Rescue mission; various [MS, EM, HJ, DA, HA]
WHO: Miles, Ernie, Hestia, Dominic, Hannah, various Aurors and Death Eaters
WHERE: Cornwall, Ministry, TBD
WHEN: Monday, 10 January, 2000; early morning
SUMMARY: The raid of the Death Eater's hideout in Cornwall and the secretly-planned, soon to be not, rescue of Hestia Jones. COMPLETED THREAD.
RATING: Hard R

"Fucking ground is fucking cold," Miles groused in an undertone where he lay, belly-down, under a line of trees not far from the hideout. Warming charms couldn't compete with lying in the snow, at least not the ones Miles could do without a noticeable flicker of light. Bloody weather. Fucking Death Eater scum.

"What are they waiting for? No one's moved in an hour. Let's get in there, take the bastards out and set up shop to catch more!"

On edge lately because Ernie had been so, distant and quiet and complete unlike himself – damn it, it threw off their whole comedy routine, you know? – Miles wasn't taking waiting with any kind of patience at all. He wanted in there, he wanted Death Eaters captured, or if it came to it, dead and he wanted to pick off the rest as the arrived, completely unsuspecting for what lay waiting for them.

To say that the time since Dominic's talk with Ernie had went slowly was an understatement. Hestia had somehow become part of his extended family, though when he wasn't sure, and it was hard to know that she was captured by THEM.

"Clever boy." he said, rolling his eyes and reaching out to elbow Miles. Gods damn it, wasn't it time yet? It seemed time. She was there, he could see the house, and he couldn't even just rush ahead. "Fucking cold and fucking boring and it should be bloody...fucking...time." He glanced at his watch and groaned. Talking with Miles in Miles language was enough to give him a migraine, almost as large as the one that came with waiting here doing nothing.

"Listen..." he hissed softly. "Listen, when we get in there, we should stick together. No use having our arses kicked tomorrow for doing something foolish, right?"

"Right." Miles rolled his eyes and grinned, shifting on the ground to elbow Ernie back. This was a bit more like the Macmillan he knew! "I know you're scared, Macmillan," he whispered, keeping his voice to that hoarse quiet despite the burst of merriment, "but I've got your back. You can't go wrong when the great Miles Stebbins has got your back, you know?"

And then the familiar, teasing camaraderie was over as a low hoot from the line of trees sounded and the Aurors lying on the ground moved as one unit, swarming the house in force.

"I..." Ernie's reply was cut short at the signal. This was it. Wand poised he rushed into the house, hexing one of the Death Eaters and rushing toward the stairs. He wasn't concerned with finding the Death Eaters lingering in the house, not now at least. Now he wanted to get Hestia the hell out of here.

He eyed the door that he knew was Hestia's, wanting to open it himself but Dominic had insisted that it would be TOO obvious. Instead he kicked in the other door, the one across from it, and gave it a cursory glance. No one was in there, no one to hex and take his anger on for this. Someone WOULD get his anger before this was over, he was certain of it.

"What do you think, Stebbins?" He tossed over his shoulder. "Think I should take that one too or are you tired of admiring my skill by now?" Stebbins had to open that door. He had to. Dominic had been very insistent on that point, and Ernie wanted Dominic to trust him, to let this be something that brought him into Dominic's family so to speak instead of just an outsider.

"Macmillan, where the bloody hell are you going?" Miles yelled as Ernie dashed for the stairs, but followed Ernie just the same. Someone had to keep him in one piece for Hannah, after all, and Miles certainly wasn't above the gratitude of a pretty blonde who would stuff him full of damned good food for his trouble. Besides, less people to fight for the pleasure of taking down Death Eaters upstairs if they got there first.

Back to the wall to keep it covered as he covered Ernie's back and looked out for any Death Eaters emerging from the upstairs, he snorted as Ernie kicked one door open. Cowboy tactics, as the one Muggle-raised trainee liked to call them. Well, ye haw!

