Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Andromeda and Sirius, with a special cameo by Nymphadora
When: Sunday evening
Where: The Tonks household
Rating: Fun family times here!
Status: Incomplete

It was hard to keep the secret that Sirius was coming over to play. Andromeda had to bite her tongue a couple of times so as not to spill it to Nymphadora that her favorite playmate was going to be there soon. She focused on helping Dora with the paste so she wouldn't get it all over herself or her dress up fairy wings (which had become a staple lately; Dora loved those things). They had a little scare when a bug surfaced from the pile of leaves and twigs they brought in from the backyard, but Andromeda had taken care of it and gotten it back outside. While Dora wasn't looking, Andi had shuddered and cringed (she hated bugs .. Ted was the exterminator in their household, not her) and did a little icky dance to ward off the feeling of having bugs crawling all over her. Andi's petname for her daughter was "Cricket," but she had a feeling she wasn't going to be calling her that for a few days.

"Sweetie, remember what I told you about only needing a dot of paste to make the leaves stick?" She reminded her, though it was a little futile as she watched Dora spread the paste everywhere and just sort of throw the leaves and twigs on the piece of construction paper to see what would stick. Well, that was one way of doing it, she noted. Her eyes darted towards the front door every so often. Truth be told, she was just as excited to see Sirius as she knew her daughter would be. Andromeda didn't have as many friends these days. Seeing her cousin was going to be a real treat.

Sirius walked up to Andi's house, thinking about the evening ahead. He was going to see two of the only people in his family that he could actually stand. Andi, well, she was one of the few people that truly cared about Sirius, which meant he adored her. And little Dora had Sirius wrapped around her finger. She was a light in his life. It had been far too long since he had dropped in and he felt slightly guilty. It wasn't like him to stay away for so long, but with the work for the Order, he didn't want to bring any unwanted company to the Tonks household. They were targets purely because of Ted and Andi's so called betrayal, and Sirius didn't want to add to the danger, not that he would tell them that. He kept it to himself, made up little excuses like being very busy and having appointments to go to. It was safer for them that way, but he couldn't keep away for ever. Besides, he missed them terribly.

He gave a light knock on the door, a smile stretching his mouth. He couldn't help but bounce a little on the spot, even with his hands in his pockets, in anticipation. Dora was going to get a huge surprise when the door opened. He couldn't wait to see them both.

With Dora occupied, Andromeda had started getting a few things out for the meal she was intending to prepare as well as a few glasses for beverages. She was going to make sure Sirius had some good food while he was here. While she knew he was perfectly capable of taking care of himself, he was also a teenage boy living on his own. She was pretty sure he hadn't had a home cooked meal in a while unless the girl his friend James was with made dinner for him. And yes, that meant eating vegetables.

When she heard a knock at the door, followed by her daughter shouting "MUMMY! DOOR!" she smirked a little and stepped out of the kitchen. "Thank you for listening, sweetie." She had told Dora that it was very important she always let either Mummy or Daddy answer the door no matter what. Andromeda crossed the livingroom to the front door and peered out of the peep hole. Even though she knew it was probably Sirius, she wasn't going to risk it. When she saw the familiar face on the other side, she couldn't help but smile brightly as she unlocked the door and opened it.

"Shhh," she immediately brought a finger up to her lips when she saw him. His arrival had to be a surprise for Dora, no matter how much she wanted to squeak and give him a big hug. She stepped back from the door to let him in, then motioned for him to go into the living room. That's where Dora was.

Sirius could faintly hear Dora's shout through the door, which made him chuckle slightly. He smiled even wider when Andi answered the door and motioned him in, mouthing a hello. He knew she was holding back from her greeting in order to give Dora a surprise. Sirius would give Andi a big hug right after he was no longer a surprise. He would make sure of it.

He was met with the sight of Dora smearing paste and twigs around on a piece of paper, wearing very large fairy wings. He looked over his shoulder and raised his eyebrows at Andi. Fairy wings? Really. She was a metamorphmagus, not a fairy. Of course, she was also an imaginative little girl, "Since when did you sprout wings?" He asked with a grin over at Dora, waiting for the small girl's reaction.

Andromeda felt it was worth it to suppress her own excitement for the sake of her daughter's surprise. Dora's smile and laughter were like tiny miracles to Andi, and she felt lucky to experience them everyday. Sirius didn't have that luxury, so she wanted to share it with him.

--

Dora was in the middle of making a picture for her Daddy's desk and another one for the refridgerator. She had been working really hard on them both and knew that they were going to be works of art. When she heard a voice behind her, at first she thought it was her daddy. "Since always," she replied, matter-of-factly. But that wasn't Daddy's voice. Dora turned around. As soon as she saw her cousin standing there her eyes got HUGE and sparkly.

