Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Sirius Black and Remus Lupin
When: April 11th, late in the evening
Where: Shrieking Shack
Rating: TBA, but probably low. Paddycakes is trying to convince Moonmuffins to move in with him.
Status: Incomplete

Remus had arrived at the Shrieking Shack the day after the Order Meeting. He knew if he waited much longer he might not be able to get there on his own. The days leading up to the full Moon were excruciating and debilitating. With no job to interfere, he took it upon himself to go earlier than usual. It had been a smart move, because he'd been hit with a wave of extreme exhaustion that day and spent most of it sleeping.

This day had been a little less peaceful. Remus had been confined mostly to the worn old couch in the front room, prone to bouts of pain and coughing fits that left him gasping for air. Being that it was the day before his transformation, he knew it would be the most difficult to endure. But even though he knew what to expect after many years and many more Moons, Remus never got used to it. It always hurt.

He'd just made it through a rather painful coughing fit. His lungs burned as he gasped for the oxygen they craved. The hankerchief he'd used to cover his mouth had splatters of blood staining it crimson, the coppery taste still on his lips as he curled up into a tight ball. This was going to be a long night.

Things had been rather somber for Sirius lately. The attacks had left the Order reeling, and it had brought up bad memories of his childhood, the attack on defenseless beings. So, he decided that it was time to be happy again. Laden with a lot of chocolate in various forms ranging from chocolate frogs to a large block, and two big thermoses of hot cocoa, two mugs, and a few quilts, all stuffed into Sirius's old school bag with an extension charm placed on it. He also had a few potions on hand in case there was anything that could help his ailing friend.

A few moments of searching Remus's appartment revealed to Sirius that he wasn't there, but an immediate thought popped into his head. Shrieking Shack. Disapparating, Sirius popped right into the bedroom of the Shack. However, Remus wasn't there like Sirius suspected him to be. He heard a great deal of coughing coming from downstairs, seemingly from the front room. Sirius walked down the stairs and came right in, seeing his friend curled up on the ratty old couch.

"I thought you might like a bit of company," Sirius told Remus, a bit ashamed of not giving his friend proper warning, "I brought chocolate and quilts," he said, tugging at the long abused school bag. Sirius thought the gesture may offer some bit of comfort, but Moony didn't look good. In fact, he looked downright horrid. He was pallid and had a spot of scarlet blood on his lips. Sirius was determined not to let his slight surprise show, however, so he walked right over to the couch and took the spot by Remus's feet, grinning at him widely.

Remus had been planning on spending the rest of the night and the next day alone. His mates didn't usually join him until after the transformation had taken place, sneaking in to join him. Remus preferred it that way, not wanting anyone to see him during the time leading up to the Moon. He didn't want to worry them, either. So he was quite surprised when he heard Sirius' voice in the room with him. He didn't panic though, knowing right away that it was Sirius. No one else but the Marauders ever came inside the shack, so he wasn't worried about anyone finding him there.

He pushed himself up into a sitting position, slowly so as not to get dizzy, and wiped the blood from his lips. He hoped Sirius hadn't seen that. While Remus did not particularly want his best mate to see him like this, he was comforted by having him there. "Chocolate and quilts, eh?" He asid, grinning weakly. "You know the way straight to my heart."

He smirked at Remus, "I try." Sirius needed some conversation, no matter how pointless, to get something out of Remus, "You told me not to toss my bag in the rubbish bin, and you were right, Moony. It came in handy today. Quilts, chocolate frogs, Honeyduke's chocolate in dark, milk, white, caramel, peppermint, and orange...hot cocoa, some mugs, what more do we need? It all fit, with a little charm, of course." He gave Remus a bright smile and opened up the bag, yanking out a quilt and unfolding it, tossing it across Remus. Surprisingly, it actually covered him nicely instead of just falling into one spot.

"Behold...hot cocoa. One of the world's delicacies," He dug out a thermos and the mugs. Reaching his hand back inside, he looked at Remus with a serious expression, "The life altering question, however, is marshmellows or no marshmellows? Choose wisely, my friend," he was having a hard time keeping a straight face as he slowly drew out a bag of jumbo marshmellows.