"Fuck that shit," he said, rising up to the challenge Ernie issued without a clue he had just been 'handled' by his best mate. "This is what kicking a door in should look like," and then executed a skillful roundhouse at the door at the same time as he aimed his wand for the lock, the door flying open and hitting the wall with a ferocious crash.

Ready to turn to Ernie with a grin, it was wiped from Miles' face as the last person he expected to see entered his line of sight. Hestia?

"What the FUCKING FUCK?" he howled, wand up and already shouldering himself in front of Ernie to give his partner in crime time to recover from that sight. "What kind of bloody shenanigans are going on in this place?"

"Jesus Christ! It's about time you two rescued me," Hestia retorted, worked up now in a cross between the anxiety of waiting, the anger that had burned hot many times the last few days and tearful relief to see her boys. "Kidnapped and replaced and it took you nearly THREE FUCKING DAYS to realize it?!" Right now, she couldn't have been more proud of the both of them, and even though she had known they were coming, she found it easy to play relief as she lunged at them and hugged them both close at once.

"HOLY FUCKING SHIT! YOU WERE KIDNAPPED?" Miles yelled, holding her with one arm as he waved his wand arm around in agitation. There was not doubt that, even over the noise of Death Eaters being subdued, anyone could have missed that.

Ernie was SO relieved to see Hestia. Though he had seen the false Hestia a few days ago, he knew instantly that this was the real Hestia, and he was SO happy to see her, regardless of the fact that he already knew that Hestia had been kidnapped, the feeling of relief and excitement that he felt at seeing her now was genuine.

"Bloody hell, Hestia..." He leaned in to the hug, whispering into her ear. "I'm so glad to see you." That much was true, and if Miles overheard it wouldn't be too jarring.

That being said, he knew that he had to put on a decent act and act suitably shocked. "What the hell happened?" He demanded, throwing up his hands. The details that Dominic had fed him were hazy at best, and he wanted to hear it from Hestia herself. Reaching his wand behind him, he used it to shut the door. The last thing that he needed was for a Death Eater to surprise them while he and Miles were with Hestia.

There were just too many questions now, questions that he wanted to answer, but one huge one, the how this happened, and another, one even more pressing than the one before.

"Are you alright?" It was the thing Dominic had stressed to him, that he was to ensure that Hestia was not only alright but that she stayed that way. He was to ensure that she got immediate treatment for any injuries that needed it and to get her to St. Mungos as soon as the opportunity presented itself if that was necessary. She looked fine, but he had no idea how things worked, if something was wrong with her or the baby and he just didn't know what to look for.

It was only after he said it that Miles regretted his impetuous cursing tirade. She had been kidnapped and held by Death Eaters, even if she said she hadn't been hurt. But, rather that truly apologize, he fell back on his reliable teasing air.

"Just trying to bring you back to reality, instead of having you go over your rocker on us," he said, tossing her a big grin. "Seems it worked, since you're not talking crazy about being Death Eaters anymore."

"That's only because I think everyone needs to be locked in a room for the next hour and denied anything to drink to make sure there aren't anymore impostors," Hestia retorted, pushing him away from her. "Can't have that until everyone's here, so why bring it up now?"

Part of her was serious, though. Despite her embarrassment at her foolishness, she wouldn't have been the only one to fall for that trap. She hadn't wanted to think about it the last few days, but now in the relative safety of the Ministry, she had to face that if they had gotten away with this, they might plan more replacements, or had already done some switches. The time of code words and extra precautions had come back to the wizarding world.

"The second you hear, Macmillan," she ordered over her shoulder as she walked away with Kingsley. "I want to know immediately."

At the house, Hannah sat curled up on the sofa in the living room, rather than the family room they spent most of their time in, as Dominic was on call and thus working close to the Floo, having been hesitant to leave Hestia while she was ill unless necessary. A book open in her lap but currently unread, she was giving her attention to the table at the side of the sofa where her teapot and mug rested on a tray.

