Who: George Weasley and Pansy Parkinson
Where: Diagon Alley
When: Monday, June 8, 1988
Status/Rating: In progress, currently PG

George Weasley hated being away from his twin. Sure, Bill was in the hospital sitting with Fred (the last day, the oldest Weasley had insisted, that he could do it before the moon), but it didn't help George's state of mind. He wanted to be with his twin, keeping watch over him.

That was the main reason why it had only taken two visits to Muggle apartments before he found one that suited their needs. With that finished, he headed into the Leaky to catch up on news before heading to the shop. They needed to reopen that, he knew it wasn't an option to keep it closed. They needed the money for more than just selfish purposes.

Opening the door, he made his way to the bar and waved at Tom. "A newspaper, if you have one?" he asked, smiling as one dropped in front of him.

Pansy had exhausted quite a few leads already in her search for employment. Most places wanted experience, and she had never worked a day in her life. Not that she wanted to work in Muggle London anyway, but her funds were rapidly dwindling, and she was too proud to ask Draco or one of her other friends for assistance.

Sighing, she looked up as someone walked up to the bae near where she was. It was one of those blasted Weasleys, and the last thing she needed was for him to find out exactly why she was looking in the classified section of the paper.

George glanced over the front page, not really paying attention to what the headlines were. He'd fully read the paper when he was back in the hospital. Right now, it was to be polite since he had asked for the paper.

It took him a moment, but George did eventually notice the girl next to him. It took him an even longer moment to realize that she was (or used to be) a Slytherin and the actual name escaped him. He knew her as "Parking Sons", a name he wasn't too proud of calling someone now.

Instead, he just looked over, giving her a smile before going back to whatever section he had open.

Pansy saw the smile, but said nothing, giving a small nod in response. It took a minute, but she recognised him as one of those twins, though she had no clue which one.

Taking a quill from Tom, she began to scribble furiously, circling different jobs that looked like they were tolerable. She didn't even notice that she had bumped Weasley's arm several times with her own in the process.

After the fourth time the girl knocked his arm, George turned and leaned a bit over his part of the counter. Normally he didn't mind when this happened, but normally the only person bumping him was Fred.

"Excuse me, but if that a bad way of trying to get my attention?" he asked, forcing his happy-go-lucky look on his face.

Rolling her eyes because the Weasley broke her concentration, she looked over at him.

"I was not trying to get your attention, and I apologise if you feel that I was doing so," she stated in a voice that was clearly unapologetic. She tried desperately to conceal the page she was looking at and prayed that he didn't peek at it.

"Brushing against me every two seconds isn't trying to get my attention?" George let out a small laugh. "That's a new one. haven't heard that before!"

Feeling nice, George held out his hand, giving her a genuine smile now. "Name's George. And you are?"

Oh, no. Now he was being nice to her! She wanted to just get up and walk away, but Tom was right there, and well...she didn't have a choice, did she?

She returned the smile as best she could, not feeling very cordial, but putting on her best face. "Pansy," she said simply, taking his hand briefly. She really hoped no one saw her doing this...

"Like the flower? Or that git Malfoy." George hesitated, then shook his head. "No, wait. Sorry about that. Slip of the tongue since I haven't been around people much since... well, for a month now."

George went back to his newspaper for a moment before looking back to Pansy. "I think I remember you. From Hogwarts?"

"Like the flower," she said, rolling her eyes at the comment about Draco. But at least George had the good sense to apologise.

She nodded at the mention of Hogwarts. "Yes, I believe your brother Ron and I were in the same year?" She always thought Ron was a bit thick, but kept that to herself.

Looking at the paper, she folded it quickly, and the words 'Employment-Help Wanted' were clearly visible. Her eyes widened, and she flipped the page over as fast as she could.

"Two years below me, then." George nodded to himself. "That isn't too bad."

The motion of the paper caught George's attention. Even though he didn't want to pry, he couldn't help but notice what it was for. "Hold on," he murmured, reaching over to the paper. "What's this?"

Pansy nodded in acknowledgement of George's statement. She couldn't understand why a Weasley was being so nice to her, and why she hadn't told him off yet.

When he reached for the paper, however, she froze. "It is nothing," she told him, fumbling a bit. Why was she losing her composure so easily? It must have been the stress of the past month. There was no other reason, right?

"No, really." George leaned over a bit further, pulling the paper out toward him. When he saw what it was, however, he slowly pushed it back to her. He hadn't meant to pry that much.

"Rough times?" he asked, smoothing out his own paper. "Sorry..."

Pansy was mortified when George looked at what she was reading. Under normal circumstances, she would have told him to mind his own damn business, but she was, well...too shocked.

"If you must know, the Ministry has seen fit to seize my family's assets," she informed him in a clipped voice, the volume low enough for only him to hear. Now, why did she tell him that? She just wanted to beat her head against the bar.

George felt guilty that he hadn't thought of that. The ministry was still chaotic and a lot of people -most of them Slytherins- probably had their own assets seized.

"Have you had any luck yet?" George tried to keep the conversation calm, but he wasn't sure how well it was going.