"SIRIUS!" she squealed, leaping out of her chair (subsequently knocking a good portion of her supplies onto the floor, prompting a slight groan from her Mum). She stumbled a couple of steps, but gained enough momentum to jump up and dive into him, clinging tight.

Sirius laughed loudly when Dora launched herself into his arms, he caught her tightly, only stumbling back slightly. He swung her around, smiling all the while, "There's my Dora. Have you missed me?" He asked, already knowing that she had. He was reluctant to put her down, though she was much too old to carry around like he used to. He set her back on the floor, but crouched more to her level, his eyes gleaming bright and happy. It was probably the happiest he'd been in a while. Sure, his friends were amazing, but he got to see them often. This was a treat, and Dora and Andi were lights in the darkness of his past.

"Show me what you were making," Sirius requested, the smile never fading, "Maybe I can help." Every moment of his childhood that was painful and rotten was worth it seeing the two of them. If he had not been born a Black, he wouldn't know them, and that is what made him actually appreciate his name. They were the black sheep of the family, but they were the only one's that weren't mad.

Andromeda's smile grew as she watched Dora nearly explode with happiness. She knew her little girl adored Sirius and that he was her favorite playmate. It filled her heart with joy to see them together. It was also good to know that she had a bit of her blood family to still be close to. Even though they'd been banished as traitors, it was reassuring to Andromeda that she wasn't the only member of the Black family who thought the way she did about others. It was just the icing on the cake that it was Sirius who shared her thoughts, being that he was her favorite relative anyway.

When Andi saw that they were busy, she headed back into the kitchen to check on the food.

--

Dora took Sirius by the hand when he set her down. "I'm making Daddy a new picture and Mummy wants some of my art for the fridge. So I'm doing both at once." She started tugging him over to the table she'd been sitting at. Dora's hair had been a deep shade of blue for most of the day, but now that Sirius was here it had shifted into a shocking, vivid pink that stood out on all ends. "See, this is the unicorn," she said, pointing to a few leaves and sticks that really just looked more like a blob. "Mummy likes those. And then in Daddy's picture it's me and him playing in the yard. You can work on the unicorn for Mummy."

Sirius watched Andi go back into the kitchen and realized that the house smelled wonderful. She was cooking, and he had the sneaking suspicion that it was partly because he came over. She was always trying to take care of him. Andi cared so much, more than he felt he really deserved. He would have to give her an extra big hug when she got back into the room.

Sirius sat down with Dora and listened patiently while she explained what she was doing. Her pink hair made him happy. It seemed like it always turned that shade when he visited, which made him wonder what exactly that meant. She was always so happy when he was around. Maybe the shade meant she was excited, "Its such a great unicorn, Dora. I'll try not to mess it up," he promised, grinning fondly at the twig and leaf blob on the paper that were smeared with sticky paste. He picked up a few sticks and began working, watching her with a smile out of the corner of his eye. She was just too adorable.

Andromeda plated three salads to get them started. She was making pasta and bread, too. But she wanted to make sure that they were getting their share of vegetables first. Dora hated that part, but Andi knew that if Sirius ate it, then she would too.

She set the plates on the kitchen table, then walked to the doorway to watch the two of them again for a few more minutes. A grin spread across her lips once more as she observed them.

--

"You can do it," Dora assured him, kneeling in her chair to give herself a little more height. "Especially if you know what a unicorn looks like. I did most of the hard stuff already." She started sticking twigs to the edges of the paper; it was her way of making a sort of frame for the picture.

"I've seen a few unicorns before. You really did get a good start on it," he told her moving a few things around, but not changing much of what he had started out with. Sirius made what he thought to be a pretty good looking unicorn, all things considered. It was slightly more distinguishable than the blob he had started with. The little statement, meant as a boost of confidence from Dora, made him smile. He saw her little frame and began putting leaves around the edge of his paper, to give the unicorn a forest frame.

He suddenly felt like he was being watched and looked over his shoulder to see Andromeda standing there watching them. He gave her a big smile and an excited, fake gasp, sticking the last leave to the edge. He scrambled to his feet, winking at Andi, "Look, Andi, look! Dora and I made a unicorn. She did all the hard stuff, but I finished it!" He told her, fighting off laughter, managing to keep it just as an extra sparkle in his eyes.

