OT Post
Since I can't expect people to start posting fic within the first few days (unless any of you have any that you've posted elsewhere and you want to repost here) I'm going to make an OT post to try and start some discussion.

So - introduce yourselves. Tell me a little about who you are and what you're hoping to see here. Tell me what your favourite fandoms are or if you're an AU addict instead and are hoping to see loads of CSIM as pirates or NCIS as pre Civil War era marines. Post any links you think we'd be interested in.

I'll start you all off.

I'm Joe, your mod. I'm British and, despite my name, female. I'm currently hugely addicted to the Temeraire books, but I loved Master and Commander (the film, I haven't read the books), the Horatio Hornblower tv movies, and Pirates of the Caribbean. I love the whole feel of the period, the clothing, the adventures, and of course the way the character interactions differ from today because of rank/class and etiquette. I'm also a total AU whore and I run [info]50alternates where you can write either historical or fantasy AUs. I'm an historian (although this isn't the period I studied) and a geek so I am a huge fan of accuracy. I think research really makes a story set in this period come alive and it drives me insane when I see anachronisms.

I also have a *huge* bookmarks folder so let's find some links -

Ships of the Royal Navy in the Napoleonic period.
American Privateers in the War of 1812.
Measuring Worth a guide to the purchasing power of the British pound since the 13th century (this is really handy when you're trying to figure out roughly what coin Horatio might toss his cab driver as a tip ...)
Measuring Worth - the US dollar version from 1774 onwards.
18th Century British Naval Ranks
America and the Barbary Pirates
Pirates and Privateers - a history of maritime piracy.
Regency England
A History of Smuggling in Britain

I'm terrible at intros. I ramble about nothing and forget the things which might actually be of interest. But oh, why not?

I'm a history nut who really, really doesn't fit into this era we live in. And as far as it pertains to this asylum - I'm nuts about all things Age of Sail for much the same reasons as yourself; who could resist the clothing, the adventure, the ships, the heroes and gentlemen? In terms of fandoms, this expresses itself in a very great love of "Horatio Hornblower" (TV series, as I'm a very visual and aural kind of person). I've written far too much in that fandom to re-post it here, and much of it so long ago, it was never posted to a blog at all. My OTP is Pellew/Hornblower, with Hobbs/Wellard sailing in a close second. Which is not to say I don't dip into any number of pairings. My Hornblower writing can be found on my website. Via the home link, you'll also get to a pathetically small collection of "Master and Commander" (again, movie) fic.

I do have a lot of suitable links somewhere, but shifting all my files to a new computer has made a mess of my bookmarks for the foreseeable future.

Anyway, thanks for creating this asylum! About time these fandoms got some representation here. :)

Welcome :D

And yay for Pellow/Hornblower. I introduced my best friend and occasional co writer to Hornblower and she became an addict - and instantly became a Horatio/Archie fan which is very annoying lol.

When you find them the bookmarks would be very welcome :D Here and on my newest (*cough* and tenth *cough*) asylum [info]fiction_queries

I'm not stalking you, btw. You just seem to be running such interesting asylums. ;)

Phew. A Pellew/Hornblower fan! I've had that exact same experience with a couple of people, and it tends to leave me shaking my head in confusion at just what the big deal is with Archie. Grrr. LOL

Ooh, another useful asylum! *joins* You seem to be a compulsive asylum starter; I hope that's not contagious. *inches a bit further away*

Lol I am I am I can't help it. I never used to be this bad on LJ. I started a few challenge comms at first and then it snowballed :D When I want an asylum and it doesn't exist I tend to start it. And I'm much more prone to talking to total strangers and poking them and asking them to affiliate their asylums with mine too. I think it's just I feel more at home here!

And stalk away ;) I've had a few people end up almost following me from challenge to challenge as I set them up.

On LJ, I never even got around to my icon journal. Which I started here but haven't done anything with yet. I'm so unorganized. But I know the feeling - definitely more at home here. I don't feel like the decency police is constantly breathing down my neck.

