Draco Malfoy ([info]afm_draco) wrote in [info]aftermidnight,

Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Harry and Draco
What: A conversation that will probably settle things again or who knows what else
Where: The pitch at the Quidditch World Cup, just after Ireland's win
When: Monday Evening at the end of the Cup match
Status: Incomplete/Threaded.
Rating: Go with PG-13 for now.

Draco had sat alone in the stands with the ticket that Harry had given to him via owl. He was sort of surprised to have gotten it, but more then relieved to take the distraction that it offered. After all, he'd only just now found out that Astoria had been murdered in this most recent attack in France. While they hadn't ended their relationship on the best of terms, it still gave him quite the shock.

He didn't even mind when it was pouring rain and storming quite badly at the pitch. No drying charms were used to keep the storm at bay as Draco watched Harry perform his usual idiotic stunts to win the match. He was drenched from head to toe, but in that moment, Draco had never really felt that alive in a long while. As the game concluded, Draco watched as Ireland received the Cup--and as Harry was swamped by reporters. He chuckled lightly as Draco elegantly shoved his way forward through the crowd, closer and closer to where the team was located. Once, Draco would have found it annoying that Potter so easily got all this attention; now, however, Draco was more then relieved that it wasn't him in the limelight. Let Potter have the glory that he seemed to so desperately want, for all Draco cared.

As the reporters kept swamping the team, Draco just smirked as he stood off to the side, waiting for a moment when Harry would either spot him--or for a break in the crowd so that Draco could easily shove his way forward to stand at the former Gryffindor's side.

Harry got away from the crowd easier then he thought he would, slipping through and made his way back towards the locker rooms. There would be another wave of people soon enough and he wanted to get out of these soaking wet clothes and see to himself to make sure he was alright. He slicked his hair back as the rain beat down on him and took his glasses off, useless now that they were covered in water. No drying charm would be strong enough now unless he caught himself on fire. Which he had..and it didn't help.

Rubbing his shoulder with his free hand, he looked up, spotting Draco. He made sure no one else saw, before he nodded his head for the boy to follow him into the locker rooms. Shoving the door open, he peeked inside, making sure they were alone. And with the celebration going on outside, it seemed like they would be for a good long while.

Seeing the nod from Harry, Draco glided silently past the celebrating crowd of Irish fans and made his way calmly enough into the locker room. He glanced around briefly for a moment--halfway impressed--but Draco had seen plenty of Quidditch locker rooms in his past.

Once safely inside the room, Draco took in Harry's appearance and grinned a little, realizing his own wasn't much different than that--save for being struck by lightning. "Quite the heroic save there," drawled Draco lazily as he stared, his former sarcastic tone taking dominance over his, lately, casual tone. This wasn't done in jest or in anger, however. It was just a natural habit for Draco, and he was done trying to impress Potter and he was done trying to get the other's attention somehow.

"Exactly what I was going for," he said back pulling the sopping wet sweater and casted it aside. The place he'd been hit was swollen and bright purple, but Harry brushed it off. He was so used to being beaten on now it didn't even phase him. His mind was to busy with recent events and all he could think about was how Bill was handling things.

"I need to shower before we head out. I'm freezing," he said, grabbing a towel and his dry clothes. Ruffling through his bag, he found a pain potion and took that as well. "Won't be long," he said tiredly and made his way to the back of the locker room to the showers.

Fine, all right. Why did Potter call him into the locker room so soon, then, if he was just going to shower? Draco shrugged it off and took a seat on one of the benches nearby, hoping with all that he had that one of Potter's teammates didn't walk into to see a suspected Death Eater just lounging about in their locker room, never mind the fact that he wasn't part of their team. Or Hermione, for Merlin's sake. Draco ran one hand through his soaked hair, then smirked. If Potter was showering, then by all means, Draco would make himself presentable too. Casting a quick drying charm and a few grooming spells, the former blonde was looking in crisp condition--as if he hadn't just spent the last few hours standing and getting himself completely drenched in the stands.

His mind was elsewhere for the moment, however, as Harry showered. Astoria. He'd gotten his father's owl just before he'd left for the game. There was one tiny thing that had disturbed him about the whole affair, besides the use of Greengrass for Astoria's last name. It was the fact that the owl had come from the Minister. Which could only mean one thing. Lucius Malfoy was currently in charge of Britain, while Bellatrix was off...somewhere. He ran one hand through his dark hair worriedly, then drew the still-dry parchment out from his pocket once more and frowned at it. It distracted him enough that Draco didn't hear Potter showering, nor would he have heard the other getting out of the shower, either. Not only was Astoria gone, but Lucius was Minister for Magic for Britain at the moment.

