Up Date : Snails, Shrimp and Marble Crayfish.

I am up to 4 colors of shrimp of the Neocaridina species. I have Blue (not sure if they will remain blue), Green, Yellow and last but not least Cherry. They are very easy to take care of they and breed often.

I did get Marbled Crayfish (Procambarus Marmorkrebs) and actually ended up with 4. Two to a tank and what is funny is that in one tank they turned blue and the other they are the black/gold that you see in photos. I am waiting to see if they self clone (they reproduce parthogenically).

I also have purchased the "Assassin Snails" (Antentome helena) - They feed on pest snails. They are just of of a few carnivorous predatory snails from Indonesia.

Shrimps and Crayfish

I am really excited. A friend gave me 7 Green Shrimp a few weeks ago and I just discovered babies. Plus I ordered in 25 blue shrimp and they have babies. I am still searching for the food that keeps blue shrimp blue. They are both from the Neocaridina species which is the strain Cherry shrimp come from.

I have been watching them and learned that when they molt the male follows the female and fertilizes her eggs after a molt. Then she holds the eggs for about 3 weeks. And then releases the babies. They are little miniature fully formed shrimp which lacks colors. I don't know what color the blue ones will turn out to be, because I read that here are no true blue shrimp. I have them in their own tanks so the shrimplets do not become fish food.

I read about all the shrimp at http://www.petshrimp.com and the Marble Crayfish at: http://www.marbledcrayfish.com/

I purchased a Marbled Crayfish today. I am learning about their "cloning" way. I hope she likes all my pest snails!

New stuff

Red tail Green shrimp ..... I guess they are a color variety of the cherry shrimp? Well I was given some about a week ago. they are not green and they do not have a red tail, they do have a lot of small dots that are pinkish.

What I wanted was the neon green version of the cherry shrimp. But hey I am happy to have shrimp!

A friend of mine ordered in some Anentome helena snails, they are snails that eat just snails. Not fish or live plants!

They only breed when they are feeding on snails, they only lay one egg ever 10 days, wow now this seems like a great cure for snail population explosions!

Right now I have a tank of Long fin rosy barbs and they nearly wiped out the snails in their tank.

ABN Plecos

We have 4 broods of Dwarf Albino bristlenose plecos. We also have two broods of Black/brown Dwarf Bristlenose plecos. We have figured out that one female's genes throws off a black and brown with a small percentage of Albino, and the other female is all albino. We have only had one male pleco through all of this.

So now we have about 200 Dwarf Bristle nose plecos spread through 12 tanks. A video of the Dad is under the cut and here he was fanning his last brood. We took out the female so he can rest for a few weeks.

If anyone is wondering, all we did was buy 6 Dwarf Albino Bristlenose Plecos, housed and fed them (fish flake, algae wafers, earthworm sticks and zucchini (I bought it frozen from GFS) for a year, they matured and a male picked out a cave and invited females to the cave. They were in a 20 gallon high with rootwood and I moved them to a 55 because of what I read on the internet about how large some broods were. When the babies come out of the cave (14 days later) they take right to the algae wafers and zucchini.

Fish Room and future plans

I am in the process of changing my fish room to gear it more towards "Hobby" and away from "fish factory". I just personally feel that I cannot give the fish proper care and extra attention having 32 tanks. The tanks are not as good as they can be, they are plainer, no gravel and well I want my hobby back! Plus I would rather have fewer tanks and more things in them for the fish's happiness. So here is my current situation and then what I want the end results to be.

The tanks staying will have gravel and fully planted. The racks I use are called "Gorilla Racks" that I bought from Menards ad they are adjustable. They hold all my tanks no problem.

Awesome Fry Surprise!

I had a wonderful surprise this evening I have a hatching of Dwarf Albino Bristle nose plecos :) We bough them last July (they were very small) in hopes of them some day breeding. I thought that they might throw out some regular brown plecos but so far they are all albino.

All we did was provide root wood and caves and kept them fed on sliced frozen zucchini (I just float them in the water and they sank)earth worm sticks or brine shrimp sticks and fish flake. here is hoping the babies stay healthy!

A few years ago I had some brown hatch out, I am hoping the albino are not weaker?

My fish!

