting like them, but they were obviously under the impression that he was still an utter hellion. He simply rolled his eyes.

After making a round about the room and disappearing a few minutes to seem as though he'd really gone to the loo, he returned and made his way over to Betty. Absently, he grabbed another cup of the delightful punch. He was beginning to feel the effects of it as well, but his tolerance was certainly higher than his dates. He gave her a smile, "Very interesting crowd. They're not at all the pompous gits I thought they would be," his tone held a bit of sarcasm as he heard someone giving a speech to anyone that would listen about how marvelous their award winning article had been, "I believe you're the only exception I've seen." He gave her a smile. In all honesty, he liked her more than he should.

Thankfully, no one was in the vicinity to hear his remarks. He knew if they were, it couldn't mean good things for Betty's standing in her job. He didn't want to get her into trouble, though something a bit more exciting would be nice. Everyone just stood around talking about themselves, and it made for a dull event.

There had not just been silent disapproval. While most were classy enough to wait until he was gone, she had heard several questionings of her logic, both to her face and just within her range of hearing. It had caused quite the stir among her coworkers. It was certainly not just his school actions speaking of him. He had made quite a name for himself after all speaking out against certain people.

"Interesting is a word for it." she said into her cup as she took a sip. "You're only really hearing the big wigs right now. People like me are generally quiet and don't stay around very long." She was a bit tickled at the compliment though and hid her smile with yet another sip of her drink. Plus it would do no good for her to be over heard either. Coming from him was one thing, but she was the actual employee there.

In truth she was having more fun around him than she was really willing to admit. While it might just be the alcohol, it was still fun and she had not really gotten to have much of that lately. It was a nice change of pace.

Sirius grinned at her, "Well, if they've got big wigs, that would be something to boast about," Sirius said teasingly, knowing exactly what she meant but twisting her words. He could tell she was pleased, despite that she was trying to hide it. He was fairly perceptive when he wanted to be, and quite frankly, he was pleased just to be there with her.

He took another drink as he glanced around the room. He recognised Rita Skeeter, and he knew tere was no way in hell he woud want to speak to her. He also recalled a few more faces, but not many of the names. He was surprised that there seemed to be such a buzz about him being there. It was more attention than he'd bargained for.

"Honestly, I'm not that much of an interesting topic, am I?" he asked Betty as two nearby women pointed undiscreetly and whispered. He gave them a sharp glance and a smirk to which their eyes widened and the chatter picked up, "You'd think they'd find something better to gossip about."

"Oh, you mean you don't hear them boasting already?" she teased lightly, shaking her head in amusement. She did not really have friends at the Prophet, so it was not often that she got to talk about the unpleasant parts of the job. It was a bit relieving to be able to actually for once, especially right by the people who frustrated her.

She had been keeping an eye on Skeeter most of the night, ready to barge in if he did end up in contact with the older woman. While she did not always follow the complete truth, Betty had to admire her skill to speak to people. That woman had a finger on the pulse of the wizarding world, she could change someone's fortune in an instant.

While she could not help the smile that came out, she did hold out a giggle, though the alcohol was making her rather prone to it. "Well you're certainly more interesting than most of the men here. Plus I'd warrant that you're a tad bit more attractive on top of that. Though they're probably making comments on my blood status as well as yours, considering."

Sirius scoffed slightly, "Their bombastic approach to everything is pretty hard to miss. Its a wonder they can make it through the doorways. Their heads have surely inflated larger than the width," he gave her a cheeky smile. Several times, the same thing had been said about him at school, but he'd never really thought so highly of himself. He was confident, that was for sure, but his arrogance was mostly for show, it was expected of him, and peer pressure is not any easy thing to resist.

If he were to come in contact with Skeeter, he was sure that given she said the right thing, some rather colourful words would be thrown around, ones that could possibly be fatal for Betty's position in the Prophet, and he'd rather not let that happen. To him, she was nothing but a parasite, twisting people's words and wrecking lives.

Sirius raised one eyebrow at the mention of being more attractive than most of the other men, "Just a 'tad'? I thought it was more. You know, I'm extremely handsome and debonair. If everyone is going to talk about how wonderful they are, shouldn't we do the same?" he asked her with a smirk, however, the comment on blood status had his lips turning down into a frown, "In my opinion, blood status doesn't matter. Purity isn't what matters, its the person themselves." He shook his head slightly. The war made him sick.