He was living in hell, and it terrified Draco more then anything ever had in a good, long while.

Harry took a quick shower, which was better then nothing. He didn't want to be to long. Wrapping the towel around himself, he moved around to his locker, drying off, calling over to Draco.

"I saw the Prophet today. Why they stuck us all in black." He grabbed his pants and slipped them on, walking around to look for his shirt and socks. "I'm..I'm sorry about Astoria." Harry didn't know where the two of them stood anymore because he let other peoples love lives stay just that. Didn't pay much attention to it.

When Potter called out to him, Draco finally looked up from where he sat staring blankly at the owl he'd received from his father and finally registered Potter's comments. "I...it's all right. We've split, actually. We split a while back. Seems she believed their lies." Draco smiled weakly, then he shook his head. This was just too awkward for his liking. Talking about Astoria with Millicent might be one thing, but Potter? Draco didn't even know where to start. He'd realized when he heard of her death that he still loved her, at least some part of him did, yet he couldn't bring himself yet to feel the pain of losing her. It had been...well, almost months since they'd last seen each other or even spoken or written to each other. Far too long, in Draco's mind. "We just went our different ways," he finally whispered, then shook his head once more. "But that's not why I wanted this chat of ours, Harry." He frowned for a moment, then managed a small smile.

"I suppose I should forward my own congratulations personally on your engagement with Granger, actually. And for pissing off Weasley royally, I'm certain, but I know you're too good-hearted to enjoy that one. Although, you're doing a fine job of annoying the hell out of Millicent, from what I hear." He grinned wickedly, doing anything to take his mind off that damned owl still in his hands and the news about Astoria. Hopefully even Potter would see through that facade and realize he wasn't as cold-hearted as he came across some days.

"Draco if you called this just to tell me how happy you are Ron's pissed then we have nothing to talk about and I'm going back out to celebrate with my team." He was sure they were looking for him. He pulled his shirt on, wincing as the tight fabric constricted his shoulder a bit.

He sat down and grabbed his shoes, pulling them on. He had a hoodie in the locker and grabbed that along with his bag. He turned back to Draco waiting to see what he had to say for himself. He wasn't in much of a mood for a guessing game. Harry wanted to write to Bill or maybe even go and see him, but he was sure Ron and the others would rather not see him right now.

"If you think that little of me..." Draco started, then stopped suddenly, staring back at Potter coolly. He surveyed the other man for a good few seconds, and it was like one could see the wheels in his brain turning as he stood there. Millicent's words came rushing back, about how he always acted too arrogant for his own damn good, and how he'd demanded respect from people all the time. He gave a short, clipped laugh. "Sorry. I know you better then that," he remarked dully, then glanced out toward where he could still hear the screaming fans.

"That's not why I called this. Like I said, I've had some realizations hit me pretty hard lately...and I sound like an idiot right now, but hell. If you rather I finish this here so you can go back to celebrating, I can, if you'd fancy it. I know I'm not your favorite person to spend time with." He hadn't said it for self pity. Draco just stated the fact, and let Harry take it as he wanted to.

Harry was getting a little tired of playing Draco's therapist. Like he had all the answers and to be honest, he didn't know how to answer his own sometimes. But he would give Draco a break, since it seemed like he was still rather hurt by the recent events even if he and Astoria were no longer going out.

"As happy as I am, there isn't much to celebrate tonight. Not with what happened. I'm sure you saw Fleur was killed as well. Been worrying about Bill Weasley for most of the afternoon. But whatever you want to do. I rather wish you would just get to the point though." Harry didn't like beating around bushes. Not so much anymore anyways.

With that news, Draco looked down briefly. "Aren't I an idiot," he muttered darkly, mostly to himself, but he couldn't be damned if Potter had heard. Of course Harry would be worried about the Weasleys and how they were handling this news. Fleur was sort of like...an adoptive sister-in-law, or whatever the hell she could be, to Harry. And Bill Weasley was like an older brother. And here Draco was taking up his time. "Sorry for wasting your time, then," he returned a bit defensively. "I would have liked...well, never mind that, now. I just reasoned out why I kept coming after you whenever I was in a spot and kept trying to get your attention for whatever damn reason. And I'm here to apologize for being a nuisance and imposing when I was clearly not welcomed, first off, and second off, to say thank you."