"You see? My advice is valuable," he said, laughing a little. "One of these days you, Prongs, and Wormy will come to understand that." As Sirius listed off the variety of chocolate he'd brought with him. It was an impressive spread. A little glint sparked in his eyes, the first sign of life within them over the past few days. "You didn't have to buy out the whole store just for me, Pads."

Remus eyed the marshmellows, quirking an eyebrow. There really was no questioning it. If the option for marshmellows was there, Remus was going to take it. He raised a finger and twirled it, making the bag open. Wandless magic, a nifty little skill he'd acquired over the past couple of years. It really came in handy during these times, when his hand was too shaky to steadily hold a wand. With another twirl of his finger, a few marshmellows floated out of the bag. "Did you really have to ask, mate?" He let them plot into his mug.

"I never doubted the value of your advice, Remus. Only whether I would ever have a need for it," Sirius gave a wink, happy to see the light in his eyes at the mention of all the chocolate, "Oh, but I did." He was going to wait until Remus asked for some to get it out. He would have to dump it, that much he knew. There were multiples of the assortment, and too many of them looked too similar to find each specific flavour without getting them out.

Sirius grinned at Remus's bit of magic before doing the same with a few marshmellows in his own mug, "I didn't have to ask, but I thought I would anyway. It takes all the fun out of it, knowing exactly how your best mate takes his hot cocoa. I thought I'd at least give you the chance to surprise me," as he spoke, he opened the thermos and poured the two mugs full of the frothy chocolate liquid. He handed Remus's over and blew a little bit on his, seeing the steam rising from the surface.

Remus felt his spirit rise and his mood brighten. Sirius tended to have that effect on the people he was around. His happier disposition made him feel physically better, too. He knew it wouldn't last the night, but he'd take what he could get. "Can I get a bit of the dark chocolate?" He liked to dip it in his cocoa.

He took the offered mug and blew on it, eyeing the marshmellows floating on the top. His throat was very sore from all the coughing, but the taste from the hot cocoa would outweigh it. Remus took a sip, smiling as he swallowed it down. It was like the endorphins hit him instantly. "So, what brings Sirius Black to the Shack tonight? Did you mix up the dates?" He teased, grinning from behind his mug. He pulled the quilt around his shoulders with his free hand to keep warm.

Remus seemed to be a bit happier, which in turn made Sirius a bit happier too. He couldn't seem to wipe the smile off of his face, "Dark chocolate?" Sirius grabbed the bottom of the bag and tipped it, resulting in a huge amount of chocolate being deposited between the two of them. There were five or six bars of every kind and several sizes of bars, as well as more chocolate frogs than should be legal. He moved a few around before he found the dark chocolate, grinning wider when he handed it to Remus with a cheery, "Found it!" He grabbed a chocolate frog for himself, and shoved some of it back into the bag, but some of it he just left out for later.

Sirius shrugged, "Of course I didn't mix up the dates, Moony. I told you I planned to come over some time, and when I got to your flat, you weren't there, so I assumed you'd already come here, and I was right," He gave a small smile. It wasn't the only reason he had come. He was a man on a mission. He occupied himself with acquiring his own quilt and then sipping on his hot cocoa for a moment before slowly hedging into his main reason for coming, "I have a proposition for you as well." He knew Remus would put up a fight, but he'd had a while to think about it, and he had come up with a logical reason that he knew Remus wouldn't be able to refuse.

His eyes got a bit huge when he saw the abundance of chocolate that Sirius had brought. It was one thing to hear him list it all off, and another to see it right in front of him. Leave it to Sirius to be over the top in his gestures. Still, Remus appreciated it, and it showed in his smile. "Thank you," he said, shyly, as he took the dark chocolate. Remus dipped it into the hot cocoa. He watched it melt, mixing with the hot liquid. That would make it taste even better. He dropped the rest of it in to melt on its own while he drank.

"Look at you, thinking logically," he grinned. "You followed reason and managed to come up with a correct answer. I'm proud of you, mate." He nudged Sirius lightly, playfully. At the mention of a proposition, Remus quirked a brow. That could potentially be dangerous. "Do you? Dare I ask what it is?"