"Dad, do you think-" she began, but then the fireplace flared. But, instead of one of her father's staff, Aurors began to pour out of the fireplace. She rose abruptly, her mug in hand as her book slid forgotten to the floor. The Aurors surrounded the two of them, one going so far as to herd her closer to Dominic's desk to tighten the circle.

One of the Aurors was all ready speaking to Dominic. "Minister, we have a security situation. The "Hestia Jones" in this house isn't Auror Jones, but a Death Eater in disguise," he informed Dominic without preamble, but quietly so his voice didn't carry. "Where is she?"

And then the intended quiet was broken as Hannah screamed, her mug joining her book on the floor with a shatter of porcelain and a splash of tea.

Ernie watched Hestia go. No doubt she could make the long story rather short if the need arose, hopefully news on the Aurors arriving at the Abbott house would come in soon. Although Ernie knew that this had been planned to the smallest detail he was still nervous as Hannah was there, and that wasn't the sort of situation that you wanted your girlfriend to be if you could help it. Unfortunately Ernie COULDN'T help it.

"Come on." he said good-naturedly to Miles. "Let's get a chair, heaven knows how long it will be until we hear any word on Dominic or Hannah or that damned Death Eater, and I want you comfortable as you think about how much better I was at kicking the door down than you."

Dominic pulled Hannah to him, not caring about the mug on the floor or the stain that it would inevitably leave. The situation was believable, making it even easier to act, though as he had thought about this moment with longing since learning of Hestia's disappearance, he would have been able to put on an admirable performance even were there not a small army of Aurors storming his home. Instinctively he pushed Hannah behind him, so that he could talk to the Auror and keep her safe from any "threat." While he knew there was no threat, not everyone (not even Hannah) knew that, and he had to put on a convincing show.

"What do you mean?" he demanded, eyes searching the men who had swarmed in the room for some answers. "Hestia Jones has been on sick leave for the last few days because she's caught some virus. She's not had time to go out and bring home some Death Eater or let a Death Eater come home in her place. She's ill and was likely sleeping."

"I'll find that chair, but it'll be so you can sit in it," Miles said swaggering a bit towards a bench close to the beginning of the Floo fireplaces. "I nailed that door and found Jones on top of that, so I can understand how my aura of clear awesome would make you need to sit down. This seat is all yours," he gestured dramatically to the bench he had just stopped in front of.

Though he was a light-hearted as ever, that changed swiftly as he studied the fireplace the Aurors to the Abbott house had used. "Kidnapped by fucking Death Eaters for three days and no one had any idea. Bloody bastarding fuck."

Feeling as though she had woken up in the middle of a nightmare, Hannah clung to Dominic and looked around him, her wide-eyed gaze firmly on the door as she fought back another scream. The time before, that they thought Dominic had been replaced because of the Mark of his arm, seemed laughably like a joke compared to this. After all, a Death Eater wouldn't have made such an obvious mistake. But that was then, when the difference in him had been the Mark... and being replaced after that knowledge meant she wouldn't know the difference between one mark or the other, just as she hadn't been able to tell the difference between the real and the fake Hestias.

She stiffened, looking up at Dominic and then let go after a long, frozen moment and backed up slowly, straight into another Auror who grabbed her to keep her from going further. He was her father, he was, he had to be, but panic was rising and blurring that certainty, as hadn't she believe the person upstairs had been Hestia, believed it without a questioning doubt? Even now she could find no fault, as there hadn't been some strange mark on her arm or other obvious sign and all the little details had seemed right. But her father had seen this person much more, in taking care of "Hestia", and he had noticed nothing? What if he had been replaced too?

"Sir," the Auror holding Hannah lightly by the shoulders said as the first one to speak moved to the door and peered out, "Hestia Jones is at the Ministry right now, rescued during the raid tonight. We haven't more details than that right now. Where is the Death Eater?"

Ernie rolled his eyes at Miles, making a grand show of staggering over to the bench in a manner that might have been what Miles looked like if he were extremely inebriated. He sat on the bench, sprawling over it so that there was just enough room for Miles if he wanted to sit if he perched on the very edge of it.

