Thread: BRAVE NEW WORLD BATTLE
Who: The X-Men, the Brotherhood, and NPCs for all sides
When: Early morning Saturday, March 15 and moving into March 16, 2008 -- this battle will last at least two actual days, maybe longer, which will account for any "frozen" time if the thread stalls the rest of the game----this is a battle of such importance that it would make no sense if it only lasted one day.
Where: Washington, D.C.
What: The battle for governmental power in America begins! For the detailed battle plan, please see the OOC post about it. Characters not on the list who choose to show up can show up... whatever :) but the plan is there to keep people's heads from exploding.

____________________

No one could have expected it would be like this.

There were news reports coming in that there were mutants attacking the Brotherhood in other parts of the country. Not everywhere, but key strongholds that no one knew about. They'd been expecting the march on Washington with reinforcements, but they'd never expected all of this. In Washington they were outnumbering the X-Men, sure, but elsewhere? Other bases would fall, no doubt. They just had to hold Washington. Whatever they did, they had to hold Washington.

The siege started just before dawn, with explosions in an empty park-----enough to serve as a distraction while the X-Men and their allies moved in to surround the area as best they could... but after that? After that, it looked like organization died. How could it survive? No one could predict how battles would go, and it seemed like the organized front had now dissolved into individual duels. The Brotherhood killed when they won, but the X-Men seemed to be dragging fallen foes into a forcefield held up by Sue Storm, containing them until... when? Until the battle was over?

No one knew when that would be.

Vertigo was standing shakily, the blow to her hip hitting hard enough to make it hard to stand. "Does it?" ---And then she was tugging a knife from her belt and hurling it at him.

Remy threw himself sideways as the knife left the sheath and was well away by the time it flew by him. Rolling upward into a crouch, Remy pushed himself to his feet. The disorientation was still there (and possibly a slight concussion from all the headwounds) but he was well enough.

"Oui, jus' a little." He was quick with the staff, feinting a blow to her face before truly lashing out to her right side with vicious force. He'd ceased to pull his punches by now. "This gettin' old yet, chere? Or y'still wanna play this game?"

The staff hit hard even though Vertigo attempted to dodge----she hadn't expected the feint and it disoriented her enough to take the blow full to her side. With her hip injured from the blast of the playing card, she lost her balance and fell, crashing down onto the ground with a cry. And there she was, looking up at a man while she bled, and she couldn't use her powers. For whatever fucking reason, she couldn't use her powers. She was a good fighter. She was a trained fighter, but up against another trained fighter with a heavy stick, she didn't look nearly as impressive as she was against... some joe schmoe that had no training. "Fuck you!" she snapped, twisting her body despite the pain and kicking her foot out against Remy's stomach.

With a loud wheeze as the air escaped him, Remy stumbled backwards. In addition to the disorientation from the pistol whipping, he was slower than he was accustomed to being, both of which contributed to his lack evasive maneuvering. And his chest burned, the fractured ribs shifting with the blow. Bone ground against bone in that moment and the explosion of pain was immediate and intense, leaving him gasping.

He went back to his knees, gathering himself up for her next little assault. "That. . . just was. . . mean."

Vertigo staggered forward----Remy had clearly hurt something there, judging from the way she was moving. She collapsed to her knees in front of him and swayed dizzily. It looked like she was going to either kiss him or faint, but she didn't do either. Instead, she pulled another small dagger from her belt and shoved it into him----right at the seam in his armored chest plate, moving past the armor and into flesh.

"No. This is," she hissed, her robotic hand reaching up and tugging Remy's hair, keeping his face tilted upward so she could get a good look at the pain on his face.

He jerked backwards reflexively as she collapsed in front of him. But as weary and pained as he was, he couldn't managed more than to scoot backwards before she stabbed him.

His face contorted in pain alright. The knife slid in all to easily and stuck into the flesh there, up to the hilt.

His years of training beneath Jean-Luc were not all for nothing. Past the pain. Past the sheer agony. There was fury. And that alone pushed him to grab her wrist, digging his fingers into the pressure point between her radius and ulna to make her drop the blade and then twisting it backwards. He wanted to hurt her. Bend her arm backwards until it snapped.