I'm restraining myself with great difficulty from a lot of your challenges, having taken on others with deadlines already.
Hey, didn't I see you on a Mag7 asylum as well? Though I don't know if that's one of yours. :)

[info]starkindler who has more challenges than any sane person needs (including 17 in my [info]50episodes asylum) and who is my long suffering and stunning beta runs the [info]standish_saloon amongst several others. She's set half a dozen up to fill fandom niches that don't have asylums.

I'm currently trying to do JanNo (50000 words, 1 month) and failing that [info]novel_in_90 (finally an asylum that's nothing to do with me) with a Magnificent Seven bunny.

*boggles* I'm impressed by that kind of energy but not entirely sure 'sane' is the right word! *boggles some more*

I wrote a novel in a little over a month once. It was fun, but boy, did it wear me out. You're not a Chris/Vin shipper, are you? Because what with you not going for Horatio/Archie, there's a good chance that's not your cup of tea either. Just a theory... :)

Actually in Mag7 I'll read almost any slashy pairing. I'm particularly fond of Chris in any way I can get him but Chris/Vin isn't one of my favourites. This is my first real Mag7 fic (it's possible I have a ficlet or two somewhere but nothing serious). My fic is going to start Chris/Buck and gradually involve all 7 in one relationship :D but Chris/Ezra, Chris/Buck, and Chris/JD (of which there is precious little out there damnit) are my favourites depending on my mood.

Threesomes and moresomes are one of my particular fic favourites :D

Oh my god. Soul sister! I adore Chris, and never more so than with JD! Unless we're talking Chris/Raphael. Or Chris/Raphael/JD. :)
I've written a multi-part epic about those three. Not to mention one-offs of Chris/JD. (I've probably written a good percentage of what precious little there is out there.) And Chris/Ezra. Don't think I have any Chris/Buck, but that's because my Buck is usually also busy with JD. Or Ezra.

I'm quite fond of the occasional fic threesome myself.

Are they on your website too? Or do you post to Blackraptor (if you do I've read your fic, I must have because I've read every one of the half a dozen or so Chris/JD fics on there)?

No never mind I went to your website and looked! I've read the Chris/Raphael/Ezra recently (only I came from Blackraptor to it and they don't do warnings so the deathfic was a bit of a surprise. Not happy. Don't like that kind of surprise. Hate the blackraptor archiving style sometimes. It lacks summaries and warnings.). I loved it even if it was horribly sad. And Wet Day in Denver and Black Limousine are favourites of mine too :D I just recced Black Limousine to [info]starkindler.

Blackraptor link to them, yes. And oh dear, so sorry about the deathfic! :{
I hope I have some kind of warning on my site... *checks* Yup, there's plenty of hintage on that part. (I had no idea that was going to happen until well into the story arc, which was never meant to be a story arc to begin with!) I'm really glad you liked it anyway, despite the nasty surprise. Meep.

Good to know you like those two others as well. And thanks for the rec! ;)
I really need to look closely at my older writing; I bet it's all full of dreadful mistakes of the non-native writer variety. That kind of thing is dangerous once you get started; I've spent the last couple of weeks editing old, old LOTR fic.

Yeah you have warnings on your site. I noticed them there but Blackraptor sends you directly into fic and you don't get warnings. It's irritating but it's still the most comprehensive place to find fic.

So we share several fandoms, good taste in pairings, liking for threesomes, and incest considering your LotR claim :D I just friended your journal.

You're a non-native writer? I couldn't tell from the fic.

That sucks. Bad Blackraptor. :(

Oh yes, we definitely need to be on each other's flist. Incest too? And here I was wondering if my LotR claim would have you putting up the red flag! LOL

That's good to know. :) I don't think you can really tell with things I write now, but a lot of what's on my site is very nearly ancient. It could all use an overhaul, and that's a frightening thought!

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]featheredwolf

I don't tend to write incest simply because the fandoms I write in don't have pairings that are incestuous. But I read Supernatural and Numb3rs and Harry Potter (although I much prefer Bill/Charlie to Twincest). I do have a Numb3rs fic lying around and I'm working on a multifandom xover which will have Don/Charlie. :D

As long as it's consensual there's almost nothing I won't read. The list of kinks I've written about is probably pretty impressive lol so incest isn't a problem for me.

