Prompt: Final Fantasy VII, Sephiroth/Cloud: puppet – Cloud had precious little willpower – pull the right strings and he would do anything.
Summary: Finding the puppet strings.
It had taken him some time to pull his consciousness together after he’d fallen into the mako. It helped that the rest of the souls there wanted nothing to do with him, further proof that he was something else, something beyond their understanding that was more than them, more than anything. Mother helped too, rescuing his body before it could be destroyed, though much of it was still damaged. She crystallized the energy around it, savagely shredding the souls of those creatures to put them to a much better use than ShinRa ever had. Then she swept the crystal away to the Northern Crater to rest safely in the depths of that wound, and began sweeping up the stray bits of his thoughts.
When he came to himself he found that he could sweep through the Lifestream and travel across the Planet without any encumbrances. More than that, every once in a while a spark would come into being that piqued his interest. Finally he gave into curiosity and investigated one of those sparks and found…himself. Or something like himself, an empty body that was waiting for him to take it and make it his own whenever he wanted to. A costume, a…puppet.
One of those puppets was different from the others; it was just as bright, if not brighter, more powerful, but he couldn’t slide himself into it quite the same way. When he looked further he found the little blond trooper that had flung him into the mako in the first place, that had gotten him into the situation.
At first he wanted to kill the insolent child, but the longer that he watched him, the longer he saw Hojo experiment on the boy and the other person (Zack, my…friend, part of him whispered, while the other hissed, the traitor), the more he realized how different Cloud was from the others. Not a shell to slide into, but a true puppet, a being that existed on its own but that he could control with the slightest tug. Cloud had precious little willpower – pull the right strings, and he would do anything.
Sephiroth refrained from doing much with him during those long years as he watched and waited for everything to come to fruition, but Hojo had no idea how often he watched the man work in the lab from behind those empty blue eyes, studying his creator-father. It was only here that he thought of his most secret plans, to eliminate the man once he had everything he wanted, and to eject Mother back on her own into space, while he took the Planet for his own. And as time passed, he resolved that he would keep this puppet with him even after that, loyal at his side.
