About: | This journal exists for one purpose: to explain why the term 'alter', as used for members of multiple systems, is often a bad term. The term 'alter' is short for 'alternate personality', which members of multiple systems are seen as according to the psychiatric model. Alternate is defined in the Concise Oxford English Dictionary as: alternate - verb occur or do in turn repeatedly. Øchange repeatedly between two contrasting conditions. - adjective 1 every other. Ø (of two things) each following and succeeded by the other in a regular pattern. Ø Botany (of leaves or shoots) placed alternately on the two sides of the stem. 2 chiefly North American another term for alternative. - noun North American a deputy or substitute. Something that is alternate is one of two; it comes from the Latin word 'alter', which means the other of two. Not fifteen, not thirty. You cannot, technically, have nineteen alters. You can have ONE and a 'host'. NOT THIRTY ALTERS. It is also demeaning to some plural groups because it is associated with the psychiatric model, which may not suit them, and implies that there is an original person, and everyone else is of lesser status. | ||||||||||
