Allura, Crusader of the Zakharem faith, crouched down upon the desert sands. The sand was red, and churned like butter. A battle, no, a slaughter had taken place here. Remnants of once living beings scattered the field of red. Around them the wind billowed, blowing sand in every which direction.

Beneath her plate armor, the blonde woman sweated profusely. It caused her to feel as dirty and grimy as a street begger, and the sand that was somehow finding it's way through the cracks of her armor did not help how she felt at all. Whatever had happened here, there were trails of blood leading away from here.

"Shall we follow?" she looked up and asked, smirking behind her helm, for it was a rhetorical question. Of course they would follow.

"It is uncomfortable now?"

Her apprentice made little sense. This was the one who would assume and carry on her name after she fell in battle? Zakharum help them.

"What is it?" she asked when she heard the 'hmm'. "We are not lost."

"More like...unsettling."

Ahayla had her reasons. She was sure Allura would find out eventually soon too. There was only so long that she would keep it from her sister.

"I was contemplating a bow..." She said to Allura, catching up with her stride eventually. Sometimes her sister walked faster because her legs were long that Ahayla would have to walk even faster to compensate.

"Are we lost?" Was Allura stating that to reassure her because Allura had lost the way...or? "No...we are head ed in the right direction, I believe." She answered immediately. For some reason, Ahayla had an amazing sense of direction.

Grunting an acknowledgement, there was nothing about what they did that wasn't unsettling. Being a Crusader was a gory, gruesome calling. If Ahayla did not want this life, then she would not be here.

"Crusaders do not fight with a bow. Our traditional weapon is the flail," she reminded her apprentice. "If a bow suits you more, perhaps the calling of a demon hunter would suit you more?" she suggested without any malice.

Trudging through the desert, Allura was back to slowly cooking in her armor. How she hated deserts and warm places. Reassured that they were going the right way by her apprentice, there was no need to stay more.

"When we return, do not speak of what happened. With no survivors and any evidence burned by the fire, they shall be left guessing as to what happened."

Ahayla frowned slightly. Oh well...she could give it a thought, but she had been doing this for a while and changing suddenly...what would that say about her?

Ahayla kept walking with Allura, hoping to see a city looming ahead soon. They were likely to be in a desert city...unless the crossed the mountains. Which would be a nice change in sceneary!

"I will not..." Hell, she didn't even want to remember.

It would be hours before they reached the city. Hopefully the sun went down soon so it cooled off. A change of scenery would be much better. A cooler climate at least.

"I suppose I should ask...when we return to the city, do you have any other demands that need to be met?"

Allura didn't want any other surprises laid upon her by her increasingly difficult apprentice. They were going to have little coin to spend when they reached the city, so she hoped it would not be any need to be met that was costly.

"A bath? And food..." Ahayla raised an eyebrow. Then again, those were just the normal things that they would need. She didn't think there was anything else she really needed...

"I am certain those are the only things I will need." Sword. Sleep. Food. Bathe. Yes, that was a good list.

She didn't want to take her helmet off, but she did. Taking it off meanth exposure to the sun and fatigue faster...but then again, her head would be cooler. And lighter. Ahayla was not enjoying this walk now.

"A bath will be expensive..."

Water was a precious commodity in a desert city. Noticing her apprentice take her helmet off, she was beginning to suspect that Ahayla lacked the stamina to become a Crusader.

"Perhaps you should have bathed in the oasis?" she teased. "You are making this old woman look good."

Ahayla finally did decide on taking off her helmet.

"It can wait then." Ahayla said, frowning deeply. Rubbing her forehead, ugh...gauntlets. Shaking her head again, she looked at Allura.

"I did not want to contaimnate the only source of drinking water a hapless wandered may have in the future. Thye do not need to be drinking my sweat..." Ahayla answered, finding the idea to be horrid. And now that she thought about it...what if they were drinking someelses sweat!

"We can see how much it will cost. Likely it will cost less if we take one together."

There was no way that she was going to pass on a bath if Ahayla was going to have one! Allura didn't want to be the only smelly one...

"Your sweat is a little sexy," she teased, hoping to distract her sister from thinking about the water in the oasis too much.

It wasn't like it was well water...

"If we have a bath in the city, it is your turn to wash my back since I nicely washed your's at the oasis."

Nodding, she would be grateful for a bath.

Wrinkling her nose as Allura said her sweat was sexy, she had half a mind to bop her sister on the head for being so weird sometimes...but she didn't. She shook her head, her hair sticking to her sweaty face.

"Pouring water down the back of my armor doesn't count as washing my back." Ahayla pointed out, only speaking the truth. Cracking a half smile, she knew her sister would joke about her inability to take a joke.

"I am quite certain it does. Is that not what washing one's back consists of? Pouring water down it?"

Holding her shield up, she held it over her apprentice's head. It provided some shade for the brunette, at least. Otherwise the fair-skinned girl was going to burn.

"You take things too seriously, Ahayla. Of course we will be washing each other's backs. I was merely joking."

Ahayla rolled her eyes slightly, already knowing her sister was going to try to find loop holes to make a point. She knew it wasn't just that to washing ones back. And que the inability to joke talk!

"I know."

Ahayla was grateful for the shade. Biting her bottom lip, she was glad her sister was tall enough to provide shade.