That, however, was the extent of Ernie's playfulness. It was true, any one of them could be 'replaced' and with one very well played sick card learn enough to take over someone's life. He would not have caught on to the impostor had it not been for her own confession and Dominic filling in the details. That was troubling, VERY troubling.

Dominic felt a pang of hurt when Hannah backed away from him. It was natural that she would be wary but to have his own daughter look at him like that, as though he had suddenly changed when HE was the same...it wasn't comfortable to say the least. "Hannah, it's me. I..."

His words were cut off when the auror asked where the Death Eater was. "Upstairs, in my bedroom. She's ill."

Several Aurors rushed away to try to catch the Death Eater, and while they were gone Dominic bit the inside of his lips, waiting with his breath held. He wanted Morgandy to get away. He wanted Hannah to realize that it was him. Trying again, he took a step closer. "Hannah, I'm not a..."

Once again his words were cut off by aurors, this time to tell them that the Death Eater had escaped. Good luck, Morgandy. he thought. This wasn't going to be easy on any of them, but Yaxley had been telling the truth when she said that had it been any other Death Eater, he would have been killed more than likely and Hestia for certain. He owed her his life, they all did.

However, the face that he turned to the Aurors wasn't a hopeful one, but one of terror. "Where's HESTIA then? We thought she was here...she's been moping around the house for days, sick as a dog and barely speaking to any of us. She's not been h..." He let his eyes widen, as though he was having some sort of epiphany. "Gods, I thought it was just a pregnancy thing. I thought that she was just sick and pregnant and tired. I never dreamed..."

Relax? Hannah couldn't imagine ever being able to relax at all ever again. One of her worst nightmares had come true in a completely different way than she had ever imagined, as Hestia had been replaced. What if it had been someone else she wouldn't have expected? What if it had been Ernie?

She shuddered in his arms, his reassurances about finding a way to know for certain not giving her comfort. It was far easier to replace someone than make certain they were who they said. A Death Eater had been in her home, had told her things only Hestia should have said, and she wasn't certain she would ever feel safe again knowing she had been so close to that danger. The Centre was different, as those individuals would not risk murder and other crimes to lose the chance at freedom, but these fugitives Death Eaters had nothing to lose and everything to gain.

She couldn't forget that.

Hestia sighed softly, knowing that even after they had discussed the fact that procedure would need to be followed once she had been rescued, the idea of separating would make it impossible for Dominic to not still object. In truth, she objected too, but back in the relatively safety of familiar places, she found she was still able to be sensible. They would have time, so much time to make up for what had been lost, for him to believe that she was fine, that the baby was fine, but right now they needed to do what was necessary to secure the final stages of a plan they had so much hinging on, they and Morgandy as well.

Ready to coax Dominic to compliance, Hestia was halted by Hannah's voice as she drew close to the three of them, her expression serious and still so frightened that Hestia's heart clenched. But, even in that fear, there was a spark of determination that Hestia prayed meant Hannah would be all right.

"You're the Minister, but you still have to follow the rules," Hannah said quietly and then looked up at Kingsley. "I'll go first, if that will make everyone happier."

Looking from Hestia to Hannah and back again, Dominic realized how easy it was to act. This wasn't even acting anymore, this was seeing the woman you wanted to marry distraught and wanting nothing more than to take her home and seeing your daughter look frightened of you and wanting nothing more than to make her forget or make the time pass quickly so that it was behind her. This was about having to deal with red tape until he was blue in the face and all the while powerless to make either of them feel better.

He knew that Hestia wanted and needed Hannah now, and that Hannah seemed to trust Hestia and Ernie. He...well he knew that she was likely a bit wary of him still, both because he had not proven himself to be who he said he was and his literal ties to the Death Eaters. He must look the most guilty to her, he WAS the most guilty, as he had spent the last three days with Yaxley and pretended not to notice that she wasn't Hestia. Gods but he was going to get hell for that from everyone, telling looks of How could he NOT know and superior glances that clearly said that THEY thought they would be able to tell the difference.

