Daphne and Draco's Reception; Malfoy Manor [Various]
WHO: Wedding party and wedding guests
WHERE: Malfoy Manor
WHEN: 18 December, 1999; 8 p.m. and on
SUMMARY: Reception time! IN-PROGRESS THREAD.
RATING: Up to PG-13 may be in threads

Tables within the ballroom set, as the decorations for the rest of the room itself, to reflect a wintery theme to mimic the recently outdoors ceremony, a theme belied by the warmth from roaring fires in both fire places, guests ate and mingled and danced when not stopping the newlywed couple to congratulate them. Serving staff, rather than house elves, navigated the crowd with gleaming glass trays of drinks in uniquely shaped glasses, appearing more as icicles than glasses. Allyssa and Carina, still wearing their miniature white fur-edged cloaks to match Daphne's and their miniature tiaras to mimic the effect of matching without wearing something as old and priceless, darted between the guests with much giggling, skirts of their gowns flying as they careened around legs and over feet.

Daphne's hand found her husband's as Allyssa moved very close to them. She knew that Draco seemed to have almost a phobia of the children, something she found adorable and endearing all at once. Thankfully for her husband (and it seemed she couldn't think that word enough associated with him) he was spared when Allyssa dodged to avoid one very plump woman who had been one of the ones they had to invite. She laughed as she watched the girl scamper off.

In spite of such displays of affection not being exactly proper, she leaned in, kissing him fully on the lips. Mischievously she turned her head so that her lips were next to his ear, her breath ghosting over it. "Such things I've planned for you on our honeymoon, husband. I did vow to possess you after all."

Phobia was putting it lightly. From a more objective outside opinion, one might say Draco Malfoy treated children as though the phenomena of them was contagious. It was not as though he disliked children, he just was not comfortable with them and did not want any of his own. He knew it was an eventuality, but not for, hopefully a long, long time.

"Should they be running around like that?" he murmured, half annoyed question, half concern observation, having totally missed her attempts at seduction as he watched a guest nearly step on Allyssa, or so it looked to him. They were both so tiny and not everyone here was the epitome of grace.

Daphne wasn't put off by the fact that Draco didn't respond to her attempts to seduce him. Indeed, it seemed that nothing could make her unhappy today. Instead she focused on his concern for the girls.

"I doubt anyone could trample on two girls so cute as those are." She said, resting a hand on his elbow. She was glad for the chance she had had to grow closer to both of them during the wedding preparations, and she was certain that no one would dare harm them, particularly in their own home. She looked down at her hand, which was resting on his arm, and smiled. She thought her hand looked complete with ehr engagement ring, but the addition of the wedding band...well it seemed the most natural and right thing in the world.

Warmer inside than it had been outside, Meg shrugged out of the charcoal grey fur shrug over her shoulders and laid it across the seat of her chair. Worn through dinner, she was now warm, almost too much as it brought a healthy flush to the lightly tanned skin of her bare shoulders and arms. She took a moment to smooth the skirt of her dress and give a slight, discreet tug to the strapless top of it after the motions used to get out of the fur shrug, then looked around.

Where on earth had Alex gotten to anyhow? She was finding that lately she had little patience for interruptions when they were out together, and being drug off every ten minutes by some manner of business/social diversion was becoming damned annoying. Didn't these people have any concept of keeping business with business and social with social.

'Oh, you're a fine one to talk, McCormack.' Except she wasn't, she didn't do this... much.

Alex finally broke free of the woman who had all but kidnapped him to talk about some charity function that she wanted covered in the paper. Though in the past such things might have thrilled him, the chance to get quotes, his relationship with Meg was leading him closer and closer to drawing boundaries between his personal life and work, something he swore he would never do. He was here on something that was a mixture of business as well as social obligations. The plan had been to come, get a few quotes to go in the society section, and enjoy the time with Meg after that, but now that the quotes had been attained, he was beginning to resent the people pulling him this way and that, something that never would have happened before Meg.

"Sorry..." he muttered, walking swiftly toward her and kissing her on the cheek. "I didn't mean for it to take that long."