Draco looked upward at the other briefly, knowing Harry just wanted him to get on with it already. "You were the first one to show me that the world was different then what my father led me to believe, so I kept trying to get closer, trying to prove to myself that if you could prove him wrong about one thing, then you could very well do it about everything else. I didn't agree with him for so long, and I kept trying to find an excuse for why I could form my own beliefs. Pathetic, isn't it? And now here I am blurting this out to you just after your big win when you're worried sick about the Weasleys. Right idiot, I am." Draco ran one hand through his dark hair, tempted to just turn on his heel and stalk out of there with some sense of dignity still attached.

Harry sighed heavily and listened to Draco, shaking his head. "Yes, you've told me all this before. And I think you've apologized enough. I don't know what you want to tell me Draco and I don't think you know either."

Harry ruffled his own wet hair and dried his glasses off, putting them back on. "You're forgiven. If that helps. But I don't know what you want me to saw Draco. I suck at things like this." He started to pack his bag, throwing his wet uniform in the wash.

"I'm balls at this myself. Damn. I wish I could have dragged Millicent with me to do the talking," commented Draco lightly, his eyes following Harry's every move as a way to distract his mind from forming coherent thought. This whole thing was him being an idiot, Draco was starting to think. He forced his mind to go back to that conversation with Millicent, when everything had made sense. A few lines stood out, after all. Potter only keeping him around when Potter needed him to be there, or needed something from him. Potter ignoring him all other times. Draco turned a tense gaze toward Harry now.

"I'm..." Draco started bleakly, then shook his head again. "Damn it. This was really a hell of a lot simpler the first time round with Millicent. "Look. I'll just say it bluntly, because it seems that's the only way my brain can function right now. I'm sick and fucking tired of being toyed with, Harry. One minute we're talking, one we're back to hating each other, and then the rest of the time in between I don't know what the bloody hell we are. I'll admit that a lot of the times it's my damn fault, but not all of it. Logic is screaming at me to just get as far away from you as I can, because we've been nothing but means to an end to each other and I'm done playing that game. But I'm ignoring that logic, and I came here. I know you're not in the mood to celebrate, but hell...let me at least take you out for a round of drinks. You and the team, for all I give a damn. As a friend. Or hell, if you want to share your feelings, then let me listen. I don't give a damn. I'm just tired of being toyed with, and I want to figure this, whatever this is, out." Gray eyes surveyed Harry closely. It was on the tip of his tongue to give the ultimatum, either friend, or he was walking off, because Draco was damned tired of being fooled with and toyed like this. But it was highly possible that Potter wouldn't quite get what he was trying to get at again.

Harry watched Draco for a moment before he started laughing. "Merlin.." he said sitting down. "First of all, forgive me, but we're not the best of friends and I have terrible trust issues. And you fluctuacting between being on the side of good and the side of bad or however we want to break it up now..can you really blame me for now sharing many things with you? I'm sorry Draco, we're never going to be best friends. But we're getting along a hell of a lot better then we used to. I'm busy, I've offered you to come train with the DA, I don't know what more you want from me."

He got up again and shook his head. "Seriously, if I didn't know any better I would have thought you were a girlfriend crying about not getting enough attention. When are you going to chuck yourself out of the closet?" Its exactly what he sounded like and it made him chuckle some more.

A firm gaze landed on Harry's expression and Draco's fist clenched at his side. "Fuck you," he spat back defensively. "First Millicent, now you! Damn. Millicent even gloated the fact that she swore I fancied you. YOU. You're bloody engaged, for one thing, and for another, I don't even fancy blokes at all!" Draco remarked proudly, tilting his chin up quite arrogantly. "If I'm confused as hell right now, bloody forgive me, all right? Need I remind you that the last woman that I fell for and was engaged with has just died?" Well. Draco was dramatic. That fact wasn't changing any time soon.

"And I'm bloody well done fluctuating, or whatever the hell you're calling it. And I'm coming to train with your DA, regardless whether or not the rest of them want me there. I've been practicing those blasted spells of yours, and could probably out-hex half of the rest of them in that group by now!" Draco's gaze softened a little bit at the sound of laughter, but he kept a firm resolve, staring coolly back at the other and stood there, wound up tight as a string as he prepared to defend himself, and his sexuality, even more.

"Yes..very masculine. Well I'm sorry I ruined your dreams by being straight and engaged. but honestly, Astoria was a bit of a prude and in the end, you would have been in an awful relationship. She was a bit controling no? Nice enough I guess, but relationship material..no." Not with a gay man, Harry thought, slinging his bag over his shoulder.