Doing the one unselfish thing he was capable of just now, he shook his head down at Hannah gently. "It's alright, sweetheart, I'll go first. You can stay here with Hestia and Ernie for a bit." Hopefully they could convince Hannah that everything would be alright where he had failed.

For one torturous half hour he spoke with Kingsley. Even with rehearsing the details for the last few days with Morgandy whenever they were alone, what he would say, what he would do, the questions were still probing enough to make him have to concentrate. However, Kingsley finished relatively quickly, and then it was Hannah's turn. She wasn't gone for as long, and then it was Ernie's turn.

Ernie hadn't been gone for more than a few moments when another auror came by to check on Dominic. They had been in the Ministry for an hour now, and had had no chance to drink polyjuice. It would have worn out by now. They informed Dominic on the progress of the warding and extra guards at his home and assured him that after Kingsley was finished speaking to Ernie that a final decision on how to get them home would be made. Then the auror left and they were alone again.

Spending the first half of the hour curled up next to Hestia, talking quietly with her and Ernie about things far removed from this night and its frightening aspects to distract themselves, Hannah spent the next half, once Ernie had gone in, in a chair alone, fitfully dozing. She recognized that Hestia and Dominic needed the time, that Hestia was certain he was her father even if that fear lingered within Hannah. Still, despite that doubt, she was in the middle of the Ministry, Aurors all around, Ernie a door away and Miles at the entrance to the room outside Kingsley's office. No one could attack her here and her fear had exhausted her.

However, it was as though an internal alarm had gone off inside Hannah when an hour from the horrible news had passed, for she could no longer doze in and out, instead compelled to study Dominic for any changes, but it was the arrival of the Auror and his subsequent departure that made her check her watch and realize it had been over an hour. She stared at her father a moment longer – he was her father, he had been, and now she felt guilt welling fiercely at the doubt she had allowed herself to have – and then pushed herself out of the chair she had been curled in, tears already streaking down her cheeks again by the time she had reached him and flung her arms around him.

"I'm sorry, so sorry," she said hoarsely.

Despite the uncomfortable way that the last hour had passed, it all receded when Hannah flung her arms around him. It was all worth it. "Shhhh..." He whispered, pulling her closer so that he could place her firmly between him and Hestia. Her face was still pressed to his chest, knowing that just now they all needed to be close together. One arm was around Hannah's shoulder, his fingertips just grazing the edge of Hestia's arm, and the other hand was resting on Hannah's arm. He hoped that in that position it would be a bit better for her.

"Shhhh, Hannah." He said, leaning in to kiss her forehead. "You don't need to apologize," He moved the hand on Hannah's arm to tilt her chin up, so that he could look her in the eyes. "I understand that you were worried, and we'll figure out ways to make certain this never happens again." He looked over Hannah's shoulder to meet Hestia's gaze. "We're all going to stay together from now on and everything will be just fine."

Coming out of Kingsley's office, Ernie shut the door behind him. "Erm..." He smiled uncomfortably when he saw Hestia and Hannah and Dominic all together. He felt as though he was coming in at an inopportune moment. "So we're finished now?"

While it was a small relief to know the person who had pretend to be Hestia hadn't wanted to hurt them, Dominic's choice of words didn't sit well with Hannah. They might not have been in danger in that specific was, but the danger was still real and would not be going away. Her fears moved from replaced people to dead ones, slit throats and hex wounds and blank-eyed dead looks of the Killing Curse and she began to cry, as she hadn't before. Before she had some modicum of control, though it was the paralysis of fear that was the credit for that more than anything. Now, though, she was home in her house and there was no need to watch people to make sure they didn't change before her eyes. Now she could cry out the fear trying to suffocate her.

"Daddy, I'm so scared," she sobbed, holding on to him now as though he were the last thing between her and drowning in her terror.

