The castrati were male sopranos, mezzo-sopranos, altos and contraltos that were first created by the Catholic church in the 16th century. They reached their height of popularity in the 17th and 18th centuries before going out like so many beautiful candles, the public adoration turning to pity, morbid curiosity, or disgust. This asylum is for those of us in the modern day who still admire these earthly angels.