"Fine, train with us, but that doesn't mean I'll be answering every apology letter you send me. I told you I'm busy and I have a lot on my mind and I can't answer all of your sob notes. I get it. You're sorry. I understand. You want to help. Yes, your father is an asshole. Look, we agree on things. People suck, you're learning that." He clapped his hands. "But remember what I said about being true to yourself. Really thinking about it? You write to me all the time, I'm sure how disgusted with me you are is all you talk about to Millicent. So yeah, it would come off as a crush. You need some new topics. Time to move on, Draco. New chapter, clean slate. And don't give me shit about thinking to much because I don't think ANYONE over thinks things as badly as I do. You take a deep breath, suck it up and move on. If I've learned nothing else its that."

A fist clenched firmly at his side, and Draco looked like he was itching to lift his fist and strike Harry for insulting Astoria at the moment. He knew how that would look, however, and put a clamp on his hormones for the moment. "You shut up about Astoria," snapped Draco defensively once more. "You barely knew her, and now she's dead, and the bloody least you could do is respect that!" His voice shook at the end of that statement, but Draco pulled himself back together as quickly as he possibly could.

Time to move on. Some part of Draco's brain interpreted that statement as Harry's way of telling him that they weren't just going to be friends anymore, but rather just acquaintances, and brief ones at that. But he squashed that instantly, knowing it was foolish of him to be that ridiculously clingy. "And how many times do I have to tell you that I don't fancy blokes? Not even in the slightest bit!" He did manage a laugh then, and fixed a cool stare on the raven-haired boy before him. "I do come off sounding rather camp, don't I? All obsessed...bloody hell." Draco was chuckling a moment later, bordering on the edge of hysteria and just barely containing that laughter. "Do...do you think Bill would...well, even want help from someone like me at a time like this? I could come round and clean up or something so he could spend time with those children of his, or...or hell, anything really." Draco trailed off awkwardly, attempting to bring their conversation round to a neutral topic.

"I'm sorry," Harry said, hands moving into his pockets. Best to keep opinions to ones self about Astoria. Noted.

He couldn't help but roll his eyes at the mention of helping Bill. "Don't. He has his family and they'll be all the help he needs. Best to just stay away from the Weasley family right now. Let them mourn. And besides, Ron doesn't trust you at all yet and he's learned how to punch."

Gray eyes shifted directly back to Harry when he heard the other's apology, and he managed a half-hearted, small smile. He nodded once in acceptance of it. "Probably right. Still. I was attempting to move onto a new subject. Guess it wasn't the wisest one," muttered Draco awkwardly, glancing over at Harry again. But at the mention that Ron didn't trust him yet, Draco gave Harry a skeptical glance, as if to say, Weasley would ever really trust me? He highly doubted it, but according to that statement, Harry seemed to think so.

"Er. I guess this would be the part where I step aside and let you go off with your team or...well, take care of other things, I guess," Draco finished lamely, looking across at the former Gryffindor. "Somehow, Harry, no matter what I set out to do here, I wind up doing just the opposite. And next time I come across sounding so damn...well, camp, feel free to punch me until I've got some common sense knocked into my head."

"Yeah, I guess so. Celebrate or something.." Harry sighed and pulled his bag onto his shoulder more. "More like go congrat everyone again and then head home. To much work to do and I'm not in a very excited mood. I know I should be but, I don't have a lot to be happy for lately."

He took a step around Draco and stopped. "Next time you want to talk to me about something, then you better be ready to just come out and say it then. So you stop doing the oppisite. And..you may not fancy guys. But it would have never worked between us Draco. You're just not my type." Harry pursed his lips together, shaking his head.

Draco wanted to give Harry a good solid lecture on the fact that he did, in fact, have many things to be happy for, but he just smiled lightly and let the other walk around him. When Harry actually said those next words, however, Draco stared at the other for a full second before the laughter finally came out.

"Bloody hell, Harry, how many times do I have to tell you? You're hardly my type. For starters, you're not blonde, and you're most certainly not female." Draco wrinkled his nose briefly. "I'll be sure to tell Hermione that she's quite safe from me taking you from her next time we're on speaking terms." He rolled his eyes. "Go on, Harry." Draco thought for a moment, then tugged out three very different vials from his jacket. "Pain potion, Calming Draught, and a Non-Addictive Dreamless Sleep that has no side effects really at all. I saw you take that potion earlier, Harry, and store-bought usually don't work as well as Severus' or mine." Draco wrinkled his nose briefly. "Figured those could be of some use." He held out his hand with the three vials, letting Harry take them if he wanted to before he let the other be on his way.
