We have determined that we need an additional 2 web servers. This is going to need an upfront cost and some additional cash for boosting the reserves.

What we are going to do is start a sale on both regular accounts and we are going to be selling Permanently Insane accounts immediately. We will stop the sale once we have raised the needed funds. I will give 48 hours notice before stopping the sale.

The sale prices are going to be 20% off our regular low prices.

    I like how you're motivating users to buy paid/permanent accounts, but reading comments in your previous post I think that in offering frequent permanently insane account sales you are hurting the chance to bring in reoccurring revenue. Yes, it a large amount of cash in the short term but in the large term it's going to run out. IJ is supported by users and since there isn't a large active base like LJ, we aren't going to be able to bring in that type of money.

    I'd like to suggest that maybe offer some other type of deals or even tell the users a rough estimate how much the new servers cost and what monthly fees IJ incurs. You're already promoting paid accounts with a discount. Paid accounts for a year are what $25? Maybe temporarily increase the price to $30 and throw in the gift of extra user pictures for six months? OR make it $35 and a year of extra pictures. I dunno this are just suggestions off the top of my head.

      We are aware of this, but with the nature of the site, it is only a temporary hit on recurring revenue. We have been trying to reduce the amount of times we put these items on sale, and are only using it for raising capital when desperately needed.

      I think you have a point, but my sense is that IJ has a much larger roleplaying population than LJ and a lot of people (like me!) are willing to put money out on paid accounts but not insane ones. So that's a plus! :)

      I may be wrong but when you go to buy a paid account, (by clicking on "upgrade account" under "site") there is an option for who you want to receive the extra userpics i.e yourself or another account or asylum.

      I think you or the person getting the permanant extra userpics has to have a permanent account already or be buying one to qualify for buying permanant extra userpics too.

    Thank you for the information; it is good to see you adding additional servers.

    I would like to ask what the status of being able to receive email on hotmail accounts; I have not been able to receive tracking notifications or reply notifications an any of my IJ accounts (including my paid one) since December.

    With the frequent outages and the abovementioned issue with notifs, it's very difficult for me to justify buying a paid or permanent account at this time.

      Squeaky has said repeatedly that he's done everything he can on his end to try to fix the Hotmail problem, and that all he can suggest at this point is that Hotmail users complain directly to Hotmail. There's only so much you can do with an email provider that flags your emails incorrectly. I don't really think it's fair to blame him for that when you could just switch email providers (or try a Gmail-to-Hotmail forwarding scheme).

      Also, I really want to know what these 'frequent outages' are. There's scheduled downtime in the wee hours of the morning - what else are you referring to? I haven't seen the site down for any length of time at other times in the day.

        There's constant outages all the time. Just a few days ago the site was down for like four hours in the middle of the day.

            "Constant" as in, it happens very, very often. I use the site several times a day, every day of the week. And the site loads nothing but a white screen very frequently.

            This announcement talks about gaining two new servers. I hope that will ease, if not stop, the instances when the site does not load.

            As for the notifications, the last mention of it I saw was back in March, and the entry simply said they knew there was an issue. No mention of a resolution or a suggestion was given. Since December, I have been using gmail to receive my notifications, but the way gmail works makes it difficult to follow many comments at once. I will use your suggestion of forwarding emails to hotmail from gmail.

            It seems you were frustrated with my comments, and I would ask if you are an admin on the site; if you are, I'm sorry you're frustrated, but as a customer, my concerns are valid.

            It was just an example. I'm on a lot too, and it seems to go down really frequently for me. A lot of other people have reported seeing the same problem, not sure why you're not having them but you should consider yourself lucky.

    this account isn't set to expire until 5/27. if i buy it now, do i get six months from that expiration date or six months from today?

      Buying more paid time? If you do, it will always add on whatever amount you buy onto the end of what you already have, so your six months would be up on November 27th. If you were to buy a year, it would then take your paid time expiration date to 5/27/2011. Hope that makes sense.

    A Permanently Insane account has all the features of a Self-committed account with the addition of being able to list up upload up to 300 user pictures.

    I want to purchase more user pics, is there a package that has more than the 300 by any chance? Just wonderin'! Ty

      You can get up to 400 by adding "extra userpics - 12/6 months" to a regular paid account, I believe, and up to 500 by adding "permanent extra user pics" to a permanent account. There's also a 5,000 icons deal for, like, $75-100 or something, called "insane userpics" or the like, but I'm not sure if that's offered all the time. It's not available right now.

    Hey, squeaky! I should probably know this (and think I did at one point) but if someone has a subscribed account and they buy a permanent one, how do they go about moving the paid time they had left on that account to another journal? Is it just a matter of opening a support request?

    How does paid time work with asylums? If the maintainer journal is permanent, does this apply to asylums they maintain (polls, ads, etc.)? If an asylum requires its own paid time, must the maintaining journal also be paid?

      They are mutually exclusive. I.E. the maintainers paid status does not go to the asylum. And the asylum does not require the maintainer to have paid status.
