A cover story was given to the Oceanic Six to protect the location of the island and the identity of the those still on it. All five (excluding Aaron's) versions of the story state that eight people survived the crash, and six survived to be rescued. One thing the media never knew was that these six people - Hurley, Jack, Kate, Sayid, Sun, and Aaron - were not the only ones who managed to escape the island. Some found another means of getting away, one that included avoiding any and all media attention.

April 2008, nearly four years since the rescue, the once famous and widely talked about Oceanic Six are now considered “old news” by the media. They’re able to lead normal lives now - or at least they should be able to. Something has gone terribly wrong. The six, plus the others who managed escape, have been plagued by horrors stemming from their ‘new’ lives. Alcohol addiction, incarceration, committed to an insane asylum; these are only three of the things that have made the survivors’ lives horrible.

They thought the media had forgotten about them. They thought the months they spent on the island had been left behind. They thought they were free.

But the island never forgets. And now, it seems it may be playing for keeps. Now it wants them back.

Supposedly acting on Jacob’s orders, Benjamin Linus sent out messages to each and every person who managed to leave the island. In these messages, the man put his impeccable skills of persuasion to use in order to convince these people to return to where it all began. They were instructed to present themselves at a port on Bowen Island (in Canada) on April 9, 2008, where they would then board a freighter that would deliver them back to the island. In addition to being emphatically told that no one else should know where they were headed, the passengers were advised to only bring the bare essentials.

If they refused to come, Ben would threaten the lives of that person’s loved ones until they agreed. If they gave anyone information about where they were going, the person they told would be killed. Charles Widmore may be a worthy adversary in his quest to find the island. But Benjamin Linus is ruthless when it comes to protecting the island’s secrets.

Of course, not everyone will heed Mr. Linus’ warnings. Some of these messages will be dismissed as a sick joke, others may happen to fall into the wrong hands, and still others may find themselves in the hands of those whom have never even heard of this mysterious island. Jacob has his reasons.
