A/N: Angel is leaving town...can Spike get to him in time?
“Innocence, it’s so frail – taken away by the act of cruelty; turning the angel into prey.
He had no right, to commit this crime – he’s hunted the angel , Angel spread his wings to fly, far away,to run from the past - to finally be: safe.”
~Katja aka katsa_db_lover~
The sound of an approaching train woke him up – he’d been wandering around the town for a while, finally settling to sleep on one of the benches at the train station. Angel had made up his mind – no more Gerard, no more humiliations and constant fear of what would be coming next. The decision hadn’t been easy though. Angel would miss Spike, who had become his dear friend among other things, which he didn’t allow himself to think about right now. It would only make the leaving harder. He wanted out of this town, and if possible, to start a new life somewhere and forget about all that had happened here, except Spike. He would always remember ‘his’ Spike.
He’d been able to save up some money during the summer, so there was enough for a ticket and to buy some food. Angel had no clue where he would be living or where he was going. The only thing he knew for sure was that he wanted to get away. Gathering his things, he stepped forward, glancing nervously around him to be sure he hadn’t been followed. The station was packed full with people, some of them looking at him with curious expressions on their faces, thinking probably that he was a kid who was about to go and see his grandparents or something – if they only knew, they wouldn’t want to look at him after that – he was dirty, and not worthy of any kind of love or affection.
Spike didn’t waste any time: he grabbed his duster and headed straight out of the door. The weather was getting even worse than earlier - it was raining heavily; making it difficult to spot a particular person. He didn’t know where to look, but took off anyway; hoping to get there before it would be too late. As he was roaming the town, checking every art gallery, museum and even the mall, he suddenly spotted a tall, dark figure standing at the train station, looking awfully much like ‘his’ Angel. Spike thought he looked somehow ‘beaten’ – like he didn’t believe there was anything for him to look forward to. Angel was just a shadow of his former self – all this he could see from a distance. It hurt Spike more than anything else he’d seen before – to witness this total breakdown of a boy he loved. ‘How can I help him? ..oh god...please, let it not be too late...I can’t loose him...I love him’ Spike thought; startled by his own thoughts – it really was love this time, and bloody’ell if he wouldn’t fight for it!
Finally the platform was emptying, and Angel could step into the train. He was carrying only his worn out duffel bag, and one middle sized suitcase. He didn’t dare to take anything else with him as he had not bought the stuff himself – what if Gerard would demand him to pay it all back? It was easier just to let the stuff go – it wasn’t like it meant anything to him anyway – nothing from Gerard did – only thing he ever got from the man he called ‘dad’, was pain, and humiliation. One thing he took with him though, was the tiny pendant which his mother had left for him. It was a little heart, with picture of mom inside. Tears ran down Angel’s face as he stared the picture – he missed his mom very much, and would have given anything to see her again. And who knew, maybe he would, soon.
Angel snapped back from his thoughts when the train was already moving. He’d been just standing at the middle of the aisle, forgetting to take his place. Quickly he looked up the right number and sat down on his place before people would start asking questions. Turned out that the guy sitting next to him was a very intrusive dude ,named Jason. Angel tried to pretend he was sleeping so he would drop the harrassment, but the oaf had no intention of leaving him alone. Jason took great pleasure from resting his hand on Angel’s thigh on more than few occasions, and leaning into his personal space with ‘friendly’ manner. ‘ Oh god...let this be a short trip’ he sighed inwardly; trying to avoid Jason’s attempts to get ‘better acquainted’, as he had put it. Angel had no desire of getting to know him.
Angel was stepping into the train, and Spike ran faster than ever before. He reached the platform just in time to bounce on the train as it was starting to move – there was no way he would let Angel get away like that, not without a fight. By the time he’d got himself safely inside, Angel had disappeared from his view once more.
“Dammit! Where did you go,luv?” Spike mumbled. He would have to search the whole train before it would reach its destination. Spike was getting frustrated and also extremely angry. He would bloody well kill Gerard when he got back home, the guy was Angel’s father for crying out loud! What kind of father would do this to his own son? He just couldn’t sit back and watch Angel being slowly distroyed – no fuckin’ way! He would make Angel better again no matter what. He didn’t even mind hurting himself in the process – only thing he could think about was making ‘his’ Angel happy, and taking him away from all this, somewhere safe, so he could start again, and Spike would go with him. Of course he’d let his mom know somehow, and warn her about Gerard – better yet, he would tell her everything, and they would lock Gerard away for good. Spike realised these kind of thoughts were still far from happening though. First he had to find Angel, and try to convince him to let Spike help. He had to make Angel see, that only one to blame here was Gerard, not Angel, and that Angel was more worthy of love than anyone Spike had known. He understood that Angel must feel like he’s dirty, and that no one would ever want to touch him again. Spike knew this from the stuff he’d read from internet, and from documents they showed on telly, that those kind of thoughts were common among abused children.