Andromeda beamed and went over to look at the pictures. "You did, did you?" She asked, her voice a little exaggerated with interest. "That is the most beautiful unicorn I've ever seen! You know what? It's time to eat some dinner. And while we eat, the paste can dry and afterwards we'll put it right on the fridge!" She ran a hand through her daughter's spiked pink locks. "Oh and Dora, that is a beautiful picture of you and your daddy." Andromeda had become an expert at interpreting Dora's art. "Why don't you go wash your hands really good, all right? Then come straight to the kitchen."

--

Dora squealed with excitement at her finished pictures. "See?! I told you it wouldn't be hard. You must be an expert on unicorns. And you didn't even get stuck to the table!" She giggled, then waved her arms as Sirius told Mummy all about the picture. "He did, Mummy! He finished it all by himself!"

She grumbled a little when she was told to wash her hands but obliged. "Okaaaaay." She hopped out of her seat and practically flew out of the room.

Sirius watched as Dora exited the room before bending over in silent laughter, his face a bit red, but a slight grin still present, "She's something else," Sirius whispered to Andi, gesturing after Dora. He was a paste expert, so he managed to keep his hands spotless. His little accomplise, however, seemed to be a rather sticky mess. Sirius gathered himself and stood straight again, moving over to Andi.

He pulled her into a tight embrace, lifting her off the floor a little, "I meant to do this when I walked in, but I was a secret," Sirius told her, not letting go and smirking widely, "I missed you all." Despite the smirk on his lips and the unseriousness in which he seemed to be approaching the statement, there was no denying the sincerity in his voice. He knew Andi, of all people, would be able to pick up on it.

Andromeda hoped Dora remembered to wash under her fingernails as well, but wasn't counting on it. She'd have to check before she let her start eating. She looked up at Sirius as he moved over to her. "You were a big secret."

When he hugged her, Andromeda immediately wrapped her arms around his shoulders and returned the embrace. It had been far too long since they'd last seen each other and she'd missed him more than she realized. Just seeing him interact with Dora had nearly brought her to tears. She knew he meant what he said. Even through the casual tone, she could tell. Sirius was just like that, and she was too. "We missed you too," she said softly, hugging him tight. "I'm really happy to see you."

He gave her one last, tight squeeze before releasing her from his hold, looking at her fondly with all his emotions displayed in his eyes. He didn't know how to feel. Was he relieved, happy, excited, almost saddened? It didn't seem like he should be sad, but not seeing them for so long was something to be sad about, wasn't it?

He looked to the floor for a moment before gathering that Gryffindor courage of his to look back into her eyes, "I'm sorry that I stayed away for so long. I could give you a thousand reasons why, and they'd probably all be true, but there is no excuse for it. I suppose the only thing that may be acceptable is a little apology and a promise to not keep up the pattern I've been forming," The war had phased Sirius. He was beginning to realize, though, seeing them again, that he couldn't waste any more time. Dora was starting to grow up on him; Andi was worrying about the war. He didn't want to miss something and regret it later.

Andromeda could see all the mixed emotions her cousin was feeling, and they somewhat reflected her own. She was a little sad, too. Still, she smiled warmly at him and squeezed one of his hands.

"You don't ever have to explain yourself to me, Sirius. I'm not going to punish you. However, Nymphaora might. And I can tell you from experience you really don't want that." She reached up and ruffled his hair, something she did a lot to tease him when they were younger. "Now, I promised you I'd get a good meal in you while you were here." She pulled him into the kitchen in a similar fashion that Dora had used to tug him into the living room before.

Andromeda released her hold on him once they were in the kitchen. "Have a seat, and tell me what you'd like to drink. We've got water, iced tea, Dora's been obsessed with pear juice and we've been learning the importance of sharing so you're welcome to some of that, milk, and.." she grinned at him, "..fire whiskey, though I think that'll be better for a night when you and I can sit down and share the battlescars of our youth."

Something rare happened when she reached up and ruffled his hair. A slight flush rose to Sirius's cheeks, however, he didn't say a word. He merely shook his hair in a rather dog-like fashion and made his hair fall carelessly back where it had been, "I know I don't have to explain myself, but I feel like I should. It isn't right, to be the only family that cares about one another and to not pop in once and a while. I guess my job is really just driving me into the ground," 'more like driving me away,' he added silently. Andy didn't quite know what he did. She knew he was helping with the war efforts, but that's all he had breally been able to tell her, with a promise that he'd keep himself as safe as possible, "It smells fabulous," Sirius told her with a grin, allowing himself to be pulled into the kitchen.

He took a seat as directed and grinned widely at the mention of fire whiskey, though it wasn't a Dora appropriate drink, "We'll save the whiskey for now. I'd like a bit of tea, please," he found himself wanting to be as polite as possible, not only because he respected Andi nearly more than anyone else he knew, but also because he knew that they were trying to teach Dora how to have good manners, and she would undoubtedly be back soon.