Working herself into a definite sulk, which was entirely not like her, Meg gestured over a server and took up a glass, lips warming the chilled edge of it as she surveyed the room with match-day-quality singlemindedness. Really, it was ridiculous to expect that at a function where he would be known well, especially given that Malfoy was his somewhat-boss, he wouldn't be pulled off often. It would be the same as if this were some Quidditch gala of some sort. Still... it annoyed her. Really annoyed her. Really truly annoyed her.

Annoyance fled as fast as it had come, however, with the sight of Alex coming back toward her. Though she was not aware of it, her whole posture and demeanor changed, becoming more relaxed and softer as he drew even with her.

She pressed close, as always uncaring of who might be watching. "Maybe I need to keep you visibly occupied so no one bothers you?" she questioned, flashing him a wicked smile.

Alex smiled, not caring in the least that this was his boss's wedding, or that Draco Malfoy may not care for the scene of him snogging his girlfriend right then and there. Why should he care? If Malfoy was able to be distracted by his guests today of all days...well then he wasn't married to the right woman. He laughed softly against her lips. "Maybe that's a good idea."

Alex groaned as he saw one of his staffers approaching him, and pulled her into a somewhat isolated corner, hoping the man wouldn't follow him there. "Explain to me again why we bothered to come?"

Nipping his lip, Meg went to reply but found herself quickly whisked off to a less crowded part of the room. Pushing him back as he stopped, so that they were concealed by a large arrangement of wintery-themed greenery, she laughed quietly at his question. "I don't know, because you were attempting to be a good pillar of the community? I know why I'm here, I like looking at you in dress robes." She leered playfully at him.

The wedding had been beautiful and the reception was just as lovely. Having shed the cloak worn outside for it once she was inside, Hannah was glad of it as the room warmed with all the individuals occupying it. she hadn't yet had a chance to see Ernie much, having to eat at one table and do bridal party things while he ate with her father and Hestia and, she hoped, socialized with the people they knew here. She didn't want him to be bored.

When the wedding party dance was called, she had been on her way to go find him, but she knew once this dance was over she would be able to resume that, so she cheerfully complied. Gathering her heavy silver skirts, she joined the rest of the bridal party on the floor, smiling at Aiden Sarcelles as she handed him her hand. He was such a nice man who had entertained her with all sorts of amusing anecdotes over the last few days and his daughter was very sweet - very talkative and energetic, but very sweet. Hannah was almost certain a forever friendship had been formed just because she had very long blonde hair, like Carina's and had allowed the girl to messily weave flowers into her hair during the rehearsals.

And then, midway through the dance, the child in question was at their elbow. "Papa, Papa," Carina said, tugging on his robes, treating both he and Hannah to a full-force coaxing smile, "is it my turn to dance with you now?"

"But who am I going to dance with?" Hannah asked with a laugh, then felt a tug on her sleeve. Looking down, she grinned widely at the shy smile Allyssa was giving her. Giggling, she spun the little around in a circle, her dark curls bouncing with Hannah's actions, then lifted Allyssa for the child's weight was slight. Holding tight, she danced them in place.

Having put a wide smile on Allyssa's face, she was pleased with herself, for she felt a slight sort of camaraderie with the little girl, in them both having fathers who had not always been there as much as they wanted because of the marks on their arms. Granted, her father had not been exactly comfortable (all right, near furious), when first learning Rabastan Lestrange, brother to the man who was causing so much grief to her family, would be best man and thus around her often for wedding preparations, but Hannah had made it a point to study the man, both in the Centre classes she taught and during all the preparations, and had come to the conclusion he was as unlike his brother as could be, for what experience with and knowledge of Rodolphus she had, and thus no longer felt so on alert and had then been able to befriend quiet, shy Allyssa over the last few days with less qualms about drawing his attention.