I beta for a few not native speakers and my aforementioned co writer is Italian. Generally I find with them there's an occasional turn of phrase that doesn't *quite* sound English but you can't say what's wrong with it :D I'm always impressed with anyone who can write in a foreign language. I speak a few and I have a degree in one but I wouldn't want to try to write fic in it.

I write incest where the characters very strongly suggest the idea to me. But then there are fandoms where incest is heavily suggested, but the characters themselves leave me uninspired, so no writing takes place. In terms of HP, the incest is all with the Malfoys for me. :)

Yup, that's me too. (I seem to be saying something of that nature a lot today.) If it's consensual, I'm perfectly fine with it, whatever it is.

I've lived in an English-speaking country for nearly half my life now, so even people I meet for the first time haven't got a clue. If anyone does pick out a slight accent, they can never tell what it is. It's lucky for me that where I grew up, a lot of emphasis was put on grammar with every language taught. I'm told my spelling is far better than that of any native New Zealander. :)

Oooh we're in trouble now, my co-writer is about to come and defend Archie's honour :D Don't mind her she normally has better taste than that, Horatio/Archie is an aberration ;)

I've found that (once they get to a certain standard of fluency obviously) foreigners tend to spell better and have better grammar than a lot of native speakers. I don't think I really learned any grammar until I started learning German to be honest, then I had to know English grammar to understand German grammar. In fact when I was doing A-levels (school leaving exams) I remember my German teacher having to explain what adjectives and adverbs *were* to some of my classmates.

*sticks tongue at Joe* As I was telling Joe I think one of the main reasons I like Archie is because after she *looks pointedly* addicted me to the series, the fist fic I found was really long, really really well done and even crossover with another fandom which even though very unlikely it worked wonderfully. I still like Archie and all his angst (yes I'm a total angst whore).

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]sweetsorcery

I understand about the angst bit. The vast majority of my favourite pairings, no matter the fandom, are doomed. Usually, at least one of them dies. *sigh*
Horatio/Archie just isn't my kind of dynamic. Equals do nothing for me, as a rule. There has to be someone older, of superior rank and/or experience. :)

She does angst, I do the happy endings. In other words she breaks things and then comes running to me whining 'fix it!' :D I like my angst but it has to end well.

Equals do nothing for me, as a rule. There has to be someone older, of superior rank and/or experience. :)

You know that may well be one of the reasons I like H/P.

And it's totally not Age of Sail (but then neither is Mag7 which we were discussing lol) - have you seen Empire Records? I think you'd really like it and it's very slashable and has the older, more experienced/younger man dynamic too :D Anthony LaPaglia and Rory Cochrane, not to mention Renee Zellwegger and Liv Tyler too. There are two versions out on dvd, you want the Fan Edition, it's slashier! It's where my username (and the bratty cowriter lol) come from. It's my main fandom, and it's tragically tiny (there's about three of us writing regularly so we need more fans). I honestly don't know anyone who's watched it who didn't love it. And yeah end of raving about favourite movie I swear, but God my fandom needs new people :D

[info]lucasquinn

Hey I don't always run to you to fix it.. kinda :)
True on the other hand that my writing tends to be soaked and dripping in angst. Thinking about the whole equals vs older/younger dynamic, I didn't use to mind either way, but due to several reasons I am leaning much more towards fandoms where both sides of the slash equations are equals :)
Now, Empire Records... *wide grin* Joe already did a lot of the work but if you need any more reasons to want to watch it is the great sountrack. :)
We have HH covered here then, what do you think of Temeraire? Technically it's an AU Age of Sail but I think the feeling of the era is fantastically recreated, plus.. dragons! :)