She listened as he explained himself, though it wasn't necessary. Andromeda knew that Sirius was involved in the war, but she didn't ask questions. He'd tell her what he wanted her to know, and she'd leave it at that. It was noble of him, in her opinion, and given her position on things she was supportive. Just not as outwardly so, because she did not want to put her husband and daughter anymore at risk than they already were. "I do my best," she said, smiling as he complimented the aroma of the food.

"Tea it is, then. But some night you and I are going to get sloshed." Even though she was a Mum, Andromeda was still young. She could still party it up if she wanted to. She poured him a glass of tea. His manners amused her, but she hid it with her smile.

---

"I washed all of my fingers," Dora announced as she burst into the kitchen. "And I washed my toes too!" She giggled and climbed into her seat. She still had a booster seat because she was quite small. She picked up the glass of pear juice her mummy had just poured for her and started sipping it out of a straw that was sort of curly-q shaped. It was a really nifty straw and she just had to use it at every meal. "Aww, do I have to have salad?" She made an icky face.

"I look forward to that night," Sirius told her with a wide grin. He knew that Andi didn't let loose often, but that she definitely could and would. It was good to let go of all the bad things in the world sometimes and just drink. It was good to sit with a friend and complain about all your woes in a drunken stupor that would nearly kill you the next morning. Not remembering was also good, especially if you did something particularly embarassing, "I'll brink extra." He threw in a hearty wink with his smirk.

He looked up as Dora came in and announced that she'd washed all of her digits. He watched with amusement as she drank pear juice out of a ridiculously twisted straw. He had to admit that it was rather neat though. He gave a play gasp when she grimaced at the salad. He knew what Andi was doing, "But Dora, salad is so good! You don't like it? That surprises me. Its only the best food in the whole wide world," he pretended to be aghast, looking at his own salad with a smile.

"Me too," she said with a grin. She had to suppress a laugh when Dora came in and announced she'd washed both her hands and her feet. Andromeda had learned a long time ago not to question her daughter's methods or why she did the things she did. As long as she wasn't making a huge mess or doing something that could be potentially dangerous, Andi usually let Dora march to the beat of her own drummer. Besides, improving her hygiene was something Andi encouraged. She wasn't about to stop her.

The smirk on her face tugged a little upward when Dora protested her vegetables. "Yes, you do." When Sirius made a show of how good it was, she had to stifle a laugh. "See? Sirius likes it." She moved to start plating the pasta she'd made for them.

--

Dora groaned. "But Muuuuummy!" She sighed. When Sirius said he liked it she pouted her bottom lip. "Are you sure it's the best, Sirius? Because I'm pretty sure chocolate is the best food ever." She speared a piece of lettuce with her fork and eyed it suspiciously.

Sirius shook his head to deny Dora, though he really sort of agreed. Remus had made him very fond of chocolate in past years, "Salad is good for you and it tastes really good, so I think that qualifies it as the best food in the world. Plus, its green, and I like that color."

Sirius nodded to Andi grinning and giving her a secret wink, eating a large bite of his salad, "Mhmmm." He really wasn't a huge salad fan, but everyone had to eat some vegetables at some point, "Its really good, Andi. Maybe the best salad I've ever eaten. Still, he was eyeing the pasta, though as discretely as he possibly could.

Andromeda usually came up with creative ways to present healthy foods to Nymphadora, but she figured with Sirius there he'd be enough to get her to eat it. She smiled, watching the two of them as she finished up with the pasta. She'd eat later with Ted, once he got home.

"Five bites of salad, Cricket. Then you can have your pasta." She grinned at Sirius. "That goes for you too, mister."

--

Dora tilted her head. "I like green too," she said. And as if to confirm that, her spiky pink hair shifted into long green waves. "Five whole bites?" She groaned, but started eating it. Once she'd downed three, she looked over at Sirius, chewing her food up. "You know what? I'm five years old," she said. "That's a whole hand!" She raised her hand, waving her fingers to make her point.

Sirius grinned at Andi, "Only five? I was actually planning on eating the whole thing. I don't have to stop at five, do I?" He knew that if he ate it, Dora would follow in his footsteps. She generally liked whatever it was he liked. She looked up to him, something that Sirius loved. Having her look up to him made Sirius feel like he must have done something right.

Sirius smiled at Dora, "Just five? But you must be older. It feels like I've known you for forever!" Sirius told her, feigning disbelief, "I'm eighteen. I have to count on both of my hands and my toes." He smiled as if he were proud. Of course, in this day and age, with his job and the family he came from paired with his views, he supposed he was lucky to still be alive.

