Massacre aftermath; Ministry & Ernie's flat [EM, HA, HJ, MS, DA]
WHO: Ernie, Hannah – also Hestia, Miles, Dominic
WHERE: Ministry; Ernie's flat
WHEN: Saturday, 1 January, 2000
SUMMARY: The Death Eater's massacre ends, those involved regroup and Hannah comforts Ernie. COMPLETED THREAD.
RATING: PG-13

"There, now you and Stebbins can go back to arguing over whose face is prettier," Hestia said to Ernie, angling his chin upward a moment to double check her work on his jaw, the largest of his dueling wounds but thankfully nothing life-threatening. Satisfied, she patted his cheek, the action softer and maternal than it would have been between her and another, but then most of what Hestia had said and done since the Aurors and trainees regrouped had been decidedly maternal. It was better that then give in to the urge to curl up and cry at the loss of one of her first year trainees.

Behind her, Miles folded his hands under his chin and mouthed "aww" at Ernie in the best approximation he could muster of mock-feminine, then folded and moved his arms as if holding a baby he was rocking. This pantomime continued as he made silent kissy faces and then pretended to make out with his hand, managing to mock Ernie for both being mothered and accuse him of having the hots for Hestia all in the space of a few gestures. Not that Hestia wasn't a total babe of course, but she was a bollocks-buster. Hence why the pantomine was going on behind her back, rather than in front of her face.

Ernie watched Miles as he made his faces and gestures behind Hestia's back. Truth be told he appreciated what Stebbins was doing, fighting so hard to lighten the mood because he could hardly think of anything other than the motionless face of that trainee. Had he taken the other side of the fight, had he wandered that way...but here he was and here Miles and Hestia were and they were fine.

Wanting to return the favor for Miles and Hestia, Ernie cleared his throat, trying to find some measure of levity. "My face is, of course, but you might want to check on Stebbins, Hestia. He's become rather amorous with his hand and I fear that his actions may become quite alarming if we don't stop him soon. Poor bloke isn't used to going more than ten minutes without making out with something, I'd watch it were I you, Jones."

"I know," Hestia replied calmly, not even turning around. "The third eye in the back of my head, remember? In fact, he's probably doing the ridiculous hourglass motion while he waits for me to turn around, so it's good the Minister is busy."

Behind her, Miles dropped his arms and let out a low whistle. "Damn, Jones, you're really a bit freaky."

Hestia laughed, the sound stilted. "I know your secret wish is to snog me, Stebbins, it's not a secret," she teased, a carefulyl affected dryness in her tone.

Miles' grin was unholy and wholly unrepentant. "If you're up for it, I could make it good for you, baby," he said, waggling his eyebrows.

"I didn't just hear you call me baby," Hestia said with a quelling look then pointed over to where Kingsley was gathering the group that Miles had been a part of. "Now go over there and listen."

She turned back to Ernie as Miles ambled off, still grinning, but even it didn't completely blot out what lingered in his eyes, the same thing that was so openly in Ernie's, sitting so heavily on Ernie's shoulders. "Hannah's asleep in Dominic's office, if you want to wander up there. He'd worry less if she weren't at the Ministry and we're going to be here a long while, so take her back to your flat? The house hasn't been secured yet."

Watching Miles go to be with Kingsley's group, some sort of manly macho ego forced him to keep up his teasing facade until Miles was safely away, and then his face fell to something more neutral, more somber and less jovial. He had seen one of his friends die, a boy who could well have been him, a young man who he had viewed as an ally, one of his auror trainee friends (and that organization alone was like a small band of brothers) and that had a way of sombering a person pretty quickly.

He wasn't sure at first if it was the right idea, after all, he wouldn't be much company and he didn't want to worry her by moping around all night, but he reconsidered before even speaking. Hestia was right, the ministry wasn't the safest place to be just now. "Alright..." he said, nodding without further protest. "When should I have her home? I wouldn't want the minister hunting us down..." Despite his new attempt at humour the joke fell flat and he sighed, unsure of what else to say. This had gone better than it might have, better than expected, but there had still been loss, and that was hard to bear.

