Shopping and kidnapping; Diagon Alley [AS, RB, CSB, BBL, RL]
WHO: Aurora, Regulus, Carina, Bellatrix, Rodolphus
WHERE: Diagon Alley
WHEN: Wednesday, 29 December, 1999; early evening
SUMMARY: Regulus takes Carina to get a telescope with the aide of Aurora; Bella and Roddy have a change of plans. COMPLETED THREAD.
RATING: PG-13 for subject matter?

"Oh, look at that!"

Aurora's head turned quickly in the direction that Carina had suddenly taken off in, mild amusement touching her features as she watched the little blonde skip. What it was Carina had seen, she was not certain, but no doubt they would soon hear a detailed explanation of it and why it was so exciting if they did not follow. They, of course being herself and Aiden.

Not for the first time this afternoon, her gaze slanted toward him and then away before she was caught. When he had suggested this excursion in order to choose the right telescope for a belated Christmas gift of Carina's, she had read only a far different intent in it, but Carina's pleading at a later lesson had secured her agreement. Try as she had to remain in a professional capacity alone, it seemed Aiden Sarcelles was not a man to take rebuff lightly. It was not that she felt no attraction to him, it was that the opposite was true and past experience had taught her than the things she felt so strongly about were those things that needed to be treated with the greatest caution and even suspicion. Yet, here she was, just the same, shopping with he and his daughter, a process that had long since gone beyond finding a telescope.

Regulus smiled, watching with amusement as Carina scampered off. He half expected to hear her chattering on in her own strange mixture of English and French about what she saw. He was pleased beyond words that Aurora had chosen to come with them. Granted, he knew that a good deal of that had to do with his daughter's charming pleading at their last lesson, but he didn't care. Regulus appreciated the adult company, and particularly that it was Aurora's company.

It had been odd, the last few months. The more time he spent around her, the more he saw of the careful, skillful way she had of making Carina anticipate their lessons with glee, the more he began to be intrigued by her. She wasn't like many of the women he had met since his return. They were interested in the poor seemingly wealthy and well connected widower. None of them had been brazen enough to throw themselves at him, but he had heard the whispers, seen the glances. No, Aurora was different, reserved and independent and so damned confusing that a man could spend a lifetime just trying to figure her out. She was beautiful, but more than just a pretty face. Intelligent, but with such a personality that she could make him laugh and think. Engaging for adult conversation yet still gifted in dealing with his daughter.

And there were the scars. He had taken to studying her when he thought she wouldn't notice, and he had noticed one small, faint scar near her hairline, and another near her eyes. It led him to wonder if there were others he had missed, and how exactly she had gotten scars in such places. They were too small and faint to be from dueling, he decided, but he had yet to come up with another explanation, and not having any answer was maddening. He wanted to ask her about them, about a great many things but he worried that she was so busy pegging him in the very professional role of the father of her pupil that she wouldn't open up that much. She was more than happy to share minor details, where she grew up, about her education and teaching credentials, but some things he knew were divided by that wall of being professional, and that was maddening as well.

But today wasn't like that. Today was about Carina, and him enjoying one of the rare excursions Aurora had agreed to. He pointed out something in a shop just ahead. "A galleon says that she'll spot that in a moment and insist on showing it to us."

Though Aurora turned her head in Aiden's direction and smiled, she did not quite meet his eyes. It was an deep-seated habit with men she was attracted to that she had never fully broken. "I have no doubt she will," she said, looking again to where Carina was. "She's going to show us the contents of Diagon Alley bit by bit, I th-"

"Brave of him, showing his face here so soon."
"Isn't that-"
"It is! Oh, how delicious-"
"That poor child, that must be her-"
"Oh, I say, looks like it isn't just her with the deviancy then, it's him too if he's got other witches-"

Sharp hearing, honed from years of teaching children intent on gossiping during class, caught both the murmurs and the looks and then what Aurora had been about to say went unfinished. It made her angry, to hear strangers talking about Aiden like that, but her foremost thought right now was for Carina, who was headed right toward the gaggle of gossiping people. Much closer, and there was a chance names would be dropped and then Aurora could only imagine the scene. She doubted Carina was even aware of the recent journal entry, but she knew that if the girl heard one word spoken ill of her aunt or father, there would be hell to pay.

"Oh, Carina, look at these," she suddenly exclaimed with an open excitement that was quite unlike her normal demeanor, waving her hand to quickly draw Carina's attention. It was necessary, though, but not overtly fake despite the deliberateness of it. It was a precious few seconds before she found something to actually be the object of attention, moving toward it.