Sirius silently enjoyed the reaction he'd elicted by bringing all the chocolate, "No problem, Moony. Its my pleasure," Sirius shrugged, opening his chocolate frog and catching it before it could jump away, biting off all its legs first, and holding it before it stopped moving. Then, he dropped it into his hot cocoa with a grin. Remus had some brilliant ideas sometimes.

Sirius smirked and shrugged, taking the teasing in stride, "I've had several logical thoughts lately. My proposition being another one of them. I know what you're thinking. You probably think its some half baked, dangerous plan that'll get us in trouble, but I've actually spent a lot of time thinking about it. I think you should move into my flat, Remus." Well, he was a bit blunt at the end, but he was proud to have it out in the open.

Remus watched as the dark chocolate mixed with the milk chocolate, and soaked into the marshmellows. He fished one of the fluffy white clouds of sugar out of the cocoa with his teeth, chewing it and swallowing as he watched Sirius emulate his actions in his own way.

He blinked, taking a moment to let Sirius' proposition sink in and register in his mind. That wasn't what he'd been expecting. He thought Sirius was going to suggest something like toilet papering Lily and James' place and blaming it on Peter. Or hiding James' glasses somewhere he'd never guess to look. When Sirius mentioned moving in with him, Remus had nearly choked on his marshmellow. "You what..?" He blinked a couple of times.

Remus bit his bottom lip, looking down at his cocoa. "Sirius, that's really generous, but I can't do that."

Sirius watched Remus, seeing the surprise written on his friend's face. He was obviously not expecting that sort of proposition. Of course, when Sirius made propositions, they usually consisted of pranking someone and possibly blaming it on someone else for kicks, but Sirius had never quite made a proposition like this one. Remus was rightfully shocked.

He was expecting Remus to object, which is why he'd thought long and hard about it. Right now, Remus was living in a cramped little flat that he could barely pay for, and from the sounds of it, his electric and heat had been cut off. Remus had no job to pay rent, he had no means of providing for himself, and he certainly wasn't in any shape to get a proper job at the moment. So, Sirius had carefully devised his genious plan.

Sirius gave Remus a look that suggested he wasn't giving up any time soon, which he wasn't, "You can, and you will, Remus. I've thought about it, and its the only thing that makes sense! Its logical, just the way you like it."

Remus wasn't sure how to react to this. On the one hand, living with Sirius would be brilliant. They'd have a good time no doubt, and laughs would be had everyday. It would be much more fun to talk to Sirius every night rather than just curl up with his books to keep himself company. But no matter how Sirius spun this, it still felt like charity. Remus didn't mind letting his friends help him, but he didn't want to be a burden. They had their own lives to lead, their own endeavors to pursue. They'd looked after him for several years already. He couldn't ask them for anything else.

"I-I don't see how it's logical," he said, fingering the rim of the mug. He'd suddenly gotten very shy, very quiet. The mischief had left his expression, and he curled the quilt a little tighter around himself. The pain was starting to return too, but he hid it.

Sirius refused to be deterred, but he was still slightly down trodden at Remus's rejection. He was expecting exactly this reaction, but seeing it in his head and it actually happening was slightly different. Watching Remus withdraw into his quilt, the playful demeanor leaving him, sort of made Sirius sad. He knew Remus's concerns, he'd heard them a thousand times, but this was something he wanted to do. They were both bachelors, best friends, and Marauders. He didn't see how they could go wrong. He knew that he got lonely. He revelled in any time spent with his friends because he felt he didn't get to see them nearly enough.

"But it makes perfect sense," Sirius argued, "Hear me out," he hoped Remus wouldn't argue. He thought he had a rather solid reason, "If you stay at your flat, I will pay those bills, Moony. I'm not letting you go without, and I already found a way to secretly do it, I am a Marauder after all. If you move in with me, I will only pay those bills. Plus, I have a lot more room than you do, and nothing at all to do with it. Having you there would mean a lot to me. I know both of us sit in our flats every night and hate that silence...we were never quiet at school. Our dorm was loud even when we were asleep. Come to my flat, take a bit to get back on your feet, get another job, save some money...I'll even let you help pay bills and stuff, okay? I won't do everything. A lot of people have roommates, Remus. Don't shy away from it because you think you'll be an imposition. Nothing would make me happier than for you to put some use to that space I have, and I'm not just saying that," Sirius insisted. He thought it was a solid arguement. If that didn't convince Remus, he didn't know what would.