Hestia watched his expression crumble, seeing beyond the neutrality to the pain. Tears pricked her eyes. Focus. She needed to focus. "We'll Floo call when we're back and the house is secure. I'm going to send one of Hannah's guards ahead to check out your flat, then they'll both take shifts between your outer hall and their base flat across the way. Ward the Floo – not that you should need to worry, but it's a good precaution – but not so it's completely closed down so we can Floo call."

She off at a clock and then back at him. The sun would be rising shortly, but there was hours still of work. "It's likely not going to be until lunchtime or after, you both should get some sleep."

The instructions were done, as much as she wished they weren't, as it was easier to hold it together when she was being more businesslike. She fell silent, studying him a moment, then had to fight the urge to gather him up. Damned pregnant emotions.

Ernie too wasn't sure what to do. He knew that he should just go take Hannah and go home, he was tired and wary of the world, but there was just something so wrong about leaving her here alone. It wasn't a lack of capability on Hestia's part, she was strong and fierce and even he was frightened of her anger at times, but he knew that she cared for them all like friends and companions and perhaps even children in a few fortunate cases...and she had suffered a large tonight as well.

He rested a hand on her shoulder, but impulsively pulled her into a brief, tight hug. "Take care of yourself, Jones, make that damned minister of yours take care of you before you let him ask for Hannah. Don't worry, I'll take care of her."

Turning swiftly with an impish smile, he made to go. He jammed his hands in his pockets, lest he use them to pull her out of there. Frowning when his fingers touched something unfamiliar there, he pulled out the slip of paper that Hannah had somehow managed to plant before the battle. The paper had kept him safe, he was certain of it. It had been a warm weight, an anchor to keep him steady and grounded and focused on what he needed to focus on. Because of it he HAD been careful, because of it he was alive and safe now. It was only after the battle was over and he saw the trainee, felt the tug of guilt that he had not been there to protect the boy, that he momentarily forgot about the note. Now, rereading the note, he smiled again. It was time to get Hannah off of that damned uncomfortable couch (Ernie thought it was more for show than comfort anyhow) and take her to his home, protect her the same way that she had protected him. That's what you did when you loved someone.

Grateful for Hestia's forethought, Hannah hugged him tight and then stepped back, releasing him to take his hand in hers, fingers laced tightly. "Let's go then," she said and the walked out of Dominic's office, getting to the Floo without being detained and landing in Ernie's living room a moment later. It was only then that she released him completely, but not before kissing him gently.

"Are you very hungry, or not very hungry?" she asked. The former would be easier to cook for, the latter would be difficult in the respect she would have to coax him to eat, but she felt certain he hadn't eaten in a long time, even before when he had been at home before reporting in.

Ernie couldn't remember the last time he had eaten an actual meal more than just something that he grabbed on his way here or there. Likely it was a day or more ago, before he learned of the massacre that the Death Eaters were planning. Still, after seeing so much pain and suffering, he wasn't really interested in eating, which was quite unlike him. The typical male, he always had room for something delicious, particularly when he saw how happy it made Hannah to take care of someone close to her.

"I'm not really hungry." He said quietly, raking a hand through his hair as he stripped off his auror robes and tossed them in disgust into a corner. He wasn't a particularly messy man (at least, not now that he had a girlfriend who could come over and see what a slob he could be) but just now he didn't want to look at the thing for another minute. Stripping off the thick sweater he had on in a similar fashion he draped it over his arm. That, he decided, could be put into the clothes hamper. That he could still stand to touch, as it hadn't been worn as well by a dead boy.

"You don't have to worry about making me anything," He said, giving her a small smile. "I woke you up anyhow. Grab something for you from the kitchen and I'll go shower and then we both can get some sleep."

While part of Hannah had prepared for the answer of 'not very hungry' as an understandable result of everything he must have had to face tonight, it still concerned her. He was a man with a healthy appetite – between he and Miles, they could blow through several dozen cookies easily in one sitting, or several pizzas, or several cartons of take away – the key being several. It just meant she would have to work harder to make him something that would both tempt him but would be nutritious if he only ate a little.

"I'm fine, I'm not very sleepy at the moment." Not that she wasn't tired, but right now she was awake and concerned for him. She closed the small space between them and hugged him close. "Come back out here when you're done?" she asked, nodding to his kitchen, "I'm going to sit at the table and eat."

