Username Purge

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
I didn't want to lump this in with the last post, but we are starting a username purge immediately. This is partially to help with site load as we want to purge unused data from the system. We are also doing it because of the number of requests we have gotten. Keep an eye out for e-mails from us if your account is caught up in this so you can save it.

If you do not un-delete your account within two weeks and it is purged, your data will be gone forever!
  • Re: removal of people's content

I agree it is completely inappropriate to remove people's data for not having used the site of late. Of course people might not log in on their accounts, for a while, and YES, of course it can be one year. Their content still matters to them and potentially to those that have interacted with them.

You'll have to excuse me for dropping into the discussion. I am not a ij user, I have just come on the site thinking to make myself an account if I like the site (I can't decide where I want to host my next journals/blogs). I suppose I don't need to say which I strike from options.

I couldn't conceive to go back and not find my account, randomly because I didn't happen to work or play with that site for a while; to forget about a site for a while is simply something that always happens (to me, and potentially others, and yes, I realize it may not be everyone). In particular for roleplaying but not only, one may care about expressing themselves using a particular medium (lj, goodreads, ij, social networks, blog), then move on to other sites, then come back to their old interests. Same goes for email addresses: unless it happens that they currently use the email associated with a particular journal, of course they won't see any notification.

The simple thing that this, a 'purge', can happen, goes to show how uncertain it is, to have someone else in control of your own data. I realize it's a free service, but one which in reality matters to people - and by that, it costs their memories, writing games, whatever they gave time for.

On a constructive note: there are always solutions to overloading of a site, without needing to lose data or intently purge data. At the very least (in the worst case scenario), one can split the database(s) and keep backups online of everything that isn't on the live active site. An archive site would also be less demanding in resources, if the problems stem from querying large amounts of data. Since I don't know exactly what the problems are (I'm only relying on this thread at this time), I won't continue with suggestions. It's certain there are solutions nevertheless, before just 'purging' people's content.
Speaking of which, I wonder how clear it is, when one signs up, that their content can be purged in case the circumstances of their life change.

I will apologize in case my post sounds harsh. Count it or discount it at your will.