He was just being so nice to her, and her old friens hadn't been in contact with her since Vince's funeral, so she was completely caught off guard by all of this. She wanted to glare at him and tell him 'does it look like I have?' But instead, she found herself shaking her head sadly.

"Muggle London does not appear to be in need of anyone with my qualifications," she answered. which, translated, meant that she'd never worked a day in her life.

"Haven't you tried the wizarding world?" George asked. "I'm sure someone will hire you. Somewhere." Possibly where the rest of the Slytherins were moving off to. Not that it was any of George's business. The shop needed some time to get cleaned up before he could reopen. He'd worry about his own people then.

"And risk anyone knowing what I am going through? I already have almost everyone avoiding me after what I did..." She stopped abruptly, turning her head away as her cheeks burned a deep crimson. How could she be so stupid as to say anything at all, never mind be caught off guard and allow a Weasley to see her blush? She just wanted to run away from there now, but she had an open tab, and didn't need Tom chasing after her.

George held up his hands in defense, trying not to point out to himself that she was blushing. He turned slightly in his seat, holding back a smile.

"Sorry, sorry. Don't really think I know what you're going through, then." Nervously, George rubbed his hand across his own paper. He wasn't sure why he was nervous; he and Parkinson never talked before now so it shouldn't matter.

Pansy knew that she really should be keeping her mouth shut, especially since she had no idea if he would take whatever information she gave him and tell the whole world about it. However, she was so flustered, and had been needing to just vent for a while now; and that got the best of her.

"You do not have the slightest idea of what I am going through. I cannot access my accounts at Gringotts, and the Ministry is about to seize my family's home. Tell me, where will that leave me? And do not suggest that I ask my friends to bail me out. That is simply not an option." Her tone was a lot less snippy than she thought it would be, but it also wasn't a 'woe is me' tone either. She was simply stating the truth, and now, all she wanted to do was hide behind the bar.

"You're right, I don't." George let out a sigh before folding up his paper. "I don't know where that leaves you. And I wasn't about to suggest your friends bailing you out." He hesitated before deciding that it really didn't matter what he said. "But if you've got a housing situation and a job situation, why don't you find somewhere you can live where you work."

"That is the problem. There is no place where I can do that," Pansy sighed as well, her voice sad. She placed her fingertips on her glass, delicately, gazing down at the butterbeer inside of it. "I am at a loss." She admonsihed herself once again for telling George any of this, what did he care about her and her situation?

"There is if you look hard enough," George told her. "I mean, hell, I might have use for someone like that. It's hard to find someone who'll take care of your shop and your house. But, you wouldn't want the job." George stood up, shrugging. "Suppose it's not your type."

Pansy arched an eyebrow at George, curious now. "Which job is this?" she asked him, her eyes asking him to sit back down and tell her. It was a long shot, but her funds were dwindling fast, and she wanted to know what exactly he was talking about.

"Nothing you can handle," George assured her. "Sitting behind a desk, selling jokes and other pranks. Honestly, can't expect a girl like you to know the first thing about what U-Know-Poo is."

Jokes and pranks? No, this wasn't Pansy's thing at all. But desperate times called for desperate measures...or so she believed. Besides, she was a Slytherin after all.

"Perhaps. But just maybe, there is a way for someone like me to find out? Though I do not know. Would someone like you be willing to do that?" it was a slight challenge, and there was a small voice in the back of her mind asking her just what the hell she was doing...but she wasn't going to back down now.

George couldn't help it, he started to laugh a little. Just the thought of a Slytherin working in the joke shop was amusing, let alone Pansy Parking Sons. He folded the newspaper under his arm.

"Listen, if you can handle it for a few days, then the job and the apartment is yours. I highly doubt you can do it, but Slytherins were always known for their unpredictability." George wasn't sure why he had just said that. Either way, he wasn't sure she'd take it.

Pansy stood up, her frame small and slight compared to his, as she gave him a challenging look. "What makes you think that I would be unable to handle this?" she asked, her eyebrow raised again. "If you are serious about this, then you have a deal, so long as I get a tour? That is only fair, right?"

"Course you get a tour. Nobody's going to be working in my shop who doesn't know where things go." George was honestly surprised that she was taking this, but did save him the trouble of looking for someone. For now. "Just don't go scaring off kids. Bad for business."

Kids? Well, Pansy knew she was compromising a lot right now, so that shouldn't surprise her. "All right," she said, her look pensive. "When will the tour be?"

"Tomorrow would be fine," Pansy agreed. Best to get this done with as soon as possible, especially since she would be able to move in that much faster as well. "I would assume I should meet you at your shop? I need to know what time though."

George was sure Bill could stay an extra day at the hospital, especially if it would only be for a few hours that it would take him to show Parkinson around. "Time? Well er... eleven sound good? Don't want to leave too early, especially since the shop isn't ready to be open just yet anyway."

"Eleven would be perfect," she stated. "I shall see you then, yes?"

She still had no idea why she was agreeing to this, other than desperation, and the fact that he was being kind to her. Pansy was not one to normally take charity, but it was definitely better than being homeless.

"Sure," George agreed. "Eleven it is, then." Now the only thing to do was to tell Fred who exactly he had hired. Not only to help in the shop, but also to live in their apartment. He wasn't looking forward to that.