Regulus had been very pleasantly surprised by the way that the Hannah Abbott had turned out. He had expected a great many things from the girl, given that she was the daughter of the Minister of Magic, that she had been an only child her entire life...things that weren't entirely charitable and based on stereotypes that didn't evidentially fit this young lady at all. She was grounded, and gifted at her work in volunteering in the centre according to Rabastan. She was good with children as evidenced by the fact that she let Carina play hairdresser with her hair in the rehersals, something that no doubt led to knots given his daughter's zealousness. She was, in essence, a marvelous young woman, the kind that he could hope that Carina would grow up to be.

He twirled her across the floor with skill. She was quite entertaining (another pleasant surprise) and she responded well to his small jokes, a far cry from the snobby young lady that poor Rabastan had been paired with as best man. Feeling the tug at his elbow, he looked down, grinning when he saw his little pixie of a daughter dressed up to look like a little angel. Oh, she might not have wings, and a small tiara may be in the place where a halo might, but she looked so sweet and innocent that he thought that she looked lovely. He was relieved when Allyssa showed up to dance with Hannah as well, as he hated to say no to Carina no matter the circumstance but he also wouldn't just abandon Hannah.

Bending down, he scooped up his daughter, kissing her forehead as he began to slowly sway with her around the room. "You were perfect during the ceremony today, darling."

Heads together, Hannah and Allyssa giggled as Hannah swooped and swayed with the music, the movements exaggerated for the child's amusement. The song was long, but Hannah recognized it was coming to an end, a fact that made her look around briefly, seeing if she could locate Ernie, though the majority of her attention remained on Allyssa for the moment.

"Oh, I know," Carina declared with the innocent arrogance of the very young, nodding her head vehemently in agreement with Regulus as she twined her arms around his neck. "Everyone has told Allyssa and I so. They're all very smart people."

Ernie noticed the song coming to an end too, and he decided that the time had come for him to reclaim his date, even if she was a bridesmaid. Fortunately Rabastan Lestrange came and took his daughter so that Ernie could cut in without leaving the child by herself.

"Well..." he remarked after the child was gone, bowing slightly to Hannah. "As you're finally unattended, could I have the honor of dancing with you?" His words were almost playfully too proper, trying to earn a smile from her.

Regulus hid a smile, nodding very seriously. "They are very smart people indeed, particularly your father." He raised a hand high on her back, toying with one golden lock of hair. "You and Hannah have become fast friends, I'm glad for that."

Cheerfully handing over Allyssa to her father, Hannah turned and bestowed a brilliant smile on Ernie, made so both by his appearance and his play-acting. Gathering the heavy skirts, she curtsied with grace that reflected, even when one thought her happily enmeshed in casual behaviours and Muggle customs, that she was the daughter of a pureblood family that might not be as old or well-connected as the Blacks and Malfoys, was at least on equal basis as names such as Macmillan and had produced those with every bit the dignity and elegance of the older families when needed. Not that she or Ernie or her family cared about the rest of what pureblood meant, but she could still be a 'proper lady' if necessary. Or for fun.

"The honour would be mine," she said, but spoiled any sort of regal nod by the natural joy that often bubbled in her, then ruined it further by sliding her arms around his neck in a less traditional dancing posture.

Carina nodded eagerly. "Oh we have. Hannah has very pretty hair," she said seriously, then with that same uncontrollable confidence, shook her long ringlets, "like mine!"

Dominic watched carefully as his daughter started to dance with Sarcellas. He didn't know much about the man, certainly not enough to prevent him from dancing with Hannah, but the fact that he didn't know much about him was enough to put him on edge. He nodded to the guard who was supposed to be watching Rabastan Lestrange, as well as the one he had brought to the event as well. Both of them were dressed for the occasion, in fine elegant dress robes, but Dominic knew who they were...he should, he had paid them handsomely enough for the event. Yes, even guards from the centre listened when the minister of magic asked to meet them with a small sack full of Galleons. They would both ensure that Hannah and Hestia were safe, he was certain of it. Even if the younger Lestrange did seem unlike his brother, Dominic was taking no chances.

He shook his head. The guards knew what they were doing, they would make sure that Hestia and Hannah were safe, he needed to stop worrying, at least stop worrying so much. He draped his arm over the back of Hestia's chair, leaning in to whisper in her ear. "You look lovely today."