It didn't seem to take long before the muscles in her left arm were protesting having to hold the heavy shield up. Stubborn as she was, Allura only gritted her teeth, refusing to lower the shield. Ahayla was more precious to her than her comfort. As they walked, she studied their surroundings cynically.

"Deserts are rather boring, aren't they," she remarked, after which she licked her dried and cracking lips. "Nothing to see or do. No desserts in sight."

She was making less sense, she knew, but it was hard to think straight in this heat. The desert went on and on for seemingly forever. She didn't want to die out here with Ahayla. Only one of them should die, and that should be Allura. Ahayla as her apprentice needed to live on.

"Where should we go once we are done in the city?"

Ahayla bit her bottom lip, luckily it wasn't cracked like Allura.

"There is nothing but sand in the desert...and scorpions..."

What else should she say?

"Find a town near the woods to take a break in? Where it will not be too hot?"

"Scorpions? Better than spiders," she remarked warily.

Still, scorpions were rather scary. They crunched and splattered just like spiders when stepped on, though. Nothing to be too concerned about. Unless they got bigger...

"Perhaps one with a pond or lake we can take a swim in? I miss racing you."

Smiling at the childhood memory, she tried to ignore the blinding sun streaming through her helm's visor. Something actually came into view besides sand. A wrecked wagon, left to rot in the desert lay before them. She studied it with passing interest as they eventually walked past it. It was a sign of civilization at least, and it had been pointed in the direction they were going.

"I wonder how cold a bath they offer?"

"They are related to spiders..."

Ahayla shrugged, though it wasn't something her sister had to know. They only thing that kept scorpions and spiders apart was their stinger.

"Maybe the town will have a lake. We can fish too."

She liked the idea of chilling somewhere nice.

"ANd they probably don't have ice cubes for their baths..."

"Eww. Nasty."

Allura shuddered in disgust. Bugs were so gross. Of course demons were just as nasty. All bloated and corrupted...

"What would we do with the fish? You know I don't like to eat fishy things."

Sweet or fruity things were more her fare. Or even just bread and water, simple food for a crusader. Breathing through her mouth now, she was cooking in her armor, she was certain of it. The blonde hoped the shade she was making was helping the brunette.

"Ice cubes for a bath? What if they froze to us?" she asked, horrified. "I don't think they have any ice in a desert city. Would you really want to take a ice cube bath?"

"Eat it..." That's generally what one did when they fished. Plus, they could salt and dry some for the road, as they would need something to eat on the occasion.

"Or give it to a family that needs it." They didn't have to take all the fish, of course.

Shaking her head, she grabbed her sheild. "Shade you're self, you're turning really red." She told her sister, lifting her own shield to shade herself.

"Well, considering you might be a little too warm for that, I don't think they would adhere to you."

"The second option sounds more acceptable."

They finally came upon a well traveled path through the sand. Many prints pocked the sand, headed in a angled direction ahead of them. Allura altered the direction she was walking to match the path.

"I can shade you. My helmet is protecting me from the sun," she grumbled.

Shifting her shield to complement her sister's shield, Ahayla would be even more shaded now. Grumbling incoherently, the looming walls of the city rose ahead of them, nestled between the towering cliffs of the canyon it is situated within.

"Almost there," she reassured her apprentice.

"I can see that." Ahayla answered, nodding slightly.

Of course she could see the city looming ahead of them, but she wasn't going to add anymore to her statement. Ahayla had her helmet hanging by the straps to her belt, she wasn't going to hold it anymore.

"So, since we aren't going to rest immediately, are we going to split up to figure out what happened? DO I have a specific task?"

"Splitting up would work best. I shall find us a bath house, and you shall find us an inn. While we are doing that we shall keep our eyes and ears open for anything unusual. After we have completed our tasks we shall meet back at the gate here and go to the bath house together."

It was a good plan. They could prepare to relax while beginning their investigation. They needed leads to go on first, anyways. It was a large city.

"Do you have enough coin to rent us rooms?"

"Okay."

Listening to the plan, the younger girl kept walking with Allura the distance it would take.

"Can I leave my armor at the room when I come to meet up with you again?" She asked. It would feel nice not to have all that weight on her.

"That would be a bad idea. We know that there are demons in this city. We could be attacked at anytime."

Even in the bath house when they would be naked. But Allura wasn't going to dwell on that. Arriving at the city gate, they passed through the checkpoint of the city guard without difficulty. Once inside, she stopped and gave Ahayla a salute.

"Be safe. I shall see you here again, soon."

Seems she was keeping it on...which sucked.

Saluting the older woman, she went off her own way. There was a lot to see in this city as she walked down the street. For a desert city, it certainly was lively.

Walking jnto the inn, she went to the counter to pay the innkeeper for a room. It didnt take too long...

Being quite picky about bathing establishments, Allura had to lower her standards due to their location and price range. She eventually found one with both guaranteed privacy and cool water. They advertised the coldest water in the city, but the crusader was quite certain that was a advertising gimmick. She had seen it everywhere else she had gone.

Reserving one of their private baths, she made her way back to the gate. Along the way she listened for any tidbits of passing information. There was much talk of nobles missing from the public eye. Rumors were of assassins or a poisoned batch of exotic food. Not once did she hear mention of any demons. Taking her time, she expected to see Ahayla waiting for her.
