A slow-growing madness; Château de Saule Noir [AS, NBM, RB, RL, ASL]
WHO: Aurora, Narcissa, Regulus, Rabastan, Allyssa, TBD
WHERE: Château de Saule Noir
WHEN: Thursday, 30 December, 1999; late afternoon
SUMMARY: Carina's kidnapping begins to wear heavily upon those in the Manor. IN-PROGRESS THREAD.
RATING: PG-13

Sleep had not come, not in any real length or depth, for anyone within Château de Saule Noir in the twenty-some hours since Carina had been kidnapped. The Manor had been alive with activity since yesterday evening when all manner of individuals from Aurors to volunteers, had appeared there to organize a search and question individuals. People had come and gone, yet nothing had come of it.

At least, until the owls. The letters had started sometime in the last few hours, detailing a madness they had not even suspected, of a person convinced by the Venom Quill entries of the debauchery that did not truly exist in the lives of those mentioned in the entry. Someone saw him or herself as the voice of reason, but it was a voice they all were certain was simply mad.

Aurora had been unwilling to leave last night when there might be something even in a small way that she could do, and though she had been offered a room, she had not used it. Several quick naps had kept her conscious for most of the night and the following day, and it was one such nap that she had fallen in to after leaving the hub of activity to avoid being an upsetting influence in her wave of distress. A sound, however, had awoken Aurora only a short time late, the sound of something being heaved against the wall. Startling sharply, she sat straight up in the chair and turned, finding the last person she thought she would ever find throwing things at walls.

Narcissa Black Malfoy.

With an unladylike curse, the journal Narcissa had thrown was followed by a vase and then a frame photograph, the last two shattering against the wall with a resounding crash. She had thought she was alone, for the room was not the center of activity, and remained unaware that she was being watched.

"Damn her, damn her to the deepest pits of hell!" she swore, a figurine smashing on the wall a moment later.

Regulus, who had been studying the third letter over and over (he had studied them all multiple times and had just worked his way back to the third one) when he heard the bang. He jumped to his feet and darted into the room, mildly thankful to find that it was just Narcissa and Aurora, and also disappointed that it had not been a sign of his daughter's return.

"Damn who?" He asked, his voice tired and old. It might not have been years since his daughter was stolen from under his nose, but Regulus much looked as though it had. It was not that he had lost everything that he had to live for, no, he had other family in Narcissa and Rabastan and Carina and the others, including Aurora now, but that the light had been stolen from his day, hope and purity and all that was good was gone and he felt as though nothing could ever be right again. What if his little girl's innocence had been stolen by some crazy monster? What if she were killed? What if she were returned but not the same trusting little girl? What if....

He groaned, he had been zoning out. Rabastan, who was here on some sort of temporary leave to assist them and answer questions, had followed him into the room, and he could clearly see that Regulus had fallen into one of those introspective moods again. It seemed that when he wasn't fighting sleep or combing the country side he sat there as quietly as he could, lost in thought, though thankfully he was quiet busy with looking for his daughter and didn't often have time to indulge himself like that.

"Any news?" Rabastan asked quietly, putting a hand on Regulus's arm reassuringly. "Anything else?"

In the process of levitating another item to hurl at the wall, Narcissa paused at the sound of Regulus' voice behind her, the vase falling to the floor where it hovered. She had not meant her actions to be witnessed or even heard, for others to see her composure leave her entirely, but right now the ability to regain it was beyond her.

"Bella, that traitor!" she hissed, turning on him with fury in her eyes. It was only then that she spotted Aurora and realized her departure from gentility had been witnessed in its entirety. The rest of her tirade died on her lips.

It was not hard for Aurora to grasp that being elsewhere right now would be easiest for them, even if her own sense of privacy was not in play to influence her perception. After all, 'Bella' was not a name commonly heard, even if Bellatrix Black Lestrange was infamous. "I think I would like some tea," she said quietly, moving to the door. "If you all will excuse me." With that, she slipped out into the corridor.

