Also we have uploaded a new alternate sitescheme, it is a black and white theme (sans-tweak and tweak-says for those that don't like him). It is called Monodramatic, it, too, is available in dropdown and sidebar options.

You can select any of the available siteschemes at http://www.insanejournal.com/manage/settings/
  • All of them are nice, and I really like the colors on the "Dramatics", but the dropdown can be a problem for brand new users (like 80 year old grandma who wants to read grandkid's blog), so the sidebar is a better default option.

And while the colors are nice, the "worksafe" is a bit easier on the eyes.
    • And dropdowns are a real pain for those of us who like multi-tabbed browsing; I use sidebars so I can leave my main page open, and open everything else in a new tab. The dropdowns don't allow that.
      • Actually the way the dropdowns were done in the new styles, they allow middle and right clicking, so you can use them with tabs in firefox!
      • I use Dramatic-Dropdown now and you certainly can open in new tab. I live by my middle mouse button.
        • Good to know! Glad that works.

(I'll stick to sidebars; I have enough trouble remembering what the various parts are called when I have the words on a list in front of me. And dropdowns are not as friendly to dialup, which I use at home.)

But I'm very happy to know that, whichever version wins, I won't feel horribly constrained if I have to navigate the site without logging in.
    • Agreed. I picked dramatic 'cause I think it sets the site apart a little better, but either of the sidebar options is good. Drop-downs can be a problem for some people to navigate (if they have a mouse that jumps around, which I did for a while, for example), and may not be intuitively obvious to "newcomers".
