Problems in the ranks; DE hideout [HA, RL]
WHO: Hannah, Rodolphus, NPC DE Selwyn
WHERE: another DE hideout
WHEN: Wednesday, 19 January, 2000; evening
SUMMARY: A DE harasses Hannah outside of orders and Rodolphus puts a stop to it. COMPLETED THREAD.
RATING: PG-13

It had been four days now, Hannah felt certain, since she had been taken, though the days and nights were blurring together. Nothing made sense, especially the acts of people she often saw, from Bellatrix's daily visits to frighten her to the Death Eaters who liked to jeer at her, but what made the least amount of sense was Rodolphus Lestrange. He was the only one who had seen to her comfort and needs, and continued to do so despite more than one fight either outside her room or within the room itself when Bellatrix found him.

Tensing as the door opened, she moved to the other side of the table in the room, a place she went to every time she awaited whoever was coming in the room. It was likely a new batch of Death Eaters come to harass her. They never stayed long, as twice now they had been caught doing so while Bellatrix was not in the building and Rodolphus was, and they had never touched her beyond those who had to move her from one hideout to the next. But she was still afraid of them.

Selwyn was fascinated by the pretty little blonde plaything that the Lestranges were keeping. Her honest fear was like a drug, and when he had moved her to a different hiding place earlier, he got a taste of it. Now he wanted more. Judging by the way that she was already cowering on the far side of the room, he could tell he had made the right choice.

"Well hello there," he said, stalking slowly, steadily, closer, the table was all that stood between them. "I just came to check on how you like your new home." There was something very unsettling in his eyes as he looked over her, almost as though he was looking at an item on a menu. "I want to make things as comfortable for you as I can."

Of all of them it had to be this one. Hannah didn't know his name, but she remembered him him from earlier, because he had looked at her just like he had before. Though she didn't realize it, she had already started to tremble, as she wasn't an idiot. She could understand what his looks meant.

"I'm... I'm fine. Thank you." Her words were barely above a whisper, as most didn't get this close to her, usually because she was 'dirty' or 'filthy' and that this Death Eater was getting too close. Far too close.

Turning slightly, the Death Eater began to slowly round the small table. When Hannah moved to counter him, so that he was still across the table from her, he laughed, upending the table with such a force that it went flying away from her, toppling upside down a few feet away. He laughed, the sound unpleasant and full of ill will as he again began to slowly stalk forward.

"Fine, thank you? Well my little Mudblood, you don't sound fine, you don't look fine with all of that cowering." he was closer, and his voice dropped to a whisper. "You might be an exceptionally pretty woman were you not filthy and cowering like a dog."

On his way to 'check' on Hannah for the evening, Rodolphus heard the crash of the table and, wand drawn, covered the remained of the path to the door in record time. Throwing open the door, expecting to find his captive escaping or someone in the room trying to orchestrate an escape, he was, for a moment, shocked to see one of his Death Eaters in the room, as he had given no orders for any more taunting tonight.

His gaze slid to Hannah, only to find her flattened against a wall, shaking and looking as though she would soon faint. Fury filled him and he whirled on the Death Eater again. How dare he attempt to be here without permission? How dare he jeopardize the whole plan?

"Selwyn, what exactly do you think you are doing?" he growled, pointing his wand at the man's heart.

Selwyn made the mistake of laughing, holding up his hands in an 'I surrender' sort of gesture. "Only fulfilling Bellatrix's orders to keep up with the prisoner, Rodolphus. I was making sure that this charming little Mudblood didn't get it in her head to run away."

He turned his head, winking at Hannah. "You needn't worry, Rodolphus, I think she and I have come to an understanding." His eyes swept over her again with a feral look. "We understand one another quite nicely, don't we Hannah?"

Against the wall, Hannah whimpered, trying and failing to flatten herself further against it.

Rodolphus growled low again, this time an animalistic warning as he advanced on Selwyn. "Chasing her about certain inspires her to not run off. You complete imbecile!"

Without warning he cast, immobilizing the man before a reaction could occur, then levitated Selwyn out of the room, slamming the door behind him, only to fling the man's body up against it. However, even with the door shut, the volume of his tone was more than clear.

"You go to far, Selwyn, too far in your instructions. Go near her again," he said, curling his hand around Selwyn's throat, "jeopardize the plan again and you will be far sorrier than you could ever dream." He tightened his hand briefly, painfully, then released both his hand and the spell.

Selwyn winced, his hand massaging his throat as he glared at Rodolphus. "Merlin, Lestrange, she's just a Mudblood, and you know as well as I do that we've got this place locked down so tightly that the little lark couldn't fly away even if she wanted to."

He nodded his head back to the room. "I've heard that Bellatrix has been terrifying the girl, would ten minutes of my own entertainment really be that much more than what she's gone through already?"

Rodolphus slammed him into the door again. Being questioned was not something he enjoyed, and to have Selwyn pressing the issue was only serving to enrage him further. "Ten minutes of your sort of entertainment would make her completely useless," he snarled, then grinned, a dangerous one without any humor.

"But, by all means, if you would like to taste Bella's Cruciatus skills personally and for the length of time she would employ them, I am certain you would find happy companionship in St Mungos."

Not even giving Selwyn the chance to respond, he threw the man to the side. It wasn't as though Selwyn was stupid enough to ask to be Bellatrix's torture victim.