"What?" Regulus growled. "What do you mean, she's a traitor? Does she know where Carina is? Does one of her henchmen have her?" Regulus flexed and then clenched his hands. "If she knows where my daughter is and she doesn't alert me to her whereabouts...if she knows where MY Carina is and she doesn't do everything in her power to bring her back to me..."

Regulus all but erupted with a furious snarl, not caring that Aurora and Rabastan and anyone else in the world could see. He let out a furious sound, punching the wall in an all too rare display of anger. "Someone knew where she is! Regardless of how negligent I was to not see her taken, someone must have seen her taken! Someone must have seen her since, someone must have heard her crying or seen her, she's such a pretty little girl, not the type that you forget."

"We'll find her..." Rabastan said softly, resting a hand on Regulus's back firmly.

Regulus groaned, too tired and worried to truly apologize or even feel really sorry about his outburst, but his cheeks colored slightly. "Damn it...I'm sorry, Narcissa," He noticed Aurora had left, and he wondered for a moment whether she had heard anything about Bella, what she knew and what she didn't, and if she had seen him explode. "Damn it." he repeated.

Though she had left, Aurora had not gone far when she heard Regulus' response and though she knew she should keep walking, a terrible curiosity gripped her. What did Bellatrix Black Lestrange have to do with Carina? Why would the Death Eaters want the girl, who was a pureblood? But it was the sound of impact and his anguished words that nearly made her turn around, wanting to offer comfort, feeling the now-familiar pang of guilt over not looking for Carina first after the impact on the street. She needed to walk away, give them their privacy. But soon ti seemed no more sound was coming from the room, so she retreated.

Narcissa's voice was quiet, cautious of the fact Aurora had only just exited the room, though her fury was apparent as ground out her words while pointing her wand, blanketing the door in warded silence. "The kidnapper's replies reveal this likely is related to the Death Eaters, too many things gave him or her away. Bella will do nothing because she refuses to accept 'Aiden Sarcelles' is family, refuses to admit her Cause is a worthless, dead one and nothing like what we all once thought we were following. I have told her if Carina is not returned tonight, I will imprison every last one of her Death Eaters until Carina is found."

Despite her fury, a fear was forming, a fear of what this had to do with 'Aiden Sarcelles' if this was about purist beliefs, other than Bellatrix's own double at to his bloodline.

Regulus nodded. "Thank you." He said, knowing how hard it must be for her to stand against her own sister and brother in law but thankful that she would go to bat so to speak, not that there would have been doubt, but it was still somethign to demonstrate how many people cared for him and his little girl.

"I will murder whoever is behind this." He said, his voice fierce and quiet. "I mean it, Narcissa, I don't care if it's her or someone else, if they have a problem with you or I they should take it up with one of us, not the children. They have no control over what we do, who we are. It's not her fault.."

"Bella?" Until now, the idea that it might be Bellatrix had not even occurred to Narcissa. She knew how Bellatrix would not tolerate others doing things to upset or endanger her, fiercely protective most of the time, but then Bellatrix had not seemed very angry at the idea one of her Death Eaters could have done this. In fact, she had done nothing but question about Aiden, question in ways Narcissa had tried to avoid outright lying in answering her.

"Do you think Carina would have told her kidnapper the truth about you?" she asked, wanting to ask anything but that question, anything. Carina was a six-year-old child, what chance did she stand against subtle interrogation or outright... she couldn't finish the thought, let alone speak it. Suddenly the idea Carina had been kidnapped by a moral zealot was far preferable.

"I..." Regulus trailed off, remembering his sweet assertive little girl. "She'd likely start bossing them about and telling them not to talk to her since she doesn't talk to strangers. It never seems to work, she always does, but I think in that situation she would resist."

Ah, but this wasn't JUST about her.

"If they could convince her that they weren't strangers, perhaps if they said something to make a connection between them and her, she might think it was alright to trust them, indeed, she likely could be convinced that this was some grand surprise orchestrated for her."

