The Prince of Dragonstone sat huddled in the near darkness of the cave, the fire in front of him doing little to lessen the gloom. Around him the men of the Alliance were sleeping or preparing themselves. There would be a raid tonight, then another. The merchants straggling into the city were finding their provisions neatly halved and a deal of their most valuable goods were going into the rebels’ coffers.
Three months here and he had only seen the leader, Monterys, in passing. Jaehaerys did not need a divining glass to know that he was gaining rank in the band, and with some luck perhaps a meeting would happen soon. It would be good to have the whole of the Alliance and their contacts within the city when the time came.
It wasn’t a great surprise when a runner handed him a scroll- there was some deal of pointing and chuckling from his companions. They swore he had a highborn mistress, an idea he encouraged by looking affronted as he could when they brought it up. The surprise came when the runner cleared his throat and spoke. “There’s a woman come with it. A Septa.”
Jaehaerys’ brow rose. “A Septa? What does she look like?”
The man looked vaguely uncomfortable. “Short. White robes.”
The possibilities for assassins in waiting, that he’d been compromised…. “Anything else?”
“Uhhh….”
One of the men around the fire guffawed. “Aha, so his lady’s sent her old nurse…”
“If this is the old nurse, then the lady’s in the crib.”
“Ah, young and ugly. They’re still making Septas the way they did, then.”
“She ain’t ugly, Griffen. You come see if you like. Tell me the gods ain’t cruel to put a face like that where a man can’t get to it.”
“You said her eyes were blue?” Jaehaerys asked him. The runner nodded, looking a little moonstruck. Well that was one question answered. Jaers grinned and tapped the runner on the skull. “A man can get to most anything if he learns perseverance.” He winked and left them to their laughter.
In the main cave he found the girl in white, half surrounded by men who were obviously trying to decide whether possible damnation into seven hells was a good enough reason not to approach her. Really, the seven hells would be the least of their worries, but Jaehaerys felt magnanimous enough not to tell them so. It might just be interesting if one of the men tried a grab for her.