About two weeks ago, I posted a question about whether it would be okay to put my female betta in my 10-gallon aquarium with my platies and zebras. Thanks for the advice! Arwen is doing great in my 10-gallon. She hasn't nipped at the long-finned danios. I haven't noticed any fin damage on them anyway. I don't think she's very aggressive. Here are some pictures of my fish!

Single female betta in a community tank?

Hello everyone! I have a 10-gallon aquarium up and running that currently houses five platies (two male, three female) and three long-finned zebra danios. I'm thinking about adding my female betta to the tank as well. My female betta is currently in an unfiltered one-gallon tank. I try to change her water twice a week but sometimes forget. I'd like to consolidate to make it easier for me and I always keep up with the weekly water changes on my 10-gallon aquarium. Do you think she would be okay? I think she would be able to manage the filter current fine with her short fins, but I'm wondering how well she would get along with the platies and zebras.

"Salt" creep

Salt creep was always such a pain when I had saltwater tanks, but even with freshwater, there seems to be a continual nasty, white salt-like creep. What do you use to clean it off hoods or cords? I know the simplest (and most obvious) answer is just to wipe stuff down every day, but... I have slacked and now it's tenaciously clinging to parts of my 44 gallon's hood.

Help!

Help needed :(

Hi, I'm hoping someone here will be knowledgeable enough to be able to help me with my sick betta.

I have two bettas, bought from Petcetera (yeah, I know their fish suck). I'm a first-time fish owner, but I've done what I can to try to set up and maintain the two little 1/2 gallon tanks.

One of my fish, Lavi, had a bout of what I think was gillworm a couple of weeks ago. His face was all puffed up and he was having trouble breathing. He spent a day or so with his head buried in the rocks at the bottom, and when I realized how weird he looked I went to the store and bought these capsules of parasite controller. It has metronidizole, copper sulfate and trichlorfon in it, and it cured Lavi in a few days, no problem. He's all healthy and happy now, bubbling away.

So when Kanda, my other fish, started showing signs of similar distress, I thought it was the same thing. But I've been dosing him with the same stuff for five days now and he's only getting worse. The symptoms are not exactly the same, though. Here's what he's doing:

He's definitely showing signs of having trouble breathing through his gills. He has now wedged himself in the branches of the little banzai in his tank, so his head is touching the surface. But here's the weird thing - he has to wedge himself like that, because he can't float! The first sign that something was wrong was that he had to struggle, and struggle to swim upwards all the time. When he's not flailing all of his fins, he sinks right to the bottom, and clearly that's very tiring for the poor guy, because he's spent a lot of time just laying at the bottom of the tank, resting. He's very lethargic by now, and is showing disinterest in food, as well.

Does anyone have any idea what this might be - and more importantly, how I treat it before my fish dies? :( Thanks very much for any help you can give.

Cory Surprise

Sunday was my Fish Clubs auction (I am still tired!) there was over 1000 bags of fish. All species. There were lots of fish I have not ever seen before. That's what is so cool about these auctions. I was so busy running it that I never bid on any fish (which is good because I have enough) And lots of my gouramis found good homes, but I still have over 100. So after the auction I was packing up my stuff and I found a fish bag in my cooler. someone put fish in my cooler, 3 peppered corys. I have no clue as in who did this? They are cute little guys and they are in their own tank for now.

Opaline Gouramis

Well about the Opaline Gouramis, they are everywhere in my fish room, I gave 50 to a petstore and a bunch were brought to an auction and it still didn't make a dent in the population, so I have to separate the pair! I am running out of tanks. I actually thought I would never have this problem.

What can goldfish eat? (if you've run out of fish food)

Hi,
I'm posting a question here - I've run out of fish food & my !@#!?*!! pay has been stuffed up so I can'y re-stock until Monday.  So what can gold-fish eat other than bought fish-food?
My fish live in an out-door pond, & as it's very hot here in Australia at the moment; they're quiet hungry.  They are shubunkins and comets.
The BIG fellows are quite tame & can be hand-fed like koi as long as I'm the only they can see/hear, but all the little fellows (from last year's spawn) are still quite shy - they'll come up if they hear me talking & stay at the surface if I scatter food, but flee if my hand gets too close to the water.  They're pretty tough - outdoor all year in an un-filtered pond (bit green right now), breeding as they wish, and dodging my cats.

So, any suggestions for their dinner?

Can offer them: um, fresh lettuce; bread; tuna-fish; dried kitty food; um, the usual household staples.  Can they eat anything like that?