Dominic wasn't the only one watching Hannah, though Hestia's reasons were, largely, much different. What held her attention so raptly right now was watching Hannah with the little Lestrange girl. It had become a habit of late, watching how Hannah interacted with young children, even though she had already seen Hannah do it numerous times. The difference now, of course, was the fact that in less than seven months, Hannah was due to become an older sister. Would Hannah have such an easy rapport with that child?

Shaking herself out of her reverie at the brush of Dominic's warm breath against her ear, she smiled, unconsciously smoothing the gown over her stomach. "For someone retaining enough water to float a boat, you mean," she muttered disparagingly, but her smile was genuine, her expression far from sulky. Anything, even the tiniest or most random difference from her first pregnancy, was important to her on the basis of it being different.

Dominic chuckled softly, using the distraction of everyone in the room to do something unusually candid. He let his hand move over her stomach, leaning in to kiss her cheek. "Lovely by any standards, Hestia." More than anything he wished he could give her a day like today, but he pushed the idea from his mind again, determined that there was no use dwelling on things that could never be. There would be a child, a son or daughter, to hold them together.

He stood, offering her his hand. "Shall we dance?" It was selfish to want to lead the most beautiful woman in the room around the dance floor on someone else's wedding day, but Dominic had never been accused of selflessness.

Warming to the touch, something she had been unsuccessfully fighting of late, the temptation of feeling any reaction to gestures that meant attachment to this child so early, Hestia leaned into the kiss and brushed her palm briefly over the back of his hand. It was hardly a completely telling gesture, having his hand resting there, not when her stomach remained flat beyond the slight swelling of her abdomen in common first trimester fashion only noticeable when unclothed, but the offer of the dance was welcome for it gave her time to distance herself from the emotions that welled at those private touches and gestures.

"Don't you let me make a fool of myself in front of this crowd," she muttered, taking his hand. For someone used to precise movement, capable of swift action in battle, dancing was not exactly a strong suit. Oh, she could keep on her feet, avoiding the embarrassment of falling flat on her face, but she knew, or at least she thought, that graceful would never be part of the equation.

This afternoon and evening had occurred with such near-perfectness that, for some time at the reception, Narcissa found she could not relax. She knew it was quite ridiculous, but she could not shake the feeling on having so much good happen without taint. Eventually, though, she had relaxed as the evening wore on, the perfect hostess as always, but managing still to give her attention mainly to her family.

Rabastan at her side had been a large part of her eventual relaxation, for having him with her all day, when they had not been busy elsewhere, had almost been like before, when he was in the house day and night. Currently, they were on the edge of the dance floor, watching the bridal party complete their designated dance.

"Allyssa seems to have made herself a friend," she murmured, nodding toward where Allyssa was with Hannah, a rare sight for Allyssa often stayed close to those she knew best, shy more by situation than nature, for she had become unusually clinging since the holidays, no doubt due to several episodes of childish grief over Darcie's absence from such a monumental holiday for a small girl. "But I think Hannah's young man is eager to have a dance with her," she murmured, nodding in the direction of Ernie Macmillan, who was standing by the wall near the dance floor, currently watching Hannah with Allyssa.

The wedding had been an overwhelming success as far as Bastan was concerned. Draco and Daphne were happily married after a near catastrophic meltdown on Draco's part and Merlin knew what on Daphne's, no one had made a scene, no one had protested or got into a fight or done anything to take the attention off of the happy couple. All was as it should be.

He honestly wished Draco and Daphne well, both of them deserved so much after the hardships of the war and everything else. He was also quite pleased for himself, to be standing here with Narcissa on such a monumentally important day. He was proud to have had such a part in bringing the day around, both from his pep talk with Regulus when Draco almost backed out and in gently pushing Draco to follow through with the wedding.

Narcissa spoke, the soft sound of her murmur still enough to draw his gaze. Rabastan smirked, looking from the young man who was currently waiting for the honor of Hannah's affections, then to Hannah herself and Allyssa and back to Narcissa. "But who will dance with you, Cissa mine?" he asked, a devilish glint to his eyes.

