Seven to Seven, that was her typical shift and yet once again, she wasn’t actually in the locker room or changing from her scrubs until well after nine o’clock. It wasn’t necessarily the worst thing that could have happened, and certainly not some travesty other than that she was tired and wanted to go home, get a glass of wine and watch something on Netflix or maybe through Amazon that involved something other than ER patients and their problems. She loved helping people but tonight, two of her patients had filled her quota for nearly a week as far as making her cry once she’d left the room. Once she was in the parking lot and sliding into her car, she seemed to relax a little which was desperately needed. No wonder they said that after a few years most nurses in the ER burned out and left for something else. God knew some of the things she’d heard that night was the stuff of nightmares and then some. It made her appreciate that, despite their horrible behavior sometimes and attitude, her family wasn’t really that bad at all. They could have been much worse. Definitely could have been much worse. That was the thought that hit her before she put her car in drive and left the parking garage intent on getting home as quickly as she could. She was careful to take the shorter way home that night, deciding, against her better judgement, not to stop at the shelter where she usually did to give her monthly donation. They wouldn’t be hurting if she gave them the check the next night, although her guilt would likely make her give extra for missing the usual drop off night. But she was tired, and as selfish as it felt, she just wanted to go home. The drive only took her about twenty minutes, but once she was in her parking space and walking up to the elevator her whole demeanor changed but that was nothing compared to when she was able to step inside her apartment. Just hearing the door shut behind her caused her back to slump slightly as she fully relaxed. That was until the very loud ‘Meow’ like screams at her feet got her attention. She laughed unable to stop herself as she felt the nudge against her legs from her best friend. Of course. She was late for dinner time, what did she expect right? “Yeah, yeah.” She said as she bent down and scooped him up in her arms and carried him into the sitting room, starting down the hallway so she could go into her room and change. “You would think I starve you the way you…” Savannah’s words halted almost immediately as she entered her room and saw a figure standing across from her. She may leave the lights on most nights and sometimes even forget to lock the door, but she knew, absolutely that she hadn’t left a man in her apartment. “Who the hell are you? How did you get in here?” She knew him, she knew that face but in her panic, she didn’t recognize him and frankly, her first thought was to drop all her things and run after the initial moment of bravery and calling him out. Should she run? Oh that sounded like a good plan so why was she frozen in place. |