"I'll turn myself in." It was the desperate move of a man caught between a rock and a hardplace. "I'll exchange her for myself and they'll let her go." Never mind that they had tried to kill him the first time, never mind that they likely would be even MORe mad this time, he wanted Carina returned, and how didn't matter anymore. "I'll do whatever they as, I'll bow and lick Bella's boots ifI have to, but they have to return her, or find the bastard who has her and convince him to let her go."

"Reggie, no." Two parts were at war within Narcissa, fighting for dominance in reacting to him. One was the motherly, sisterly part that had always protected him, always done everything she could to see him happy and safe, one that had suffered horribly at his 'death'. The other was the understanding of a parent, knowing she would do anything, including sacrifice herself, to protect Draco... to protect Draco, Allyssa and Carina, those she loved, and thus knowing that Regulus would do the same, he could do nothing else.

She cast a glance toward Rabastan, a silent plea for she knew not what. While she knew Bellatrix, he knew Rodolphus, and there could be no consideration of the possibilities behind this kidnapping, Death Eater or non-DE, without knowing all the elements.

Rabastan looked back at Narcissa, just as at a loss as to how to deal with this. He could imagine that he would do the same were he in Regulus's horrible position. He would likely give himself to the worst type of imaginable evil if he thought that it would help even a little bit. If he imagined Allyssa in danger he would do anything necessary to allow her to be safe.

Regulus shook his head. "No, no, Cissy, you're right. One of them has her, either Bella and Rodolphus Lestrange or one of their little minions. I'm going to go to them, to darling Bellatrix and that bastard husband of hers, and I'm going to tell the that I'll do whatever they demand in order to get her released. When Carina is free, then I'll get free from them, I did it the first time when they set out to do me in and I'll do it this time. I just can't sit here and know whose hands she's in and just do nothing!"

"Nor can you walk into the midst of them not knowing if it will even get her back!" Narcissa exclaimed, moving forward to take his hands in hers. After finally becoming comfortable in gaining family again after so many years of loss, in the matter of a day she was watching that comfort crumble, people once more slipping away unless she did something, anything within her power, to stop it.

"We do not know for certain, Regulus, I only know what I have observed. If that assumption is wrong and this is that madwoman behind those insane journal entries instead, going to them will only put you in danger, take you away when you could be needed here at any moment."

A tapping on the glass drew her attention away. It was another owl. With a wave, Narcissa opened the window to admit the creature.

Regulus went to fetch the owl, cursing after scanning the contents. He wanted sleep. Not sleep where you slept and woke up but sleep that either lasted until things were better leaving you blissfully oblivious or the type of sleep where you woke up and discovered that the present horrors had been nothing more than a nightmare. But sleep wasn't possible, not more than his eyes closing involuntarily to lead to a brief sleep tortured by more dreams of what could be happening with his daughter.

He cursed loudly again, reading the letter once more. He knew it was likely just the words of a mad person, but each time he read that he wasn't going to get Carina back it tore through him.

"Well even if it's not what I need to do, I can't just sit here. I have to do something. What if she's hurt? What if she's being hurt? Gods, one of the letters said that she was crying, she's frightened and missing home and us..."

Narcissa gently took the letter and read it, then passed it to Rabastan as she addressed Regulus. "Stop," she said quietly, voice firm. "No one is hurting Carina. Whoever had her wants to hurt you and they have determined you will be hurt more by having her kept away while they taunt you, so they will continue to do so. You need to keep up your strength, go eat something for me, please? Even something light. A sandwich, have some tea, even if it is while you inform everyone of the next owl. The Aurors will want to see this one as well, to compare it with the others so that profiling individual can further help them. Do that, focus on that for right now, and after they have determined what to do next and you have eaten, then we will see what is next."

She cupped his face between her hands, meeting his gaze. "I love you, Reggie, and I will not let you suffer this alone, but neither will I let you risk yourself on unknowns, not when it means you would be away when Carina might very well find her way home. She is very clever, that daughter of yours, and might well have the kidnapper wrapped around her finger by this point."

