Purging Old Inactive Accounts
I am starting the process to purge old inactive accounts immediatly. We are defining inactive accounts as accounts who have not had any activity in the past 2 years.

In the first phase I am going to immediately set the status of any inactive accounts who are not validated to deleted. This will give the account owners a period of two weeks to log in and set the accounts back to active. Since these accounts are not validated we do not have a reliable email address to contact the account owner with.

The second part of the first phase will involve emailing any validated but inactive accounts and warning them that their accounts will be set to deleted status in two weeks.

The second phase will occur in two weeks. The first part will be when the deleted accounts are automatically purged and the second part will be to set the status of any inactive but validated accounts to deleted.

The third phase will take place two weeks after phase 2 when the phase 2 deleted accounts are automatically purged by the system.

We will NOT include Self-Committed[paid] or Permanently Insane accounts in the account purge.

What this means is that when an account is purged, it is immediately available for use by an existing account via the use of a rename token. Rename tokens are available in the InsaneJournal Store for $5. If you have any questions or concerns with this process, please raise them in the comments to this post.

Amazing! Buying a rename token for my husband so he can get a new username when this happens. Thanks so much. ♥

if we have an old account, would it help speed up the process if we deleted them ourselves?

by the way, 5 dollar rename tokens are love.

The process sounds fine to me - glad for the notice! I just had a few questions: Will purged usernames only be available through rename tokens, or will they be available for use with brand new accounts, too? Will a list of recently purged accounts be viewable anywhere?

is there any way we can reserve a username that might be purged?

Sounds good!

I'll delete some names, cause I'm guilty of having inactive accounts. :(

Does activity include comments posted to another user's account or asylum, or is it only journal entries? As an example, would an account be considered active if it has no journal entries but has made five comments elsewhere?

i have an account that i use for myself only. i recently got it but the only entry i made is private. it's kind of my own little corner to vent in. would that be deleted since it has no friends added and is completely private, or are inactive accounts ones with no posts whatsoever?

first, thank you for doing such an incredible job with this site. i have pretty much moved over here for good now and i plan on making this a permanent account asap. it's nice to see a maintainer who really knows what he's doing and cares.

second, i have a feeling the answer to this will be no...but i was wondering if there might be a way to maybe reserve inactive usernames so that when they are purged we will be able to get them before someone else snags them up?

thanks so much for running a reliable site and keeping us constantly informed!

Great idea! That way more new folks can join the insanity without eating up space! I have quite a few accounts on some message boards that I wish would get deleted0 (forgotten the passwords, etc.).

How will asylums be handled, out of curiosity? They don't get activation emails, the way regular accounts do. Will their deletion be tied to the deletion of their maintainers or will it be handled in a different manner at another time?

Reading some of the other comments? Thank you for defining what active meant. I created quite a few journals when I came over here from GJ for gaming purposes but haven't got them ALL going yet. :)

A PURGE. Wow, haven't seen one of those in forever and a day!

Question you awesome maintainer you. :)

Once a journal is deleted can we request the rename token right away and just wait to see if the journal is reclaimed or do we definitely have to wait the 14 days until it's purged? Also, you say in the last two years.. and that's 2006, are you going all the way back to 2003? Because that's a year that one of the journals I want is from.

Could you update the FAQ page on deleted journals, the one that says "InsaneJournal does not delete accounts for inactivity"?

by inactive for the past two years do you mean accounts that have been recently created that have yet to be used, or just ones that had been created two years ago that are inactive?

I don't say this to everyone, I love you. So so much.

Now I can just cross my fingers and hope that it will become purged. I mean, not like they ever used it or the 80+ other accounts they had.

Just a thought, perhaps a list like LJ of purged accounts?

i got an email from an old account i forgot i had saying the password to it might have been sent out to 15 different emails... um...?

InsaneJournal experienced an error sending out the passwords earlier today.

Your password may have been sent to approximatly 15 different email addresses.
We sincerly apologize for this. If your password was reset, the orginal email
address on the account can reset the password. This email only included inactive accounts

that doesnt make me feel really secure or anything, yeah you can change the password but some of us use the same password for several sites, not just one journaling site.