Ginning, she leaned slightly against the wall behind her. "Bet it you went after some of them with a pin, you could pop them. Probably be quite a sight really." Betty had enough of a cheeky air about her to survive in a place like this, but that did not mean that she particularly liked it. In fact on more than one occasion she had wondered about going over to the muggle papers for work, only to rationalize out that she could never lie that much.

Skeeter and Sirius would be a completely explosive combination. They certainly were not very compatible elements. So avoiding her would be the course of the evening really, because she knew that Rita would love to get some quote from Sirius that she could twist to her own fancy. And the people of Britain would believe her too.

Betty could not help but roll her eyes, even while she had a smile. "I think I'll stick with a tad, don't need to give you a bigger head either." Sipping her drink she just shrugged "It's true though. You made a very famous and public statement about your views, and now you're out with a known muggleborn. I'm almost looking forward to what they'll say about this."

He gave a light chuckle as he leaned against the wall beside her, "I bet I could. I wonder if they'd to the whole, whistling thing as they lost all their air or if it would just be one big bang," he joked. There was something about Betty that he found utterly intriguing. He couldn't seem to place precisely what it was, but she could be passionate about her cause and stubborn as a mule, or like now, relaxed and happy. She had him waiting to see what would happen next.

Being in a room full or reporters almost made him a bit nervous, but seeing as he didn't plan to give them anything exceptional to write about, he wasn't overly worried. He was just going to go with the flow of what was happening and hope someone didn't cross his path the wrong direction.

He smirked, "My head isn't big. Its average, thank you very much," it pleased him to see her smiling, "Well, the pureblood supremacists will probably continue to say that I'm a blood traitor, and the rest will say I'm treading on thin ice and if I don't watch my moves, ol' Moldy Shorts will be out for me next. I've heard it before, I'll hear it again," he nonchalantly replied. At this point, what everyone viewed him as wasn't much of a concern to him.

Giggling, she looked over at the people that really were the most like what they were describing. "Oh I think it'd be a big bang, like if you stabbed a balloon. Though depending on how you did it you could get the whistling thing. Then you wouldn't get exploded bits all over the place. at least." Taking another sip, she smiled at the joy of just being able to talk like this.

"Oh you're not thinking creatively enough." she teased, grinning into her cup. "They'll come up with something much more tabloid about it. Be a completely sordid affair. Probably with an illegitimate halfblood child with froggy toes to tie it off."

The Prophet was run very much like the muggle tabloids, she thought when she was tipsy enough to not rationalize that it was a serious news institution. Probably because there were not any real wizarding tabs. "Just don't give anyone anything to work with, or there might be an article about it."

He nodded appreciatively, "I like the whistling sound. It seems more painful, slow and tormenting," he observed, he was quite liking this conversation. It was utterly silly, similar to how he talked with his friends, yet entirely different. This was Betty after all.

He laughed at her theory, "I wouldn't doubt it, actually. In fact, that poor illigitmate child probably has three eyes and a tail," he told her, rolling his eyes at the thought. The papers would do just about anything to ruin someone.

He grinned at her, noting that she seemed to be getting more tipsy by the sip, "I'll try to behave myself." He didn't want to be splashed all over the papers. It was best to try to stay out of the spotlight. That once had been a special occasion. Now, he knew if he kept speaking out, they would be knocking on his door and demanding his alligence to the other side.

Wrinkling her nose, she sighed softly. "No I don't think I'd like that. A pop would be over nice and quick. Not really too much into the painful bit. That's for the people I'm reporting on to do and get caught so that they can be stopped. Plus a popping noise would be much more fun after all."

"Oh don't tell me that!" she said with a laugh, hitting his arm playfully. "I'd be the one stuck carrying it, you know. And a tail would just be too much." Giggling, she thought of just what the artist on staff would make of that description. The art to that article would be just too much, more funny than horrifying.

"Do try." she said with a grin, looking out and around. "Wouldn't want to have to try to work you and me out of trouble you know. Be a lot of work I wouldn't fancy doing."

Sirius nodded slightly, "That's true. I just like to have the balloons slowly deflate. That is fun. People and their overly large egos, those probably would be best with a quick pop." He didn't think about the possible link to death, murder, when he said it, but he could see where she was coming from.

Sirius grinned widely, "Poor you, carrying our poor, deformed, illegitimate child. I wouldn't want to have to do that. I offer you my deepest sympathies." He had no idea what child bearing would be like, and he had no plans to ever find out in this life or any other.