Vertigo screamed, her left arm twisting back as her hand came loose from the knife----with Remy's anger behind the gesture, her bones snapped like twigs, her arm twisting at a grotesque, inhuman angle.

"Let me go, let me go!"

The knife stayed buried in Remy's body even after she let go, and she had another hand that could have gone for it, but instead, the robotic hand whirred and clicked and came down on Remy's face like she was trying to claw his eyes out.

He dropped her arm soon enough, grabbing for the robotic hand that was trying to claw his face off. He succeeded in keeping an eye, through those fingers of hers raked across the side of his face before he could stop her, leaving bloody furrows in their wake.

He went down backwards with her weight atop him, but kicked out with his leg, hoping to plant one boot in her stomach and knocking her off.

Vertigo was tugged forward and the momentum had her going----and then Remy's kick meant that she was flipping over him and falling, slamming her back into the ground. "God!" It was a scream and a sob, and she clutched her arm against her body, realizing this was no good. No more.

"Truce! Truce----motherfracking----please... please stop... truce..."

"Truce?" With a groan, Remy collapsed backwards. One of his eyes was closed against the blood running down his face. The good eye he rolled back to see where she'd landed. At this point, he didn't care if she were only faking. He wasn't moving.

"Saints preserve us from fou femmes. I'm t'one bleeding t'death and she calls a truce."

Speaking of which, he touched a hand to the blade embedded in his abdomen and hissed in pain. He was bleeding out, alright. If he were lucky, she hadn't severed anything vital - but that wasn't going to account for the blood loss.

"Whatever," Vertigo panted, staring up at the sky and licking blood off her lip with a grimace. "Whatever, shut up, you're fine."

Reaching into a pocket in her toolbelt, she pulled out a handkerchief and a packet of gauze. She had all kinds of things in there. She reached back and dropped it on his chest. They were so close that the tops of their heads were touching. "Quit whining." Maybe he was dying. Huh. Crap. That would kind of suck. But only kind of.

"How 'bout I stick a knife in you, an' then we see who's whinin'?" Remy grumbled painfully, smacking the gauze away. Lot of good it would do at the moment. He was beginning to feel light-headed. "Got one right here. Hold still."

One day, he was really going to kill her.

"Shut up," Vertigo said again, reaching up and smacking the side of his head with her robotic hand. Good god, she hurt. She hurt so much she couldn't quite register how much pain she was in. That sucked. "Go. Go find a medic or something, you do that. I'm not .. nngh. I'm not gonna keep you."

He laughed, almost. That hurt, so he settled for an almost chuckle. Apparently enough blood loss led to a loss of anger, as well. "That's 'cause you ain't getting up either, Val. An' quit hittin' me. Merde, women."

Vertigo's smack turned into a fond caress, robotic fingers twisting in Remy's hair. She couldn't really feel anything with her hand, the fingertips sending little pulses through her nerves to make her aware that she was touching something, but it certainly didn't feel like using her real fingertips. Still, her other arm was broken, and this was as close to gentle as she could get.

"Merde is right, hotshot."

He tensed a little bit as she touched him, half expecting another violent outburst. Remy was beginning to believe he was doomed to be surrounded by unpredictable, violent women. Most of the time it made life interesting.

Sometimes you ended up with broken bones. Ah, well. Such was life.

"How 'bout you got an' get a medic an' I'll wait here."

Vertigo groaned, but she knew that Remy was worse off than she was... and he'd probably die if she didn't go find someone to help him. How the hell was she supposed to find someone in this mess? Damn. She gave Remy's cheek a gentle caress. "You sit tight, sweetie," she murmured, suddenly rather kind now that she had the fight taken out of her. She sat up, her left arm limp at her side, and she bit back a shriek as she stood. "Motherfuck..." Looking back down at Remy, she frowned.

"You really hurt me." Like she was surprised. "And you look like shit." ---Like she was pleased with herself for kicking his ass. "I'll find someone." And then she was staggering off through the chaos, trying to find a medic----or, that was the idea, anyway.

She never came back.
