Gen; The hated, the loved, and the heartbreaking.
Hello again. I thought I'd get this show on the road. I'm going to share with the comm which characters I absolutely loathe, the ones I absolutely adore, and the ones who have broken me. Some Spoilers.
The Hated
Muraki (Yami no Matsuei): Arguably the most despicable character in all of anime. He feels no remorse and no regret for his evil deeds. Even if I didn’t love Hisoka so very very much, I’d still hate his perfectly pristine-looking self. Rape and murder are acts he commits as easily as other people eat or breathe. He's a consummate user and will do literally anything to achieve his ends--and enjoy every last minute of his horrible transgressions. He doesn't possess a single ounce of humanity, and I so enjoy hating him for it because he doesn't have a single redeeming quality to make me feel guilty about doing so.
Knives (Trigun): Like Muraki, Knives doesn't possess an ounce of anything humane...then again, he isn't human. He does, however, have a somewhat legitimate reason for being so twisted. I'd be pretty angry if my siblings were being used for power and then disgarded without a thought when they'd been used up. So I don't hate him for wanting to wipe out all humans. What I do passionately hate him for is what he's done to his brother. Vash is the sweetest, most gentle person and Knives toys with his emotions like they're a joke. He has committed mass murder in front of him just to see Vash's reaction. Since I hate anyone who purposely makes my beloved Vash cry, Knives easily makes this list.
Sakurazuka Seishiro (Tokyo Babylon and X/1999): This bastard...I cannot love Subaru as much as I do and not have an intense, burning hatred for this man. He's also the only one whom my hatred of (even though I hope he's gone to hell and never knows a second of joy) will not keep me from slashing him with his tormentee every chance I get... (I iz whoribull pursen)
Yagami Light (Death Note): He drew me to Death Note with his looks then repulsed me with his utter heartlessness. He’s a sociopath. So calculating, and so convinced of his own righteousness that it’s sickening, because I don’t believe it’s madness. He’s cold, conniving, and clever. I’m totally convinced that he’s one of those kids who picked the limbs off of Daddy Long Legs just to watch them suffer. But most of all, he cannot be forgiven for what he did to L and Mello. I hope he wet the bed when he was little.
The Loved:
Uzumaki Naruto (Naruto): This brash and sassy wannabe ninja captured my heart the moment he appeared in American Shonen Jump and hasn't let it go since. His courage, his determination, and his sense of honor are traits to be admired. And did I mention he's blond, blue-eyed, and adorable? He almost ended up in the "heartbreaking" category for all the shit he's had to deal with in his life, but he's risen above that admirably. While he no longer breaks my heart, he still has a very special place within it.
Monkey D. Luffy (One Piece): Ah this kid. He can make me breathless with laughter and breathless with awe on the same page. He’s gonna be pirate king and nobody, I mean nobody can tell him otherwise. He treats his friends like family and his enemies like nuisances. He isn’t afraid to tell the truth and does, even if it’s insulting. He is the most loved main character in all of shounen media because there is, literally, nothing not to like about him. He’s loud, playful, loving, charismatic, and blunt, but rarely crosses over the line into arrogant or obnoxious. Everyone he encounters is better for having met him. Each time he says “nakama” like it’s the only word that’s really important to him, I squee a little, even if only inside. No, he doesn’t tug on my heartstrings in the usual way, but his unwavering faith in himself and those he loves make me want to cuddle him and protect him from everything that might hurt him in any way.