[info]sweetsorcery

That seems to be the biggest split in fandom. There's the "equals" camp and the "older/younger" camp, and virtually never the twain shall meet. :)
I know you're trying, ladies, and I'm always willing to be tempted into fandoms, but I'm afraid the soundtrack (I just went and had a sample listen) does no more for me than anything else about it. I'm really sorry I can't up the numbers of your fandom. :{
Had to look up Temeraire. *sigh* Again, don't think so. LotR and HP (and movies only) aside, fantasy isn't really my genre, and I'm not crazy about it crossing over into other genres I do like.
I feel like such a spoil-sport. :)

[info]sweetsorcery
2008-01-08 01:04 am UTC (link)
My idea of a happy ending is not necessarily most people's. :)

I've found that dynamic does it for me regardless of fandom. It just makes for such wonderful chemistry, not to mention seduction, protection, dominance... *shiver*

Oh, this thread is going waaay out of hand. :)
I'm afraid I'll have to pass on Empire Records. So not my kind of movie, and even if it were - Renee Zellwegger and Liv Tyler would be enough to put me off. Sorry. :{ I know all too well how tough it is to drum up a fandom for one-off movies like that. I actually set up a community once for the original version of "Dawn of the Dead". Twelve watchers and two of us writing. It was quite sad. And that is still one of the slashiest movies I've ever seen. *sigh*

LOL! I responded to her very nicely, without harming a hair on Archie's head.

German grammar is a bitch. If you don't get that right from the start, you're doomed. Apparently, New Zealand isn't the only country which puts no effort whatsoever into teaching people proper grammar; my husband will be pleased to know this. :)

Lol OK if you insist on being 'myeterious'. :D

Pity about Empire. The annoying thing is in bigger comms when people talk about films I see loads of people saying they love it. It seems to have a load of fans and no fandom. Liv Tyler's annoying but then her character's meant to be a bit annoying so I ignore it :D Renee Zellwegger (Bridget Jones movies aside) is ten times the actress she is lol.

And now I'm off to post the first 9000 words or so of my Mag7 JanNo.

Yup, it's like that with 'Dawn of the Dead'. Cult movie. Hugely loved by horror fans everywhere. But apparently, none of them are fanfic writers. :\

I still owe people Christmas ficlets lol. Last year's Secret Santa for a list I'm on I had to post a 2000 word extract. I finally finished it this October lol. And the one I posted for this year's Secret Santa I actually started in July ... 2005.

I'm very good at starting things.

[info]sweetsorcery
2008-01-08 01:47 am UTC (link)
Oh yes, I'm a lot better at starting than finishing myself. I'm actually my own biggest obstacle, because I tend to leap between fandoms at the worst possible times. Such as when deadlines loom.

If you look again, you'll notice it says 'except LotR and HP'. I'm in those for the characters and grudgingly put up with the fantasy elements, and I steer well clear of the books. :)
My stories in those fandoms are frequently AU and rarely go into anything 'fantasy' to a great extent. And no dragons in sight!

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]featheredwolf
2008-01-08 01:50 am UTC (link)
Lol well OK I guess. Other than the fact they're riding huge dragons (lol because that's such a tiny detail, right?) Temeraire is pretty low fantasy. It's very similar in feel to a Hornblower type story, but if you're not into that that's fine anyway.

I love fantasy myself but I do tend to prefer a little less magic (I love Harry Potter but the magic does have limits thank goodness). It makes it harder to plot things if any problem can be solved with someone waving a magic wand.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]sweetsorcery
2008-01-08 02:00 am UTC (link)
I don't believe I've ever written a scene actually involving dragons - huge or otherwise. :) If I should ever need to because it doesn't make sense otherwise, I'll bite that bullet. For example, a story I wrote had to touch on the thestrals, so I simply don't dwell.

The magic element isn't so bad. It can come in quite handy, really. It's the creatures that tend to make me cringe. (Dobby! Argh!!)

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]featheredwolf
2008-01-08 02:04 am UTC (link)
The trouble with magic, from a writing perspective, is it's hard to make sure your characters can't get out of whatever 'peril' they're in by just waving a wand. There's always some simple magical way of getting round something you miss lol. I prefer the creatures to the magic.

I tend to like urban or low fantasy where you have fantasy races and such but not so much wand waving :D I'm like Snape - all that foolish wand waving bugs me ;)