Beside Hanna, Hestia stifled a groan and resisted giving Dominic a look for his choice of 'dangers we didn't face' because she knew it hadn't been intentional. Instead she turned away and summoned the house-elf, quietly requesting she bring them all something to eat and drink. Hannah needed the calming influence of some tea and she needed a real meal, rather than the food the Death Eaters had grudgingly fed her on orders to keep her from starving.

Dominic and Erne stayed close to her, even when the house elf brought enough food and drink into the room to keep a small nation fed for some time.

"I know you are..." Dominic said painfully, sad that he couldn't just make her forget. As a father he wanted to have the power to make everything magically alright, and that he didn't this time ade him nervous.

"Scoot over." he said unceremoniously to Ernie, causing the boy to scoot over a bit more to give him room to sit barely onto the couch. This couch was clearly not made to support so many people, but Dominic thought that the close proximity to him and Hestia would help. "We're all going to stay here until we have a better plan." He announced to Hannah softly. "We're going to make certain that this NEVER happens again...please, sweetheart, don't cry?"

Hannah wouldn't have cared if they were all packed into a sardine can with each other, as long as it meant the foundation of her life was right there and not going anywhere. But she wasn't calmed by the idea of a plan.

"But what can we do? They have ways of finding things out to pretend to be any of us!" she cried, drawing her legs upward. "Even if we thought of things to say that only we knew, they could find it out, they could!"

"Hannah, listen to me," Hestia said, reaching across Dominic to touch Hannah's updrawn knees. "No one even needs to know if we even have some way between us of making sure, and something like that would be very hard to get out of any of us. Ernie and I are trained to be tough when it comes to that, and your dad has been avoiding tell his secrets to people for a very long time. And no one, no one, could ever hope to steal you away and pretend to be you. No one could manage to be as sweet and wonderful as you if they were filled with that kind of hate. We'd know it in a second."

"But I didn't know!" Hannah said, looking up at Hestia with a tearful, expression of self-recrimination. "I didn't know it wasn't you!"

"Because we made certain you wouldn't," Hestia said patiently, gently rubbing her leg. "If the situation had been what it seemed, you and your dad and Ernie would have known in a few hours it wasn't me. Just like you would have known earlier had it really not been your Dad and Ernie. You were scared, but you knew deep down."

"I was helping to disguise her as well, Hannah." Dominic rested a hand on her shoulder, feeling awfully that she blamed herself for this. Part of him felt terribly too, that he had not been able to tell from the moment that he saw Hestia that it wasn't her, but you simply couldn't think that way. You couldn't be in CONSTANT fear of your loved ones. After all, people have off days, people get cranky and temperamental and have times when they don't feel very social, and if you locked them up every time they did it for an hour to make certain they were who they said they were...well you likely wouldn't have them in your lives for long. "Had I not helped her to look so ill, had I not kept you from seeing her more than you did, you would have caught on too." It wasn't exactly fair, what he had done, but it had kept them all safe and he didn't regret it at all.

"And Hestia's right." Ernie chimed in. "Your Dad and Hestia and I can handle keeping our secrets, and NO ONE could ever steal you away and get away with it. You're too good for them, even if one of them were a top notch actress..." He blushed, looking at Hestia sheepishly. "Not that Hestia's NOT good, it's just that you're..."

"Innocent." Dominic said, rescuing the boy from his stumbling. "And sweet, and so far above their mischief and marauding that they wouldn't even know where to begin."

Hannah simply shook her head. "It's not that easy, Ernie. Dad won't do what they want now, be in their pocket, not now after what they did to Hestia." She shook her head. It seemed so clear to her, her father swearing off the Death Eaters, that she didn't even consider he would stay under their thumb to continue being an informant or divert some of the risk form them by still doing things they wanted. "If they can't replace him like they tried to do with Hestia, they'll try to k-kill him." The last was a soft stutter, a horror that was far more real than it had ever been. But she needed to say it, to talk about it, or she knew she would go mad.