Regulus smiled quietly, remembering his Carina. It was not that hard to imagine she might have wrapped her kidnappers around her little finger, after all, she had done the same thing to him when she was less than an hour old, resting so snugly in the crook of his arm. She had seemed too fragile, he had tried to persuade her mother to hold her instead, he was SO afraid that he would somehow hurt her, not hold her the right way or that he would drop her. Yes, there was something about little girls that turned their fathers to mush, but he wasn't sure if kidnappers were as easily swayed.

"I love you too, Cissa." he said unsteadily. He considered before nodding, giving in moderately. "I'll have one of the house elves get me a sandwich." he said, pulling back to begin to pace once more. A sandwich would be quicker, easier if he had to run out swiftly. He wasn't hungry, it seemed he had no appetite since Carina was missing, but he would eat to keep up his strength. "I don't know how to describe it, if I want to be out there searching for her or here in case some news or another owl with a demand comes."

"You want to be everywhere at once, I know," Narcissa observed softly, "but you will go where you need to be, where it is necessary, rather than risk yourself needlessly." It was not a question or a request, it was a firm certainty, both in knowing Regulus would want to be where he was best helping the search and in knowing she would not allow him to sacrifice himself. She kissed his cheek and then released him to go return to his efforts.

Having gotten a cup of tea, more to occupy her hands and give the others privacy than any real thirst, Aurora made her way back to the hub of activity. Despite being within Hogwarts' walls during the war, she had not gone untouched and despite that, it still shocked her what harm others would visit upon innocent children in their quest for an idealistic life. This kidnapper was no better than a Death Eater, even if no connection was there, for he or she was doing the same thing, punishing innocents in the pursuit of madness-inspired ideals.

Regulus gave Narcissa a thankful look. "Thank you..." He said quietly, growing swiftly frustrated with pacing the room and doing nothing. "I think I need to move though or something, do SOMETHING productive even if it's just going to see if they've found any new leads or if the aurors have uncovered anything." He gave her a quick hug and then walked out of the room, going toward the room that had been taken over as the hub of the efforts to find Carina.

Regulus saw Aurora walking in that direction too, feeling relief. Her presence was calming to say the least. "Aurora..." he walked swiftly to her, hugging her close for a moment. Though he had noticed her presence several times since Carina's disappearance, he was struck then by how happy he was that she was there. She had been there at the time, she had seen as much as he had, and yet she didn't seem to think him a horrible neglectful person, that was worth something. "Thank you for staying." He drew back, raking a hand through his hair. "I'd have been lost without you."

Rabastan went to Narcissa, putting his arm aroudn her waist. He knew this had to be hard for her as well, after all, she had been playing something of a surrogate mother to Carina since Regulus and the girl arrived, and she was being strong for Regulus now as well. Silently he wanted to show her that he was there for her too. "My brother and your sister don't have her, they can't, can they?" He whispered his words to her, wanting desperately to believe the best about them but the evidence suggested otherwise. "I know they have done some awful things in the past but they wouldnt' target and threaten a child...would they?"

To say the hug was unexpected was an understatement. Aurora tensed with surprise, but her arms went around him just the same. For a moment, a brief and fanciful moment, she reveled in that hug, in having him hold her in his arms, before the guilt returned. How dare she try to profit from a situation she had helped to cause by not paying attention where she should have, when she should have? His gratitude only made it worse.

"It is the least I could do after everything," she said softly, the words coloured by that guilt, dark lashes shadowing her eyes as she looked down.

The moment Rabastan's arm went around her, Narcissa turned into him, resting her chin on his shoulder as she released a shuddering breath. The situation was taxing, but even more because they knew nothing. Even the most terrible moments of her life had had a reason, a person or Cause to blame, but there were so many possibilities here that it left her with a constant feeling of being smothered slowly.

"I hardly know anymore," she whispered back, the feeling pressing down on her responsible, for the door was still warded. "Would they? And why? And more, what would they do if they found out who "Aiden" truly is?"

Regulus shook his head. "You could have gone home. I'm sure a lot of people would have just gone home...but I'm really grateful that you didn't." She must think he was awful, being so helpless and clueless and for not keeping a tighter reign on Carina to begin with. Truth be told, he didn't WANT to keep a tighter reign on his daughter. Not out of laziness, or a lack of parenting skills as some might believe, but because he wanted Carina to feel free to explore the world without fear. "Do you know anything more than I do?" He asked, momentarily forgetting whether she had been headed toward the mass of people concentrated on finding Carina or if she was coming from there.

