The mummers were to perform tonight for Lord and Lady Piper as they had for the Rygers at Willow Wood and Lady Blackwood at Raventree Hall. There was so much to do and so little time that it was a wonder they ever got to the stage or the costumes got on or anything at all. Jenny Hill was good at it though, bobbing and weaving through all the adults with her arms full of costume or a pile of masks or whatever else she was supposed to be fetching.
She shuddered under her cloak- it was warm enough but she thought longingly of the fur-lined velvets Princess Genna had. Princess Genna was gone though, left back in Kings Landing along with all the rest of the Starks. Winter had come like that Starks always said and the snow was thick enough to crunch satisfyingly underfoot as Jenny dashed from one wagon to the next. She looked around for her sister in the barely contained chaos in the courtyard but didn't see her. Probably still getting the costume adjusted- Jorry's daughter had died in Kings Landing and they needed a replacement for the New Year's Play. Jorry was the troupe's leader and he insisted they couldn't mourn til summer- something poetic about winter being too cold and if you mourned in winter you'd freeze all your heart and never feel warm again.Jorry's wife Meera didn't seem to believe it, but she'd agreed to fit the costume to the next player to take the part.
Jenny yelped as a larger figure unexpectedly stepped into her way. She smiled as she saw the cinnamon skin on the figure's hands. "Hello, Gerran. Have you seen my sister?"
Gerran's dark eyes looked her over. "No, but I believe I heard her reciting lines over in Meera's wagon." His voice was colored with the soft drawl the Dornish always had. He'd come from Sunspear along with his sister who was a puppeteer although Jorry always got her talked into dancing in some of their bits. They reminded Genna of the Dornish who'd come to court with Prince Myrwin and Princess Elia, but the Jenny part of her was more interested in the fact they usually had some spare food or candy for Meera's Strays. That was what Jorry called them; his wife had been the one to find them in the alley in Kings Landing and Jorry had let them stay because Meera had threatened to murder him in his sleep if he didn't.
"Thank you. And Larra wants you to come make sure that the Other's sword's glued right. It keeps falling apart."
He snorted. "Sword's been glued right for weeks."
"She wants you to get under her skirts, really."
Gerran laughed. "Ah, so that's it. I couldn't tell."
"Could too. Dornishmen always know that stuff. 'Least that's what Meera says." Jenny was going to leave but she looked up at him in sudden interest. "Why don't you want under Larra's skirt?"
"Not the way I'd put that," Gerran said and made a face. "But... suppose I'm just waiting for you to grow up, little Jenny?"
She wrinkled her nose. "Don't. I'm not letting anyone under my skirts. It would look stupid." Not true. She'd hidden Lucian under her skirt one time but why grown-ups would do it was a little beyond her.
Gerran laughed and ruffled her hair. "It doesn't look all that dignified, I'll grant you, but I bet you change your mind soon enough. How old are you again, sweetling?"
"Seven. We'll be eight in a few months." They had agreed to be older. It made it better.
"You'll be eight... and when's your little sister's nameday?"
Jenny frowned. "Same day as mine."
"Still playing twins?"
"We aren't playing." Jenny ducked around him and hurried back toward Meera's wagon. The troupe didn't believe she was a twin. It was stupid of them and she wished they'd stop, even if it meant they'd think of King William's daughters...
Meera's wagon was ahead and Jenny climbed inside carefully, always mindful of the pile of masks in her hands.
