Remus had cast every silencing charm he knew on his person. He had practiced them on muggles in the street on his way here, getting a feel for when his presence was detected, how far he could stand from people without being heard even while talking. The portkey burned a hole in his pocket, wanting to be let out.
Remus, standing in front of the Ministry in James' invisibility cloak, knew it was now or never.
He entered through the main door following a dumpy looking woman. Once inside, the woman removed her hat and uniform from a bag, and Remus realized she was a Wizengmot judge. He followed close behind her out of Muggle London and into the ministry. Once, she stopped and sniffed the air, and Remus held his breath. In another moment, the woman's identification was approved, and they were in.
From here, Remus had some idea where to go. He remembered now a message that Andromeda had forwarded, from Vera LeStrange. Sirius was likely to be in a holding cell between the offices of Bellatrix LeStrange and the Ministry's bounty hunters. Vera had said that these offices had the tightest security. Remus felt reasonably silent, but he wasn't exactly sure how to get through doors. As for other security measures-- Remus merely had to have faith in James' cloak. It had always served them well, and Dumbledore himself seemed to have had great faith in it. That was enough for Remus.
Without another moment's hesitation, Remus followed close behind the judge as she got into the elevator, going down. He couldn't tailgate this woman forever. He could only hope someone led him to Sirius.
The elevator stopped and the woman got out. This would be the floor where they held trials, or maybe where the woman had an office, not the right floor. Remus didn't know which button to press, but it didn't matter, he would not press a button anyway. One might never know when one is being watched, and it would betray him. He would ride the elevator up and down until it came eventually to the right floor. He would wait as long as necessary. After all, he would do no good to Sirius if he were captured.
