thread: morph and copycat
who: kevin and nessie
where: kevin's room
when: we'll say today, though it really should be earlier. nov. 4th
what: serious conversation

Morph was freaking out. He didn't get concerned too often. He was generally a not serious person. But when his friends were threatened, he could show a whole different side.

That what had happened with those FoH members. He shouldn't have done it. He knew that, but what they did to Tabby was inexcusable, what the entire government was doing to mutants (and, actually, humans at this point) was inexcusable. He wasn't sure if that made it okay in some way. It was easy to justify things to oneself. Talking to your girlfriend about it was something else entirely.

So he sat at his desk, curled up and looking fairly nonthreatening. He was just waiting for the ax to fall, for him to get into trouble. Really anything was possible. But he still didn't see another way, not with the terrible way the Brotherhood was organized, and he'd always think Pyro was pretty stupid for his use of resources at hand. Even if there was no other reason for him to stay at Xavier's, that alone would have been enough reason not to join the Brotherhood. Stupidity.

They hadn't really been talking, and that was weird for two people as chatty as them. It didn't help that, you know, Morph had told her over the network that he'd murdered someone. Or killed them. But, considering the situation, Vanessa was going to go with murdered.

Normally, she'd give a warning knock and then burst into Kevin's room, ready or not. This time, though, she knocked hesitantly, and stood outside his door, rocking back and forth on her heels. She wasn't sure what to say to him, that was the problem, which was odd, because Vanessa was rarely at a loss for words.

But here she was, unable to articulate anything to Morph.

Very odd indeed.

It wasn't murder. It was defense. Really. Morph and justification were becoming good friends, again. And now he was going to have to face this problem, and there were so many repercussions he had no idea how to even name them. He just didn't want to go to jail. Really, really did not want.

But he did want to talk to somebody, explain to somebody, even if Vanessa didn't agree with him. She could hate him at the end of this conversation, but he'd feel better. The silence was killing him. He went to open the door when she knocked, and he forced himself to say "Come on in..."

He would shut the door as soon as she was inside, but he wasn't sure what to say then. Maybe she'd just start freaking out.

Vanessa slipped into the room --- she actually could be quiet when she wanted to be --- and shut the door behind her for him. At least they were on the same wavelength about that. She hardly wanted anyone overhearing their conversation.

And, honestly, she didn't want to get Morph in trouble. Maybe some people would have ratted him out, but she wasn't one of them. Sure, maybe she wasn't sure how she felt about the whole thing, but she was open-minded enough to realize that she didn't know all the details and immoral (cough) enough to realize that she cared more about Morph than some stranger.

"Um. I thought we should talk. About... you know. What happened."

At least she wasn't freaking out. Yet.

Not freaking out was good. Morph might be able to remain somewhat calm if she did. But killing a person wasn't just an accident or a mistake. It was realizing you were a different person than you thought you were.

"Where should I start?" Morph half-asked Nessie, and half himself. With a small sigh, he returned to his seat at the desk. She was, of course, welcome to sit or stand anywhere. "Friends of Humanity had this whole...compound. It was insane. I didn't---" He should have found another way. He should have not worked with the Brotherhood, but he was so pissed off, so deadly serious, he just wanted to do what it took to get the job done. He'd do that for any of his friends.

Vanessa started off by pacing. She wasn't sure what else to with all of her nervous energy. But she stopped when Morph started talking. She was trying to be understanding here; really, she was.

"You didn't...?" He didn't what? He didn't mean to do it? He didn't regret it? He didn't what?

Morph couldn't really defend himself. At least, not entirely. His head fell against the desk and he shrugged. Continuing looking down, he explained. "I shouldn't have done it. I shouldn't have worked with the Brotherhood and their God awful plan. But I couldn't leave Tabby in that situation." He sat up again, only to bury his face in his hands. "I'm a bad person, aren't I? The ends justify the means, doing anything to protect my friends. I think I would seriously do anything for you. That's wrong, isn't it?" But he just felt that the X-Men weren't doing enough. Some people were worth helping, damn the rest.

Vanessa was chewing her lip, trying to wrap her mind around all of this. She couldn't entirely disagree with him. And she hadn't been there. And, everything else aside, she was pretty sure she had to agree with his comment about him doing anything for her since she was also pretty sure she'd do the same for him.

"No... no, you couldn't leave her in that situation." They didn't talk about it a lot, but she agreed that the X-Men weren't doing enough. And then you had the Brotherhood which did too much that was unproductive and unnecessary and, quite frankly, stupid. So she wasn't sure where that left her. And Morph.