Remus frowned a little. He didn't want Sirius paying his bills for him. It had been hard enough accepting monetary help from James. His independence was important to him. He'd been unable to do so many things, and had to shelf so many dreams, but he still always managed to get by. What his friends failed to understand was that this wasn't something out of the ordinary. It wasn't a big deal. Remus knew he was always on borrowed time regardless of the job he had. He wasn't even that upset about losing it; it was just something he accepted as a part of his life. Still, as much as he didn't want to accept their charity, it touched him that they were so quick to want to help.

Sirius was a genius when it came to his timing, it seemed. Had he chosen any other time of the month, Remus probably would've made a perfectly logical counter argument to combat him with. But his vision was blurry, his head was fuzzy, and he could barely think. Sirius had even bribed him with cocoa and chocolate. Remus had to hand it to him. Sirius was good at what he did.

...He still had to try to prove his point. "Listen, Sirius," he began. "I--" he barely managed to set the mug on the coffee table and bring his hankerchief up to his lips as he started coughing violently. His whole body tensed and he clutched the quilt with his free hand so tightly that his knuckles turned white. A wolf-like yelp escaped his throat as he felt pain shoot through all of his limbs, causing him to double over. It lasted for several minutes, and even when it passed, Remus was left hunched over and panting for another moment before he could move or even speak again.

His gaze remained on his lap. This was exactly why he didn't want his friends coming around, and why he couldn't live with Sirius. "I'm s-sorry," he said, his voice hoarse and strained. "I can't.. Sirius, I can't subject you to this. You mean too much to me. You don't need this, on top of everything else. The war, the Order, and you've still got your own life to lead."

Sirius could only sit there helplessly through the entire coughing fit. He didn't know what to do exactly, other than just be there. He felt odd though, like he couldn't just sit there and let it pass by. He knew this was normal, unfortunately. He frowned at Remus's attempt at arguement, listing off all the things that didn't really matter to him at the moment. Yes, they were all important, but the only thing more important was his friends...Remus.

He shook his head in denial, "No." It was simple, and Remus just didn't want to see it, "You wouldn't be subjecting me to anything, Remus. You wouldn't be a bother or anything of the sort. I'm asking you because you mean just as much to me. You're not getting it...the war, the Order, my own life...none of it will be hindered by this. I do need this. It would make me happy. I can't keep sitting around at home, wondering what you and James, and Pete are doing. That's what I do in my spare time, you know, think about you guys and all that we did in school. I feel like things are changing entirely too fast. I always wanted my independence, to live by myself, but now that I've got it I find my self hating it. It feels like everyone is either entirely too busy right now, or putting everything on hold because of the war. It may not even end in our lifetime, Remus. We may die before this war is over, and how am I living my life? I'm fighting with all that I have every day, and I come home to nothing. Do you see that not only do I need this, but it would make us both happier? Its the only thing I can think of that makes sense. I know you want your independence too...you always have. Moving in with me doesn't mean that you have to lose it," Sirius didn't lie about any of it.

He felt himself slipping. He was becoming less and less of who he once was, and he hated it. He didn't feel like himself unlesss he was with one of his mates...which was probably bad. He had sort of defined himself by them. Now that they weren't there...they were changing, and so was he. Sirius desperately wanted to hang onto every last bit of the carefree life he'd always pictured. At the same time, he thought he needed to grow up. Remus's influence was a positive one, a mature one. They could still be immature like they had been at school, but he felt as though if Remus moved in, whenever he did leave, Sirius would be more prepared for living on his own, in some odd way.

Remus forced himself to look up from his lap and over at his best mate, listening as Sirius reasoned with him. He heard everything Sirius had to say, and he made good points. It would make them both happier. They were both fighting this war and going home alone, with no one to talk to or confide in when things did get too hard. Remus was used to dealing with things on his own, but after having Sirius, James and Peter around for so long he'd also gotten accustomed to having his friends close by. James had Lily now, and Merlin knew what Pete was up to. But Sirius.. Remus always had Sirius. And Sirius would always have him.

