Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Lily Potter and Marlene McKinnon
When: Friday Evening
Where: Some pub in London
Rating: PG-13 at the most
Summary: It's a girl's night out.

This was supposed to be a fun night for Lily, a night where she went out with another girl and let her hair down for once. She had been looking forward to it for a few days not, but before leaving to meet Marlene, things took a decided turn for the worse. James was upset with her going out with Marlene, someone Lily knew he didn't like, but was that really fair? There had been times when Lily didn't like his friends, but she had stuck it out for his sake. Why couldn't he do the same for her? Was he really that upset over her wanting to spend a night out with someone when he did it more often than she did? It was almost a double standard - he liked her to be home, she understood, but she deserved to get out every once in awhile, didn't she.

Catching the glass the bartender slid across the bar at her, Lily cupped it between her hands as her nose crinkled when another puff of smoke was blown her way. That was part of the reason she never came to place like these. The smell always seeped into her clothes and hair, and seemed to stay there for weeks afterwards. But she needed this. This unwinding. This bit of fun and by goodness, she was going to have it whether James liked it or not.

And that's how she got three sheets to the wind. Feeling spiteful, she had had a few more drinks than she would have otherwise. Now, everything felt decidedly better, her body was nice and warm, and for some reason, she couldn't stop smiling no matter how hard she tried not to. It was bizarre and she had only ever been like this one other time in her life - the night after they had finished their seventh year.

Marlene could remember the last time she had went out with friends, friends that did not include her sister. It had been a while, considering all those people now currently wanted her dead. So she had to make new friends. While she did not like Potter and his gang really at all, she did not mind Lily and the redhead seemed like she could be a bit of fun. No one gained anything without taking a few risks, after all.

Waving another drink over from the bartender, she giggled. In a matter of moments she had her new drink and happily took a swig from it before turning to her cigarette. Lily did not seem to like them all that much, and Marlene was beginning to think that it was a Gryffindor trait to be morally against smoking. Then again she had seen more than her fair share of Gryffindors light up before, so that could hardly be the case. Still, it was beginning to look like a trend.

"You know, Lily, I think that fat guy over there is totally checking you out." she giggled into her drink, pointing over. "Hopefully he doesn't have the balls to make a pass at you." Though really, she was pretty sure that would be hilarious. And as for drunkenness, well, Marlene could be considered a bit of a lush. But in a world where people were being mauled to death all the time, who wasn't?

Following Marlene's lead, Lily took a sip from her drink, no longer making a face as it burned her tongue and the back of her throat. They were both a bit numb to it by this point, actually. Glancing over to the person Marlene was point out, Lily resisted the urge to crinkle her nose up in disgust.

"Ew," she said, a bit longer than was necessary and turned back to Marlene. "He reminds me of my sister's husband!" He did though, and that in itself was absolutely disgusting. But she knew it wasn't Vernon Dursley; had it been, he would be running the opposite way and throwing insults at her as he went, and he would never, ever be caught dead at a Pub in central London.

"You don't think he'll try to come over here, do you?" She wasn't sure how she would handle that sort of situation. She was a married woman and was out of practice with that sort of thing, especially with turning them down.

Marlene could not help but snort a little at the comparison to her brother-in-law. "Your sister, no offense, must have bloody awful taste." she laughed, shaking her head. "My sister's man looks like one of those... what you call them, film stars? Something like that." Shaking her head she took another drag, trying not to laugh again.

Harry would never be found at a place like this either, not unless Marlene's sister dragged him there, which was always a possibility. No one said no to Nadine McKinnon, no one. It was a well known fact after all.

Looking over at the guy again, she smirked. "Oh yeah, he'll probably come over. Or have one of his friends." she said. Setting her drink down she looked at Lily. "I totally bet a galleon that if he does come over he's going to pull one of those lines. You know, like 'Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?' Or some shit like that."

Lily laughed too, holding onto her drink so none of it wouldn't slosh over the sides of the mug. "None taken - he is horrible. He eats and acts just like a pig!" This caused her to fall into a fit of giggles, imagining Vernon with a tail and a snout. Too bad she had sworn she would never use magic in his or his sister's presence, it would have been perfect.

Her eyes widened and she looked over again. "They actually say those sorts of things?" she asked, disbelief apparent in her voice. "Don't the realise that those sorts of lines can never work on women?" Shaking her head, she turned back to the bar and took a sip of her drink. "I really hope they don't come over, I'd hate to let one of them down."

Marlene wrinkled her nose at the thought of that. "Oh Merlin, is he worse than Pettigrew or whatever the sod his name is?" she exclaimed before she could stop herself. Sure Lily's husband was friends with him, but honestly! The boy was frightful. "Oh, um, no offense by that either I guess." she said, not really all that sure really. Though he did have those ratty teeth of his, the rest of him was all pig by her standards.

Hiding behind her hand to giggle, she looked between the man and Lily. "Oh, they do. It's frightful! I haven't ad one used on me in a while though, so maybe men are wising up." Taking another sip she shook her head. "Don't worry about the saying no, he'll probably just move to some girl who's drunker and all that."

She shouldn't have said that about Peter, especially since Lily was friends with him too. "Peter might not be the most attractive person in the world, but he's sweet and means well, he's just horrible shy and awkward when around people he tries so hard to impress." Though she often wondered why he was still awkward around the other Marauders and her when they have been around for years. But even if Lily thought she should have been nicer to Peter, she didn't take offense to that. Not many people liked Peter Pettigrew because of his awkwardness so she could understand why Marlene didn't.