Ernie held her close for a moment, closing his eyes. He wasn't sure what it was about holding her close that made everything seem suddenly better--no alright as it normally did because people were still dead, but better none the less--but somehow it did. "Alright." he said quietly, kissing her lips briefly before pulling away.

His shower was slightly longer than normal, owing to the fact that he let the hot water fall over him for a long while, as though that alone could wash away the memory and regrets of the battle. Once he decided that he had taken long enough, he washed quickly.

Emerging from the bathroom in a pair of flannel pajama pants and an old faded t-shirt, he went to join her once more.

Not letting go of his hand, Hannah rose from her chair and moved to stand next to his, wrapping her free arm around him to hug him close. This was one of the reasons she loved him so much, that the things that happened did not turn him hard or cold, that he still put his full heart into his work and life. But, right now, it pained her to know so, for it meant he was hurting.

"You were able to do more than others have been, because you knew at least some of what was coming last night," she reminded him softly. "You can't help how it affects everyone, just like you can't help how it affects you, but you made a difference last night and that will be what helps everyone move forward."

"I know..." Knowing and feeling may be two different things, but Hannah had helped him with the reminder.

Somehow there was something about hearing her gentle voice reassure him that made it much more believable. Ernie stood, pulling her close so that he would have an excuse to close his eyes. He wasn't trying to shut her out. He wasn't distancing himself from her. He was pulling himself together.

No man could be strong all the time, Ernie knew it as much as the next man--perhaps even more considering his sabbatical in Greece--but that didn't mean that he didn't want Hannah to see just how much her words had effected him. It was an uncomfortable truth, one you had to learn to really be an adult, that you could struggle and fight and do your damnedest and still come up short at the end of the day. It was the sort of truth that made him wish that he and Hannah were back in Hogwarts and carefree again with nothing more concerning to worry about than how many owls they would earn.

But time turners weren't something that you could use for something so trivial as uncomfortable transitions to adulthood, and Ernie knew he wouldn't use one even if he could. He had her now, his best friend, his girlfriend, his Hannah, and he wouldn't trade that for the world.

"You're something else, Abbott..." The words, whispered near her ear, were near neutral, but the adoring look on his face as he pulled away slightly was far easier to read. "If Stebbins knew just how lucky I was to have you to come back to he might try to steal you away with that charm that nearly won your dad over to his side."

Ah, there was the levity he had been searching for. Hannah was gifted indeed.

Hannah went gladly into his arms and laid her head on his shoulder, wanting to be a comfort to him. Her father or Hestia might not always let her be that, because they were too busy protecting her from all they could, even shielding her a bit too much even now, but Ernie always had let her be there for him fully. She might not be able to fix all his problems or wipes all his concerns away, but she could be supportive ad love him, and ti had always seemed that those two things were more important in giving. What she gave, however, seemed small in comparison to what she gained from having him in her life.

She smiled almost bashfully when he spoke, a smile that turned to amusement a few moments later. The idea of anyone stealing her was was preposterous, as even if Miles was not so brash as he was, Ernie had her heart and always would.

"He could try," she said, shaking her head with amusement, though her words were honest, "but he wouldn't get far at all. I don't want anyone but you, ever."

Ernie grinned at her. Yes, she really was something else, Miss Hannah Abbott. "And even if someone as...overly confident as the female version of Miles would be..." Ernie shuddered to think of such a thing, someone with Miles's over-inflated ego in a woman form flirting with him. "Came along, I wouldn't even consider it, because I'm happy with you. I've never been happier."

He reached down, taking her hand in his and squeezing it tightly. "You must be exhausted, fussing and caring for me so. Look at me, dragging you out of sleep to cook for me and listen to my worries. Your father would have my hide if he knew. We should probably get some sleep, so that when he comes to drag me off to Azkaban for keeping you up all night at least I'll have a full night's sleep in." He winked, enjoying the fact that he could be a bit more lighthearted again.

Shortly after noon, Hestia and Dominic were finally free of the Ministry to go home and catch up on some sleep before the evening. As much as could be done was already underway, sending relief to those people and places attacked, tracking the Death Eaters and the like, and the rest would be a process. For now, the best thing they could do was rest and resume when they could think and plan without the blur of exhaustion.

