Overnight errors

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
It seems some of you ran into some errors with the site overnight. That was due tot he fact that I was running the weekly database backup. THe processes seems to lock the database up pretty hard while it runs. Sorry about that. I will try to find a better way to do this that won't cause such an interruption in the future.
  • I'm not sure if this is the correct place to report this, but a couple of entries in our RPG have lost their comments recently (as in, during the past 10 minutes). The first had 5 comments and the second had 3, and now they're all gone. I wouldn't worry about this so much except something similar was the harbinger of the problems that are now so prevalent on GJ, and it scares me, since we just moved here to get away from that kind of stuff. *bites nails*
    • IJ's had problems with comment-rot for a while, and they should be fixed with the next software upgrade (I remember this happening at LJ, too). The upgrade should hopefully happen soon; it just keeps getting delayed by other adjustments that have to be made to accommodate the growing number of users. My personal recommendation is to turn on/keep all email notifications of comments to a post, including your own comments, so that if something vanishes you can at least restore/reconstruct it later. And hopefully the upgrade will be able to get off the ground soon. :)
      • Thanks. I'll pass that on. :-)
      • Thanks for that info. I wasn't sure if a solution was in the works or not. That's a relief :)
      • Thanks for this tip! I was wondering how to combat this.