"I'm sober enough to tell him to sod off anyway, so we don't have to worry about him," she said, giving an affirmative nod to Marlene and taking another sip. "This is really good, have I said that yet tonight?"

Marlene rolled her eyes and knocked off a bit of ash into an ash tray. "You might be friends with him, but he's always made me feel awkward. Then again that could go for the whole foursome or whatever so that doesn't really mean much of anything." He was a tag along, and Marlene had hated those in her own house and people she had known, let alone people she already was predisposed to dislike. Still she was here to make friends, not start a fight. She could do that well enough sober.

"Said what yet tonight?" she asked, smiling. "Cause you've said a lot of things so far. Though nothing too terribly juicy I'm afraid. Just proves I'd be a horrible spy" she giggled.

Lily decided not to dignify that with a response and just momentarily purse her lips slightly. She wasn't sure if she liked or approved of Marlene so openly criticising not only her husband, but his friends too. But she was trying to be nice; Marlene didn't have a lot of friends in the Order so it might have been her defense mechanism to talk about them in such manner. Hopefully they would prove her wrong they had proven Lily wrong after she and James got together.

"Haven't I told you how much I love this drink?" she repeated, raising the glass to indicate what she was talking about. "I'd like to take at least two dozen of these home and keep them in the icebox for safe keeping." Arching an eyebrow at her, Lily gave her a curious look. "Nothing too juicy? I'm afraid I haven't got any juicy secrets to tell. You, on the other hand, must have one orr two dozen."

Tipping her drink slightly, Marlene looked at the level of it. "Sorry, might be a little blunt. Nadine calls shit like this honesty juice." Even if she was a bitch, she could be a bit more tactful when she was sober. Once the alcohol hit though tact was out the window. Right along with personal restraint and common sense. Which in most opinions would make drinking a rather bad thing, but Marlene found it to just be wonderful. Perhaps she really was a lush.

"You might have mentioned it once or twice." she said, smiling as she took another sip. "Bet you could ask the tender how to mix one. Just show him a little cleavage and I bet he'll tell you anything." Giggling again she shook her head. "You know, I bet the dirty little rumors about me are far more entertaining than anything I've actually done."

Lily appreciated the apology, knowing enough about Marlene to know that she wasn't one to apologise too often; most former Slytherins didn't unless they knew they were in the wrong. "I appreciate the apology," she said, reaching over and squeezing the other girl's hand. "It just takes a lot to get used to them," she admitted honestly, a small smile on her lips. "It took over six years personally."

Now that was a good idea, getting the list of ingredients and how to make it from the bartender, but there was no way she could flirt with someone enough to get anything out of them. At least no one but James since she was so out of practice. "I bet Sirius knows how to make it," she offered, making a mental note to ask him in the morning. Though maybe she would forget that in the morning if she kept going at the rate she was. "Oh, have I heard some of those rumours! One with Professor Slughorn in his office, no doubt. Please put my sanity at ease and tell me that one is false!"

Marlene did not apologize, as a general rule. However Gryffindors seemed to like that kind of thing and they were rather easily offended. Drunkenness helped loosen Marlene enough to apologize for things without feeling the urge to vomit because it was completely ridiculous. She decided to leave that be, since she knew she would never really get along with the Marauders. But she really did not want to deal with an argument now with one of their wives.

"Come on, Sirius might know but the cute bartender is right there!" she pointed out, shaking her head with amusement. It was not like she had to even snog a guy that she flirted with, really. There was nothing wrong with a little harmless fun last time she checked. Then again it might be morally reprehensible or some shit like that. She raised her eyebrows at that one and almost snorted into her drink. "Bloody hell, who came up with that one? I've got taste, thank you. We didn't even have any attractive professors."

Lily knew that Marlene had a point about the bartender being right there, especially so she would get that recipe a lot quicker (Sirius, knowing him, would likely add a few things she wouldn't ever want to know about to the mixture), but there was still that niggling feeling in the back of her mind. While flirting a little bit with the other man wouldn't technically be considered cheating by traditional standards, she couldn't bring herself to do it regardless; it still felt wrong to her. "I'll just ask Sirius," she said finally, shrugging her shoulders and taking a few additional sips of her drink. She was becoming an old married woman for sure.

When Marlene snorted in her drink and denied the rumour Lily had heard, she couldn't help but laughing against her glass as well. She sat it down for safekeeping. "There's no telling who comes up with these things, but he did favour quite a few people in our year if you remember so that's likely where the rumours circulated."

"Oh come on." she said with a laugh, taking a drag. Blowing the smoke away from Lily she smiled at the other woman. "You want me to do it for you? Would barely take anything at all. Plus then you'd get exactly what this guy puts in it. I mean, honestly, it's got to be the mixture and not the fact that he looks delicious that makes it taste so good." If that's where marriage got you, she did not want any part of it. Flirting was all about fun, why get rid of fun just because there was a man in your life? made no sense to her.

Smirking, Marlene pointed at her with her cigarette before taking another drag. "If that were the base of it, then there'd be more rumors about you than me. Thought you were one of his slug club children or something like that. My sister was in that, I never cared for the idea."