"They're probably still asleep," she warned Dominic as they exited the Floo into the house. Dropping tiredly down in front of the fireplace, she opened the connection to Ernie's flat. "Macmillan," she said quietly, hoping her voice would carry to him without also walking Hannah.

Somehow the notion that Ernie AND Hannah were probably both still asleep did not seem that reassuring to Dominic. He was becoming a bit more reasonable about their relationship, and relaxing just a bit more, but that wasn't to say that he was prepared to think that while he was out cleaning up the mess that the Lestranges had made of the rest of the wizarding world Ernie was off sleeping with his daughter--even if it wasn't sleeping in THAT way.

Ernie, normally a fairly light sleeper, thankfully woke up when Hestia called for him. Running a hand through his hair, he groaned quietly, not wanting to get out of bed. It was so damned comfortable and warm, no doubt due to Hannah's presence. Slowly, carefully, he rolled her from resting on top of his chest to resting on the pillows, and got out of bed. He prayed that Hestia didn't want Hannah home just yet. She deserved the chance to rest fully, and he liked having her here.

"Morning, Jones..." he said, kneeling next to the floo. "Did you follow my advise?"

Hestia smiled tiredly at him. "Depends, did you follow mine?" she asked, gesturing in front of her to indicate the Floo. Technically, she hadn't really let Dominic 'take care of' her yet, not while still at the Ministry, though she wouldn't have been able to stop him had he determinedly tried beyond quietly fussing at her.

"Is Hannah awake?" she asked, knowing if she didn't ask it, Dominic would drop down on the floor and start asking it himself.

Ernie nodded. "Of course..." He gave her a sheepish smile. "I'm a clever boy, Jones, and you've taught me well, Hannah's safe with me." It was a wonder what a night spent with her in his arms, even under the most chaste of circumstances, could do. He felt teasing, normal. It seemed odd, because there was still a weight there, knowledge that people were dead and hurt and it would be partly his job to fix it, but it didn't feel like it was his fault anymore.

"Enough joking." Dominic said gruffly, somewhat snappish after his long sleepless night and the fact that Hestia was just as tired. He wanted her home, resting, but he knew better than to push the point until she was ready. Because of it, though, he was in a surly mood. "Where's Hannah?"

"Sleeping." Ernie said quickly, not wanting to anger him more. Best to stay on the minister's good side, it was what Hannah needed to be happy and he knew it.

"Where?"

The question was short--only one word, but it was a loaded one. Deciding that one white lie in the scheme of things (perhaps if he phrased it right it would be more omission than lie) was warranted to keep the peace and the smile one Hannah's face, he chose his words carefully.

"I offered her my bed and said that I would take the couch."

Well that deflated Hestia fairly promptly, turning exhausted ire to exhausted chagrin as she slid a glance sideways as Dominic, then back at Ernie. He did have a point about his reasons, but she still wasn't pleased he had done what he did. She was too tired for clever distraction games.

"You didn't have to mislead us," she said quietly. "If you had just said she was sleeping, we likely would have left her here. The Manor's still being secured, we've all had a long night and we all need the sleep, so there's no use disturbing her." Of course, the 'we likely' was pure assumption on Hestia's part that she would have been able to drag Dominic to bed with relative ease after assuring him Hannah was safer at Ernie's than at home at the moment, not knowing if the Death Eaters were done.

"Had I admitted the truth he would have stormed over here and you know it." Ernie said grumpily, his frown returning. Dealing with Dominic this morning would do that to a person, no wonder Hestia was in such a bad mood at times. "Are you both satisfied? Merlin, what sort of man do you take me for, one who would take advantage of her at a time like this?" When and if he was ever fortunate enough to know her in that way he didn't want it to be some hasty thing done when they were both half dead with exhaustion. He didn't want it to be tainted by death and unhappiness. He wanted it to be a singularly happy and wholly blissful memory that he could carry with him no matter the situation, the same way he had carried her note close to him.

