Thread: Remedy and Shadowcat
Who: Elvyran Adelaide and Kitty Pryde
When: February 25, evening
Where: Xavier School grounds
What: Cigarettes and conversation.

The stars always seemed so bright out here, away from the lights of Salem Center. Kitty had missed watching them when she'd been away, seeing the familiar constellations wheeling over the school grounds. She'd gone out tonight to get some time to herself - the mood in the halls these days was nearly always tense, and sometimes it was just too much for her to handle. And being outside meant it was less likely that anyone would come and ask her to take care of anything.

Kitty exhaled, watching the silvery cloud of her breath float away and dissipate into the cold evening air. It was a little warmer than it had been the past few nights, but still quite chilly, with snow lying on the ground. She didn't mind the cold, though. It helped her focus her thoughts.

Elvyran didn't make it a habit to smoke inside, but whenever his hands got a little too twitchy, he had to go outside for a cigarette. He didn't much mind the cold -- never had -- so it wasn't a big deal to just go out. And it was a pleasant surprise to see Kitty out there, too. They didn't chat much, but they were still pretty decent friends.

"Hey." Elvyran came up beside her while he tapped a cigarette out of the pack. "Can't sleep?"

Kitty glanced over - and up - and smiled. "Hey, Ran." For some reason, the whole resurrection-clone-whatever thing didn't bother her that much. She was just glad to see him walking around again. "Yeah, I guess." It was hard to get a decent night's sleep these days.

Nodding at the pack of cigarettes Ran held, she asked, "Mind if I bum one of those?" She'd picked up smoking when she'd been on the road, and though she rarely bought cigarettes now that she was back, it was still really tempting when they were right there in front of her.

	"Sure." He offered over the pack once he'd pulled out his own, reaching into his pocket for a lighter. "The more the merrier." It was said with a bit of doctor's irony; while Elvyran was in no risk of getting cancer from the damn things, everybody else was fair game as far as nicotine went. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

	"Thanks." Kitty took the cigarette and let him light it for her, cupping her hands around the flame to shield it. She took a long drag, then looked back up at Ran as she let out the breath. "So what are you doing out here? Insomnia?" If it was something else, she was more than willing to listen to him talk about it, but she didn't want to pry. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

He lit Kitty's first, taking a relieving drag when his was lit and exhaling gratefully. "Bit of a twitch," he answered, looking a great deal calmer now that he had a cigarette in his hand. Kitty was a phaser, she would get it, wouldn't she? Of course she would. "It was come out here or impulsively stick my hand in the first person I saw. ---Have you ever had that problem?"

"Stick your hand in them where?" she asked, grinning. "I can't say that I have, though. But I tend to phase a lot anyway, so maybe it just doesn't build up like that." Reaching through a drawer to grab the pen she wanted was faster than opening it. But she was curious, given that she didn't know much about Ran's phasing. She'd always thought of him more as a healer than a phaser.

"Ha ha." Elvyran returned the grin, taking another drag before he added, "It's like a ... compulsion, I think, that I seemed to have picked up recently. I only phase through a person's body, so you can see where I'd have less of a chance to use my powers than you do. Too long and I tend to get a bit of a tic." He waved the hand that held the cigarette, indicating why he'd become quite the chainsmoker recently.

"Feel lucky. Nothing's more awkward than having a face to face conversation where your only thought is making rather inappropriate physical contact -- and not of the normal kind."

	"Wow. That's... really interesting, actually." Kitty took another drag before looking back up at him. "But, you know... if you ever get too twitchy, feel free to come by and give me a poke. 	Elvyran paused, and after a silence (and another drag), he exhaled, watching the smoke rise before he answered, "I don't think Sarena would appreciate that." That was a joke, but that didn't mean he and Ren didn't obviously have problems. ...Already. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

	Kitty smiled tentatively, relieved. It was a little jarring to hear Ran joking, given that he was usually pretty serious. "Okay. So, like... how's it work for you? Is it automatic, or what?" For her, it was easy as breathing, but not every power worked like that. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

	"It's not ... automatic, per se." Elvyran made a bit of a face, trying to word it right and taking another drag on his cigarette to buy himself a bit more time. "Natural might be a better word for it. It's innate, but I rarely do it without thinking about it, unless I'm really tired." (Reply to this) (Parent)