Hestia ran her free hand across his chest, up his shoulder and down his arm, seemingly absorbing the warmth of his bare skin through her fingers and palm. "I missed you ever second," she said, giving him a fierce kiss just in case he wasn't certain of that face. Also, she didn't really want to talk about public announcements about the baby or whatever he was going on about right now, and his touches and kisses to her hand gave her a suitable distraction. The hand was bare, it had been since Mory had taken everything she was wearing, and it was a loss that Hestia had felt poignantly along with the loss of those she loved best.

"Where's my ring? She promised she'd leave it here," she asked when she had pulled back from the kiss, sliding off his lap to go hunting for it.

Ernie shook his head firmly no. "There are lots of people that they would like to kill, Hannah. The aurors, the Order, people whose blood isnt' pure enough for their liking, but wanting to and being able to are different. Besides, we don't know for certain that your dad is going to do that. He hasn't approved of what they've been doing for a long time, perhaps the greatest course of revenge would be to carry on just as he has been, informing people about what they're up to and ratting out their plans." He swallowed deeply, knowing that he might come to regret his words. "I'm not going to let anything happen to him, Hannah. The rest of the aurors and I will protect him.

Dominic went to the windowsill, where Morgandy had left the ring for him on her way out, and picked it up. "It's here." He said, still somewhat introspective as he tried to think about what to say and if now as even the most appropriate time to say it. Still, she had been gone for three days, and if now wasn't the time, then what was?

"I like this ring," he slid it back onto her finger, admiring the way it looked on her hand. "But I think now's the time to replace it with one that means a little bit more." For the first time he wasn't talking about how he WANTED to replace it with a different one, or that he should or wished it were possible, he was speaking firmly about what he would do, if she allowed. "I think that an engagement ring, and, after a bit of planning, a wedding ring should be there." he looked down at her, feeling suddenly nervous and awkward as a teenager asking his first pretty girl on a date.

"If they're going to hurt you and our family regardless of what I do, then I see no reason to deny ourselves of what we really want." There were other reason, more practical ones that had to do with guards and protection for her, but the basic reason was that she was his and he wanted to be able to have the world know it, to raise their child as man and wife. "I would like it if you would marry me, Hestia...." He dropped to his knees, looking up at her. "I want you to be my wife, and not just for some secret ceremony, but for ANY ceremony. Marry me?"

Hugging him tightly, Hannah offered him the best smile she could for what he was saying. "Thank you," she said simply, as what could she say to him promising to protect Dominic, just as she had been bereft of the right words in knowing her father had trusted Ernie with something so important. Nuzzling his jaw for a moment, she knew no absolute could be set about any of this, nor would her fears fade just because of a promise, but there were only so many things Ernie could say in response and she would not make him repeat himself over and over.

"I love you, Ernie," she whispered and then lifted her head to kiss him.

As he placed the ring on her finger, Hestia smiled fondly down at it. It might be just a piece of jewelry to most and it might seem materialistic to value it so much, but it was her most prized material possession, even more than her wand, which she had always considered an extension of herself. This ring, though, it was not a part of herself as much as it was a representation of something that was a part of her that could not be taken as her wand had. It was his promise for a better time but it had always been a symbol of Dominic's love for her, and conversely, her love for him. And-

... What?

She looked up at him, only to have to look immediately down at him as he dropped to the floor and really, truly, actually proposed. she was dumbfounded. For a moment she could only stare at him slack-jawed, as this was the absolute last thing she had ever thought she would be hearing.

"What did you just say?" she asked stupidly when she finally found her voice.

Ernie closed his eyes, not sleeping but very content to have her nuzzling him and close and not angry after all that had happened. "You're welcome." He said, tilting his head to ghost his lips over hers. "I like being the favorite."

Dominic smiled up at Hestia. This was HER genuine reaction, because she was Hestia and not someone pretending to be her, and he would have it no other way. It was this woman who he wanted to be his wife, no other.

