The fox walked upon the snowdrift. Her sharp nose was ever in motion as she breathed in the scent of smoke and cold and human and ever so faintly a hint of mouse. That last caught her attention and led her off the snowdrift into the tangle of winter-sleeping bushes beneath the wide, dark windows of the house. Silently she stalked her prey along the whisker-fine line of rodent tracks. Triumph surged within her as carefully timed leap ended with her forepaws landing on either side of a fat mouse as her jaws snapped down upon what would have been a fine fox meal if her teeth had not passed harmlessly through the rodent. But the mouse's high pitched scream and desperate rush to safety pleased the huli jing none the less.
The fox demon took one more pass around the house leaving no trace of her passage on the new snow with her insubstantial footfalls before she walked through the door and into the warmth of her den. The humans who lived within might object to her calling it hers but it did not change the truth of the matter. This was her place just as the little witch was her human - hers to watch over and hers to protect. The only being she suffered to share that privilege was the wizard even now holding her little witch in his arms.
She leaped lightly up onto the bed in the inner sanctum and carefully looked over her witch and her witch's mate. All seemed well with her humans so she curled up at the foot of the bed. Her three tails neatly wrapped around her as she settled in to sleep.
Cho stirred briefly in her sleep when the amulet around her neck warmed gently with the return of the wandering portion of its prisoner. Sighing softly, she curled more tightly into Cormac as her hand came up to drape over her nose in an unconscious mimicry of a fox's tail.
