Thread: Spider-Man and Shadowcat
Who; Peter and Kitty
When; Sometime this afternoon, before Peter gets Hank's email
Where; The computer lab
What; Peter needs someone to talk to, because he doesn't want to freak MJ out. So he freaks Kitty out instead. Huzzah.

"---and then Elvyran has this look on his face like he's totally fascinated, but not in the cool, you know, 'wow, this is awesome' kind of way. I mean in a weird, I was afraid something creepy was about to happen kind of way. So he goes and sticks his hand into my arm and starts touching things, which was totally bizarre, and now I apparently have an extra bone and some kind of ... I don't know, liquid filled sac right next to where my body makes my webbing in both arms. Then, of course, they want to know what's in it, so Elvyran puts this huge needle in my arm and ... ow. Let me tell you, I've had my intestines ripped out before, and that didn't hurt as bad as this needle going right into my wrist."

Dramatic? Sure it was. But Peter hadn't actually told anybody -- not even Mary Jane -- what had happened when he'd gone down to the medlab. That, and he was freaking out, understandably. He wasn't even sitting or crouching on something, preferring to stand and pace and gesture with his hands while he spoke. His arms weren't as sore as they usually were, and while that was nice, he kind of wondered what that meant. But thank God for Kitty, really, and her ability to listen to him for that long. He'd have happily talked to himself all night, but it was nice when there was another person in the room.

"Anyway." Peter took a deep breath, running a hand through his hair. "How are you? New York obviously didn't kill you -- thank you for not dying, by the way; I'd have to find some way to blame myself for it, and I just don't have that kind of time right now."

For a moment, all Kitty could do was stare. Strange anatomical matters were common enough at the Institute, and she shouldn't have been surprised. But growing extra bones at random was a little unnerving - and liquid-filled sacs were something else entirely. Add the sight of Peter so unnerved that he was pacing and she was somewhat at a loss.

She couldn't help but laugh a little, though, when he thanked her for managing to stay alive. "New York didn't kill me, no," she said. "Neither did Boston, or Montpelier, or anywhere else. Not like they didn't try, though."

Pausing for a moment's thought, his question made her quiet. "I'm... I don't really know. It's weird being back. Being safe. Sleeping in my own bed and having running water and heat and lights and all of my clothes. It's harder to adjust to being back than it was to being off on my own."

Peter's view of the world only seemed to encompass the southeastern part of New York state at best, so ... honestly, words like 'Boston' and 'Montpelier' went right over his head, now that Kitty was home and safe.

Forcing himself to stop pacing, he still couldn't seem to sit down, self consciously rubbing the spinarette on one wrist while he spoke. "At least you're safe." That seemed to mean a great, obvious deal to Peter; after losing so many people and constantly hearing about mutants being hurt, he was paranoid, to be nice about it. "There are worse places to adjust to, you have to admit."

"Of course," she said, watching him. "And I feel... well, I know I'm lucky, but I also feel really guilty. There are so many people out there who've lost everything, people who didn't do anything to deserve this. Humans, mutants... I'm glad to be back home, but I wish I could do more." Words failed her; she couldn't seem to explain just what she meant, what she'd gone through, what she wanted to do.

"I know that feeling," Peter admitted. "We're safe here, but we're kind of holed up. I'll never tell you not to help people, but just ... just don't go too far away next time, okay? You scare us when you do that." Scared him, too, but he was part of 'us'.

Kitty nodded, looking up and making eye contact. "I didn't mean to scare anyone. I just... I didn't want to put anyone else at risk, you know?" Magneto obviously had cyberpaths controlling all the technology - and all the information flow. Who knew who could be listening?

That seemed to sober Peter up a bit, and he pressed his lips together, nodding. "I know how that is, too." He had, after all, gone to painful lengths to keep other people safe. Peter could definitely respect that.

Leaning against one of the tables, Peter made a face, almost habitually rubbing his arm near his elbow. He wasn't in as much pain as usual, but it was still tender. "I'm just glad you're home," he admitted. "I'd rather keep friends closer than enemies right now, you know what I mean?" Especially when Peter wasn't totally sure who the enemy was.

"I missed everyone," Kitty replied simply. "I missed you," she added. Peter had been a close friend of hers for years, and there had been times when she'd been out on the road that she'd wished for his presence - whether it was a snarky quip about the idiocy of the FoH thugs or a city boy's inability to cope with traveling through mountains and forests, it would have been nice to have a friend along for the ride.

Watching Peter rub at his forearm, Kitty frowned a little. "Are you okay? It's not getting worse or anything, is it?" Growing a new bone had to hurt, but if it was hurting more... that surely didn't mean anything good.

Kitty was a fellow nerd, someone who could appreciate it when he started talking about fusion and the different isotopes of iron instead of looking at him like he had two heads. Not that isotopes were really the most important things in life, but it was nice to have a friend who wasn't going nutty or ten years older than he was, one who spoke his language. ...Even if that whole 'get flowers for MJ to apologize for smacking her' plan hadn't worked so well. He could let that one go.

"It's actually getting better. I think." Peter grimaced. "My arms are still sore. It's strange. I don't know what Hank's going to tell me, but I have an idea. It's not a very nice idea, but..." He shook his head.

"Although," Peter had to admit, "it does feel kind of cool, when you get past the weird part." From a scientific point of view, of course.