In immediate answer to his question, Narcissa's laugh was equally as soft as her words had been, meant only for him. She turned her head to the side to meet his gaze, lips quirking briefly before she assumed a very prim expression. "I suppose I shall remain a wallflower while pretty girls steal your attention," she declared, lifting her chin slightly. "Though, the idea of a Black as a wallflower..."

Rabastan noticed the song was ending and, taking that as his cue, he took a step away from Narcissa. "You won't be a wallflower for long." he assured her, then moved off to fetch his daughter. He could already see the Macmillan boy heading over to Hannah, so likely she wouldn't be a wallflower either.

Reaching Hannah, he lightly tapped her lightly on the shoulder. "May I cut in?" He asked, nodding to Allyssa. He had never imagined that he would get to have a father-daughter dance, because of the way he lived, the mistakes he had made. Carefully taking Allyssa from Hannah, he lifted her into his arms, dancing her around the room with ease if not grace because for decades he had been thinking of survival alone, not luxuries such as weddings and good food and dancing.

Returning to Narcissa, he kissed Allyssa's cheek noisily. "Well look at my luck, here I am with the two belles of the ball. How am I supposed to dance with the both of you at once?"

Surveying the dancing crowd, Risa took her seat at her table again after her trip to the powder room, a secret sort of smile on her face. It had always given her a stupid sort of thrill when she overheard people being catty about her behind her back, not because she cared about being a topic of conversation, but that most had no idea how much trouble they'd be in if someone in her family ever overheard them. It might be frustrating much of the time, to be in such a protective family, but in the end she understood the emotions behind it.

Of course, when it meant your mother and your psuedo-uncle father figure slash mother's boyfriend – and what else should she call him, she definitely wasn't going to use lover, ugh – were at the same table as you and your date, it was less about understanding and more about resignment.

To say that sitting with the parents of his date was a little uncomfortable was the understatement of the century. Ambrose sat there, sipping his drink, and trying to ignore the pointed look that Wyatt Alexander was shooting him. The man might not be Risa's biological father, as that man had evidentially died little after Risa was born, but for all intents and purposes he had been an acting father for her for years. The look that Alexander was giving Ambrose was pretty damned paternal, it was damned near homicidal.

Thankfully Risa returned quickly, and Ambrose flashed her a smile. "Care to dance?"

Surveying her mother and Wyatt as she took her seat, Risa suppressed a grin and popped right back up. "I'd love to," she said to Ambrose, holding out her hand, even as she eyed the two older adults from the corner of her eyes to see if Wyatt's head had just exploded or her mother's eyes narrowed to that dangerous squint that meant instant death. Then, before anything could happen, she pulled Ambrose out onto the dance floor.

Despite the fact Mory should be enjoying herself, a chance to be out with both her daughter and husband, even if the world did not know Gideon as anything but Wyatt, the man she was likely involved with, she currently was not entirely and that focused completely on the subject of Ambrose Montague. There was no doubt he was polite and well-mannered and considerate of Risa, but he was also the son of a family thoroughly involved in Voldemort's cause, including his mad, dangerous, disturbing sister Aracela. The connection to danger was too close for Mory's comfort and even if the boy had no mark, he might as well from what she had seen of him under wards in journals.

"The room is very crowded," she mused, almost actually considering the pros and cons of such a thing in attempting to get rid of the Montague child.

Gideon opened his mouth to respond for Risa, to say that the floor was too crowded or that it was getting late and that they should all go home (which would have been odd considering that the reception was still in its early stages) but Risa responded before he could, with a swiftness that made him wish for the first time that his daughter were just a bit more slow.

Ambrose twirled Risa around the room, chuckling slightly as he saw Wyatt glaring at him and Morgandy's unreadable look. They likely didn't like him, but for now that didn't matter, he had the lovely Morrisa Yaxley in his arms dancing, and her attitude, her extraordinary way of standing out, fascinated him. "You look lovely tonight."