"Hestia Jones, will you be my wife? If you agree to wear my ring and put up with my over protectiveness and occasional eccentricities I will put up with your mug stealing and we could have a wonderful life together."

He looked up at her, face teasing but his eyes nervous, anxious for her answer. "Please, Hestia..."

Hannah's lip, though the change was hidden by the position they were in, began to quiver. She wasn't sure she would ever be ready to go back, soon or ever. "I'd rather let them win than lose anyone," she whispered. It was fear talking ultimately, but she felt the certainty of that right now.

Hestia stroked the length of him knowingly for a moment, relishing not only the feel but his reaction, then let go. "Good," she said, then laid back against the bed, holding her arms out to him. "Now make love to me, Dominic." She knew it would not be the height of fiery passion or explosive releases, but that wasn't what she needed right now. What she needed, what she wanted, was to be thoroughly and entirely his, to be made love to and feel all was right again.

Ernie rubbed Hannah's arm, his eyes closing at the thought of how much this had effected them all. He wanted to hunt Rodolphus and Bellatrix Lestrange down even more now, for what they had done to Hestia, yes, for daring to try to replace her certainly, but now also for what they had done to Hannah, for the way they made her this fearful. "You aren't going to lose anyone else, I promise." It might be yet another promise that he had no control over, but he was determined to keep it. Hannah needed him to so he would.

Dominic moved seamlessly to the shelter of her arms, kissing her lips for a long moment before doing anything else. Had he kissed Morgandy like this, there would have been guilt, but he was certain he would have known in a moment that it wasn't Hestia, because only Hestia could make him feel so powerful and alive and yet vulnerable at once. Having Hestia in his life had made him a better man, more driven and capable than he had ever been, but she was a weakness as the last three days had clearly shown. However, like any capable wizard, he was going ot protect his weaknesses, ensure that an opponent didn't have the chance to use them against him.

Joining them in one fluid, slow move, Dominic sighed softly. "Gods, Hestia, I've missed this, missed you. Every night I wanted you, this."

Laying her head on his shoulder, her body resting against his, arms firmly around him, Hannah heaved a shuddering sigh. She wanted to believe that promise, believe it the way she would have years ago, but she couldn't believe anymore in the promises she knew people had very little control over. She had lost her mother, she might have lost Hestia had it been a different Death Eater and she could still lose any of them if someone let their guard down, even for a moment. It was overwhelming, this fear, and she began to tremble violently again without being very aware of it.

Moaning softly as he slid within her, Hestia tightened her arms around him, still for a moment rather than moving needily. She let the closeness sink in and more than just the physical 'close' they were in being joined, but also the feel of skin on skin and his weight on her. It was home. More than this place or any place, where he was, where she could be with him without restraint, was home and it was for that reason that she had said yes to his proposal and would not take it back, because she could not live without him near now that they had been pulled apart.

"I wanted you, but I wanted to be here, in your arms," she whispered, finally moving slowly, motion hampered by her legs twined around his, but the restriction of movement suited her because it provided continual closeness. "I know..." she gasped quietly, "I know I've never called this home, but being here with you? Is home for me."

Ernie said nothing, because he knew there was nothing that he could say to make this even a little bit better. Promises were just words when it came down to it, words that he had little or no power to back up. Instead of speaking he let his hands move massagingly over Hannah's back, as though trying to soothe her or persuade her to sleep.

Dominic looked down at her, eyes wide because he had wanted to hear her call this place home for so long. He had foolishly persuaded himself that it was out of wanting her to feel at home but this...this feeling made it seem like he was waiting on so much more. Hearing her say that made him think that they were already man and wife. It was no longer a matter of "as good as married" or "the woman he would make his wife as he could." No, this was a feeling of her already being joined to him in a way that marriage joins people. The ceremony, it seemed, would only be a formality.

"I love you." he said fiercely, locking his eyes with her own pale ones. "And I will never stop loving you. I will make certain that we are both 'home' from now on, because I never want us to be apart ever again."
