Ernie wasn't sure what to expect. He would have anticipated this day going so differently, and yet here he was, going to apologize again instead of out to celebrate. His meeting with McGonagall hadn't even gone as he had expected, because the dark cloud of his fight with Hestia and Hannah seemed to hang over it.

He apparated to the Abbott house for the second time, though this time the decision was motivated less on the formality of the meeting and more by his own guilt. He didn't want to look like someone taking his place in the Abbott house for granted, after all, he was coming there to apologize, and it was hard to be the dog with its tail tucked between its legs when you let yourself into the house whenever you pleased.

Cautiously, he raised his hand and knocked on the door, shifting his weight anxiously from foot to foot as he waited on someone to answer.

Hannah had been waiting, though she wasn't certain if he would Apparate or come by Floo. It wouldn't exactly be considered eagerly waiting, but that had nothing to do with her feelings for Ernie. She loved him and, if anything, this had proven that more to her. But she still wasn't certain what to do about this. All she could hope was that, like talking with her father earlier, then again with he and Hestia, things would be said even if she wasn't certain.

At the sound of the knock, she followed one of the Aurors out to the front door, hanging back as she knew they preferred when answering the door. It was only slightly over two day ago that Hestia has been rescued, but Hannah didn't know how long this would continue.

Leaning on the ornate post at the bottom of the stairs, she watched Ernie as he finished with the Auror and stepped away.

"Hi," she said softly.

"Hi," Ernie answered, looking down almost bashfully. He took a step closer, so that he was within arms reach of her but he didn't touch her. Looking uncomfortably at all of the witnesses in the room (because the last thing he wanted any of his fellow Aurors to know was that he had been an ass who made his girlfriend cry, he shuffled his weight again between his feet.

"Do you think...we could maybe go somewhere?"

Nodding, Hannah turned and gestured down the corridor before walking down it to the family room. Dominic and Hestia were upstairs, which would give them some privacy without going to her room and setting her father on his typical 'behind closed doors and not able to do anything about it' edge because of it, which was the last thing that needed to happen after today. When they entered the room, she turned to face him, silent and not knowing what to say that did not sound awkward and contrived, until she said, quite softly.

"The flowers are in my room, if you were curious.. I wanted them where I could see them the most. They're very beautiful."

Perhaps still awkward, but it wasn't contrived, she did love the flowers.

"I'm glad you like them." Again with the awkward pause. He had no idea what to say. He could tell her about how the meeting with McGonagall had gone, but he doubted she wanted to hear about that. He could offer to quit again but she had already told him that she wouldn't make his decisions for him and he wanted to be in the Order a good deal.

"I'm sorry." That at least felt natural. He had made her cry, upset her on a day when he promised pleasant surprises, and for that he truly was sorry. "I never meant to upset you, had I thought it out a bit more I likely would have realized that it would, but I wasn't thinking." It took a lot, for a man like Ernie to admit something like that, because he liked for everyone to think that he was always thinking, always one step ahead of the game. "I wouldn't have joined had I thought about it. I want to be in the Order, Hannah, I want to use it to keep you safe, but I wouldn't have joined had I known it would hurt you."

And there it was, the proof of what she had suspected all along. Hannah realized then had there been anything in her that would truly have tried to get him to not do this, she couldn't now because his intentions were simply that pure. She might not like this, she might fear for what it meant, but she couldn't stop him or see him stop himself because of her.

"I'm glad you didn't think about it." Shocking, but there it was. "I told you I wouldn't make your decision for you and I don't want you making a decision just for me. If 'thinking about it' meant realizing only things about me, then that's not what I want."

The truth was, she still didn't know what she wanted.

Surprised at her selflessness, Ernie went to hug her tightly. "You mean more to me than you know, Hannah." Because he wanted to stay in the Order, he didn't say anything else about it. She had already given him the freedom to make his own decisions, which was far more than some might, and he knew how difficult it must be to do so. It was because of her, after all, that he had joined, because she was perfect and yet some might not think that she was because of her blood status. Some might even harm her over it, or kidnap her as they had Hestia to hurt her father. This new position in the Order was going to allow him to stop it. "And I love you."