Bastan frowned, considering. He could only imagine how Bellatrix would react if she knew that Regulus were alive, that the girl that she had abducted was his own child. Her reaction probably wouldn't be a good one and Rodolphus, while normally charming with pureblooded women, had little experience with children, and Carina had a challenging personality to deal with when things were going awry. He sincerely hoped that the people who had her were patient and kind to her, whoever they were.

It was selfish, but all he could think of was how relieved he was that Allyssa was safe. He oculdnt even imagine what he would have done were the situations reversed.

"Your sister certainly took his leaving the first time hard." he observed cautiously. "I sincerely hope she doesn't know..for his sake and Carina's."

"Of course I couldn't go home," Aurora said, looking up at him with mild disbelief in her expressive eyes. She was about to say more when she spotted the parchment in his hand. "Is that another owl? Have they made a ransom demand?" she prayed they had, for she knew money seemed to be no object with this family and thus Carina would be back soon.

Old anger surfaced then and Narcissa's hand clenched where it rested on his side. "She had absolutely no right to take his desire to leave in the way she did, he is her blood, that should have been foremost in her mind. It was not as though he ran off with a Muggle, he simply no longer wanted to-" She broken off, for as old as the anger was, so too was the knowledge that arguing against it was futile. She had always sensed Bellatrix had grieved more for Regulus' 'betrayal' that she had his actually death and it had infuriated her, infuriated her and made her grief even greater. No longer, though, did she have to deal with that grief.

"If I find out they ones who took Carina, who are baiting Regulus with those owls and those journal responses to me, are Bellatrix and Rodolphus themselves rather than another Death Eater, I will kill them both," she vowed.

Reluctantly, because he was even now embarrassed at the degree of guilt for this that the letters indicated was his, he handed the letter to her. "No ransom demand." he said, looking away as he didn't want to see her response as she read it. "I wish they would just issue one and get it over with." If she were being held for money that would be simple enough to resolve, but if this truly were about something he had done...well that would be far more difficult, and he might never get her back. That was unacceptable.

Rabastan looked away. He was in the most delicate of situations, because he had been extremely close to both Bellatrix and Rodolphus both as brother and sister in law but because they had lived the same hard life for so long. However, they couldn't think that it was alright to target a child for her father's mistakes. Why, if that was true his own Allyssa could be next, stolen for punishment of him checking into the centre. "Whoever it is..." he said firmly. "They can't get away with it. There's no telling where or how Carina is doing right now, and her father is worried sick, to say nothing of the rest of us or the fact what they did is just so WRONG...no, she's got to come back soon, and whoever has her has got to pay."

Aurora's heart fell at his words, for without a demand, how would this next play out? She took the owl he handed to her with a sense of foreboding. Reading the words, anger filled her and then, perhaps shockingly to anyone who witnessed it, she crumpled the note in her hand. "This person is completely mad, how can they believe that journal entry, let alone have done this because of that? If only I had paid attention..."

Shaking her head, Narcissa pulled away. There was no time now for speculation, for feeling pain or giving in to further anger. Quietly, she moved to mend and replace the items she had broken and then turned back to him. "We should return and see what the next step is," she said quietly, feeling an overwhelming sense of impotency about this whole situation.

"Shhhh..." Impulsively Regulus pulled her in for another quick hug, his hand patting her back tentatively. "It's not your fault. She's my daughter and I was distracted so easily...but it's not my fault either. It's whoever has her that's done this, and it's them that will pay." he glanced down at the note she had crumpled up, quite surprised at the rare display of anger. "They will pay." he repeated.

Rabastan nodded, boldly taking her hand in his, because he didn't care what anyone else thought at a time like this about his relationship with Narcissa. "Let's go." He knew that there was no new news, they would have heard some sort of excited sound if it were so, but she was right, they had to at least try. Doing nothing wasn't helping anyone.