"Ooo!" The ruse had worked and Carina was drawn back towards them, rather than closer to the gossiping witches. "Ooo, Professeur, they're beautiful! Aren't they, Papa?" Saved by a window display of hair ornaments, it seemed.

Regulus frowned slightly, unsure of what Aurora was doing until they moved away from cluster of gossipers and he realized what had happened. They earned a sharp look as he turned from them, following Aurora and Carina to look at the hair ornaments. "Aren't they lovely?" He asked softly, giving Aurora a thankful look. He wanted to say thank you, to mouthe it so that Carina wouldn't see and question what was going on, but she didn't meet his eyes, an action that made him more curious than ever as to what was going on.

He nodded to the window. "Perhaps we'll come back later and pick out a few of them for you and a few for Allyssa, would you like that, sweetheart?" He frowned, looking down at her. She didn't deserve this, none of it. She didn't deserve to lose her mother, to be forced to help him carry on this double life, to have people gossiping about her. She was an angel, she always had been, HIS little angel, and to think of someone saying something horrible about her when the fault had been no one but that damned gossiping woman's...well it infuriated him.

"Yes, oh yes, and those for Tante Cissa, she likes blue stones," Carina chirruped happily, pointing a small finger at hairpins with sapphires in it. Then, with a swift swish of blonde hair, her attention was on another corner of the window. "That one! That one for Professeur Sinistra," she exclaimed, drawing their attention to a hair clip shaped almost like a star, the stone in it a deep purple, then grinned at Aurora. "You like it, don't you? She would look pretty, wouldn't she Papa?" She looked between the adults then bounced, never still long, then took both their hands. "Let's go get them now!"

Aurora, startled, blinked down at the child for a moment before shaking her head gently. "Carina, I couldn't possibly accept something like that, though it is very sw-"

"Papa didn't get you any Christmas gift, it could be your present!" Carina said then bestowed her most charming smile upon Aurora, innocently manipulative.

At last, Aurora turned to Aiden, her look almost imploring. If he indulged Carina, the shopkeeper would no doubt gossip about him buying gifts for her and she did not want to add to speculation at all. She herself did not believe any of the nonsense, she had seen how Narcissa Malfoy behaved with Carina and with Aiden as well and could tell there was family affection, sisterly affection even, but no emotions meant for sordid sex scandals, but it was clear others did and would be happy for any other juicy tidbits.

Regulus leaned down, whispering in Carina's ear. He could see that Aurora was looking at him, how she looked so imploring. Likely she didn't want to see her name linked with his the way that Narcissa's had been, and while that 'article' had been rubbish and while any article that said anything unkind about Aurora would be rubbish, he still wouldn't pull her down.

"Let's get your Professeur a surprise gift later, a belated Christmas present and a thank you as well for helping us today. It will be our little secret, hmm?." He said the words quietly in French, so that if someone by chance did overhear them hopefully they wouldn't' know the language.

Standing, he gave Aurora a smoothe smile, one that he hoped apologized for him.

Carina listened patiently, her smiling growing as he spoke, then she nodded gleefully. "Oui, Papa!" she said with relish and beamed at Aurora. She said nothing, however, just beamed then scampered off to the next window.

That beaming smile left Aurora with the vague feeling she was being conspired against. Had they been speaking in Spanish, she could have perhaps sussed out a bit of it had she heard it at the right volume, but the Fast French and the whispers left her in the dark. Still, at least Aiden would be spared any situations adding to the newly incendiary atmosphere that followed him in public.

"Thank you. I didn't want to make things worse for you," she murmured in a low tone, one she knew would not carry to Carina even if the girl came right back.

Regulus watched as Carina scampered off to the next window. "You're very welcome." he said quietly, giving Aurora a slightly embarrassed smile. "It would hardly look fitting if a trusted Hogwarts professor joined Narcissa and I in the muddy gutter of public opinion."

His jaw clenched, frowning as he saw his daughter's blonde head get just a bit further away. "I just don't want all of this to effect her. She's so young and lost too much to have to deal with seeing this nonsense. She deserves better and..." he sighed softly. "And you came to help with a telescope today, not listen to me rant. I'm sorry, Aurora."

Regarding him with a small amount of surprise, Aurora shook her head. "That's rubbish," she said, frowning in distaste. "One, that you are in some sort of gutter and two, that 'fitting' has anything to do with anything. You are a good man and Narcissa Malfoy has done more for the wizarding world than those gossips combined. If I am in some place with the both of you, I think it would be good company indeed."

