Latveria denies EU proposal, tightens border entry
By BOB FISCK
Posted: 05/15/2016 12:13 EDT Amidst growing pressure from its neighbors to join the European Union, Latveria remains firm in its resolve to maintain its autonomy DOOMSTADT, LATVERIA — Ten years ago, Latveria held a very different standing in the eyes of the Western world. It was a small country with its roots deeply entrenched in its own Gothic history—one of the last European nations to rid itself of a true, all-powerful monarchy. When the people of Latveria declared their independence from the monarchy, complete with a quick but bloody coup, it was not their European neighbors but rather the nations of North and South America who were the first to throw their support behind the new Latveria and its place on the stage of global politics.
Years later, the country has a well-functioning government, helmed by Prime Minister whose accomplishments are well known to his European neighbors. Even as a teenager, Victor von Doom aided the Latverian revolution. He helped craft its place in the world, serving on the diplomatic mission to the United States before taking his place in the highest office in the land. Some see his rise as improbably meteoric. Still others see it as his natural place. Few others in Latverian politics can claim to have the vision the young PM has shown. He established Latveria's first University, inviting some of the greatest minds of the world to create ground-breaking curriculum. He lay the groundwork for a boom of science and industry in the once sleepy country, turning it from Gothic hamlet to a formidable force int he global markets in just a few short years. Victor von Doom's Latveria is a country that seems now finally worthy of attention from its neighbors in the European Union. For months now, the EU had been building a proposal that would fast-track Latveria into its ranks. The intention was to allow freer and more equitable trade between the small nation and surrounding nations, bringing a much needed economic boost to the EU and a new wave of consumer to Latverian businesses. Von Doom had seemed happy to court the attention, sending representatives regularly to meet with the EU, to discuss and iron out an amicable proposal. Today, however, we have learned that talks have broken down entirely, and in a dramatic fashion. Latveria has declared its intention to remain a sole autonomous nation outside of the European Union and moreover, it announced a tightening of its borders to members of the European Union who will have strong travel sanctions places upon them when trying to enter the small country. It is a move that has inspired some outrage across the continent, leaving many to wonder just what plans Prime Minister von Doom has for the land-locked country that seems so dependent on its neighbors for support. |