"Stop it." Dominic said, his voice stern. "I've had enough of you talking to her, to us like that. Everyone wonders why I can't stand you at times, and it's because you don't know the first thing about respect. You hate me, I know that, but you claim to revere Hestia as a teacher, as a friend. I won't let you talk to her like that. If you cared for her you wouldn't talk to her like that."

Hestia's chagrin swiftly changed to a glare. "Well, I never took you for a liar, that's what!" she spluttered at Ernie. "I thought we had established we needed to be straight with each other, both on the job and off the job because of the fact we're all a family! When have I ever been unfair to you, not stood on your side when necessary? He ended up showing up any how, genius, and now you've made yourself look like an ass by being deceptive – and you!"

With that, she spun to face Dominic. "First of all, he doesn't hate you, second of all, he wasn't even talking to you, he was talking to me, third of all, I can take care of myself, and fourth of all, he's not talking to me 'like that'! We're all exhausted, we're all strained beyond normal tolerance after last night and we all need sleep!"

"We've established that I was trying to not get killed! For fuck's sake, Jones, do you really think that's what Hannah wants to wake up to?" His voice was a low hiss, trying NOT to wake Hannah. "Seeing me getting killed for something that wasn't even that bad? I assumed that you would know that I would tell you later when you weren't hanging out with this homicidal ass! I'll tell you whatever you need to know, but not when he's involved!"

Dominic's eyes flashed dangerously, misunderstanding Ernie's words. Instead of seeing that Ernie was talking about Dominic's seeming need to kill him, Dominic thought he was referencing the mark on his arm, and it angered him to no end. "Come on, Hestia, we're leaving. I'll go get Hannah and we'll be gone in a moment."

Not that she did not want to, but Hestia simply could not believe it would be all right. They had lied to Hannah, by only telling her it was an argument when Hannah had questioned Dominic and then herself, rather than tell the truth of the argument. It had been to protect her, on Hestia's part to preserve that trusting innocence when it came to Dominic's male posturing being simply for show to her, rather than know the truth of how impetuous and aggressive he could be, but now Hannah knew and had been hurt further in learning it.

Saying nothing, Hestia simply moved to the fireplace and went back to the house, casting one last look over her shoulder at Hannah before she disappeared in the green flames.

It was only after they left that Hannah spoke, eyes still closed as she curled up a bit tighter on the sofa. "How could you lie to me, Ernie?" she whispered. "They've lied before, so maybe it makes sense they can't stop lying now, but I thought we were always supposed to be honest with each other about everything?"

Dominic lingered for another moment, his gaze sad, hoping that perhaps she would say something, that he could find the right words to say, but there were no words to make up for the falsehood and so instead he turned, following Hestia into the flames.

Ernie frowned, looking away from her. How COULD he have lied to her? She had shared such secrets with him, secrets about her father and the way she had felt...it was stupid come to think of it. "At the time, it didn't seem like such a lie." He said honestly. "I told you we had argued, and we had. I thought it was alright to leave out how bad it got, because you already knew that there had been an argument and knowing the details would only upset you. Now I wish I had told you."

Still Hannah did not open her eyes, but it seemed the desire for rest was countered by the agitation still gripping her, muscles tense along her limbs and back, hands fisted against her chest. "You should have told me," she whispered fiercely, "I have a right to know if Dad is doing things like drawing his wand on you and I have a right to know if you're drawing your wand on my father!" She felt... not specifically betrayed, but deceived because while she had thought there would be no secrets anymore between her and her father, and never secrets between she and Ernie – at least not secrets and omissions of the magnitude of this – they had continued or started. This was not concealing feelings to make a situation easier, this was concealing violence and intense hatred and things she did not want to think existent between the two most important men in her life.

"I felt foolish, for my part of it." Ernie said honestly. "I felt threatened at the time, as though I were about to come to immediate harm, and so I pulled out my wand, never considering that had someone caught me the repercussions would have been disastrous at best, never thinking that he would never threaten his job in that way. I reacted instinctively, as an auror, when I should have reacted logically."

He sighed. "And then after you two made amends, I didn't want to mess things up for you again. I've been the cause of so many disagreements between the two of you, I didn't want to run to you and tattle about what he had done." He lowered his voice. "Selfishly, I didn't want to see you unhappy with me for what I had done."