"Getting us out of trouble would be a task, indeed. I don't imagine they'd let it go very easily. Memory modification would be involved," he said matter-of-factly. He was content with staying subdued. He didn't want trouble, not that night.

"Plus the sound would startle everyone else and it'd be pretty funny to watch them jump, don't you think?" She would really rather stay away from thoughtful subjects this evening. This was not an evening to think or argue, it was to have as much fun as possible at a particularly mind numbing event. That itself would be a task really.

Betty tried to shush him but was giggling a bit too much to do it effectively. "Don't say that too loudly, or they might just think you're actually saying something of substance!" Betty herself had no idea what childbearing would be like either, and she was in no hurry to find out, imaginary child or not.

"Memory modification can get messy too. Plus the legality of it all and all." she mentioned, shrugging slightly. The party really was rather boring. Definitely not one of those crazy office parties that one heard about by word of mouth. She could not imagine that he was having all that much fun here.

He smirked, "It would be better if that man jumped and his toupee fell off. Why doesn't he just use a hair restoration charm?" Sirius asked her quietly. He grabbed another drink. He was beginning to feel a bit tipsy as well. If nothing else, this night was good for free alcohol.

He laughed right along with her, realising that statements like that could get them into a lot of trouble, but hardly finding it within himself to care, "But you aren't and we aren't, obviously. If they thought so though, that would be an even bigger situation to talk ourselves out of," he whispered, chuckling still. That would be sticky, indeed. He could see no way they would actually believe them on that one.

He smirked at her, "If you and I are the only two that remembers, there's a loop hole in the legality issue. If you don't tell, and I don't tell, there's no chance we'll be caught," the suggestion made perfect sense to his hazed thoughts.

"Oh he did, he's allergic to them I think." she replied with a nod, trying to keep quiet. It was a bit hard though. Betty really was not one that was terribly used to drinking at all, normally she avoided it at all costs because of her work. But it was free, after all, and it was a party so she should have some fun.

Giggling, she put her hand over her mouth to try and quiet herself down. "Well I think it'd be rather obvious after I didn't start growing to the size of a house. Then again that could start even more rumors. Have to give them credit, they can create anything from nothing pretty much. Bit disgusting though."

Betty looked up at him a bit confused and then tried to work out that logic in her head. "It still wouldn't be legal though, not really. And we'd still know, so one of us could end up telling by accident."

Sirius laughed barkingly at the revelation, "Poor man. I think I would be very upset," Sirius took a lot of pride in his hair, and he really didn't have to do much to it at all. It was one good thing he'd inherited.

Sirius grinned at the giggles Betty seemed unable to control for very long. The alcohol was definitely getting to her, "They'd probably come up with something pretty gruesome. I'd much prefer someone to write the truth and only the truth, rather than twisted forms of it," he commented, though he was pretty sure she already was fully aware of this.

"Well, I suppose that's true, but I've never been much for following all the rules," he said with a wink and a knowing smirk.

Leaning against the wall, she took a sip of her drink, trying not to laugh through it. "Oh I bet you would too. Wouldn't be very good for your image, being bald. Certainly would cut down on your admirers." she said, tucking a bit of her own hair behind her ear.

She had probably already had too much to drink. Parties like this normally were the place where she indulged, since she rarely did otherwise. It was rare enough for her to not be working so it was understandable. Or it was to her current place of mind. "Hey, I write the truth. Just cause they only print the stuff on old ladies and cats doesn't mean I don't write it." She was proud of the truth. Sure she was not some ace reporter, but she tried. And she never lied, ever.

"I've noticed." she said, giggling again and holding her glass up to her face to hide it. This certainly had been more amusing than last years party, that was to say the least really.

Sirius scoffed, "I don't care about my admirers like I did in school. They're nice to have, but I try to focus on the more important things now. I do enjoy liking my appearance, however," he commented, shrugging slightly. He wouldn't mind if Betty was one of his admirers, that would actually please him. She was definitely different than his usual fancies.

Sirius laughed lightly, "I know you write it, which is one of the reasons I like you so bloody much," he said it off-handedly as he took another sip of his drink. She was one of the few who wrote the truth, which made him admire her. She didn't really seem to be afraid of speaking the truth, which was good, but after a certain point, even Sirius realised when it was reckless. They could do no good from Azkaban cells.

He smiled crookedly at her giggle, looking around a little. There was some sort of soft music playing, and it had a slight beat, but nothing too intriguing, "Does no one here dance?" he asked quietly.