It took a moment to compose himself and then he reentered the room, his wand tucked away as he closed the door.

Never so frightened in all her life as she had been when trapped by that large Death Eater, Hannah watched the scene play out in front of her without the ability to move. Had Rodolphus not arrived, there was no telling what would have happened, but he had and some part of Hannah was relieved, though she knew she should not be. When they left the room, she stayed frozen, twitching with each bang against the door, fearing it would be Selwyn who returned.

When it was only Rodolphus who reentered, she sagged slightly against the wall, still breathing shallowly. She was no complete innocent, from Selwyn';s looks, words and actions to Rodolphus' own all but yelled proclamation in the hall, she realized she had been saved from a very personal violation. She still did not understand why, but all that matter now was she had been.

Rodolphus did not speak at first, simply moved to the table and righted it, eyes cast away as though giving her time to compose herself. He waited even after the table was upright, then turned to look at her, finding her still all but flatted against the wall, though admittedly a sagging posture against it.

"He is gone, petit l'un," he said softly, then held out his hand to her, curious how she would react, "and he will not be returning. I will make absolutely certain there will never be an instance such as that again." It was the truth. He would not allow anyone who could not listen to explict roders anywhere near her. Perhaps he would even bring in one of the female Death Eaters to guard her from the others. "You can come away from the wall now."

When Rodolphus spoke, promising that would not happen again, Hannah began to cry, not because she did not believe him, but because it was a relief to hear it. She could endure Bellatrix's visits to frighten her, she could endure the taunting of the others, but what had happened tonight she could not do again, not without revealing she still had he wand and losing her advantage.

She eyes him tearfully for a moment, his hand extended to her, and then stepped forward toward his hand. "I thought... I thought..." she sobbed.

Inwardly, Rodolphus triumphed, even as his outward expression was nothing but wary compassion, as though he was uncertain of what he was doing. She was on her way toward trusting him, soon she would be manipulable, he was certain of it. Though Selwyn's act would be punished, he would make the most of this.

"Hush. I know," he said gruffly, projecting his voice toward the darker husk that would be a counter to anything threatening. "And you will not need to think it again, let alone experience it."

Hannah broke then at the reassurance. She didn't understand why he was being so nice to her, being so contrary to all she had been told about him. All she knew was that he was, he had been without fail and perhaps... perhaps those things from before had been somewhat true? But even if they were not, he had helped her now and she didn't know how to react to that, other than to close the gap between them and lean against him as the only thing even remotely safe in this madness.

"I just want to go home," she sobbed against his front.

Now that was unexpected. Rodolphus stared down at her for a moment, her blonde head resting against his chest, and fought between automatic revulsion at this Mudblood creature touching him and continuing in his protector act. She was obviously terrified, in a way that was far stronger than anything the others had done, and she was now leaning on him quite literally. This was beyond promising, this was an unthinkable advantage.

Lifting his hand, he stroked it down her hair with the barest touch, his voice no more than a soft rumble now. He hoped it was the right act. "Hush, petit l'un, you know what I have said about crying. Hush now."

Hannah knew. She knew crying, even the hint of crying, only set Bellatrix off more, but the damn of feeling had cracked with this night and the tears she had suppressed over the four days were flooding out now. Hand curling into the front of his robes, she clung and cried, seeking not him now but just a solidness that did not seem out to hurt or kill her.

Each step was one closer to a win for him, and Rodolphus rejoiced. Soon Abbott's daughter would be pliable, receptive to being fed all sorts of things, and in time, she would be his while Abbott suffered daily. The thought thrilled him. Abbott's precious Mudblood spawn would be his.

His other arm closed around her as he continued to hush her, muttering stray phrases in French from his own childhood. This was not so difficult, really. He could almost pretend she was not a Mudblood if he focused on getting her calm.

Hannah wanted her father, she wanted Ernie, she wanted Hestia – and all she had now was, of all people, Rodolphus Lestrange. He didn't have to be nice to her. He wouldn't be yelled at or threatened by his wife if he were terrible. He didn't have to stop the other Death Eaters or feed her or check on her more frequently each day, but he did.

He didn't have to comfort her, but he was.

Eventually the tears slowed, not out of natural progression, but the ever-present fear Bellatrix would see or hear, and finally she drew away, looking up at Rodolphus uncertainly.

"Thank you. Thank you so much," she whispered.

As the girl's tears slowed, Rodolphus grew more satisfied with himself, more obsessed with the idea of his revenge. It would be glorious and he would flaunt it for as long as he wanted in front of Abbott without interference. Perhaps he would send audio recordings soon, once he and Hannah talked as the next stage of his plan.

When she drew back, he found himself looking down into the widest and most thankful gaze that had ever been turned upon him. There was nothing that spoke of womanly wiles in the gaze, only an honest and pure gratitude.

Suddenly, the sharp draw back from her was a real reaction, rather than affected.

"Go to sleep, no one will disturb you," he ordered gruffly and strode from the room.

Hannah watched him leave abruptly, but rather than be confused by it, she began to think he understood it. Everything he had ever known was counter to how he was with her and she thought perhaps he didn't understand, or even like, how that felt. But he was helping her, so she would not press him. It was something to think about, and that was what she did as she picked up the mess from the dislodged items from the table and then crawled into bed to think about her family.