"Well, if you think you're grown up enough to handle cleaning your plate then by all means go right ahead," she said, playing along. She too knew that if Sirius ate it all, Dora would too. Andromeda thought it was precious how much Dora looked up to Sirius, and found it endlessly entertaining to watch whenever he was around.

"We won't even talk about what it takes to count to Mummy's age," Andi said, smirking. She was still pretty young, especially to have a five year old, but she still wasn't about to tell her daughter how many digits it would take to reach her age. She brought over their plates of pasta and set them down next to their salad plates. "I'm feeling generous. You can eat both at the same time."

--

"I promise I'm five!" She insisted, kicking her feet against the chair since they didn't reach the floor yet. "When I'm eighteen, then I can do that too! And I'll be able to fly on a broom." She squeaked with happiness when her mummy put the pasta down for them. She immediately scooped up a fork full and slirped up the noodles. Andi always let her do it, since she'd had to uphold proper manners as a child.

"Thank you!" Sirus told her with another slight wink. He was loving the family atmosphere he was getting right now. He didn't get to share it often. He rarely had dinner with anyone other than himself unless he was with Remus or went over to the Potter's. It was nice to have conversation.

"Well, in a month, I'll be nineteen, so that's one more toe to count," Sirius acknowledged. Andi was still very young, and they both knew it. She just couldn't count her age on her fingers and toes anymore, "Your generousity is greatly appreciated."

Sirius nodded excitedly, "Flying is a lot of fun. When it comes to Quidditch though, whatever anyone tells you, the beater position is the most fun. You get to hit things." He gave her a wide smile before turning to his pasta and taking a big bite, "Its delicious, Andi."

"You're going to run out of toes and be an old hag like me before you know it," she teased, sitting with them at the table. "If boys can be hags, anyway." Andi couldn't wipe the smile off her face. She was so happy to have Sirius here, and hoped it wouldn't be so long before his next visit. Having him there was like having the only piece of her old life worth hanging onto with her.

Of course, when the conversation turned towards the possibility of Nymphadora flying around hitting things, she raised an eyebrow. "As long as the hitting stays on the pitch."

--

"Really?" Dora's eyes lit up. "Do you think I could play Quidditch? Daddy took me to a match once. I want to play when I get bigger!" She slirped up some more noodles. "I can be a Beater I bet. Will you teach me how?"

"I don't think boys can be hags. You'll have to be an old hag all by yourself, Andi," Sirius jested, giving her a cheeky grin. The banter always came so easily with them. It was almost like when he was with the Maruaders. Andi was the only one from his early childhood he felt worth clinging to.

Sirius nodded eagerly, "Hitting definitely stays on the pitch. And you don't hit people, just bludgers." He didn't want to give Dora the impression that it was okay to hit things without purpose.

Sirius smiled widely at Dora, "I think you could play when you get older, and I think you'd be very good at being a Beater. Of course I'll teach you, poppet," It would be something Sirius enjoyed doing. He was a Quidditch fanatic, and while it would be a few years until she was old enough to begin training, he looked forward to it.

Andromeda smirked. "Poor old hag, all alone. The young ones will tell stories about me and take turns running up to my porch to see if I'll come chase them down the street."

She laughed, reaching to gently push some of Dora's hair behind her shoulders so she didn't get it in her food. "I think it's a brilliant idea. Of course, you're going to practice on the ground first." It pleased her, to hear that Sirius wanted to teach Dora. Even if she wasn't thrilled with the idea of her daughter hitting objects with sticks, the fact that it meant Sirius would be coming around more often outweighed that.

--

"You will?" A big grin took over Dora's expression. She knew just like Mummy that it meant Sirius would be visiting more in the future. Not even her mum's comment about having to stay on the ground could rain on that thoguht. Dora hopped out of her seat and bolted into Sirius' lap, clinging. "So you can come play with me more too!"

Sirius shrugged, smirking, "I would do it. I'd like to see you attempt to catch me."

Sirius nodded in agreement. Flying and hitting would come seperately before they put them together, most definitely, "Kind of like that muggle sport. What's it called...Faceball...Caseball? Well, its something like that." He noticed a pleased look on Andi's features and momentarily wondered what it was about, but Dora's voice distracted him.

"I most definitely will! I promise," Sirius told her, a wide grin of his own mimicking hers. He was only slightly surprised when she sprang into his lap, clinging to him. He had obviously said something right. She was obviously happy. He smiled fondly at her, "Yes, Dora. I'll come play more too." He ruffled her hair a bit and placed a kiss on the top of her head. How could he not love her?