Wolfram von Bielefeld (Kyou Kara Maou): I loved him before I knew him, when I first saw a picture somewhere on the internet. He was just too damn pretty for me not to. His irreverence, arrogance, and childishness when I did finally watch the show, simply endeared him to me further. I have such a weakness for “Brat Prince” characters. Then came the nightgown. This cemented my adoration for him forever. It was even better when began to mature, and his heart bloomed to match his looks. He’s grown so far beyond his original pettiness that he’s now simply breathtaking all around. He’s a devoted (if not exactly orthodox) fiancé, a loving father, a loyal soldier, and a genuinely good person, once one gets beyond his prickly outer shell. He doesn’t love easily, but when he does it’s with his whole heart. (Now if only his betrothed would wise up and notice all his good qualities…)
Trunks Briefs (Dragonball Z) He was my first real anime love—his future form, that is. But I love both incarnations, for totally separate reasons. Mirai (future) Trunks is polite, soft-spoken, adorably eager to please, and absolutely beautiful (Yes, I said a DBZ character is beautiful, xP). He’s not quite as disgustingly buff as some of the other characters, but what really captured me were his eyes and hair: bright blue and a soft, pretty shade of lavender, respectively. There was something so soft about him, and I really miss him tremendously. (Do you hear that? It’s the sound of rusty, dusty fic-muse cogs beginning to turn after a year-long state of disrepair.) As for present Trunks: he’s rude (like his daddy), bossy (like his mommy), mouthy, self-centered, and…still just as pretty, only now as a kid (Uh, I don’t count GT because it ain’t canon and also it’s dumb). Seriously, I love them both to death. And did I mention that present Trunks calls Goten “chibi”? Isn’t that just the cutest thing ever?
The Heartbreaking:
Edward Elric (Full Metal Alchemist): This kid just cannot catch a break. Half the time I was so frustrated on his behalf and the other half I was sobbing into my pillow, praying and asking “For the love of god, will someone please take away this soul sucking pain already?” And I didn’t even watch the whole show! His unwavering determination to do right by his brother is as painful as it is humbling. I don’t know many people who would sacrifice so much of themselves for the sake of another person, no matter how much they loved him or her.
Tokito (Wild Adapter): Tokito is one of those characters who snuck up on me, swung a Louisville Slugger at my heart for all he was worth and I’m still picking up the pieces. I really wasn’t expecting to be broken so thoroughly. The poor kid has had a hard life, except no one knows, exactly, what happened. It is generally believed, though, that he was used for drug experimentation. His memories are gone, but his terror still remains; eating at him and succeeding in gnawing away his soul because he doesn’t know what’s made him this way. Thank god for Kubota, the only one who has successfully tamed that beast called ‘fear’ and wormed his way into Tokito-chan’s lonely heart. (on with the smex now plzthx!)
Kuropica (Hunter x Hunter): Alright, so I don’t even really know this one very well, but what I’ve read and watched has already left me with that hurty, “come to mama and let me protect you forever and ever” feeling. He’s all alone in the world, his clan having been massacred for no other reason than rich old farts desire to collect their unique eyes. He’s very withdrawn and introverted, and shies away from all types of human contact like he’s afraid of it. And I suppose he is. I think it would be terribly difficult to allow one’s self to become close to others after such a trauma, and he’s just so pretty…dammit, I’ve just talked myself into watching it. I don’t particularly want to get into this show, because I have a whole mess of other anime to serve my “fighting, fighting, and more awesome, unrealistic fighting” craving, but…I can’t ignore Kuropica. There isn’t anyone as pretty as him in those other shows. (And quite apart from the way he breaks my heart so perfectly…I want to slash him--hard, and I can’t do that if I don’t know the ins and outs of his interactions.)
And last but certainly not least; Kurosaki Hisoka (Yami no Matsuei): This is the character who has left me a weeping, inconsolable mess more than once. More than twenty times, even. Ignored and despised by his parents since he was a child for a power that should have been nurtured; raped and cursed to die a long, agonizing death at 14; dead and a bringer of death at 16. I’m not even going to hesitate to say that he is the most tragic character I’ve ever encountered in my long history with anime and manga. And he’s beautiful. So beautiful, he hurts to look at. Everything about this boy just completely shatters me. And he’s still so strong in spite of it all. He never lets what he’s gone through weaken him. Kurosaki Hisoka owns my heart—all the broken pieces of it—and I give it gladly. (Yes, I’m melodramatic, but wasn’t that apparent in the beginning?)
M’kay, so those are the big ones, though there are plenty others—especially in that last category. There isn’t anything I love more than a character who can break my soft, mushy heart.
What do you think? Do you agree with any of mine? Who are the characters you hate? Love? Leave you heartbroken? I look forward to your answers.