Though Sirius made some very good points, it was not his words that convinced him. It was how he looked. It broke Remus' heart to see him look so sad, and almost lost. He was used to seeing Sirius full of life, his eyes sparkling with the light of the stars that made up his name. Remus couldn't bear to see Sirius like this. He wanted so much for him to be happy again. Not to mention, they were good for each other. There was a balance created when they were together. Remus helped keep Sirius from getting too out of controle, and Sirius would be the first to point out if Remus was taking himself too seriously.

"Will you at least let me clean the house and do the dishes to help earn my keep?" He asked, that being his way of saying that Sirius had won this discussion.

Sirius had a feeling that it wasn't entirely his words that convinced Remus. However, when he said the words of acceptance, Sirius didn't really care what got him to accept it. His eyes suddenly lit up with happiness, a wide smile breaking out over his face. He could see a million scenarios passing in front of his eyes of the things the future would bring for them. He knew that it wouldn't be forever. Remus would have to leave again eventually, but for the time being, they would have one another close. That was something that meant the world to Sirius. He always feared being alone more than anything. He felt this would be good for both of them.

"Deal," Sirius stuck out his hand in offering for their super secret Marauder handshake. It was a bit silly, a bit complicated, and before revisions, a bit dangerous, but they had always done it. Now, it was just a trademark, a confirmation. If they didn't do the handshake, it seemed unofficial. While this wasn't entirely Marauder business, it involved half of their quartet, so he deemed it worthy of the handshake.

Remus didn't know how long it would last, but once he'd accepted Sirius' offer, most of the inhibitions he had about it faded away. He didn't want to be pitied, and he hoped that this wasn't that. But Sirius was the type that needed to have his friends around; Remus felt that Sirius would've liked for him to move in with him anyway. It was just that Remus' unfortunate situation sparked Sirius to put the idea into motion. That was what Remus chose to believe, anyway. That was how he was able to be okay with this.

When he stuck his hand out, Remus smiled and took it with his own. "The handshake, eh?" He beamed as they went through the silly but completely necessary movements. "I think that holds up stronger legally than my signing a lease."

Sirius laughed barkingly, "Yes, Moony. There's no way you're going to get out of it now. That handshake sealed your fate," he grinned broadly, very happy with that arrangement. It had been a bit more difficult than Sirius had expected to convince Remus, but he always seemed to surprise Sirius in one way or another. That was one of the things Sirius liked most about Remus. He always made Sirius think.

He pulled the quilt up around himself, settling back into his corner of the couch with a contagious grin on his face, "I think it'll work out for the better, Remus. We both have company, and we can help to support one another financially and emotionally. Its a win-win situation. I mean, with the war, you never know how much time you have left...and well, I intend to spend mine living as happily as I can." That was Sirius's resolve. In light of the horrible week, it had truly hit him how fleeting life was. He didn't plan to waste another moment.

Remus nodded slowly. The reality of the situation was starting to settle in. As Sirius listed off some more of the positive aspects about them living together, Remus smiled. He was right. And when you took the werewolf part out of the equation, there was really no reason for them not to live together.

He was a little saddened to hear Sirius speak of them not knowing how much time they had left. He preferred it when his best mate talked enthusiastically about unrealistic dreams or was laughing about Merlin knew what. But Remus knew that no one could be happy all of the time, not even Sirius Black. What he said was spot on; they really didn't know how much time they had left, or even if this war would end during their lifetime.

"When would be best for me to start moving in?" He asked, settling back against the couch and curling up beneath his quilt.

Sirius was suddenly hyper at the mention of moving Remus in, seeing the smile on his friend's face, "As soon as you feel better." It was as simple as that to Sirius. Remus might as well have signed his name on a dozen legal documents. There was no possible way that he would allow Remus to change his mind now, so there was no point in waiting. It was just another day apart. Plus, moving was always fun in Sirius's opinion. You always found a lot of neat stuff that you forgot you had, and they had to face the reality of things...Remus had a lot of stuff. Mainly, however, it was books.

Knowing that he would be putting his best foot forward to make Remus happy as well as making himself happy put a big, goofy grin on Sirius' face. It was right for them to be happy. They should be happy. In a world of war, they needed more happy people to lift the spirits of others! Sirius smirked at Remus and said, "Prongs is going to be happy."
