Girls' Night Out (backdated)
WHO: Pansy Parkinson, Tracey Davis, Millicent Bulstrode (and any other of their female classmates who care to join up)
WHERE: Leaky Cauldron
WHEN: Tuesday, January 29, 2000
RATING: low
STATUS: Started

Pansy left work feeling much happier about things than she had since the first of the year. Finally, a get together that hopefully didn't revolve around who was pairing up with whom for the bloody marriage decree. She changed out of her work robes into a fitted blouse and long skirt in deep forest green. Nothing too fancy, just not something that screamed she'd just come from the Ministry offices.

She headed into the Leaky Cauldron and looked around for any signs of Millicent or Tracey. Having not found her friends, she settled for an empty booth to wait. The waitress came by, and Pansy ordered a firewhiskey.

Watching the door, but not overly obviously, Pansy thought about how much things had changed in so little time. Well, it was all fine. Tonight would be good.

Tracey was in far better spirits tonight than she had been all week. For their girls' night out, she dressed herself rather simply, in a plain, knee-length black skirt, a long-sleeved white shirt and a pair of high heels. She threw her purse over her shoulder before heading out the door to the Leaky Cauldron.

Upon her arrival, she looked around carefully for her friends. She didn't spot Millicent, but her eyes caught Pansy in a booth. She made her way over carefully, before sitting down across from her friend. "Pansy, I've been dying to see you," she said with a smile as she got comfortable. The waitress stopped at the table and Tracey ordered a Firewhiskey as well.

Turning back to Pansy, Tracey asked quietly, "So what have you been up to lately? I haven't had the slightest bit of interaction with anyone in months." While she was definitely glad to see her friend again, as well as the chance to get out of the house, Tracey was also eager for any gossip Pansy might have. She had been out of the loop for far too long for her tastes.

Pansy set her drink down as her friend arrived. She smiled fully. "Tracey! Oh, it has been too long."

Tracey looked good, but Pansy wondered if some of it was the same facade she herself had. From what she could tell, Tracey hadn't gotten married yet either.

Does it weigh as heavily as it does on me?

"I started with the Ministry, Department for the Regulation of Magical Creatures and Muggles," she offered. "I was off studying dark creatures for a while." Nice, concise, and completely true.

"How have things been for you?" What could have kept Tracey that out of the loop if she'd been living in England?

"That it has," Tracey answered with a smile.

Tracey did have a bit of a facade up, just to cover her anger at being forced into being married so young. She wasn't ready to settle down and start being a baby-making machine. She was a woman, yes, but also a human being in her own right, and she felt she should have at least some say in which direction her life was headed.

"That's nice, at least you get out. I'm stuck indoors all day, listening to old women blabber about exactly what color they want their drapes to be," Tracey answered with a grimace. She was really starting to hate her job.

"I've been pretty good. Too much work and not enough play, unfortunately. I haven't gotten the chance to see or talk to anyone lately," she added with a small grin. "Life has been far too dull for my tastes."

"The color of their drapes?" Pansy laughed. "Oh Tracey, that's awful!"

Tracey's smile was infectious and Pansy smiled again in return. It was good to be back with people she could laugh with.

"Yes, I get to get out, but most often in the dark," she laughed. "Still, it's better than being away from everyone. I lost contact with everyone shortly after Mandy and Draco announced their engagement."

She hoped that wasn't her lip twitching. It had gotten much less now, but she knew it still happened, it still affected her. Taking a breath, she tried to think about what Antonin had said about how desirable she was, and hoped that would be enough to keep any residual pain out of her eyes from the missed opportunity.

Tracey laughed along. It wasn't that bad, really, but she'd never been known for being a patient woman. "I just hope that's not what we'll end up like in fifty years, ugh!"

They'd been friends long enough now that Tracey could tell when something was bothering Pansy, and since she'd just said something about Draco, it wasn't difficult to figure out what it was. Tracey reached across the table to squeeze Pansy's hand in a reassuring manner. It was only breifly, and Tracey took her hand back after a moment, but she wanted to let her friend know that she understood.

But she didn't want to linger on anything that might be in the least upsetting - tonight was supposed to be fun. "Where on earth is Millicent?" Tracey wondered aloud, trying to distract Pansy from thoughts of Draco and Mandy. "She said she'd meet us here."

Pansy shook her head, grateful for the understanding. She focused on the attention she'd received New Year's Eve. She was desirable. It was Malfoy's loss. Really.

At the distraction, she jumped into conversation again. "I don't know. I was looking forward to seeing her too."

She smiled at Tracey. "So, aside from the old ladies who want to discuss their drapes, how has work been?"

Pansy wanted to get the conversation back to things that she knew were safe, were secure. And certainly things that did not involve marriage and children. Their careers were good. Careers were safe and definitely their own desires.