"You're not a bad person... I mean... I don't know what happened. If you could have done something else. But... I don't blame you for going." Vanessa paused, scuffing the carpet with the toe of her shoe. "I just wish you would have taken me with you."

If nothing else, it was slightly comforting that she agreed with him about the X-Men and the Brotherhood. Neither of them really had his faith right then.

"Maybe I could have done something else. At the time? I didn't see it. But there might have been something else." His hands dropped to the desk, fingers tapping against the top absently. His eyebrows raised at her final comment, and he actually turned to face her then. "No...you didn't need to get involved in this."

Vanessa crossed her arms over her chest and frowned. "I could have helped." She paused, then said more softly, "I would have wanted to help." Of course she would have. It would have been terrifying and she didn't even know this Tabby girl. But if it was this important to Morph, she would have willingly done it.

Morph allowed himself just the barest of smiles. He liked that she would have helped him. He liked thinking he could trust her like that. "Well, you certainly would have been more useful than the Brotherhood." He liked this trend of thinking bad things about the Brotherhood. No, they weren't all to blame. They didn't force him to pull the trigger, and that was something he was going to have to learn to live with. But they were not born strategist. "Next time there's a hostage situation, I'll let you know." He shouldn't make jokes about this, but, what else was he going to say? He admitted to killing someone, something he couldn't really justify, but she was still talking to him. That was good, right?

Vanessa dropped her arms from across her chest, rest them on her hips and affecting a stern tone of voice. "You'd better." Then again, she wasn't really teasing with the stern voice; she meant it. He'd better.

Her expression softened a little and she began to fidget a bit, looking uncertain before saying, "Are you okay? I mean, like, I know you're okay physically but..." It was sort of a big deal to kill someone.

"Promise." Morph kept his smile, but it was visibly strained. He felt a bad talking about this, because what right did he have to ask for understanding? He made a choice, and he had to live with those consequences. But he knew he couldn't make this choice again, whatever happened. That didn't change what he did, though. "No, but...I'm going to have to live with that."

She pressed her lips together, looking troubled. Rocking on her heels like she wanted to go over to him, she asked, "Can I do anything to help?" Vanessa doubted it; this was one of those things where she couldn't get rid of his demons for him, but she honestly wished she could.

He shrugged his shoulders slightly. He lifted up one hand, "I really do feel bad for...for killing," then he lifted up the other, "but he worked at a compound that captured and tortured mutants." There was only so much sympathy Morph could have for him. But Vanessa seemed to understand, and that meant the world. "You're here, aren't you?"

She understood as much as she could, anyway. She'd never killed anyone, but she'd done a lot of stuff as a runaway that she wasn't especially proud of. Stuff that she definitely hadn't told Morph.

Her lips quirked up into a half smile. "Is that enough?" Then frowning, she added, "If that's what they were doing there, maybe they deserved to die..."

Maybe that was a horrible thing to say, but maybe it was true.

Maybe it was true, and that was the only thing that Morph could really use to justify. So he shrugged. "What I do know, is that it won't happen again." Him killing, that is. Maybe it was too little too late, but it was something.

Morph preferred talking about how Vanessa helped him. "It is. More than enough, in fact." He got to his feet and went to give her a kiss, provided she didn't try to avoid him or something.

Vanessa didn't comment on the it never happening again part. The fact of the matter, if she wanted to think about the situation shrewdly and logically was that who knew what they would have to do to defend themselves with the way things were going? It was hard to say what they would and wouldn't do at this point.

She smiled a bit when he came over to her to kiss her though; thank God. She hadn't been sure if it would be okay to go over to him and this solved that. Giving him a quick kiss in return, Vanessa said, "Maybe you shouldn't let anyone else know about this." Some of them might not care, but she didn't know about all of them.

She was, of course, right. Anything could happen at this point. But he was making promises to deal with the guilt. Who knows how that'll work for him.

He nodded at her suggestion. "That's fair. Thank you so much, though, for listening, Nessie." After all, her opinion was the only one that really mattered.

Vanessa gave him a half quirked smile. "Of course I'd listen... I mean... I wouldn't just assume that you were a bad person without talking to you or something dumb..."

Impulsively, she threw her arms around him and gave him a hug. "I'm just glad you're okay. You know. I mean, alive and stuff. You could have gotten hurt." Or worse.