She looked away then, knowing the passion of her opinion had come across in her words, looking after Carina as well to cover her action. "And Carina deserves far better, you have every right to be upset, so don't apologize."

Regulus gave her a slightly more enthusiastic smile. She never ceased to amaze, this woman, who truly seemed to be after making things easier on him rather than protecting herself from the scorn of public opinion. Well, thankfully he was going to make sure that that horrid woman didn't write anything further about his family. He wasn't sure how but he knew that he would.

"Thank you." he said softly. "You're a strength to Carina and I in a very uncertain time. Narcissa is involved enough in this as it is, so I don't feel right letting her know how unhappy it makes me. I'm glad that you came today."

Bellatrix, who at the moment did not look like Bellatrix, let her eyes widen despite her intention to keep a neutral mask on her polyjuiced face. Who did this bastard think he was, implying that Cissy was "too involved" and made him unhappy? Not having the aid of the full conversation, she jumped to conclusions and her temper flared, wanting to end him here on the street, but she knew that the plan she and Rodolphus had devised would be more beneficial in the end. To keep from grabbing her wand impulsively she let her hands fist at her sides.

Fair cheeks pinkened sightly at the compliment and Aurora lowered her head. "You're too kind," she said softly, not meeting his gaze. "Carina is a delight, I'm happy to do something that brings her pleasure like this." She paused and then glance to her side briefly, holding his eyes only a moment before looking away. "And I can imagine what it's like, to have to deal with something so troubling on your own. I'm grateful you consider me someone that you can share that burden with. It's very... flattering."

Rodolphus was growing quickly displeased with the entire situation. Sarcelles hadn't parted from the side of this woman the entire time they had been tracking him and it would make it impossible to spirit him off without causing some sort of scene. The child complicated things further, darting back and forth without any apparent consistency, adding yet another person to worry about. If only Sarcelles would wandered ahead like his daughter, just once.

And then the idea hit him. It was not his first choice, but it would be far easier in both execution and then later information extraction and would given them a bargaining chip if they learned something that upset Bellatrix or angered him. They would grab the girl.

Nonchalantly slipping his arms around Bellatrix, as if they were no more than just young lovers out for a stroll and could not keep their hands off each other, he pulled her off to the side and dropped his head to her ear beneath the bright gold curls she currently had. "The girl. We will grab her, get information from her and then bargain with Sarcelles for anything else we want to know."

Regulus studied the pink of her cheeks. She really was a striking woman, Aurora, and she was understanding too. It was almost impossible to think that there was a woman so perfect and understanding and yet here she was. "I'm glad." He said simply.

Bellatrix giggled girlishly, only adding to the notion of young lovers as she contemplated the idea. While she normally didn't target children directly, certainly not after Ares's death, she decided that as they were not going to hurt the girl, merely use her for a bargaining chip against her dangerous father and extract information from her, perhaps it would be the best alternative. Sarcelles seemed intent on sticking too close to the professor for them to steal him away. "Agreed." She said softly, so that only Rodolphus could hear. "We'll take her and learn what we can from her and go from there."

Smiling as Carina waved to them and then darted further ahead, Aurora stopped for a moment in front of a small bookshop, a much smaller establishment than Flourish and Blott's, one that catered to special areas of study and rarer books. The cover of one caught her eye and she drew closer. "Good heavens, I had no idea this was still in print," she said with surprise.

Satisfied, Rodolphus pulled her closer to whisper instructions. "When she is far enough ahead and distracted, I will give you the signal I am ready. Jostle these two, distract them for a few moments and I will grab the girl then. Meet me in the Cornwall hideout." With that, he released her and slipped into the anonymity of the crowd.

Ahead of the adults, Carina was gaily conversing with a witch at the same window display as her, never shy with strangers at all. She had discovered the woman spoke a bit of French and together they were admiring the magical creatures within.

Rodolphus approached, a personal look on the young face that was his at the moment, and leaned in overtop Carina as if wanting to see the animals, catching the end of their conversation as the woman moved away.

"[It is a very fine animal, but there is another shop where the Kneazle kits are much prettier, just down that way right there,]" he said, giving her a charming smile as he pointed around the corner.

'[Really? Oh, thank you!]" Carina exclaimed joyfully, beaming at him for his help and his use of French, and took off in that direction. As she did, Rodolphus turned and touched his fingers to his forehead as if lost in thought, the signal to Bellatrix, for even this stolen body from was tall and easily seen, and then started after Carina. A moment later, his arm was around her waist, his hand on her mouth and they had disappeared into a side alley.

Bellatrix nodded at Rodolphus when he touched his forehead, going swiftly to the two adults, a story already forming in her mind. She was a fairly capable actress when she wanted to be, and now she definitely did. "Pardon me!" She bumped into Aiden, bumping him hard enough intentionally to knock him into Aurora. "I'm so sorry..."

"Excuse me..." Regulus said, his hands going out to steady Aurora and once he was certain she was steady the stranger who had bumped into him. "Are you alright..." He was a gentleman if nothing else, and if a woman literally ran into them she had to be distracted with something.

"I just seem to be turned around a little." Channelling one of the mindless blonde simpletons she went to school with, she batted her eyelashes up at Aiden. "Can you point me to Flourish and Blott's? I'm supposed to be meeting a friend there."

Regulus turned full around, pointing her in the right direction. It was something that he would regret later, wonder later if his daughter had been taken when his guard was down, but then he didn't think anything of it at the moment other than doing what he always tried to do now, the best that he could. He never guessed anyone would be after his little girl, after all, they weren't Blacks but Sarcelles's now, and they had no known enemies. Carina knew, also, to stay within eye sight, so turning around for a moment wasn't something he even thought about. He had just seen his daughter's blonde head straight ahead.

"Just that way and you'll spot it on your left." he said, nodding. He even made sure that she was going in the right direction before turning around to face Carina and Aurora.

But Carina was gone. She wasn't where she had been before the blonde young woman ran into them, and he didn't see her anywhere. His heart hammered in his chest for a moment, his mouth went dry, but he knew Carina wouldn't wander far. "Come on..." he said to Aurora, his voice tense. "She's likely darted into a shop while we were distracted."

Bellatrix smirked as she walked away. It had been too easy, really. Whoever Sarcelles was he was no match for Lestrange ingenuity.

When Aiden smacked into her, Aurora grasped at him instinctively to keep from hitting the glass window of the shop's display. Smiling and murmuring she was all right, she let Aiden give the clumsy young woman directions as she gave the book one last intent look over then checked for Carina as she had been doing all day. Those few moments she spent looking at the book, instead of for Carina first, would be the ones to haunt Aurora later. This time, she did not easily spot the girl. Certain blonde hair would be visible in a moment when that woman moved aide, she waited a stepped forward a few steps. No, then certainly once that couple moved out of direct view. No. It was then that Aurora felt her heart stop. She turned to Aiden, just as he turned back to her.

"But you told her to stay outside unless we went in with her," she said, concerned and fearful as she followed quickly after Aiden. Though Carina was willful and energetic, she was also relatively obedient and if Aiden had told her to stay outside and within eyesight and easy reach, she would not have done otherwise. No, she would have come back and pulled them to a shop if she had wanted to go in.

"Carina? Carina?" she called over the noise of the crowd. She drew some stares but ignored them "Carina? Carina Sarcelles, come here please!" Someone called 'miss' and she looked to the side, gaze landing on a plump woman who approached them.

"Are you looking for a little blonde girl who speaks French? She did say her name was Carina. She was right there in front of the menagerie a few moments ago, when I walked away she was speaking with a young man about Kneazles in another shop, I think? My French isn't that good. Such a friendly child, though I didn't realize there was another menagerie in Diagon Alley, so I'm likely mistaken-"

"Carina..." Regulus's voice shook as he searched with her. "Carina, come here to your Papa right now! Carina!"

He waited as the plump woman approached them, anticipating that she would tell him that his daughter had gotten turned around, that she was crying somewhere and waiting on him but fine. What he heard, however, was not that. A chill ran through him and everything turned to the side, forcing him to swiftly grip onto a nearby bench to keep from falling over. "No...there is no other menagerie..." he had to be strong now, he told himself, had to ensure that he didn't fall apart, not before Carina was found.

"And the man..." he said, focusing on the other part that this woman had offered in her explanation. "What did he look like, which way did they go? Did you happen to catch his name?" His voice sounded desperate even to him. He needed something, anything to focus on, his little girl couldn't have just vanished into nothing with some strange man while he wasn't looking. He had turned away. His back had been to his only child and she was gone now, taken as a punishment of sorts for his own neglectfulness. Gods...

The woman frowned. "They were still at the menagerie window when I left, I didn't look back. He was tall, light brown hair, wearing glasses. Said something about Kneazles around the corner, I think, but again I'm not sure. Perhaps you ought to call the authorities. I'll go in that shop and have them Floocall for someone." She turned and moved off to the shop she had gestured toward.

Aurora had already taken off toward the menagerie, praying Carina was inside, but when she emerged a few moments later, to hear the woman tell Aiden she was getting the authorities, it was without Carina. Thinking in a panic, she turned the corner and encountered a crooked street with an eventual path to Knockturn Alley, calling again for Carina as she did. There she was approached by another strange claiming to have seen a young man grab a small child and disappear down an alley. Sparing no time for disgust that someone would see that and not act, she dashed down the alley, hoping to find Carina before whoever it was could Apparate away. But the Alley, a dead end, was empty.

Regulus went the opposite way, running at every blonde child that he could see, hope blinding him to the fact that this blonde girl was far taller than his Carina, that one far less slender, that one wearing the wrong colour of clothing. None. None of them were his little girl. He didn't care when people sent him sideways glances, didn't notice how parents pulled their child away from the madman. No, all that he noticed was that Carina was gone. His heart, the soul reason he had been able to make it through his wife's death...gone. How was it possible? His only consolation was the feeling of loss he had the moment that his wife died, as though all of the light had gone from the room and would never come on--he knew that were Carina truly hurt or killed, he would FEEL it. Somewhere, wherever she was, his little girl was alive.

He might not have much but he had that.

His eyes too bright, his gait unsteady, he went to find Aurora. Carina wasn't here anymore, he knew that much, no matter how much he wanted to deny it. He'd be damned if Aurora was taken now too. they should stick together as they searched every inch of this place, or he should ensure that she left safely...one or the other.

Gods... he thought. What I wouldn't give for a timeturner.

Reaching out to grasp the wall as her knees nearly buckled, Aurora sucked in a breath and forced herself to take the precious seconds to move the whole length of the alley in the hopes they were hidden, not vanished by Apparition. It was a foolish hope, but she had to try. When it produced nothing, she ran back, calling for Aiden by first name, a thing she rarely used. "Aiden!" Finally spotting him, she gesture toward where she had just been. "Aiden! Someone saw a tall young man take a little girl into the alley, but it's a dead end, there's no one there anymore."

Apparition meant it would be impossible now to find Carina, and as much as Aurora wanted it to not be true, Carina had been abducted. She knew it and she knew Aiden knew it. Giving it no thought, she reached out to him, grasping his upper arms, for he looked unsteady, as though any moment he would simply drop to the ground as though the ground itself had been yanked from beneath his feet like a rug.

"We need to get an Auror here," she said, visibly struggling to remain calm, to force herself not to start in on self-recriminations, for it would help no one. "They can question witnesses, get an image of this man from the memories of the witnesses, examine the alley. Let's do that, the longer we wait, the further he can get."

Regulus could do nothing but nod for a moment. He knew he needed to go fetch an auror but how to go about doing such a thing, or where to find one, alluded him in his distress. He frowned heavily, his head darting in the direction of a blonde child he saw, this one a boy, before turning back to her.

"Yes..." he said rallying little bit of strength that he had to pull himself together once more. "Yes, we need to alert the aurors, and I need to contact Narcissa as well in case Carina gets free and makes it to the manor somehow."

Thankfully then his mind began to work on other things than how damning Carina's loss would truly be to him, more practical things about how to find her and free her and bring her home where she belonged.

Watching him, Aurora hoped it meant he had direction now, but she spoke to give him some just in case. "That woman you were talking to, I think she was getting someone, go talk to them and I'll find a Floo to contact Narcissa." She hoped Narcissa Malfoy was home, even if the idea of Carina finding her way home alone seemed almost impossible, the logistics of a six-year-old, even one so incredibly precocious as Carina, frighteningly staggering.

There was no time to waist, but for a moment, Aurora paused and then squeezed his arms, the gesture surprisingly affectionate given their relationship up to this point. "We'll find her Aiden, I'm certain of it," she said and then released him, all but running to the nearest shop to use the Floo."

Regulus nodded, then turned swiftly and started to go about doing what he needed to do to get his little girl home. Woodenly he detailed what had happened, found out what little everyone else knew. It was as thought he had turned off some part of him, as though he had shut the part of him down that felt and thought like a father and widower and human. He couldn't afford to feel just now. Now all he could do was what was strictly necessary, what he had to. When his Carina was safely home and tucked into her own bed, why then he would likely fall apart entirely, but for now, for now he had to focus on getting her home.
